counties are getting ready for winter weather. >> frank: how what had been a suspicious death investigation is now a murder case. now from western north carolina's news leader, this is news 13 at 11:00. >> frank: there is threatening weather on the way. snow and ice expected overnight with some hazardous conditions come morning. there are quite a few school closings to report for tomorrow already. no classes in macon, madison, mcdowell, mitchell, yancey, graham, avery and brooke counties. no school in cherokee county schools district one. we have the list at the bottom of the screen and also wlos.com. news 13's justin hinton is standing by live. but first, we go to meteorologist karen wynne. this could be very tricky travel, karen.

we are looking at a mix of snow and ice. and it doesn't take much to make very dangerous conditions. warning in effect for our northern mountains and northern foothills until midnight tomorrow. accumulating snow, also some accumulating ice making for dangerous travel. not recommended. purple area is winter weather advisory. lighter snow and ice but enough to make travel hazardous at times. if you do have to be out on the roads, travel with care. as we head south in to the upstate, a freezing rain advisory until tomorrow evening as well. right now on our radar we see light snow flurries. we're kind of in a lull before the action. it moves in to tennessee over

a number of mountain school districts are already taking heed and cancelling schools tomorrow morning. the roads are still very dry. treated earlier. so crews are working on some of the smaller roads. we did see quite a b b of blowing snow. that came through with gusty wind. calm before the storm. getting back to the schools. i did reach out to the superintendent for madison county schools. he says tomorrow will be the tenth missed school day because of winter weather. he says though in some years there have been up to 18. it's really been this back to back snow system for those students to go to school. but he says that he'll have to get with the school board to figure out how they're going to make those days up. reporting live in madison county, justin hinton, news 13. >> frank: fire crews battle an early morning blaze in asheville.

after midnight at a business on haywood road. crews were able to contain the flames to just two rooms. no one was inside at the time and the cause of that fire was still under investigation. flames tear through almost 200 years of history in boone county, kentucky. the store survived flooding, landslides, even the great depression. this weekend it was destroyed by fire. it was on the national register of historic places. a landmark in northern kentucky culture. a man in oregon is lucky to be alive after being pulled in to a wood chipper. officials say he's an arborist whose harness got stuck. his leg tripped the safety bar at the last moment and shut that chipper off. the blades were just inches away from his head when the machine stopped.

expected to survive. new details in the suspicious death case that is now a murder investigation. 29-year-old james norton is charged with first degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. the body of 62-year-old christina kesinger was found friday afternoon along central avenue. then yesterday morning, madison county sheriff's deputies located her vehicle and took norton in to custody. norton is being held in the bond. new information in a story we've been following out of oconnee county. the coroner there ruled jeffrey canton was a suicide. search teams had been looking for him since he was reported missing on tuesday morning. also in oconnee county, a man's arrested after a standoff

over i now your news 13 skywatch weather. >> karen: as we time out the next winter storm, we are looking at snow showers to move in overnight. accumulating snow in parts of our northern mountains. monday morning it starts off as snow and then we warm up a bit. it should turn to a mix of sleet and rain. a wintery mix then eventually turning back over to rain. but not before a very slippery

right now in asheville, 22 degrees. we are cloudy and windy. 10 is what we feel like outside right now with the wind chill factor. also quite cold and cloudy in greenville at 27 degrees with a wind chill of 19. right now we're kind of in a lull waiting for that snow to begin. very cold conditions from this high area of pressure off from the northeast continuing to move that very chilly air in here. of course we have that next storm system which is on the move. as we time out the future cast as we go in to the early morning hours, we'll see those snow showers, then the mix. eventually the rain moving in. by 6 o'clock tomorrow evening, pretty much all rain with temperatures above freezing. tomorrow night, tuesday morning. that tuesday morning commute is also going to be messy. then we get a break tuesday afternoon. a clipper system moves in late tuesday in to wednesday.

very light snow in higher elevations wednesday. as we take a closer look and time it out hour by hour, midnight not a whole lot going on. but as we head closer to day break, we are going to see snow showers develop. by 7 o'clock, i think this is a little bit underdone. but you get the idea. some of the heaviest snow is going to be in the foothills and the mountains. moisture moves in to colder air. we go through the morning and around 10:30 in the morning it looks like we are going to be warm enough to see some of this change over to that mix of freezing rain. slick conditions are going to continue on in to the afternoon before it turns back over to all rain. you add the winds in there. we could see some power outages with this in addition to the slick road conditions. there's that second round of snow in the higher elevations on wednesday morning. snow fall totals, heaviest in northern mountains, three to five.

area. lower totals as we head down south. snow, gusty wind and ice, yes, we could get in accumulating ice. this is not picking up on the ice accumulations much. but you get the idea. old fort down to tryon. it could be quite slick going for you. lows tonight are not going to cool too much more. 21 in asheville. 29 in clemson. bryson city, 27. tomorrow, highs go above freezing. cooler in eastern part of our region in the west where we should make it in to the 40s in places like franklin. here's a quick look at the next seven days. be careful tomorrow.
