the most snow fall and when it will wrap up. >> reporter: senator ted cruz and some underdog candidates making the final push. we're live tonight in anderson. >> frank: it's decision day for a popular haywood county school. i'm news 13's frank kracher. awaiting the fate of central elementary. that's coming up in a live report. now from western north carolina's news leader, this is news 13 at 5:30. >> tammy: a brief warm-up today helped to melt some of that ice on the roads. >> frank: chief meteorologist jason boyer starts us off tonight. temperatures dropping again tonight. >> jason: yeah, they're dropping pretty quickly. graham county, swain county,

that, mitchell, yancey, avery county you're all under winter advisories. a lot of the snow is going to wrap up early tonight. but the impacts with the black ice, blowing snow will continue. over in tennessee, we have winter storm warnings until 10 o'clock in the morning. graham county getting some of that snow fall. it's really about 3500 feet where some of this is really accumulating now. in the black mountains we have snow. little creek in the northeast corner of madison. in the next hour you can see some of this snow is going to turn to rain briefly and back to snow. 32 degrees on our leicester carpet sales news13 sky cam network. haywood county 55. right at freezing. accumulating. coal springs ranch dropping and thus the snow is accumulating.

that are coming and when asheville might get some snow. stick around. >> tammy: ems workers say 17 people had to be taken to the hospital. ten of those injuries were from car accidents. 7 were from slips and falls. >> had a lot of slips and falls. people coming out of their house. again, seeing it wet and rainy and not realizing the temperature and whatever, that it was freezing as soon as it hit the ground. >> frank: none of those injuries were serious. but slipping on the ice can be. he showed us a pair of slip-on cleats that he and other ems workers use when they have to navigate the ice. an update now on work to fix a broken water main in asheville. the water department estimates it will be 9 o'clock tonight before the repairs are done and the water is back on. the break happened around 4:15 this morning along mcdowell county.

have been dealing with no water or low pressure. the exact cause of the break is unknown. crews say the recent change in temperatures could have played a role. >> tammy: the family of a cashiers man is killed in home. investigators are confident they'll make an arrest. jackson county sheriff's office is tracking down all leads. norris' family members say he was a wonderful family man who loved the outdoors and was committed to his faith. they look to an arrest for the sake of closure. >> i just want to have justice be brought to our family and for kim. because that's what he deserves. >> he might have been my brother-in-law by marriage but to me he was my brother. >> tammy: the jackson county sheriff's office is handling this case as a homicide.

close central elementary in waynesville is coming tonight. >> frank: parents and students continue to fight to keep their school open. frank kracher joins us live in clyde. frank, folks are getting ready for one final rally. >> frank: they are. they're just beginning to gather now outside the education center. this is where the board meets. this was supposed to happen back in february 8th. winter weather postponed that. it is just raining right now so this meeting tonight is on. now the board of education has already approved a $2.4 million budget reduction for the next school year. things like declining enrollment. officials say closing central and consolidating it with other elementary schools could save half a million dollars. put parents say this school offers their children quality education that they deserve.

candidates are trying to reach some of the most conservative voters in the palmetto state. >> tammy: senator cruz is expected to speak tonight. darren, what time is he scheduled to address the crowd? >> darren: that's right, tammy. senator ted cruz is expected to get here around 7:30. right now they're doing a security sweep. as you can see behind there, there's a sheriff's deputy car right there behind the building. now according to the latest polls, senator ted cruz is trailing by double digits behind donald trump. and just a couple points ahead of senator marco rubio. he's trying to get his message out. ohio governor john kasich had a town hall in greenville this afternoon.

message that they wanted to get out there to viewers and voters here in the upstate. we spoke with a voter at his rally in greenville. she said the fact that he took the high road during the debate and made it second. dr. ben carson who is polling last among the candidates and entered of some the fall polls in a dead heat with trump is still making an effort to climb back. the order in the polls is still trump, cruz, rubio. a a ot of the voters said after all the fighting up on stage, now they're not completely sold on the top three. coming up on my40 at 6:30, we'll hear from some of the voters who came out to the ted cruz rally in anderson. >> tammy: other republican candidates are also campaigning in south carolina. frontrunner donald trump held a

it is a little bit of wind. 56 and dry in the upstate. greenville southwest wind at 10. no worries there in terms of winter weather. but you will get rain down here already starting to fall. it's all snow in the higher elevations. gotta be around 3400 feet to see accumulation. that's going to continue to drop down. we'll get some of that accumulation in the valleys. maybe down in franklin later this evening. you're really holding on to rain right now. nantahalas. stretching east ward in to macon and jackson county. some of the heaviest over western transylvania county, north of sapphire and west of pisgah. these are the black mountains. little creek, faust, northern and central yancey county, you're getting snow there, too. 19 e is going to be treacherous. heaviest snows north of i-40 and working down in to some of the

here's your future cast. there's midnight. snow still flying over the mountains north and northwest. some pockets of snow over on the balsams. temperatures. a lot of the moisture is going to be gone by then. very minimal accumulation in some of these valley locations. watch out because it will be icy on those roads farther west. back in to the 40s, though, in the afternoon tomorrow. upper 40s in some places south. mid 40s in asheville. at least that. here's the idea with our rpm model. an inch or two on the ground if not more. smokys, a couple of inches to four inches. this blue area is two to four inches. another two to four over yancey, mitchell, avery. madison county as well.

>> darcel: family members of a young man shot at deverview apartments say he's an erwin footba player. >> larry: it happened this afternoon and asheville police immediately swarmed the scene. >> darcel: john, the family is stunned by what happened. >> john: they sure are. the investigation continues as that young man fights for his life. we have a picture of him. his name is kyrie logan. he's a football player just three days shy of his 18th birthday. he's in critical but stable condition at the hospital. police say there's no imminent danger here as the investigation continues. >> that's a good kid. and it not only involves him, that involves anybody. you shouldn't be out here shooting each other and killing each other. that's crazy. that's just crazy.
