richard shields is charged with murdering 27-year-old toby mathis at a dollar general store. in opening statements prosecutors laid out a case accusing shields of executing and planning the shooting of mathis because he was not satisfied with the charge of involuntary manslaughter against mathis for the death of his son. they say shields was drunk, emotionally impaired and his judgment was unsound due to a stroke when mathis was shot. you'll have more details on today's testimony tonight at 5:00. >> we have an update, the investigation into the death of a teenager continues for the third day. asheville police are contacting witnesses and collecting evidence. no arrests have been made. in a statement police said the safety and security of neighbors, friends and family of the victim are of the utmost importance. the 17-year-old died yesterday after being shot in the head.

in the north and northeast. in forest city, 5. not much of a windchill but slight. look at the temperatures across the nation, you can see the jet stream. a nose dive and up towards minneapolis, back down through cincinnati and washington, 37, further south of that, 60's in dallas, 70's down into texas and orlando and pretty much in the middle in asheville in the 40's. back here in the big picture in the southeast, satellite and radar showing clear conditions as high pressure is the dominant feature the next couple of days into the weekend too. good timing here, future cast model, this does a couple of things, it shows the lack of cloud cover and shows us temperatures. this is the clouds moving through at 6:00 p.m. notice no rain a a actually very little cloud cover until we hit saturday, an increase in the clouds.

and also let you know when the rain will return to the forecast. lauren brigman joins us live near the side of the crash. what have you learned about the driver involved. glen remains in the hospital. this crash happened in the intersection of hendersonville road just before 10:30 last night. he was traveling south when he hit the raised median. police say the 56-year-old lost control and he was thrown from it. bill parker was wearing a helmet, it was not fastened properly and it came off. they want everyone to double check their helmets before taking off.
