our 7-day forecast for both the mountains and upstate. 3 3 3 3 3 today... the murder trial of a transylvania county man moves forward in court... with the defense set to begin presenting its case. news 13's lauren brigman is live from the county courthouse, in brevard. lauren, witnesses are expected to be called to the stand today? witnesses that will speak to what they say are issues richard o'shields battled... including a stroke, p-t-s-d and alcohol. o'shields is charged with gunning down toby mathis in 20-11. 3 prosecutors say o'shields killed mathis to avenge his son's death. on friday, the jury heard from a few

including the county's medical examiner at the time of the killing. and a detective with the transylvania county sheriff's department who testified that lead fragments were found at the scene. last week, surveillance video of the shooting was also presented during trial. authorities say o'shields shot mathis five times at the rosman dollar general store. mathis was charged with involuntary manslaughter for the death of o'shields' son just months prior. the trial is now in it's third day. live in brevard, lauren brigman news 13 3 3 3 happening today... a major economic development announcement in henderson county. governor pat mccrory will be on hand for the announcement at 4:30 this afternoon at the historic henderson county courthouse. last month, county commissioners approved a nearly 7 million dollar incentives package to bring in "g-f linamar", a car parts plant, to mills river. the company would invest 217 million dollars and create 350 nenejobs. 3 also today, we could learn more about duke energy's plans

plant to natural gas. staff with the state utilities commission will present their findings of duke's application to utility commissioners in raleigh. duke's application requested to build a third back up unit, along with two natural gas units. as we reported last week, the utilities commission staff recommended rejecting the third unit. the utilities commission is expected to make a decision by march first. 3 3 the u-s supreme court is back in session today, for the first time since the sudden death of justice antonin scalia. oral arguments get underway around 10 this morning. chief justice john roberts is expected to mention scalia's passing from the bench. scalia died last week while visiting a remote ranch in texas. he was 79 years old. president obama has vowed to pick a supreme court nominee to fill the vacancy. republicans argue naming a successor should be a job for the next president. 3 3 we're just one day away from another battle in the race for the white house. tomorrow, the republicans will caucus in nevada. now the democrats are in south carolina courting

never doubted each other" it was also another big rally for bernie sanders in greenville, south carolina. he got some celebrity help from actor danny glover. sanders working to court the black vote...which lead d an awkward, luke warm reception at this predominantly african american church.(kenneth standup close) tomorrow night, sanders and clinton will hit the stage for a democratic town hall at the university of south carolina. the republicans are spending today rallying in nevada where the latest poll has trump leading by 26 points. kenneth moton, 3 3 3 the u-s coast guard rescues three people from rough waters in washington state over the weekend. and it is all caught on camera. you can see the coast guard air crew lifting two women and one man to safety. stations in washington report the two women were surfing, when the rough waters took them away. the man jumped in to help them, but was also swept away. officals say conditions were

morning... on a siberian husky that needed emergency surgery in asheville. the asheville humane society posted on facebook that "claire" pulled through the surgery on her lung... and that she is breathing well on her own. her now week old puppies are in foster care. an online fundraiser has raised nearly 3- thousand dollars to help cover the cost of claire's surgery. 3 3 3 3 3 here is a look at what you can expect for the next three days. 3 3 3 the "great american race" comes down to a close finish. luke tells us who made a huge move on the final lap, to claim the checkered flag at

3 the daytona 500 is one of those events that can change a nascar driver's life forever. if you can win the great american race, you put your name along side some of the all-time great drivers in history. sunday provided that opportunity for the best racers in nascar. 20 year-old chase elliott, the youngest driver to ever start the daytona 500 from the pole position, did not have his best day on the track. on lap 19, elliott gets loose coming out of turn four, and slides across the pavement. his car digs into the grass and bangs up the front end of his car. fast forward to 31 laps to go, dale earnhardt jr, loses controle coming out of turn four, and slams his car into the inside wall of the track. he was okay, but his day was over, and the dale jr fans can't believe it! so we come down to the final lap of the race. matt kenseth in the lead, but denny hamlin makes

inside, and jumps out into the lead with martin truex jr. we come to the finish line, and it's the closes finish in the history of the daytona 500. denny hamlin beats out martin truex jr by a couple of inches to win the great american race. it's the first daytona 500 victory for denny hamlin, and joe gibbs racing. here's the top seven drivers, and the points each driver earned for their finish today. for denny hamlin, winning the daytona 500 is a milestone in his career. it's such a huge team victory. joe gibbs racing. he sat over here a 3 week ago, and told me all these sidebar races are getting old. let's go win the real one. so, to win it for the boss after 23 years, it's just, there is no better feeling than what i have right now. this is the tenth time

3 the democratic candidates are starting to make their way to south carolina ahead of saturday's primary. thousands of people packed in the bon secours wellness arena in greenville to see bernie sanders on sunday. he spent an hour talking about everything from equal pay and the criminal justice system... to campaign finance reform and student debt. his main message was that every day people will benefit from a sanders presidency. 3 24:43-53to paraphrase abraham lincoln, this is a campaign of the people, by the people and for the people the presidential hopeful also brought along special guest danny glover who introduced him. 3 3 hillary clinton is already looking ahead after her win in the democratic primary in nevada on saturday. she flew to houston after the victory and held a rally at texas southern university. clinton told thousands of supporters it was a great night for her presidential campaign. but she
