you wanted to kill) i didn't intend to kill him, i only remember seeing his face." while it is possible that he did what the state has said, it is sort of unusual that someone with his psychiatric structure he would do that. in an exchange with the prosecutor, doctor corbin acknowledged that neither a stroke nor heart problems makes a person want to kill someone. 3 3 3 we are learning new details about the f-b-i's investigation into a possible hate crime at brevard high school. in november, a 20-year-old and two minors were charged with crimes related to ethnic intimidation. the alleged victim was black, and the suspects are white. over the last two weeks, f-b-i agents have been interviewing those involved with the situation, and are considering more charges. the transylvania county n-double-a-c-p president says agents told him the investigation began after an anonymous tip. 3 we feel that it should have been classified as a hate

>> holly: today, we are discussing the zika virus. >> jay: we have dr. jennifer
5:52 am
for health and human services. let's talk about zika. what is it? >> it's a virus transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. it's very important for people to know we don't have the seeca in north carolina and in the united states. there is an outbreak in the caribbean and south and central america. >> holly: we know there was a concern for pregnant women. talk to us about the concern and what is the threat? >> so, there have been a lot of reports, mainly coming out of brazil, that have seen that babies born who were infected with the zika virus have a serious birth defect called microcephaly, where the head does not grow as large as would be expected for a baby. that can lead to problems with, you know, mental development, long-term health consequences. and so, there has been a concern, but i have to say, there is no proof yet that the virus is the cause of this. they are actually just started studies to look for this.
5:53 am
concern that this virus, as you said, transmitted by the mosquito, could be passed from person-to-person in certain circumstances, right? >> right. there have been some reports and one in the united states of sexual transmission of the virus from a man who was infected and then passed it on through sex to his partner. there have also been reports of blood transfusion, but we are still looking for the evidence to support that. >> holly: what are the symptoms? what do we need to watch out for? it could potentially get here. people are concerned. we need to be aware. >> right. so, most people actually don't have symptoms. only one out of five people who are infected two-page symptoms. the symptoms are usually mild. and they are fever, rash, red eyes, and joint pain. typically, they just last for a few days to a week. >> jay: so it corrects itself? >> yes. >> jay: a ma lair yeah--type thing ( ). >> there's no care for zika, there is for ma lair yeah. >> holly: that's the concern,

her coming up. >> jay: welcome back, 5:57. a strong storm in new orleans creates an unusual site in weather phenomenon. >> holly: a local weather station caught three sprouts next to each other as storms passed through the area. >> ingrid: residents reported
5:57 am
they saw debris flying through the air. >> jay: the weather service says thousands of people are in the path. >> ingrid: that's neat to see a tornado with a water base. we have a chance for severe weather today. right now we are seeing light rainfall, winds at 10 miles per hour and 48 degrees. a flooding threat, a high wind threat, and then snow, yeah, more snow this week. i will talk about the totals coming up in the next half hour. >> >> lauren: as the wind is picking up we are beginning to get reports of weather-related issues across our area.
5:58 am
5:59 am
coming up in minutes. >> holly: the rain during the last 24 hours left neighborhoods in charlotte soak and even caused a tree to fall on the house. >> jay: this huge tree slammed onto the roof while a family with three children was inside. i went through the attic. thankfully, no one was hurt. >> >> holly: the same storm system brought tornadoes to parts of the south and is causing our rain here. right now we are under a flash flood watch until 6:00 tonight. >> jay: we have live team coverage to make sure you know what's happening before you head out the door. let's talk to ingrid allstaedt who is tracking the storm. ingrid? >> ingrid: we have satellite radar, we have seen constant rain across many portions of the region. already seeing more than three
6:00 am
and the rain continues to fall. flash flood watch until 6:00 today for the entire viewing area including in asheville, all the way down to greenwood in the upstate. but, coming up in my full forecast, we will talk about not only how much more rain will fall, but how much snow will fall and the coming days. back over to you. >> holly: we continue our live team coverage of the flooding concerns this morning with a look at the road conditions. >> jay: news 13's lauren brigman joins us live along sweeten creek road near biltmore village. lauren, drivers can expect to encounter water on the roadway there? >> lauren: definitely. we are seeing the rain continue here in asheville. take a look behind me, i will take a step out of the way. we have a car coming through. this is, to give you an idea of what you're going to encounter on the morning commute, you can see the standing water along the roadway there, but it's actually beginning to go across the road there. so, hydroplaning, of course, is a big concern when we have the rain continuing to fall, flash flooding events possible, of course.
