that comes overnight and through tomorrow. winds blowing in asheville. winds have been gusting over 35 much of the day. they will begin to relax only a little bit. winter weather advisories from 7 o'clock this evening to 7:00 a.m. friday. you can see the snows expanding on the future cast. i'll tell you who is going to get most of it and how much will fall in your neighborhood. stick around. >> darcel: our team coverage continues now in maggie valley. >> larry: rex hodge joins us. what happened out there, rex? >> rex: i'm here at riverside village in maggie valley. strong wind knocked down one of these pine trees and fell in to the roof. the heavy tree cut right through the roof and damaged her car. she says the storm raced through maggie valley about 7 this morning with a sound she compares to a train.

that. i've never been through a tornado. but the way people describe it, the whole building shook. it was different. >> rex: belick lives here with her daughter. she says none of the other residents here were injured. and that's also the case in cherokee, where trees fell on mobile homes and in one case, four trees fell on to a house knocking out power there. back here in maggie valley, jane belick says she does have some insurance. assessors were here today filling out reports. as soon as the weather clears, some clean up here will begin. rex hodge, news 13. >> larry: there's more storm damage in other parts of the mountains. at one point nearly 12,000 people were without power. >> darcel: in haywood county, mike smathers saw a tree fall right in front of his house in canton, taking down a power line

>> i saw the tree go over on the line and it started to ark and a lot of flames were coming up. it looked like it was going to go to the neighbor's house. it was a tremendous ball of fire. >> larry: mike says it's fortunate no one was driving in the area when that tree fell. >> darcel: stay on top of all the weather changes by checking our interactive radar online. find it on wlos.com. >> larry: closing arguments will begin tomorrow in an emotional charged murder trial in transylvania county. richard o'shields faces 20 to life. prosecutors say he shot the victim five times to avenge his son joey's death. he doesn't think o'shields was capable of planning the murder.

impaired by his ptsd and by his depression, he would not be able to think of alternatives. he was having trouble thinking of the consequences. >> larry: o'shields' brothers also testified telling jurors that richard o'shields withdrew from his family and began drinking heavily after his son's death. >> darcel: deputies say they found two pieces of metal in kevin dalton's cell. they say he had been chipping away at the wall and there was damage to the window. he's in jail on an almost $4 million bond for being a habitual felon. deputies say dalton kept violating his mother's protective orders and committing crimes at his parents' house. new tonight, a 911 transcript should provide more details about the argument that

today a judge ruled to release the call made by robin richardson, the december night she's accused of shooting tim fry. richardson is charged with first degree murder. warrants state richardson shot him because she claims he assaulted her. it may be next week before the transcript is released. >> larry: we have an update on a story we brought you monday. a judge has increased the bond for david penly who is charged with animal cruelty. penly was arrested monday for allegedly attacking a woman and her pet chickens. buncombe county prosecutors pushed for an increase bond today. penly stabbed a man back in 2010. gun advocates say asheville

news 13's frank fraboni investigates. frank, have they been complying with the state law? >> frank: they have not. and both the county and the city admit to dropping the ball. grassroots north carolina says signs like these prohibiting the possession of weapons in city and county parks are a violation of north carolina law. >> what we're asking asheville and other cities to do is exactly the same thing they're asking citizens, obey the law. >> frank: these photos taken in september and our own taken this month, prove local officials have been ignoring state law since 2013. >> conceal carry is now legal in state parks. yet we continue to have cities which post against firearms, including lawful conceal carry through the entire park system.

allows concealed weapons in parks, with the exception of recreation facilities like pools, gymnasium and athletic fields where there are organized events. bike paths and greenways don't qualify as recreational facilities. >> some of our park signs have ordinances of 15 to 20 signs. we're working on getting those updated. >> frank: it was an oversight due to a change in staff. tape now covers the section of the signs that includes the unlawful ban. >> it was just an oversight. it was a mistake on our part. >> frank: some buncombe county parks were also in violation. they, too, have now been covered up in tape. they're working to correct their own illegal ordinance. >> we're meeting with the sheriff, the police chief and our legal team to decide how to resolve this. we are going to be consistent with state law.

survivor advocates hope this will help. >> like the date of assault, time of assault. >> frank: blind reporting is not new. the ability to submit an account of a rape or sexual assault. the thing that is new now is the computer. >> it's a way of bringing what we have historically done for numerous years here in buncombe county. >> frank: angelica wynne says her group has a long standing relationship with asheville and buncombe county law enforcement. >> it's law enforcement's duty to go and investigate to see if there's enough evidence to collaborate what the survivor is saying. and not to build up a criminal case. >> frank: investigators say they see the immediasy. it sometimes leads to cracking

college is training workers for the 350 new jobs at the gf linamar plant. linamar executives were on the campus today meeting with school officials to set up the program. the plant will need skilled workers to build car parts. >> we're beginning discussions and we're going to flesh out a training and recruiting program with the company all through the months of april. and by march, we should have more details. >> larry: blue ridge community college already has a robust program that turns out skilled workers for machinery plants. governor mccrory announced the plant to be built. it will open at the end of next year. >> darcel: we're following the potential of severe weather. >> larry: after all that rain today, we're now looking at snow. >> jason: if you like manic weather, this is your day.

we've already seen rain for the most part. the big story here is the snow. southwest haywood county, northeast or southeast jackson county getting good snow. mostly rural locations. most of us aren't seeing flakes just yet. we are watching radar closely and we will continue to see more wide spread. we'll start to see the snow stick first of all in the high country. that's where we'll watch it closely over in the smokys as well. leicester carpet sales news13 sky cam network. blue skies. now we're starting to see the clouds lower. 43 down there. 47 at the airport in asheville. south-southwest wind at 18. here's the storm. it's going from the gulf coast all the way now in to the great

this is a potent one. and it's still packing a lot of energy. behind it, a lot of snow squalls happening in the great lakes. big time snows there. and the wind energy with this is just going to continue to come out of the northwest. snow fall right along the tennessee border. you'll get more sunshine initially in to the upstate tomorrow and foothills. here's the future cast. note showers over the balsams, over the smokys and black mountains this evening in to thursday morning. that wind will still be a major factor blowing the snow around, causing black ice concerns. and then we still see snow showers through tomorrow, friday. the wind will still be a factor, though, much of the day friday. it won't be as strong as it was today. but certainly more noticeable winds.

to four inches of snoo up in to the black mountains, maybe a couple of inches. burnsville, inch, inch and a half. marshall dusting to at least a tenth of an inch. freezing around day break in asheville. so what snow is flying will likely stick on the north side of the county. temperatures will only get in the 30s tomorrow for many mountain locations. low 50s in the upstate. tomorrow, saturday, 60s by sunday and monday. >> larry: those temperatures really aren't bad. >> jason: especially today. we could have done without the wind, obviously. but the temperature was 60, 64. >> larry: roy williams says he will not be retiring soon. the tar heels coach gives the reason he plans to stay on. next in sports. the biggest problem we're having at this time still is
