clear up just in time for new year's. we're hoping. meteorologist efren afante joins us with the details on that. but looking at the radar behind you, it does not t ok very clear right now. >> not at all. we have had brief pockets where we saw a little bit of sunshine early this morning. but as the radar shows, the rain has come to somewhat of a end. a lot of cloud coverage in place. temperatures are warming up quite a bit. lexington, 74. orangeburg, 77. here in columbia, sitting at 74 degrees. we will be getting to temperatures very likely breaking records. seventy-nine, for the high today. rain likely this afternoon and into the evening. a low of 65. other than fog tomorrow morning, a good chance of rain throughout the day tomorrow, with a high of 74 degrees. we will look at the seven-day forecast and the famously hot new year's eve forecast in a few minutes. mary. continuing coverage.

get to know each other. you don't have to leave your religion at the door to get to know someone from another religion. but you may be surprised to find out that these people that you assumed -- for example, -- might be connected with terrorism, are actually hard-working people, and neighbors of yours. so we wanted to make a statement today to try to discount the statements being made particularly by political candidates right now. it is unconstitutional to single out one religion in the united states. for bias or prejudice or discrimination. it is not right. and we do recognize that there is terrorism and violence here at we believe to fight that is not by discriminating against a religion but by learning to know each other. >> thank you so much. for a list of events, you can go

national headlines. ethan couch, known as the "affluenza" teenager, has been caught with his mother in mexico. authorities have been searching for him after he did not show up to a meeting with his probation officer. he was sentenced to 10 years on probation following a drunk driving crash that killed four people. investigators believe he fled with his mother after a video surfaced appearing to show ethan couch at a party that included alcohol. this is a look at the video. drinking would be considered a violation of his probation. his case made national headlines after his lawyers claimed that he suffered from "affluenza" -- because his wealthy parents shielded him from consequences of his actions. the same storm system that brought deadly tornadoes to the south and midwest is now dumping ice, snow and rain on much of the east. brian webb reports from goldens bridge, new york. >> reporter: we are on 95. >> a coating of slush covered the roadways near boston causing

further north, a mixture of ice coated the area. >> areas of the northeast have been experiencing unusually warm conditions. here at goldens bridge, new york, a thin layer of snow is on the ground. a slight rain is falling. >> i don't mind it. >> in some areas of the midwest, flooding is a problem. like this now impossible intersection in st. louis. this is the city's wettest year on record. last night, and st. clair county, illinois, it only took a small amount of flooding -- about 6 inches, to stall a tractor-trailer and a school bus with 14 students on board. >> it does not take much water to move a vehicle. >> everyone was safely rescued. dozens of homes have flooded in branson. and the mississippi river in missouri could request.

but efren afante right now, nasa is tracking several large asteroids that will pass very close by earth in the next few days. the first is about the size of a jumbo jet. it will pass within 1.2 million miles of earth today. the largest is the size of a football stadium that will fly by january 6. nasa says none of the asteroids

>> at least one mess up the weather. >> it is far enough away. >> the big one is the size of a football stadium. >> that could do damage if it hit us. >> it will pass us by. >> the telescopes should put that out. i don't know if they can get through all of the cloud coverage. it was cloudy all day today. for a lot of us, after midnight -- and before daybreak, we had a lot of rain come through. very heavy rainfall. but it started to trickle down toward the midlands. and we had anywhere from light to moderate showers. until about 6:00 or 7:00 in the morning. not just very light scattered precipitation. most of this is barely even coming down to the ground. most of us are dry right now. all of us are very warm. it is 74 in lexington.

here in columbia, 74 degrees. overcast sky. wind out of the south, southwest at about 11 miles per hour. and a whole set of -- we have a stationary front just over the northern part of the state lifting out. but the cold front -- pushing through, has not made its way toward the palmetto state. it will stall out at least for a day or two. it will give us more chchces for rain. as we go through the models, this afternoon, we have a chance of light showers. and into the evening and overnight, we will see light scattered showers. by tomorrow morning, we will have a better chance for rain. especially as we get into midday -- a first round will come through around lunch time. and a second round, very likely around the evening rush hour. that will push off with a little more rain showers into the overnight. for today, we are still on track for a high in the middle to upper 70s. here in columbia, we should be hitting a record of 79 degrees. that will break the record of 78.

we will be dealing with the rain. but right now, the forecast looks for -- new year's eve around midnight -- a lesser chance for rain. very mild, 52 degrees. we have to get through the rain first. rain is possible. other than starting off a foggy in the morning -- tomorrow, a high of 74 degrees. a good chance that we could be looking at a lot of rain going into new year's eve. during the day, a high of 70. the rain will taper off into the afternoon and evening. and then, the wintertime feeling is about to come back. by new year's day, 56, for the high. saturday, 52. we could be waking up by monday morning with a low of 34 degrees. a lot of sunshine. with a high of 45. so let's get through the next few days. then the sunshine that everybody wants to see again will finally be back. >> that is a drastic difference between thursday, new year's eve and friday, the first day of the new year. 20 degrees. that will feel like a lot. >> it will feel like more then it should be. it is supposed to be in the 50s.

that is why we love one pot meals. the chicken cacciatore we're making today is a one pot wonder. all we did so far was the coaching on boneless chicken breast in some seasoned flour and brown do that and vegetable oil. if you prefer, you can use cutup bone in chicken instead. just be sure to could get a little longer. now we take the chicken out of the pan. and add some mushrooms. chopped green peppers, onions we will let that cookntil the veggies are tender. before stirring in some beef broth. our favorite spaghetti sauce. and a can of diced tomatoes. yes, the whole can, juice and all. it is ready to serve. rice. or maybe pasta. which will help soak up all the flavors.
