sunshine before the the mother of a rock hill toddler who shot himself to death has been arrested. animal control officers has aged nearly 200 animals. more on those stories in a minute. good afternoon. thank you for joining us for news19 at noon. i'm darci strickland. we start off your newscast today in the capital city where columbia police are investigating at the intersection of queen anne preston streets. a body was found there this morning. we have a reporter on the scene.

>> reporter: that is right. there was a man found in a home that you see right behind me. the columbia crime scene unit is investigating the case. a case that they call, a peculiar event. the police department does tell us that if you have any other information about this, to call crime stoppers. as of now, that is all that we have. we spoke to residents around here who tell us that they stopped buy because they were worried about the woman who lives in the home. we can tell you that the woman is alive. as of now, those are all the details that we have. >> live from the city of columbia. thank you so much. out of richland county, the sheriff is crediting the department crime lab with the salt -- with welding a december murder. the sheriffs department gave details at a press conference this morning. the crime occurred on december 13 at a gas station on lee road. one person shot and killed and another beaten. witnesses say two men

rob them. the police described how the staff cracked the case. this. this case probably would have gone unsolved because these two people were not connected with the victims at all. they were not from the columbia area. we have no reason to tie them to the crime. the crime scene people -- when they processed the victim's car, they were told that on one of the back doors, one of the bad guys had put his hand on the interior walk of the back door. and so they processed that. and they got some dna. we have a profile. we got a hit. >> a 19-year-old and a 21-year-old were arrested in the case. they have been charged with murder. the sheriff spoke about the department's crime lab today, as the woman who helped create the lab steps down.

doctor who says she will continue to work as a consultant. by daybreak this morning, we have some light showers moving all throughout the midlands. pretty much everyone got a little bit of rain. as it went through -- especially over the last hour, it has pretty much fizzled out. any left over showers or sprinkles are in for -- far northeastern kershaw county and lee county. in columbia, cloudy skies and 49 degrees. the wind chill, 47 degrees. we still do have a chance for lingering sprinkles later this afternoon. we will hit a high of 55 degrees. overcast tonight. 47 degrees. by tomorrow, more chances of rain. we're looking at a high of 60 degrees. the rain will not last all weekend. we will look at the seven-day forecast coming up in a few minutes. duke university is studying the effects of the october flood -- and what that did to south carolinians. they want your input. all this week, students will

midlands residents about flood related experiences. if you would like to participate and help the study, stop by the research mobile anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. through sunday. it is located in the parking lot of the vacant piggly wiggly on garners ferry road in columbia. the highway patrol is working to get a portion of i-26th the augusta road, back open. a tractor-trailer flipped around 6:30 a.m. this morning blocking i-26 west near exit 111. there is no word yet on any injuries. multiple crews are in the area. you should expect delays and use caution. authorities say an elementary school teacher found a gun in a student's wheelchair in a chester classroom. officials say the incident happened at chester park. we're told they lifted the student from the wheelchair and quietly removed the gun. officials think the done unintentionally took the gun to school. it is unclear who owns the done

autopsy results have been released for an infant who died after being carried into a creek in ory county last year. officials say the 5-month-old, grace carlton santana crews, drown. the child's mother, sara tony, has been charged with homicide by child abuse. tony told authorities she was carrying her daughter across a creek when the child was washed away. meanwhile, the mother of a rock hill toddler who shot himself and died has been arrested. 29-year-old patricia carter has been charged with unlawful make light of a child. officials say carter left a loaded 9-millimeter pistol on a bed where the boy was laying. in orangeburg county, animal control officers have seized nearly 206 horses. however the director says the agency did not find the horses themselves. they responded to a woman's call who owns the animals.

not take care of them anymore. all of the horses were underweight and had medical issues. out of the horses surrendered, two were euthanized. fifteen of the remaining 20 had already been taken to rescue shelters across the state. the other five are being cared for by the orangeburg animal control. but they will eventually be rescued to other agencies. and columbia, police need your help finding the drivers of a truck they say was used to steal $3500 worth of fireworks. officers say the truck that you see here was seen on the 500th block of monticello road shortly before 6:30 monday, december 28. police believe the car -- the truck, is a black 1992 or 1993 extended cab pickup truck with black rims and a silver stripe. anyone with information that can help investigators find out who is responsible for this crime,

at south carolina. lindsey graham is speaking about his failed presidential bid and what he feels are major issues the nation will face this year. lindsey graham ended his 2016 campaign for president just before christmas. we will sit down to talk with him later today and will have his comments tonight on news19. republican presidential front-runner donald trump will make a campaign stop in rock hill tonight. ors will open at 5:00. the event is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. marco rubio will make a stop in columbia today. he is attending an event at carolina haven on bluff road at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon. tomorrow, he will join several other gop hopefuls for a foreign here in columbia. the event is being moderated by house speaker paul ryan and senator tim scott. it is being -- is taking place at the convention center from 8:30 a.m.

american employer is out of a strong 292,000 jobs last month. that suggests that the u.s. economy may defy global trends and expand at a solid pace this year. the labor department says the unemployment rate remains at 5% for the third straight month, as more americans started working for -- looking for work and found jobs. two men arrested on suspicion of supporting terrorism are due in federal court today. the iraq refugees were arrested in sacramento and houston. investigators say at least one of the men spend time fighting in syria before returning to the u.s. a philadelphia police officer shot multiple times as he sat in his march car is expected to survive. police say the officer was ambushed last night as he sat in his car. a gunman fired a total of 13 shots at close range hitting the officer and his vehicle. the officer returned fire hitting the gunman at least

but other officers quickly arrested him. president barack obama mocked conspiracy theorists after the national rifle association -- for pushing imaginary fiction, as he described, his plan to tightenen gun control -- as modest first steps toward tackling gun violence in america. obama's actions on guns have drawn major attention and the president's campaign with the democratic candidates backing him and the republicans unanimously voicing opposition. yesterday the new york times indicated that the president won't back any candidate that does not support common sense gun reform. documents reviewed by the associated press on sexual assault reports grew by 50%. and that was in the 2014 and 2015 school year.

the weekend a montrial traffic camera captured stunning images of a silly owl over a highway. a series of images were taken on january 3 by a traffic camera over highway 40. the canadian broadcasting for -- corporation reported the photos. in the photos, the owl appears in the corner of the frame and slides toward the camera. and then right past it. this is a story specifically

otherwise, the rain has stopped for now. but the temperatures really have not gone away -- as far as warming up anytime soon. it is 48 in lexington. and 45 in winnsboro. orangeburg, 49. the family and columbia. 49 degrees. and overcast skies. light wind out of the north, northeast. the wind chill feels a little colder at 47 degrees. the setup we have now -- is a stationary boundary off of the coast of -- has been around for several days. it is slowly pushing away. and the area of low pressure is allowing the moisture to come in. we will not be warming up that much. nevertheless, we will be in the 50s. high today, 51 in winnsboro. saint matthews, 54. sumpter, 54. columbia, a high of 55. we could see a sprinkle or two as we go through the afternoon and evening. by tonight, just overcast skies. the rain will end. a low of 47. all the lows tonight will be in

and a stationary boundary pushes off into the atlantic, we will be watching the next chance of rain, which has already southern plains. this area of low pressure and this cold front is starting to move into the mississippi valley. as it moves toward us, we will get another chance of rain by tomorrow. long. the amount of rain we are expecting between now and midnight, a sprinkle at best. as we go through tomorrow, we will see more rain. but the amount of rainfall we're looking at -- maybe less than a quarter inch of rain. that is it. it is going to be gone. and we will start clearing out. tomorrow, with the rain, we will have a high of 60 degrees. then as we get into sunday -- it will start clearing out. but it will be sunny. it will be windy. a high of 62 degrees. then the weather pattern for winter starts to settle in. by monday and right through the week, highs in the upper 40s to lower-50s. the lows will get down around or below freezing. that is where we should be for

cake, we decided to create birthday cookies that bring together some of his favorites. we combine some softened butter, a good amount of peanut butter -- that can be smooth or chunky, and an equal amount of granulated sugar and brown sugaga when that isismooth, we add a couple of eggs and a splash of vanilla and let that go until it is next. then we add the typical dry ingredients. flour, baking soda salt -- along with -- a package of banana cream pudding mix. and since noel this -- and since no elvis cookie would be complete without chocolate and give it some crunch. come you can make it bite-size or you like. let me tell you, these cookies are fit for a king.
