outages, closings and cancellations. good evening and thank you for being with us on this friday. a winter weather advisory is in effect for a majority of the midlands. whitmire is already seeing some snow. police asking residents to take extra precautions if you go out. more on that in a moment. daniel bonds a joins us now with details on what we can expect later tonight. >> the best thing to do tonight is stay off of the roads. you can see the rotation bringing in more rain and potentially more winter weather across portions of the midlands. we are starting to see a light in mix moving through parts of newberry county. we will see an opportunity for rain, sleet, a

we do have that winter weather advisory that includes most of the midlands with the exception of orangeburg, calhoun county. if you can avoid being on the roads tonight that is the best thing to do. tonight we expect a wintry mix to occur. looking for low temperatures of 32 degrees. tomorrow everything begins to move out then we are left with some clouds. we will take this forecast and break it down further in and tell you exactly what you can expect coming up in a few minutes. >> that advisory means we could see some freezing rain or snow making for some slippery road conditions on bridges and overpasses. several hundred tons of salt are ready to be spread if needed. sonia gutierrez spend time with the cruise tonight with more on

being done. >> reporter: good evening, crews were expected to get out earlier today but as you can see they are still hard at work. right now there are 40 trucks out in the city of columbia ready to respond to any freezing conditions. they do have salt but they don't expect to use much of it. in fact, they say, the potholes are the ones of that might get worse during these freezing temperatures. because of that they want to remind you to drive carefully, even if you don't see snow on the ground. just to be very careful. earlier today we did speak to a scdot engineer who gave us an update on the potholes. >> some areas we will have to cut some of those pot holes out and

right now we are having some trouble receiving hot mix asphalt because all of the plants are closed. so we are repairing those and those will be temporary repairs. as a come back up we will readdress them. >> reporter: the emergency management division gave us the latest update, over 39,000 if your home is without power there are some warming shelters across some counties. to get the locations

back to you. >> while part of the midlands may see a little snow it won't be anything like our friends in north carolina. in charlotte today's schools and county agencies were closed. a number of airlines stopped all flights. they are expecting more snow overnight tonight but things certainly will be improving by sunday just in time for the championship game when the panthers and cardinals go at it. it is expected to be clear and cold sunday night. the weather team will be tracking these conditions and snow across the state for the latest follow them on twitter. with south carolina having the first primary election coordinator say it is important for you to cast your ballot. joyce ctte takes us inside the election office as they get ready for the primaries. >> reporter: she is the election coordinator for richland county. >> it is a lot of work that we put into it. >> reporter: the office is testing

>> it is a personal preference, we just want people to vote. the busier we are the happier we are. >> absentee voters can vote at the richland county office now for the primary. if you are a registered voter the deadline to register to vote in the primary is january 27th. police searching for a man they say he assaulted someone in five points. the suspect in the picture here is accused of punching a man in the head causing him to fall and hit his head on the concrete. police say this happened on green street. we are told the victim is in stable condition. if you have any information on the suspect call crimestoppers. police need your help

man that has been missing for seven months. he is john martin, police say he has not been seen since june 15th 15th of last year. if you have information on his whereabouts call crimestoppers. the search continues for a woman a woman who has been missing for ten months in calls -- in calhoun county. colleen scott had recently lost her home and told her mother she needed to clear her head but she has not been seen since. if you have information on her whereabouts call crimestoppers. central carolina tech offering students in for counties free tuition beginning this summer. they will provide students from clarendon, lee and her sure counties two years of tuition for one program of study. the program does not cover other costs.

we have seen a mixture of everything so far across the state. in the midlands it has been mostly rain and freezing rain. 33 degrees right now in camden. 300 in newberry. above freezing in columbia. 35 degrees in sumter. we are starting to see a little more precipitation come into the midlands. all of this is moving towards the north. will we see a little bit of a wintry mix? that is the expectation for the overnight hours. this is what we are expecting for the next 48 hours or so. we will see an opportunity for a wintry mix late tonight and early tomorrow morning. by mid morning it will wind down. as we

the clear then. as we go into saturday afternoon we will start to see more sunshine. sunday we should see a lot of sunshine. if you have plans to go to the game it should be fine. it will be chilly but all of this will be history by then. we are talking a little bit of freezing rain in the northern midlands. we could also see some sleet or a little bit of snow as well. that will be the case all across the midlands. that is why there is that winter weather advisory for most of the midlands until 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. not a lot going, we still think there may be trace amounts for a good portion of the midlands. maybe, just may be a little bit more in the northwestern portion of the midlands. keep in mind in whitmire they have already had a dusting. the forecast will not change a

and tomorrow morning. highs tomorrow in the mid-to upper 30s, low 40s all across the midlands. sumter you will be 38 degrees. this is what we are expecting for the next the seven days. 400 in the capital city tomorrow. 590 on monday. another system approaches on tuesday and we will warm up to 650 before we see a chance of rain on wednesday. mostly sunny by friday with high temperatures right around 550. we will continue to monitor the weather. if you are home tonight, temperatures will be below freezing, black ice could be an issue on some of the roadways
