prerelease center. zachery reaves should be considered armed and dangerous. an hour and a half after he got away he got past a fence, broke through a window and stole a gun, ammunition and cash from the academy christian school. authorities say he was last seen wearing a department of corrections universe. he had -- uniform. he had two years left a on his sentence. an apartment fire displaced two families at 4:30 a.m. this morning. crews were able to get the fire under control by 5:00 a.m. in the morning. firefighters tell news 19 there are no reports of injuries. the fire marshal is investigating. fort jackson opened this afternoon with a ribbon cutting. it is named after a general who earned the medal of honor in world war ii. officials say the facility will

has -- often times cervical cancer has no signs or systems. a doctor from palmetto health. this is something you talk to your patients about because cervical cancer you could have it and not feel bad? >> that's right. the most common symptom of cervical cancer is no symptom. most of the time it is picked up on a routine exam. >> let's talk about if this is a preventative cancer. i read it is preventative. there are risk factors for getting cervical cancer that we can control? >> number one risk factor is virus. the second most common cause is smoking and the third most common cause is anything that decreasing immune system, hiv infection or other problems. >> let's talk about smoking. that surprises me. how is that a link? how does smoking --

effects how the body heals. if you have been exposed to hpv, and then your immune symptom can't fight it off. that is probably the most common thought. >> hpv is something that i would say 15 years ago most people haven't heard of, now it is something we heard of a lot. talking about getting this vaccine in south carolina and offering it to teenagers, what is hpv and how to you get tested? >> it is a common infection, we get through sexual contact and it has no symptoms. you are exposed to it. it can cause warts on our skin. that is something.

cancer changes on the serve ix. how do you get tested for it? >> the most common way is to have the pap spear. we can do the dna test on the sample to see if the virus is there. and then sometimes we actually to an exam and we can see the virus on the skin. >> is hpv something -- if you go to your doctor once a year, and you get your yearly exam and that is all you are doing, do you have to ask to be tested? >> i think it is something to discuss with your provider. there are sometimes where we will offer the testing at the same time we do the pap smear but sometimes it is a special request. if we are suspicious for that there are tests that could be done. something to have a conversation with with your provider. >> why is cervical cancer hard to detect? >> because it is not something

research next. according it a study breast- feeding could save 800,000 lives a years. the researchers said they are finding breast milk is medicine for babies. the lives of 823,000 children world wide under 5 could be saved every year. they say 20,000 breast cancer deaths could be prevented. we heard an apple a day could keep the doctor away but champagne could keep alzheimer's away. drinking three flasers every day -- glasses every -- glasses every day could prevent alzheimer's. it could wart off brain diseases and increase memory. a spokesperson for the alzheimer's society said the

i know we have all talked about this and tried to figure it out. what is better diet or exercise? what will help us lose weight? diet or exercise? now experts say working out might not be enough to take off the extra weight according to researchers at the university of new york. they found that people don't burn extra calories even if they exercise more and that focus on diet is also needed. and as we focus on diet you are going off online and on twitter which we love. get a shot of this. we said people were posting on twitter. pictures of their empty mozzarella sticks. such as this. deputies say she may be in the rock hill area and she suffers from a medical condition. anyone with any information should contact crime stoppers at 1-888-crime-sc. well, it is hard enough to change doctors with a long waiting list and transferring records. your records. well, that is what happened to many patients. having to deal with that for weeks. the office has been closed. the sign on the door just says problems. when we called the number listed there was no answer and the mailbox was full. we asked the department of labor what the responsibilities responsibilities of physicians are. >> you have to provide those

>> if you have requested your records from your physician and you still have not received them or can't get in touch with your physician you can file a complaint at llr.sc.gov. renewing your hunting or fishing license, the department of natural resources opened an express service office at the state farmers market. you can renew licenses, permits and tags and water craft registrations. the commissioner says this is a great partnership. >> we want more traffic on the farmers market at all times and having this facility here, the people who come here, just right here on the market, next to our farmers, more clients -- stronger client base for the restaurant here. just building up traffic at the

>> the dnr says it will provide plenty of parking that was a concern at the agency's downtown office. now, the midlands most accurate forecast with chief meteorologist jim gandy. >> and it has been a beautiful day today. plenty of sunshine. right now temperatures 60 degrees. winds at 10 miles per hour. now tonight the wind will diminish. skies will be clear. expecting a low temperature of 30 degrees and then tomorrow we will see plenty of sunshine, back up to 64 degrees for a high temperature. on sunday a high of 70. 73 on monday. tuesday 73. with an increasing clouds and then wednesday a chance of showers and a few thunderstorms with a high of 68. let's get one more look at our traffic around the e area for this afternoon. and first of all, let's take a look at what we are seeing. a little slow down here in the westbound lanes of i-20.

we have one accident that we showed you earlier on highway one. another accident on broad river road heading out. it doesn't steam be effecting the traffic too much. through malfunction junction a slow down right now and we are seeing a slow down on highway one. if you are going from downtown a harborson boulevard, not too bad but it will take you 12 minutes and from downtown to lexington on highway 378 it will take 24 minutes. it was longer so at least there the times are beginning to improve. ladies, back to you. >> thank you. a college held a ground breaking ceremony today. they are expanding the campus. it is in campden off interstate 20. the school received state funding for the project.

variety of programs. -- students in a variety of programs. new initiative to get more students a college education. seniors can know to central carolina technical college for two years for free. no one is turned away from this. all students must start at college after graduating high school. you have to have a 2.0 and test into college course work through placement exam scores. the president says this is a great way to build the economy. >> historically 15% of the students that graduated fromom high school, our goal is to double that to 30% of the students straight from high school and then not only have the two year degree and a

for the industries in the area. >> make sure the let your juniors and seniors know about the program. the first of its kind in the state and the scholarship will be available at least for the next four years. costing $250,000 each year. students from orangeburg county gathered for the outstanding character recognition program. all fifth grade students were asked to write an essay on the character strait of their choice and today the winners were recognized at a gathering. it is put together each year by the non-profit group orangeburg county character. the program gets students and faculty excited. >> it is an initiative they all enjoy. again, sometimes in the world we hear about what people are doing wrong, it is good to hear when people are doing things right.

promote it and encourage it and get more people to do it and bring people together to honor those who do. >> 17 schools were represented at today's event. this is the 14th year the awards have been given out. 45 students at north central middle school competed in a geography bee. he has been coaching the students. ever read a book in one day? if you answered no, you needed to be at the middle school today. the students got the chance to hear every single word of the

we want to make sure all of our viewers are on top of all of the research and everything that goes into making sure that we stay healthy. our question now is what is the best prevention? >> the best prevention is to see your healthcare provider and get a regular pap smear. cervical cancer is curable if found early. i want say make sure you are seeing your healthcare provider and getting your pap smear. the timing will be determined by you and your provider. the second thing is, if you smoke, stop smoke. that is very important. i think if you do those two things it will make sure you are not among those counted as having cervical cancer. >> is the only purpose of a pap smear to determine whether there are cancer cells? >> it could also pick up other

is for cervical cancer. when you come we are doing other things. making sure you don't have other things. but the main purpose is to pick up cervical cancer. >> how we do not do a good enough job of taking care of ourselves. you see things. it is easier to prevent than cure. here is your chance to talk about that. >> we are taking care of everyone else and we forget to put ourselves on the list. take care of you. if you don't you can't takeke care of everyone else. if it has been several years, i say i am glad you made yourself a priority. if it has been a long time, just go. because i think when i see a woman and i diagnosis her with

more than fiver years, so -- 5 years. so 3 to 5 years get the appointment. >> what type of symptoms? >> he may or may not have pain. abnormal discharge or pleading. but it is a silent grower. >> that is frightening. >> scary. >> hammers home even more the importance of getting the annual exams. like you said, we put everybody else first, what do you see in research as far as early detection when it comes to other cancers? >> i think there is a lot of research with that and whether or not we are utilizing the mammography and the techniques there, we are searching for a wonderful blood test that will tell us it is the. i wish we had the answer but it

about your concerns and having a good physical exam. >> the hpv vaccine. tell me about it. >> it is designed to help build your own immune symptom, build anti-bodies. so if you are exposed it could fight it off and there are three that are approved by the fda. one has two types. ththe is one that has four types. and there is one that has nine types that has most of the high risk viruses. so we have three now that are approved by the fda. >> who is right for the vaccine? >> right now the indications are for any child or young adult, 9 to 26 for women and men 9 to 21. most of the time vaccines start at 11, 12-years-old but given up to 26. >> there is controversy surrounding the vaccine, what

>> i think it is a great conversation to have with your doctor. you have to look at the evident for yourself and make a decision for yourself. i think if you have this opportunity get a vaccine that could prevent cervical cancer, and then also prevent all the extra pap smears and treatments, it is probably worth consideration. [ indiscernible ] >> we know 14,000 women each year in the united states are diagnosed with cervical cancer. many will die from cervical cancer. if it is something like a vaccine to prevent it, it is something that i think deserves consideration. >> thank you so much. good to see you.
