together today... for one cause: to stop gun violence. news19's colby gallagher takes us inside how one columbia church joined in "stand up sunday." 3 "you never get over the loss of a child. especially when it happened, senseless, to gun violence."marcus patrick bryant was only 21-years-old when he was shot and killed in 2001 by a man who had been released from a new york prison. his father, marvin bryant, says it happened five months before his daughter was born."not only did i lose my child, my son, she lost a father that she did not have the opportunity of growing up to know."his father believes with stricter gun access, his death could have been prevented. he's used the past 15 years to fight for this cause -- a cause that has only grown since the fatal shooting of 9 people at emanuel ame church last june.natbryant was among the many taking a stand with gun sense s-c at various south carolina churches.

the columbia chapter and says stand up sunday is meant to raise awareness."if your background check is not complete or if you are just a kid and find an unlocked gun in the house, this is dangerous. this could be a tragedy."bryant and sullivan took their stand at washington street united methodist church, one of 1,300 churches participating in the state. dr. john evans led the service there and hopes the talk will inspire listeners to join in. "we're trying to keep things real simple. the first thing is to try to get our state house and our governor to begin to get serious about background checks."bryant says his son and the other victims' lives will not be in vein because they're now the very reason why change is coming. minutes. mary. 3 south carolina department of corrections is looking for an escaped inmate... they say... broke into a school just hours after his escape from prison... a department of corrections spokesperson says 26-year- old... zachery lee reaves... stole a 38 handgun... and cash from the school ... after he escaped from the the catawba pre-release center... monday night.school authorities found the front door of academy christian school... shattered tuesday... rocks and a trail of blood... were found inside. reaves was serving an eight-year sentence for second-degree burglary. school officials didn't comment on why the gun was in the building. 3 more than 1 million low-income residents... in 21 states could soon lose their government food stamps... if they fail to meet work requirements... that began kicking in this month.the rule change in the federal supplemental nutrition assistance program... or snap... was triggered by the improving economy -

gathered at the martin luther king jr. park.... on green street... to make sure kids have a great start to the second half of the school year. numerous vendors and community groups had booths set up where the parents and children could pick up information...the idea was that parents pick up a passort... visit the booths... and get information... and then the first 500 people who returned their completed passport received a free backpack.organizers talked with us about why these events are so important during this time of year. 3 this event is definitley important because so many in our community needs school supplies. again, all of the typical back to school events happen in august, but year round, those individuals that are especially underserved need school supplies. they need the pencils, the paper, the pens. this is something we're trying to do, along with our community partners, to try to replinish those school supplies during the second semester of school.families could also participate in health screenings and sports

dental screenings... haircuts... manicures... and some zumba... along with other entertainment. 3 some folks in columbia spent this afternoon learning about ways they could give back to the community. it was through an event called community connect... good shepherd lutheran church hosted the one stop shop for people who want to serve... but don't really know where to start. their goal was to help plug people into different service projects in the area. organizations say this event... is just another example of the partnership between the church and community. 3 these kind of events, church fairs, it's our way as directors and organizations to be able to come out to the church and say thank you. they support us. they support us with dollars. they support us with volunteers. they ask very, very little of us. so these kind of events are a way of us introducing ourselves to the wider church community and it's very, very help. more than 25 organizations and

columbia area... were there. 3 the vietnamese american association... here in columbia.... welcomed in the new year today.they celebrated with cultural performances... food... games and a fashion show. last year close to one thousand people came to the celebration. 3 sherman's army made an appearance in lexington today... for the civil war winter muster & candlelight tour.the event commemorates events that took place in and around the lexington area... during the civil war.there were demonstrations of drill... children games... cooking... and camp life... among other things.this is all so people could see what life was like for the average person during the civil war. 3 it's a great opportunity to learn more about the war and really what the every day solder kind of faced. a lot of people learn about robert e. lee and general sherman but this is really trying to focus on some of the every day life was like for the common solder.
