how to from the station that is on your side. you're watching "friends at 5:00". good friday evening. i'm darci strickland and in lexington county a man is charged with felony dui after an accident this morning. he's 21-year-old darius sutton. it happened near lexington industrial park. corner has identified the person killed as 44-year-old valerie roads. he was traveling the wrong way and crashed into a vehicle. she was driving that vehicle and he crashed and died at the scene. another driver was taken to the

and siton is being held in the lexington county jail and the accident is under investigation. deputies continue to look for a man who was shot last night. it happened at 8:00 and the victim was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition. no word on a motive or even a suspect at this time. if you have information. call crime stoppers. >> very sad story, lancaster county. a 22-year-old man was found dead in his truck, after he accidentally killed himself while playing russian roulette. they said they found out he shot himself while trying to buy a gun. according to the sheriff, he and two others drove to get a gun and the person who owned it told him he could take it if he could successfully play russian roulette.

the mayor said the crane was being lowered because of the high winds when the accident happened. the person killed was sitting in a parked car. >> the crane fell and landed across several cars. and it landed across an intersection that stretched a full block. >> video is unbelievable. >> now, onto missouri, in joplin, their crime spree is over, they're a couple and they were wanted for a series of robberies an abductions in alabama and in georgia. they were found overnight in florida after a gunfight with police. fitzgerald died and harper is under an armed guard at the hospital and faces home invasion and robbery and false imprisonment and "grand theft auto." bug spray makers are going to have a bump in sales.

>> folic acid works in the developmental system. we're not sure how but it takes 3 months, to get into a habit of getting to do something new and then it is in the pathway of the reproductive system. and what happens is when conception happens and the cells divide, our bodies start out as a flat plate and then about day 18, our bodies fold into a tube. and now, as it folds up, it starts to close along the spine area. and where it doesn't close, it is where we get these defects. like i said, you know, by the time at 28 days, it's when everything is closed, so the baby is the size of a coin and mom don't know she's pregnant and defect have happened and they can't be undone. >> well adele dixon joins us to

did you know when you were pregnant that he would have this birth defect? >> no, we didn't know, we didn't know that we were going to have a birth defect. the day that he was born, after he was delivered, the doctor just kept looking at his head and rubbing it and we knew something wasn't wrong and they started running tests and it's where the skull doesn't fuse together so the brain tissue grows on the outside. it's shocking. >> it had to be incredibly scary to hear when your baby was born that he may have developmental delays up to 5- years-old. but he's a healthy 8-year-old now. >> and i know, come on out barry. we hear your baby sister is crying, the interesting thing and you can give the baby to mommy.

talking to jane, was that she said, you have to have this folic in your diet prior to giving birth. to becoming pregnant. >> with this pregnancy, i took the prescription folic acid for 6 months before we tried to have a baby. so for 9 months told i had it and i had four times the normal amount to prevent the birth defect. it's a powerful vitamin. >> i want everyone to walk away with, this is the one thing that can be prevented by taking folic acid and the numbers have increased so if you're of an age, you need it in your diet. you never know when you're going to get blessed with somebody like these two.

it's early february here in gandy's garden. there are things like kale that we can enjoy during the winter because they're a hearty vegetable. but believe it or not, in early february, it's already time to start thinking about your spring garden. it won't be too long before we'll be planting that spring garden and there are some things you can plant early like lettuce and now is the time to germinate those seeds so that the plant is ready to transplant.

winter and that's good news, so the soil is building moisture and our soil temperatures are warm lately and they've been in the 50s and we're going to see cold weather here that will take some of those soil temperatures down and because of the warm weather this winter, we've seen those soil temperatures warmer than they usually are. we've learned a few lesson from the october flood. siding the garden is more than having enough sunshine, you have to consider the run off and that's one of the things that we're going to talk about in this coming month, where to site your garden. one of the things that we discovered was that our in- ground garden was susceptible to run off. we'll tell you more that about. however, here in the garden we

planted it with a cover crop, the grass and oats and so far have grown and this is going to be beneficial to the garden. when we plant our spring garden, we'll till all of this in and this will add to the organic material that is in our spring garden. what i have to do now, is i have to figure out what we're going to plant in this part of the garden. and that's something that i'm beginning to work on, but it's something you need to think about as well. in the coming months, what vegetables do you want to plant? we'll talk to jackie jordan about that. in the meantime, cold weather coming in and i've got to go protect the garden. >> jim, thanks.
