coming up on news 19, a deadly shooting overnight and it is not the first time in this area. we'll have details live coming up. >> plus, a temporary fix. a major route in northeast richland county now back open for drivers. >> and do you feel like everyone around you is getting sick? how you and your family can avoid that nasty bug. news 19 this morning starts right now. new this morning, deputies in richland county continue to investigation a deadly shooting in the northeast. good morning. thank you for waking up with us here on news 19 this morning. >> we know it happened about 9:30 last night on seton hall drive. we have an update.

we are here not far from where it happened. this isn't far from clemson road. this is a residential area, a neighborhood. deputies say when they arrived here, they found a crashed vehicle with the victim inside. the victim had multiple gunshot wounds. they don't have any suspects or a motive but they are working on that and investigating this as a suspicious shooting. anyone with information on this asked to call crimestoppers at this point. the other part of this is this really isn't the first time this has happened in the area. in the span of three months right here in the northeast richland county area, just three days ago, a woman was shot in the public parking lot of the rice creek village shopping center. and in december, a man was shot and killed across the street at the gas station.

life. investigating. agent. >> we are seeing the mexican meth, the crystal meth coming across from the border and it is coming directly here w that brings mexican cartel activity, the people that are responsible sold and the money gets back across the border. >> reporter: this is different from what we had before because agent robert murphy says it used to be local people selling drugs and doing drugs. >> more organization, more about the profit motive. a lot of times before, you had users that were stressing the meth business. they would make enough for themselves and their friends. now, it is a business. >> reporter: a business that is particularly dangerous because he says the drugs stay in south carolina. >> we have a user base here and where there is a market, there

>> reporter: should people be worried? >> not worried, aware. >> reporter: because he says it takes a village to combat this war on drugs. >> there has always been a mexican population working and living on a regular basis. what we don't want is mexican cartels that come here strictly for the drug business to blend in those communities and stigmatize that community. >> we know that heroin is affecting every population really. and for whatever reason, we aren't seeing an increase among young people who are usually white and middle class. >> reporter: the cdc says heroin use has double ad among young adults in the past decade. >> we are worried about the poison being dumped on our streets. we don't want the impact on our kids and we don't want the vilence to change the quality of life here that we have in the midlands. >> reporter: while heroin seems to be the most predominant drug used by the cartels, murphy

most abused drugs on our streets. the cdc says those who are addicted to marijuana are three times more likely to be addicted to heroin. >> thank you. the investigation continues this morning after richland county councilman calvin washington was charged with a felony dui saturday night. two passengers in the car in front of him were hospitalized. now, some residents in washington's district say the councilman should have his day in court. others say he should resign now. washington can choose to resign or the governor can remove him if he is formally indicted on charges. >> i feel you should have moral abouts this stuff. i feel you should have dignity. drinking and driving, that is no character. that is no dignity about yourself. >> i think it is a sad day when something like that happens.

standard, at least we think we hold them to a high standard and we find out we don't have any standards. >> we have reached out to the highway patrol for a copy of the incident report as well as a video. troops are have not given us that information yet. we also reached out to washington but have not heard back from him either. spears creek church road is back open this morning after being closed for almost five months since the october flooding. about 10,000 people use the busy northeast richland county road. the dot says crews have finished repairs but there could soon be more work done on the road. >> this is a temporary fix. the dam that has blown out on this location is still not repaired. that is part of what took so long is figuring out what we would do with the m not repaired at this time. >> the dot is ahead of schedule on this project. work was originally expected to continue through the middle of this month.

senate is expected to pick up talk on the roads bill today. last wednesday, senator adjourned with senator lee bright filibustering. he is against the tax increase and says he won't let it pass without every attempt to pass it. the senate president pro tem says he as has all the patience in the world but the state chamber of commerce says it is time to vote or senators show they would rather pay for auto claims from pothole damage than safe roads. let's meet our mom of the day. kathy berry sanders is the mother of two. her daughter nominated her saying there are many different special. she always does what she can to are happy. she wanted to let more mom know that her sister and herself are very appreciative for what they've done. big congrats.

big number in flu cases this year. >> no, technically, the flu- like illnesses haven't really peaked. we haven't had a high number of cases here in the southeast yet t may still happen. >> there is still some time. >> there absolutely is. >> so preventing any kind of illness, anything hike that, hand washing. >> for many of the gi bugs, hand washing and sanitation and infection prevention are best things you can do. >> what are the suggestions as far as hand washing in there are ways -- because there is a time thing but there are ways to help you get through that period of time. tell us about that. >> the biggest thing is know when to use the rest room, after you use the rest room, after you dealt with a pelt or

are caring for someone who is sick especially children. after you possibly had your hands around or on someone who is sick, that is the biggest time to wash your hands, to break that chain of infection. >> and that is the key there to break that chain from something being passed on. if you don't wash your hands, you shake someone's hand -- >> yeah. >> it make me think of that movie with matt damon that came out a couple of years ago. can't think of the name of t washing our hands, what is the right way to do it. >> there are five steps. you need to get your hands wet first and a lot of us skip that step because we are in a hurry. >> really? >> you wet your hands first and then you want to get the soap either bar or liquid and you want to lather up. if you wet your hands first, it helps the soap spread over your hand. you want to lather and scrub for 20 seconds.

as we go throughout the day. only 41 in camden. winnsboro at 50. an area of low pressure in the central lanes with showers and a few thunderstorms now moving through arkansas. that is going to be making its way towards the palmetto state. as we go throughout the morning, we'll go from clear skies to a little bit more cloud coverage and into the afternoon and evening where we will be watching. by 9:00, 9:30 tonight, the showers and storms will be in the upstate slowly making its way down i-26. around midnight, those showers and possible storms will start moving into the midlands. it will start fizzling out by the time it gets into our area. the showers will continue through passing along i-26. by daybreak, most of the shower activity will already be in the piedmont region and we'll be dealing with clear skies all throughout tomorrow. as far as the weather when the

it will be partly cloudy. it will be warm and quite windy and 75 degrees. even up to 79 in orangeburg. here in columbia, 76 degrees with increasing cloud coverage. wind out of the southwest 15 gusting to 25. it will still be windy tonight as the showers and storms start moving through. all of the lows will generally be in the lower to middle 50s. as with you get through tomorrow, lots of sunshine, 65 degrees. another cold front will come through giving us the chance for overnight showers possibly friday morning. by saturday, lots of sunshine up to 62. and by sunday, 67 degrees. as far as the roads right now, checking on the traffic conditions, taking a look at i- 20 eastbound over mile marker 66. traffic in both directions is moving pretty good.

nominee. latest polls show republican donald trump leading marco rubio, ted cruz and the rest of the gop field in several states in play. democrat hillary clinton is expected to rack up more delegates than bernie sanders today which could make her unstoppable. president obama sitting down with senate republican leaders at the white house to talk about the supreme court seat left vacant by the late antonin scalia. the president intends to make a recommendation. the republicans argue the decision should be left to the e next president. testimony continues in the civil lawsuit involving erin andrews. andrews became emotional on the stand monday as she recalled the moment she learned michael barrett had secretly videotaped her while she was naked in her hotel room. andrews is suing barrett as wells at national marriott in tennessee for $75 million over

an interesting story out of fort jackson. vultures taking over. we are told more than 100 birds have been seen in people's backyards going through trash cans and teching pet food. now, they are reducing lasers and fire crackers to try to scare them off. wildlife experts are questioning the methods but t the project manager says it is effective and the safest way to get them to leave. >> basically destroyed the vinyl boots or rub are boots that seal the vent pipes that protrude through the roof of this building. -- rubber boots. and from this destruction, the rain water is able to get inside. the roof is ineffective. >> we are being told it costs around $1,500 a week for this process. a recall of all takata air bag will not make vehicles safer after all. that is according to a top federal auto regulator. this comes in response to

already starting to move welcome back to wltx news 19 this morning. our temperatures are starting off rather chilly all through outthe midlands. only 42 in st. matthews. 47 in bishopville. 41 in camden. a little bit cooler in newberry at 43 degrees. area of high pressure over north carolina will allow us to have relatively nice weather today throughout the afternoon. an area of low pressure and stout showers and storms moving through arkansas. that will be heading our way. it won't be affecting us this afternoon. by after school today, very warm, quite windy and partly cloudy. we are expecting highs to get into the lower and middle and even upper 70s. we are expecting here in columbia 76 degrees with increasing cloud coverage into the afternoon. it will be windy out of southwest, 15 gusting to 256789

thank you for waking up with us. i'm deon guillory. >> i'm ashley izbicki. we know it happened around 9:30 last night on the 400 block of seton hall drive. we have an update. >> reporter: this is right off clemson road, it is -- the area where it happened. this is a residential area. imlet you see the area where deputies responded to shots fired overnight a little bit before 9:30. they found a car crashed with the victim inside. they say the victim was shot multiple times. they don't know of any suspects or possible motives at this time so they are asking anyone with information to call crimestoppers at 1-888-crime sc. we'll continue to keep you updated. not the first time that a shooting has happened in the area. we've had two other ones just in the past three months. spoke to one of the neighbors here. she said this isn't the first time in this neighborhood

if you have information on that, please call crimestoppers. we'll continue to keep you updated as we continue to gather more about information about the circumstances surrounding this. back to you. >> thank you. let's take a look at the rest of your midlands rundown. a richland county day care worker is waking up in jail accused of hitting a baby. 51-year-old barbara priester charged with unlawful neglect of a child. deputies say about three weeks ago, she hit an 18-month-old in the face with her hand. this is while she was working at kinder academy day care. she has been fired and the baby did not receive any injuries. in kershaw county, a family starting over after a fire destroyed their home. it happened on friday night on thunderwood lane. benjamin vacarros with asleep when the fire started. he was able to get out unharmed. his wife stacy was out of town with their three small children. if you would like to help them,
