people have been getting phone calls asking for donations for the wolterman family and now hamilton police have a detective assigned to finding out who the scammers are. they believe three local numbers are being used to mask the fact that the scammers are actually calling from out of the area. they' ve been asking people to donate to local police and firefighters. those calls started in the days after patrick wolterman' s death, and haven' t stopped. >> it' s really just a shame and it' s disheartening that somebody would take advantage of people' s goodwill and people' s want to help. andrew: there are two official ways to donate -- through first financial bank or through a go fund me page set up in the memory of patrick wolterman by landon watts. if you get a phone solicitiation, hang up and report the call to hamilton

reporting live andrew setters, , wlwt news 5. lisa: police need your help finding the driver accused of jumping a curb and killing a runner in mount auburn. the wanted driver has been identified by police as 24-year-old thomas stidhum. cathy chatfield was hit and killed last month near the intersection of dorchester and reading road. at the time, cathy was taking part in the annual seven hills run. police say the driver did nothing to help cathy following the crash. >> he had the presence of mind to remove a license plate from the car and run away. and he had that in his mind, i' m assuming, to throw off the police and in any way not connect him to this crash. lisa: crimestoppers is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest. the number is 513-352-3040. new video this morning of a robbery and shooting at a north college hill business where the owner of the business was shot in the back. police hope new video can help identify the person who shot the

automotive. it' s surveillance video from a nearby business. 63-year-old joe leach is in critical condition. police still don' t know if he was targeted for some reason or if this was a crime of opportunity. lawmakers at the nation' s capital appear to be laying the ground work for a contentious 2016. leaders from both parties are showing that major hurdles remain if anything is going to get done in president obama' s final year in office. wlwt news 5' s miriah turner has more on this latest battle. miriah: lisa, after many failed legislation to president obama' desk repealing his signature health care law. on wednesday, house speaker paul ryan announced that he will send a bill to the white house that would repeal obamacare and de-fund planned parenthood. the final vote was 240 to 181. though it got some votes from both sides of the aisle, some democratic opponents to the bill

of its potential consequences. rep. van hollen: apparently the republican new year' s resolution for 2016 was the same as it was in 2015, which is to attack womens' health. miriah: after five years, it' s the first time a bill like this will reach the president' s desk, but president obama has promised he would veto it. from the live alert desk, i' m miriah turner. lisa: reports of an uptick in overdoses in wilmington since the start of the new year. wilmington police officials tell us two of those overdoses have proven to be fatal. they say they suspect a deadly cocktail of heroin possibly mixed with fetanyl is to blame. investigators say since january 1st they' ve seen 12 overdoses. police used narcan for the overdoses that were non-fatal. all the overdoses happened in just a four-day span from last friday morning to tuesday of this week. giving some felons a second chance. kentucky has more than 94,000 people who'

felonies that carry sentences of five years or less. once released, they oftentimes have trouble finding jobs or being accepted into college. kentucky' s governor is urging the state senate to pass a law making it easier for those felons to expunge their criminal records. governor matt bevin says if the bill gets to his desk, he' ll sign it. andy dalton knows how physical the game can be. it has been almost four weeks since he broke his thumb in the last meeting with the steelers. in the bengals last practice, andy dalton was a spectator. it was considered the first full-scale preparation for saturday' s game, and dalton was not dressed for practice. according to bengals.com, tight end ryan hewitt and defensive tackle brandon thompson also missed practice. we' ll have the latest on the team preparing for the steelers on our "ready to roar" special tonight at 7:00 right here on wlwt. the numbers are in and unfortunately you didn'

lottery officials say the $524 million powerball jackpot had no winning tickets sold by last night. the numbers -- 2-11-47-62 and 63, and the powerball is 17. the now $675 million jackpot will be the biggest in u.s. history, beating the march, 2012, jackpot of $656 million. unbelievable. that means the odds go astronomical. kyla: it is a lot. dear chances are something like one in 200 million. good morning. taking a look at the construction in the overnight hours. it is clear but will go back into effect at 11:00 tonight

he is facing six charges including four counts of felonious assault. this child remain in serious condition. a grand jury has made the decision to indict the state trooper who arrested sandra bland. 28-year-old bland died in her cell last year while in custody of the waller sheriff' s office three days after she was arrested by trooper brian encinia during a traffic stop. encinia was indicted on misdemeanor perjury charges. the grand jury decided last month not to indict jail workers on criminal charges. new developments in the investigation into the outbreak of norovirus at a chipotle restaurant in california. the restaurant chain has being served with a federal grand jury subpoena. the federal investigation centers around a chipotle restaurant in simi valley, california, last august. that' s where nearly 100 people became sick with the norovirus. a multimillion-dollar expansion means more beer in cincinnati. madtree brewing has announced it

keep up with demand. wlwt news 5' s miriah turner is here with more on why it not only means more brews, but more jobs. miriah: lisa, the owners of madtree brewing will shell out $18 million at their new location in oakley, not only investing in their business, but also the community. the brewery will quadruple its production, moving to the old rocktenn property just down the street from where they' re located now. the new brewery will have a lot more to offer, including an expanded tap room, cafe, and 10,000-square-foot beer garden to start. they' re also carrying over 50 jobs from their old location, and expect to create 40 more in the next three years. madtree products are already sold in 48 ohio counties and three kentucky counties, and with this expansion hope to stretch their product across the entire region. the brewers association says in 2014, breweries in ohio generated more than $2 billion and accounted for more than 14,000 jobs. madtree brewery'

is likely to keep that trend going. lisa? lisa: thanks. speaking of the local brewery, it' s expanding in another way, with a new stout. madtree will release their rubus cacao chocolate raspberry stout today at noon. the brew first made its debut back in february, 2014, but was only available in draft form. starting today, the stout will now be available in cans. the brewery describes the flavor as a sweet chocolate stout with a slightly tart raspberry flavor. u.s. companies had the highest monthly job numbers of the year in december. payroll processor adp says businesses added more than a quarter million jobs last month, . construction and retail saw the biggest gains. the government will issue its official jobs report tomorrow. economy experts expect a slightly lower number of jobs added and a steady unemployment rate. on the other side of the job front, macy' s announced that it

and what is the proof on those? i would be happy to test that out for you. we are like scientists. thank you. we have an update on the faa' s mandatory registration of drones. the agency now says more than 181,000 drones have been registered since the database began 2 1/2 weeks ago. the faa launched a new app this week that tells consumers where they can and can' t fly their drones. do you play the brain game app lumosity? the california company behind it now must pay a $2 million fine for claiming its games can improve your brain function. the ftc says there' s no science to back up the claims. under the settlement agreement. , lumos labs must give customers an easy way to scrap their auto-pay subscriptions, which cost about $15 a month. a new service at chick-fil-a is making some parents' visits a

the buzz around here and what people are talking about. right now, we are live in newport. lisa: thank you. two boys from brown county are safe this morning, thanks to the courage and quick-thinking of their neighbors. miriah turner is at the live alert desk with the latest on the heroic rescue. what a day out there! miriah: the two boys are recovering at children' s hospital after falling through ice on a lake. they were treated for hypothermia and her neighbors are being credited for saving their lives. tamerlan neville says she heard their cries and instantly knew something was terribly wrong. she got her husband and son , they began the rescue. john and his father got into a boat, breaking the ice as they went, managed to get close enough to the boys for john to pull them into the boat. paramedics were on scene by then

hypothermia and exposure. by the sounds of it, they are lucky to have made it out a scary situation and lucky to have great neighbors. lisa: that is for sure. by people recovering after a boiler explodes at crossroads church on the west side. one of them suffered serious injuries. we say to people were working on the boiler at the church on bridgetown road in miami township wednesday, when it exploded. there were no fire and no major structural damage done to the building. the fire department says everything was contained inside the boiler room. >> it is blow up. it blew up the windows in the area -- or the boiler' s work. it didn' t blow out any other windows throughout the building, just the immediate furnace room windows were blown out. lisa: one of the repair had serious custard his face, and

and bruises. services will go forward. the white house is now casting s claims the president' s spokesman says the government' s early analysis consistent with claims that a hydrogen bomb was tested there. some experts say it' s possible north korea tested another type of bomb instead. north korea most recently claimed to test a nuclear weapon in 2013. a baltimore judge has ruled that one of the police officers charged in the death of freddie gray, will have to testify against the officer who drove the police wagon. william porter' s trial ended last month in a mistrial. this coming monday the trial for the wagon driver, ceasar goodson is set to begin. he' s facing the most serious charges of all six officers charged in gray' s death. he has been charged with second-degree depraved heart murder, manslaughter, reckless

assault and two counts of vehicular manslaughter. here at home, and early-morning car fire is under investigation in miami township. investigators responded to the 7700 block of janda cres. the car was unoccupied and park in front of a house. the car suffered charring and a has spoken to the owner. more expansion and renovation for cincinnati' s riverfront. we are learning of plans for a music festival -- a music venue. while there were supporters for the proposal, there has been a lot of opposition from those will fear that competition will take money from existing menus. --

lebron james has dropped johnny manziel is a business client. james says they had ended a marketing agreement with manziel. maverick carter said the decision was made partly so that manziel could focus on his personal life. happening this week in fairfield, students are learning how to stand up to police and today, a nationally known anti-bullying speaker will do the kids for three assemblies. the intermediate school is hosting up stander week. it is a similar rally you are looking at. the school has planned activities in different subjects each day. hoxworth is renewing its call for blood donations as temperatures drop. this month, you can get a free coffee mug. every donor through january 30 will get an " every drop counts" mug. hoxworth says, it especially needs minority donors. it' s hosting two big blood drives.

lisa: welcome back on a thursday, 5:52, 29 degrees. we want to tell you about a really great story. north college hill high school held a special ceremony for a local woman who was once a high school drop-out. wlwt news 5' s kyla woods tells us how she went from dropout to doctor. kyla: oh my goodness. we previewed this yesterday. there was nothing in the world like being present. mary did not take the typical route. she made it their all the same. after serving in the army, she worked her way up to being a teacher. that is when mary realized she needed to return to the classroom herself. she eventually received her phd late last year from miami university. when it came time for her commencement ceremony, she chose
