newsroom with what you have learned so far. andrew: we' ve learned that the officer involved in all this was flown from brown county to u.c. medical center by aircare, an indication he is dealing with very serious injuries after an altercation with the suspect. but the way this all happened leaves a lot of unanswered questions. a police officers stopped a man on the street about an earlier incident, and then fell out of radio contact. he was found with injuries to his head and face, and police are searching for 26-year-old kyle moore. they' ll also looking for the officer' s gun. police are familiar with him, they have had contact with him a couple times over the past few weeks. the officer has been with ripley police for about eight months, and there is no word on his condition. lisa: an east price hill man who accidentally shot and killed his son will not face any charges. the prosecutor'

announcement. the 72-year-old says he thought his 14-year-old son, who is supposed to be at school, was an intruder. georta mack died after being shot in the neck. cincinnati police have a victim advocate who' s giving grief counseling to the father to help him through this. mark: the woman charged in a florence crash that killed a grandfather and his two grandchildren will remain free on bond. jessica hood has entered a not guilty plea to charges of back in march, hood' s car hit a group of people as they walked along weaver road. charles napier was killed, and so were his 13 month-old twin grandchildren. hood' s attorney believes the crash was simply an accident. >> she' s trying to deal with this. it' s a terrible, terrible thing. she has no criminal history, no driving history, no speeding, no reckless driving, nothing so this is out of character for her. she' s trying to deal with this the best she can. mark: the attorney says hood did not go off the road and he' s

speeding or distracted. lisa: it is 5:04 right now, allegations of a cover-up in the tests show the city' s water was contaminated with dangerously high levels of lead for nearly two years. now many question how long government officials knew about the toxic water before they revealed the truth. one researcher claims the state altered data to make the water seem safer by eliminating tests from homes that would have shown toxic levels of lead. >> in essence, the state took an f grade for flint water' s report on lead and made it into an a grade. lisa: the u.s. attorney' s office in eastern michigan is investigating the water crisis. flint switched to detroit water in but since there are still october, concerns the national , guard is providing fresh water to residents. mark: the massive powerball s drawing.

high, so they decided to spread the potential wealth. taylor mill was one of four locations state-wide with the freebies. >> we wanted to go out and celebrate this with our players so we' re giving out 1,500 free powerball plays in four different cities all across the commonwealth to thank the folks who purchased the tickets to help us get to the world record and the fact that we' re going to break that tonight. lisa: a lot of those who received the free tickets went ahead and bought an extra ticket anyway to double their chances. mark: avoiding the problems at the polls in 2015, ohio' s secretary of state jon husted is focusing on poll worker recruitment for this year' s presidential election. you might remember the problems at more than 80% of hamilton county' s precincts, in november. most of them stemmed from the new electronic sign-in system. for voters. husted says his office plans on not only helping local counties recruit workers, but train them as well. lisa: the u.s. defense secretary ashton carter will be in fort

attackers, have been killed in terror attacks in downtown jakarta. witnesses say three suicide bombers exploded themselves in a starbucks cafe this morning. there was also a reported blast after police stormed the cafe. two hours of gun battles. lower across the board this morning, reflecting investor jitters after yesterday' street dive. stock markets in china, south korea and japan are among those opening lower. the pessimistic sentiment also following sustained weakness in oil prices. the losses in china came after two days of relatively steady trading. mark: the e. coli nightmare could be ending soon for chipotle. the company' s ceo says the chain is hopeful the center for disease control and prevention will soon declare the e-coli outbreak over for the restaurant chain. it started in october, and has infected dozens of people in

, in akron, ohio. chipotle says its taking extra steps to make sure its food is safe. s powerball drawing is about more than trying to strike it rich, with six lucky numbers. lisa: wlwt news 5' s miriah turner has more on where the money goes and how the cash benefits young people in greater cincinnati. miriah: for tens of thousands of local high school students every time you buy a lottery ticket, you help them achieve their own while the powerball generates the biggest headlines lottery , games administered at the state level also pack a big bang for students. in kentucky 27 cents of every , dollar sold for a state lotto game is set to go toward education this fiscal year. in ohio it' s 28 cents. of course most of the proceeds , from state lottery ticket sales go to jackpot winners. a much smaller portion goes toward administrative costs and to retail stores. lottery workers forecast how much a state can expect in sales each year. because of that you might think the latest powerball jackpot

amount, but officials say that now that there' s a winner ticket sales will taper off and lotto proceeds will return to normal. mark: in case you missed it at 11:00 p.m., we have great news about a local army vet battling for access to a drug he says is keeping him alive. just before christmas, we introduced you to brad giesting. he was diagnosed with a rare soft tissue cancer. he had been traveling back and forth to columbus, to participate in a trial his doctors say was shrinking his tumors. but the drug company morphotek stop the trial saying it wasn' t , working. now 3 weeks after our story aired, morphotek tells us he is one of three patients who will continue to receive the trial drug until further notice. an encouraging update, for brad. >> cincinnati' s certified most accurate forecast. randi: you did not become a

randi: good morning, welcome back on a thursday, 22 degrees. mark: now we can go from powerball fever to oscar excitement. lisa: oscar nominations will be announced this morning in hollywood. the announcements will be made by a few hollywood stars and academy president cheryl boone isaacs. the experts seem to think there are very few locks this year but there is plenty of talk about "carol," which was filmed in cincinnati last year. "carol" could be nominated for best picture. cate blanchett is also expected to get a nod for best actress , and rooney mara could be nominated for best supporting actress. the director of the film todd haynes is also expected to have his name called, later this morning. today' s nomination announcements will be made by guillermo del torro, ang lee, john krasinski, and academy president cheryl boone isaacs. all of the nominees will be announced at 8:30 this morning, and the 88th academy awards

on february 28. always a lot of excitement. mark: should be interesting. we will be following "carol" closely. another group of nominees, for a more dubious award are likely less excited about their nominations. nominees for the golden raspberry awards have been announced. four movies scored six nominations, including "fifty shades of grey" for worst picture, actor and actress. lisa: what? mark: thank you very little. "pixels" also earned a worst picture nomination while star adam sandler was nominated for worst actor for both "pixels" and "the cobbler." that is a double. that hurts. the other movies to score six nominations are the comedy "paul blart, mall cop 2" and the sci-fi feature, "jupiter ascending." the 36th annual razzies will be awarded february 27.

a ripley about an earlier incident. when he made contact with to check on him and found him down. face. he was sent to uc medical with serious injuries. they are looking for 26-year-old kyle moore. police are searching for him. they are confident they will find him. lisa: thank you. not to westchester were police are expected to release more information after a teenager was shot yesterday. police say two mill suspects went inside a house, one of them, shot an 18-year-old. one suspect is about 18 years old or 19 years old.

north charles -- in north charleston, s.c.. i will carcass is set for -- i want caucus is set for february 1. lisa: nbc news is hosting -- as for the democratic candidates they will debate for the 4th time this weekend. nbc news is hosting the debate in charleston south carolina. nightly news anchor lester holt is the moderator. the debate airs right here on wlwt. starting at 9:00. right before news 5 at 11:00. mark: today marks a year since a cincinnati man was arrested on terrorism charges. christopher cornell was arrested last year, after buying two m-15 assault weapons and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. the fbi said the now 21-year-old, planned to wage jihad. by attacking the u.s. capitol with pipe bombs. and shooting government officials. a federal judge is now waiting for the results of a mental evaluation, before scheduling a trial date. officials said the report should be done by the end of this month. lisa: in florence, police need your help identifying two men who they say passed fake cash.

investigators say the two used counterfeit 20 dollar bills to buy food at the arby' s in florence. if you recognize either of the two call florence police. a big day for the hamilton county sheriff' s office -- they finally retired their ledger books they started using during the civil war. these books kept all the records of inmates the crimes they committed and their sentence. this is a hand written ledger book from 1870 at the cincinnati workhouse, or the former jail. the books have been replaced by computers. mark: nice time to update. they are heavy. randi: all of a sudden, years of crime are off your record. right now, this is what you need to know. way warmer today. sitting at 28 degrees. in may not feel all that great usually in january when we are in the 20' s, but compared to the single digits, bringing on! this weekend, rain is returning for most of us. making weekend plans, a will be colder, sunny specifically -- when the, flurries, i will have more in a couple of minutes. lisa: thank you. a local community is rallying around a family in need, supporting a staff member at a school, after her son was hurt in a serious accident. mark: wlwt news 5' s miriah turner tells us how they' re trying to help. miriah: jason' s mother works in the office at a junior high school. jason' s car was hit by a man who had been drinking.

his best friend died. the family is grown in columbus were jason is receiving treatment. jason' s mother asked for blood donations. the junior high school held a blood drive this week to honor the family. jason is slowly improving. he is still in a will chair and on oxygen. family and friends has started a gofundme page that has raised $40,000. mark: thank you. an update now on a new narcan program in kenton county -- to reduce heroin overdose deaths. s police chief, spike jones says, in the last six months, officers have administered five doses of narcan while on duty. four of them were successful in saving lives. chief jones says the narcan was used in piner, walton, covington, and independence. lisa: a warning this morning about whooping cough -- northern kentucky has had 73 cases reported since november 1. that' s seven times more than during the same time frame last year.

seen numbers this high since 2012. a majority of cases are in children 10 to 17-years-old. whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease. the health department offers adults a free t-dap booster and children may also be eligible for a free vaccine. mark: a new proposal to protect animals in these bitter cold temperatures. a proposed law here in ohio would make it illegal to tether dogs outside during extreme weather conditions. some townships and cities in ohio already have their own laws on the issue, but for now, it' s not illegal. as it stands now, in ohio, if a dog has a shelter and is healthy, it can be tethered outside in any weather conditions. a measure in the kentucky senate is moving forward that would require any woman seeking an abortion to first have an appointment with a medical professional. the state already has a consent law on the books, requiring women to receive counseling and wait at least 24 hours before having an abortion. but this bill would require

a medical professional. the bill now goes on to the full state senate. after passing a senate committee yesterday. lisa: a residential parking plan for over the rhine is vetoed by mayor john cranley. this is the second time in less than a year the mayor has vetoed the plan. call for parking permits for 450 spots along residential streets in otr. the cost for a permit would be more than $100 a piece. mayor cranley says everyone should have access to park on the streets that their tax dollars help build and maintain. he also says he thinks the spots have a greater value to taxpayers as metered spots. it would take six votes on council to overturn cranley' s veto. mark: let' s check in with kyla. good morning. kyla: no problems. good morning, everyone. want to take a look at those numbers.
