good morning. i' m lisa cooney. mark: and i' m mark hayes. lisa: just ahead, we' ll have our wlwt news 5' s team coverage out of the roads. but first, randi rico and kyla woods are in this morning with your weather and traffic. kyla: took a quick turn. getting tricky on the roads. randi: temperatures are calle cold enough so it sticks instantaneously. we do have snow showers and the leading edge in through brown and adams county. clinton county has not started to see the activity. it is all turned to blue. this is where the accumulation starts to pick up. middletown to hamilton, really getting going and portions of

a heavier snowbound into butler. it is crossing between illinois and indiana. it will go for the next three to four hours. by 9:00 and 10:00, it will start to lighten up. by lunchtime, most places will be done with the snow. temperatures are 10 degrees warmer than yesterday, 16. by noon, the snow showers are fading away. there could be a flurry this afternoon. temperature-wise, we top out in the mid 20' s today. we get a break tomorrow. let' s get through this morning first. kyla: we have a lot to get through.

burlington in northern kentucky. the snow is sticking to the roads. it would not surprise me if we start to see some actions topping up. this is the time on the morning when you' re not a lot of people on the roads. as more people try to get out, you could be running into some slick spots. it only takes one person to make a mistake to cause a problem. we are seeing one lane of the road fairly snow-covered. the more treated lane, less snow on it. it has been this way through much of 74 and 275.

as we continue on through the morning. lisa: thank you. road crews on both sides of the river are keeping a close eye on the weather. mark: they' re making sure local streets are pre-treated as much as possible for the morning commute. wlwt news 5' s dan griffin continues our team coverage with what' s been done so far. good morning. dan: times are really changing with the flurries coming in. road crews have the pretreating the roads. they have about 60 or so trucks. they have plenty of what they need. interstate 71, traffic is moving along. you can see the roads are starting to show some snow accumulation, as people start heading out for their commute.

kentucky working hard, spreading salt, pretreating the roads. take a look at how they say they are prepared. >> we' ll have 130 trucks out. that' s how many trucks we have in our district, so all hands are on deck for the morning. so we' ll have everybody out. we have plenty of salt on hand. we have over 24,000 tons of salt. and as always, we' ll have three trucks in the cut in the hill to make sure that that' s treated the best that we can for the morning commute. dan: that is a horror story , cut in the hill. be sure you are careful. the side streets. we' re here on sentinel streets. snow has really started to pile up. i think i can make marks now. that is not sticking to the

miriah: winter weather is now in full swing and taking the nation by storm. in fargo, it was just enough snow to brush off the windshield and cause roads to get a little slippery. snow began to fall in fargo early tuesday afternoon. only an inch or so is expected, but the wind is sure blowing it around. ice jams on the rock river in moline, illinois, are causing the river levels to rise a bit. it was heading toward flood stage of 12 feet today. a flood warning is out for the rock due to the ice. in harvey county, kansas, near the town of newton, icy, slick roads were causing accidents along the interstates. areas of freezing drizzle are still affecting much of south-central kansas. then it was bumper-to-bumper traffic on interstate 44 east of springfield, missouri, near northview, all because of a glaze of ice. omaha, nebraska, also got its share of snow last night. while many places aren' t getting much snow as far as inches go, the danger on the roadways is clear. make sure to keep that in mind

you. the reds are stepping up to the plate after pete rose was turned away from cooperstown last month. lisa: the hit king is heading into the reds hall of fame this summer. miriah: it may not be cooperstown, but pete is calling this the first big step. this took coordination between the reds and major league baseball. reds ceo bob castellini said he had to get permission from mlb commissioner rob manfred, who just upheld pete' s lifetime ban. the reds got the green light, and now pete' s hall of fame weekend is scheduled to start june 24th, when the san diego padres come to town. it' s exactly a month before the big ceremony at the baseball hall of fame. pete rose: statue will be fun. number retired will be fun. going into the hall of fame will be fun. i hope it' s fun for the fans that weekend. you know, because i know you' re not coming to see san diego play. the back edge near illinois and indiana. we will be seeing a few flurries late in the day. yesterday morning, a winter weather advisory for the southern communities. our accumulation should be over before noon. double digits are nice to see. most places in the upper teens. you see the quick accumulation as the snow showers start to roll in. cloudy skies and maybe a flurry, upper 20' s this afternoon. 8:00, pretty steady snowfall. the back edge workings way towards downtown. it should be rolling out of the southeastern communities by

when you hear the term "hospice" you typically think of adults who are facing death or a terminal illness. mark: but one of the tri-state' s greatest resources for sick children is celebrating their 20th year of providing hospice care. kyla woods is here with one family' s story of how starshine helps them have hope. good morning. kyla: i got to meet this family. just amazing. starshine hospice believes that children do their best in their own environment, and the landefeld family has seen this first hand. their daughter, scarlett, was diagnosed with just a few months to live, but that was six years ago. annie and her husband, ryan, have given scarlett the best life possible with the help of starshine' s services. the landefelds have been given access to so many life-enhancing experiences for scarlett, such as music therapy, crafts, and relaxation, thanks to starshine. the approach really is to make the best of every day. >> it' s really not about going home to die, it'

randi: it is what we expected, not a huge amount. it is coming up pretty good and the temperatures are cold enough it instantly sticks. a couple of systems where it has taken a while, this don' t help that first. it is cold enough you know the snow is instantly sticking, specially to untreated roadways. you can see the leading edge moving through clinton and island counties. everybody else already has at least a light coating of snow on the ground. currently, a little heavier through our sense of racket and robertson counties. -- bracken and robertson counties. just north of the 275 loop, a decent and rolling through southeastern indiana and michigan of portions of butler county as well. we are expected to see snow showers continue at the current pace probably through the heart of the morning commute.

rolling between indiana and illinois. we are stuck with the snow for the morning rush, getting better between 9:00 and 11:00. by noon, most places are totally done with accumulating snow. winter weather advisory expanded , continuing until 7:00 tonight. this snow is done by noon but a flurry or two is possible the second half of the day. 8:00, 17 degrees. noon, snow showers fade way but a flurry possible, 25. it is not the amount, it is the timing that is the issue. snow covered roadways, what is the latest? kyla: i think a lot of commuters will beginning themselves a two hour delay and i would not blame you if you give yourself a bit of a push back if possible. 71-275, rams completely covered from 275 on 271-75. quite a bit of coverage from the

we are seeing it on the two 75 loop as well. here is route 32 for the eastgate area are going into parts of claremont county. as well as the rural roads, you will see way more coverage as well. you will be the extra time making her way out no matter where you' re heading. 275 on the northern edge of the loop near 71-75 until warned county and butler county, a lot of snow. we will have another check coming up in a few minutes. lisa: thank you. our team coverage of winter weather continues with a check on how cincinnati and northern kentucky road crews are making sure local roads are safe. wlwt news 5' s dan griffin is live with a closer look. dan? dan: good morning. traffic is starting to pick up this morning and it is a good thing road crews were out pretreating. but it looks like the snow is starting to stick a little bit. this is interstate 71, just next to downtown.

we' re seeing a pickup. the other thing we are seeing pickup, accumulation. we can see as the cars are going by. the most traveled part of 71, you can see the asphalt and everything. over a little farther, you can actually see it is starting to pick up. road crews have been hard at work since about 7:00 p.m. last night in cincinnati, have about 50 or 60 truck' s pretreating the roads, trying to make sure everything is safe. and northern kentucky, we' re told the kentucky department of transportation crews have about 69 trucks salting and plowing and making sure the roads are safe. they also have truck dedicated to the cut-in-the-hill, which is very much important for the morning commute. we' re live in downtown, dan griffin, wlwt news 5. mark: thank you. we' re getting a firsthand look of what you' ll see on the roads as you head out this morning. let' s go straight to reporter andrew setters who' s leading the way in our live drive 5. andrew, where are you and what are you seeing now?

spence bridge, dan was talking about the cut-in-the-hill and we just came to that area. it is in better shape than some of the other stretches of highways we have seen because they have a truck dedicated just to try to keep the cut-in-the-hill in pretty good shape. the been sprints ridge -- brent spence bridge is fine on the lord tech. northbound lanes of 75, downtown area, we have driven around the area through parts of northern kentucky as the snow is sticking to the interstate, sticking to the roads, really sidestreets are surprisingly in pretty rough shape because they have a covering of snow on them. on the highways, crews have been able to keep them in pretty good shape. we are not slipping and sliding, but we' re also taking a pretty easy this morning. right now, we are not seeing a lot of traffic on the road with us. it will all depend on how much

comes down, and the timing as we continue through the morning. if people decide to stay off the roads for a while, give the road crews a chance to really do their work, then things might be a pretty good shape. if people hit it hard this morning trying to get to work like they normally would, we could easily run into problems as the snow continues to come down. andrew setters, wlwt news 5. lisa: if you take the bus into work, metro will update its detour hotline all day during severe winter weather. you can call the phone number on your screen from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. for the most current detour information. the number is 632-7538. metro reminds riders whose stop is on a hill to board at the top or bottom of the hill. duke energy is helping the assistance to people in need during these cold winter months. duke donated $315,000 to the heatshare assistance program, operated by the salvation army. the salvation army began

yesterday. mark: many schools are already announcing delays or closures for this morning, and the decision is not an easy one. wlwt news 5' s miriah turner is at the live alert desk now with before making the call to open or close. miriah: it is a very important decision when you' making the call to have or not to have snow days, the decision is not cut and dry, especially when the snow is expected to hit at an inconvenient time. in mason, so far the district has not used up any snow days. last year they used four. the superintendent is the one to make the call. she got up at 4:00 this money to check the roads. every time snow is a risk, she will drive around the streets and walk the sidewalks to see how the accumulation is measuring up. the next step, to contact different district leaders to find out how the buildings are working. in sycamore township, they told us the superintendent does just the same. it is a decision districts take seriously. make sure to check out our

southbound lanes are really starting to pick up. slow spots are starting to infiltrate our entire map. you can see a lot of yellow on the place. 48 miles per hour out of butler county, 74 tour the merge was 75, about 45 miles per hour. you can see montana slowing down and picking up as far as the volume in the eastbound lanes. we are a close eye on that as well. we are just seeing very, very heavy conditions. up to 24 minutes already from the split in the downtown. we' re usually hovering around 18 or 19 minutes. an early jump on that extension of our travel time. traffic is picking up. maybe folks are getting out early to get themselves plenty of time. you want to do that if you' re heading out the door right now. lisa: honoring the firefighter who served his committee for two decades.

roads last night. as of 7:00 last night, crews began operating on 12-hour shifts. the focus again, the morning rush hour today. in all, city crews are responsible for more than 3000 lisa: that is a lot. randi, good morning. closed. they were on a two-hour delay, but they are shutting down. randi: you can see some of the downtown streets as we take a live look from where reporter dan griffin is hanging out. you can see snow-covered roadways, the type of weather that could be tricky, especially on the sidestreets if you' re driving a bus full of kids. something to keep in mind because the snow will continue throughout the morning commute. i know coming down pretty good in fayette union and franklin county' s, indiana, bracken, through kentucky. we have seen the last half hour at least this batch of heavier snow through southeastern indiana.

this is a photo and tweet sent in from -- i' m not going to read the twitter name. it says, creeping up on two inches of snow between batesville and mylan, indiana. you can see snow-covered roadways and portions of southeastern indiana. wanted to, maybe some spots in southeastern indiana, more than that two inch mark. we will take a look at the timeline for an attentional -- additional stop possibility coming up in a few minutes. lisa: thank you. breaking news to tell you about, 20 people have been killed in a terrorist attack on a university in northwest pakistan. security forces killed four attackers, but officials admit they don' t know if there were any additional attackers among the dead. they did warn that recovery operations are ongoing and the death toll could rise. explosions and gunfire erupted on campus of bacha kahn university in charsadda near the

this serves about 3000 students. a surprise conclusion to the retrial of suspended juvenile judge tracie hunter. mark: special prosecutors have dropped all remaining charges. wlwt news 5' s miriah turner tells us more about the unexpected turn of events. miriah: this is something everyone has been watching closely. we could know by the end of the week if suspended judge tracie hunter will serve six months in jail for her felony conviction. prosecutors now say a second trial on the remaining eight counts is not worth the effort or expense. the judge has now given hunter' s attorney the rest of the week to file an appeal for her conviction of unlawful interest in a public contract. hunter and her lawyers are due back at 9:00 a.m. this friday, at which time the judge will either impose the six-month sentence or waive it pending another appeal of her conviction. in 2014, a jury deadlocked on eight of the nine counts against judge hunter. there was no indication from

would be dropped until just yesterday. mark? lisa? lisa: a community mourning the loss of a hero. the middletown fire department is honoring retired firefighter-paramedic scott bruggeman as they prepare to say goodbye. bruggeman died on monday after being diagnosed with sarcoidosis in 2014 after a heart attack. the disease began to attack his heart and lung. he was 45 years old. middletown fire considers his death a medical line of duty death. >> scott was a firefighter/paramedic that a community would want. he was born and raised here. he knew the people here. people knew him. lisa: bruggeman wasn' t just a hero in his community he was , also a marine who fought in desert storm. he also knew how to have fun. his co-works a he was an expert at firehouse pranks. bruggeman' s funeral will take place on friday.

kyla to see how the roads are shaping up. he could get tricky in a hurry. kyla: it is happening now. 275 at the northwest corner near colerain and between there and hamilton, struble is an overpass. we have an accident that sits just under that overpass on the westbound to 75 between hamilton and colerain. if you are traveling and you see the yellow, indicating the very, very slow traffic in that area. 20 minutes on 275. up to 26 minutes. 26 minutes as well on 74 from the indiana side to 75. a pretty decent extension in those travel times. it may even slow down more to the next few hours. how is the forecast? brendan cope 30 much the same as the snowfall totals, -- randi: 30 much the same as the snowfall totals. it arrived about an hour earlier . during the morning rush, that can cause a big change in what

two shots of snow expected this week. one to two inches today. friday, still a big question mark. temperatures today will make it to the upper 20' s. looking at the radar, snow showers basically at this point for everybody, except for extreme eastern highland and clinton counties. blue for everybody, but the deeper blue indicates heavier snowfall rates. starting through areas of the northwest of the 275 loop, moving toward hamilton and middletown, starting to see the snowfall pick up a little bit. harrison through chevy at an that heavier snow as well. pushed off into mason county. little heavier. pretty consistent with that back to indy. the back southern portions of indiana. i think we are at studies no showers up through at least 9:00
