mark: thank you. in the iowa caucuses last night, the republican side had a clear winner. candidate ted cruz raking in the most votes. but on the democrat side, it was a different story. wlwt news 5' s miriah turner is at the live alert desk with the latest. miriah: it appears that among the two remaining democratic presidential candidates, there was no definite winner last night. the caucuses ended early for democrat martin o' malley, who only brought in about 1% of support among caucus-goers, leading him to announce he was suspending his campaign. from early on, it was clear that it would be a tight race between candidates hillary clinton and senator bernie sanders. now with all precincts reporting, clinton being declared the winner. it was a close caucus. hillary clinton was the first among the two to take the stage. bernie following suit not long after. mrs. clinton: i will keep doing

ve done my entire life. i will keep standing up for you. i will keep fighting for you. i will always work to achieve the america that i believe in. mr. sanders: as i think about what happened tonight, i think the people of iowa have sent a very profound message to the political establishment, to the economic establishment, and by the way, to the media establishment. miriah: after months of campaigning, the iowa caucuses are the first presidential contest that counts. going forward, the new hampshire primaries are next on the docket. as far as the democrats go, bernie sanders looks assured of a win. current polls showing he leads in new hampshire with 57%, over clinton' s 34%. from the live alert desk, i' m miriah turner. lisa: as for the republicans, ted cruz came out on top. the republican side also lost a candidate last night.

last week, rankin pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal abuse for children under 12. her attorney told us she took an alford plea deal, meaning she admitted there was damaging evidence but not that she committed a crime. the mother of one of the alleged victims told us her daughter was just 4 months old when she first noticed bruising, then twitching. and shortly after, doctors at children' s hospital determined her injuries weren' t accidental. this morning, desiree rankin will face a judge for sentencing. she could face three months behind bars or house arrest. at the same time, the mother of one of the victims is pushing for sophie' s law, a mandatory registry for convicted child abusers. dan griffin, wlwt news 5. mark: thank you. local fallout to a world health emergency. a strong travel warning from cincinnati' s health department tied to the rapidly spreading zika virus. wlwt news 5' s emily wood tells us about the advisory that will likely change many spring breaks

emily: the health department is taking action to get the word out locally. whether it' s spring break or a summer vacation, many trips to south america and the caribbean may have to be rescheduled, thanks to the mosquito-born virus zika. there is growing evidence the virus is causing severe birth defects among babies born to mothers who were infected during pregnancy. >> the main thing, don' t put yourself at risk. don' t put your baby at risk. and if you are pregnant, absolutely do not go. emily: dr. o' dell owens says there are two ways to contract the virus. direct contact by an infected mosquito in one of the 21 countries in mexico, south america and the caribbean. or local transmission from someone in the south traveling back from the infected region. >> we don' t have it in ohio but it is in places like georgia, where a person can come back to georgia, get bit by one of those mosquitos, and then bite someone

to get pregnant. emily: according to the cdc, only one in five people infected with the virus will get sick. and even though the early symptoms are hard to detect, there are things to look for if you are unsure. >> for local people here in this area who think maybe they may have the symptoms, which is usually a fever, a rash, pain in the joints, ocassionally a pink eye, they can go to their doctor and we can arrange for a blood test to be sent to the cdc to see if you' ve been affected. emilly: right now no locally reported cases have been reported in the u.s. emily wood, news 5. mark: zika has been an issue for nearly a year now, starting last may in brazil. if not for this apparent link between zika and birth defects, there would be no emergency.
