s wlwt, leading the way, this is wlwt news 5 today. mark: cincinnati road crews are staying busy this morning clearing the way for the morning commute. the city says there are about 70 trucks on the roads, and crews are focusing on primary routes to help with the morning commute. lisa: cincinnati public service crews just tweeted this reminder to drivers to be careful this morning. the tweet reads, main roads are passable but slick most side good morning, i' mark: and i' we' ll have team coverage on the let' s get a check on the forecast with meteorologist randi rico. randi: good morning. we are starting out with a winter weather in effect. the focus, as we have said, the snowy side streets will be the issue. the main roads look ok. later on today, we warm up above freezing.

heading into the evening hours. this morning, winter weather advisory through 10:00 a.m. as we look at the radar, you will see most places right now just plain old cloudy. we picking up on a couple of flurries here and there and a little catchy, freezing drizzle. that could cause an additional slick spot this morning. generally, the road crews did a great job of playing this primary roads and highways overnight. looking at the wide view, snow lifting to the north. looking to the south, you can see rain showers starting to slowly push their way into southern kentucky. we are expecting cold rain into the evening hours. right now, temperatures generally in the mid-20' s, about 25 degrees. watch out for slick roads snow-covered areas. lunchtime, cloudy, about 36 and 37 for the high in the afternoon . 6:00 p.m., rain showers creep to the southeastern communities.

we will see rain predominately through midnight than maybe another mix with slushy a chelation possible. we are not done with the snow, even though we are talking warm up. we will take a look at that in a couple of minutes. first, we have to get you out the door and safely to work. kyla: we have been mentioning sidestreets is where you' re going to see the greatest potential for the extra time you will need an still snow and ice coverage. here is a live shot in mount auburn. you can see this is on the side thoroughfares to the neighborhood. once you get onto the main streets, you should be a much better shape and are interstate travel has been good so far. 71-75 near the split in northern kentucky through walton. the 275 loop and further into northern downtown cincinnati, clear road conditions. same thing from the indiana

starting to pick up eastbound and westbound as well. even with a holiday, we will probably see lighter volume of traffic throughout the morning and i think that will help us out as well. we will check again in a few minutes. no andrew setters is also keeping an eye on the roads in live drive 5. andrew what are you seeing? ,andrew: we' re on beachfront avenue in the anderson township area headed outbound toward 275. right now, this is in fantastic shape. much of what we' ve seen on more of the more traveled roads has been there in very good shape. road crews have had a chance overnight to get out on the streets, throw outs old, plow the roads and make sure things are especially possible for you this morning. one of the things that you will notice or that we have noticed as we have made our way around, a lot of those private contractors getting out and

and sidewalks getting from the parking lot to the front door may be difficult to get through if they' ve not had a chance to clear the sidewalks and parking lots. take your time. much lighter traffic and you would normally see because it is presidents' day today. road conditions not all that bad of shape. margo thank you. road crews still have some work to do in some areas. lisa: dan griffin is live in mount auburn with a look at the conditions on side streets. it is pretty snowy, dan. dan: it is really snowy. i can tell you, the sidestreets are, this is ringgold, still very much kind of messy. if you' re trying to drive along here, you' ll have some issues getting some traction. area, though. i believe we have some of those contractors that andrew was talking about getting to work in

we were trying to grab bits of video from different neighborhoods. i know we were in the dorchester avenue area, central parkway at one point. cars were covered, roads were covered. that is what road crews have been up against all night long, trying to clear this primary routes to make sure they are clear. in the meantime, as many of us head out the door, coming out to our cars and sidestreets covered in snow. road crews are saying, one thing you can do to make it easier when they finally get to these areas, make sure your car is not part on the street if you have offstreet parking. leave some room so they can start scraping , salting, making sure they can get a clear. sidewalks are also something to think about. dan griffin, wlwt lisa: thank you. the snow on sunday created problems in some areas. miriah turner is at the live alert desk with a look at the impact across greater cincinnati. miriah: if anybody had to go out

stole a brand new car from the woody sandy ford dealership and then lost control, crashing into a pole in the 5500 block of sidney. the car then burst into flames. the teens were able to get out and were quickly arrested. the road remains closed as crews clean up the scene and work to restore power to a couple of homes in the area. wlwt news 5 is leading the way on the winter weather, and you can download our wlwt app to get the updated forecast and get severe weather alerts. lisa: support is growing for the rebuilding effort in rabbit has -- rabbit ha sh after a fire destroyed a historical landmark. so far more than $30,000 has been raised to rebuild the rabbit hash general store. it was a damaged by a fire saturday night and the owners were only able to salvage a few items. the general store has been an important part of the community for decades.

years and it' s just gone now. lisa: the cause of the fire is still under investigation. the gofundme page for the store has a goal of $250,000. mark: since today is president' s day the city is delaying trash , collection this week. city employees have the day off so trash, recycling, and yard waste collection will be delayed by one day. another partisan fight on capitol hill. lisa: the battle brewing following the death of justice antonin scalia. mark: stuck in the snow. what we' re learning about this mess on the highway just to the west. lisa: looking live outside, hope it is a great start for you. 25 degrees. not too bad in the chapter department. we' ve seen worse a last few days. randi: that just look nasty. the breeze blowing some of the snow off the roof, alsomist or

issues, no significant delays to report so far. 75 at mitchell, northbound and southbound rolling right along. speeds anywhere between 55 and 65 miles per hour, and that is really, really good when you' re considering the amount of snowfall we saw yesterday and most parts of greater cincinnati. 275 at route 4, northern edge of the loop, a bit of heavier volume. i think it will still be lighter than what we with the on the nonholiday. a lot of schools out today, folks off work. 71 and fight for getting have your southbound as you hop inside of the 275 loop. another look at road conditions, wlwt andrew setters is in live drive with a look at what you might see as you head out. andrew: kyla, we on to 75 and we are headed north round -- 275 and we' re headed northbound. it' s an great shape. we' re seeing less traffic on the

normally see on a monday around 6:15 in the morning. i think a fair number of people have the day off because of the presidents' day holiday, so that helps out. a couple of other things doubt out, the timing of the snowstorm -- things to help out, the timing of the snowstorm day road crews a lot of time to attack the road conditions overnight and do the best they can to get them in good shape or everybody this morning. sometimes, that makes all the difference in the world, the timing. if you imagine the snow that open up on us yesterday afternoon sitting around this time in the morning, road conditions would be absolutely abysmal this morning. instead, you' re finding them in pretty good shape because they had about 12 hours to get out and do their work. andrew setters, wlwt news 5. lisa: now a quick check on some top stories before we continue our winter weather coverage. mark: and now a bitter battle is brewing over when to replace the late supreme court justice antonin scalia.

promising to nominate someone quickly. the president says that person deserves a fair hearing and a timely vote in the senate. mitch mcconnell says the president should wait and leave the decision in the hands of the voters in the winner of the race for the white house. lisa: pope francis speaking out against the drug trade and violence during his trip to mexico. this is video from sunday when he celebrated mass for hundreds of thousands in a crime-ridden suburb of mexico city. pope francis also blessed dozens of sick children at a pediatric hospital. mark: los angeles is preparing for the 58th annual grammy awards at the staples center. crews were out this weekend putting on the final touches before the celebrities hit the s show. l.l. cool j will host the awards s day was a good day to stay inside after snow and bitter cold gripped much of the country. lisa: record low temperatures in the northeast and plenty of snow grant turner has look at the wave -- miriah turner is it a look at the wave of winter

mark: miriah: we had snow. s day in indiana and the weather was the cause of huge pileup highway near indianapolis. between 40 and 50 cars were involved in at least 12 people were taken to hospitals with injuries. meanwhile, the coldest valentine' s day on record in the northeast. this is video from boston. steam was seen coming off the water. the fog forms when the especially cold air moves over the relatively warmer waters. also strong winds that create a brutal wind chills. we are asking you to send in your photos of the snow. rand i has a detailed look at your forecast. randi: the good news, we are finally warming things up. however, a very cold rain and we'

forest as far as the snow goes. the snow was over from yesterday evening, but remember, the sidestreets are still coated. we have the potential for freezing drizzle. that could cause a couple of extra slick spots. late today, how about some rain? cold enough for cold rain, but warm enough at least it will be rain is a rolls in. after midnight, could see some mixing with rain and sleet, freezing rain all possible later on tonight. looking at the radar over the last couple of hours, starting to see the chance for a couple of flurries developing. generally, it has been a murky look outside. looking well to the south, nashville this morning waking up to a cold rain. you can see mixing toward london, kentucky. this line of rain is lifting north, bringing slightly milder temperatures but just warm enough it will be mainly rain this evening. we still have the winter weather advisory in effect for our area through 10:00 a.m..

sidestreets you still have problems with the potential of freezing drizzle is a little heavier in spots, maybe a couple of slick spots through the morning. most places still in the mid-20' s. 24, springboro. 28, falmouth. we should go above freezing between 9:00 and 11:00 and for most of us and then this afternoon into the mid and upper 30' s. as we look at 5:00, 36 degrees downtown, almost to 40 to the southeast communities. down to the southeast, that is worthy rain rolls in first. your presidents' day forecast, whether you' re hitting the malls for deals were hitting this lets us afternoon, at noon, but freezing, 36. 4:00, chile, 37. 8:00 tonight, cold rain on the way toward downtown. futurecast trying to throw a couple of flurries our way but generally freezing drizzle reported. lunchtime, above freezing.

for the evening commute, rain showers start to creep into the extreme southeastern communities. for the evening drive, from hillsboro to georgetown to brooksville, basically extreme southeastern towns has the potential for rain. closer to 8:00 to 9:00 p.m., you' ll see this line move back toward downtown cincinnati and everyone dealing with rain showers overnight for about midnight. early morning hours, look what happens, a bit of a mix, some rain mixing with freezing rain, maybe some snow, slushy cumulation is a possibility in this area to the southeast of the 71 corridor. tomorrow morning, it moves out as light snow showers. so the potential for tricky travel. some accounts may have another day of school delay in the morning. tomorrow afternoon, once again, we back up to the upper 30' s. tuesday evening, not quite done yet, another shot of snow possible tomorrow in the evening

half inch to inch before moving out before midnight tuesday night into wednesday. then we can finally focus on nothing but warmer temperatures. today, 37 degrees, slick early and then late in the day, watching that rain rolls through. tonight, a mix, so watch out for icy spots and slushy jubilation overnight. 30 degrees for the low. tomorrow, the next early, another final shot of snow tuesday night and early wednesday. then we can talk about the warm up. it is a nice wood by the end of the week, almost 60 degrees by friday and keeping it in the 50' s for the weekend. lisa: forced to turn back. how someone on the ground disrupted a transatlantic flight. mark: another tool in the heroin epidemic, the change and local over store serving today. kyla: if you' re wondering what those road conditions are looking like, we have a covered for you.

re seeing pretty good conditions. hopefully, we will continue to see that. we have lighter volume of traffic with it being a holiday and a lot of schools out, folks off work. 56 miles per hour from the 275 interchange onto 471 and parts of fort thomas in newport, bellevue, dayton, looking good, six minutes over to the daniel carter beard bridge were you will find those pretty clear conditions. here' s a look at some of those ramps in the downtown. that is where you will see the dicey areas with more snow and ice potential to run into, your neighborhoods as well, though sidestreets. dan griffin and andrew have been on them this morning. that is where he will need the extra time. what to get on the interstate and main thoroughfares, you should be ready good to go. no major issues this morning. mark: new this morning, a pilot decides to turn around heading to new york after taking off from london. this was a virgin atlantic flight and the airline says someone pointed a laser at the

after it happened, the first officer started to feel sick so the pilots decided to head back to london. there were about 250 passengers on the plane and the airline provided them a place stay. lisa: happening today, kroger is joining other retailers in the growing fight against heroin by offering narcan over-the-counter. kroger says it worked for months on a physician-approved protocol , including a detailed checklist to make sure patients and family members are prepared to use narcan. kroger will offer narcan as an inhaler or a shot across cincinnati and northern kentucky. mark: also today, uc' s office of safety and reform is a hosting a community forum. they will introduce the will perform a comprehensive review of the uc police department. involved shooting death of sam dubose. the forum is at 6:30 at the community action agency. please is here with details

this know we saw yesterday for sure, and coalton bidders. randi: it has been called for a week or so. i' m ready for warm up. yesterday officially a cvg, 2.9 inches of snow. when you toss that in the total for the season, this is the first day where we have above normal snowfall for the season. we have been running a deficit all season long. yesterday pushed us over the edge. 2.9 inches at cvg. other spots saw more than that. maysville, 4.5 inches. oh and 10, near four inches. in ohio, the big winner looks to be a million. wilmington, 2.3 inches. we' re not totally done with snow showers. today, temperatures and the upper 30' s. rain this evening. we will have a mix overnight and maybe slushy accumulation. another shot of snow late tuesday evening through about midnight. then we can finally relax, take a breather, and enjoy 50' s into

quickly, but they were quickly arrested. crews are clearing the scene and working to restore power to a couple of homes in the area. we have team coverage with the latest conditions as yet out this morning. lisa: first, let' s check the forecast with randi rico. randi: the road crews had a long night clearing those roads out, the snow ended, the heavy accumulating snow between 8:00 and 11:00 p.m.. snow showers lifting north of northern ohio. we shift to the south and you can see nashville this morning, a very cold rain. that rain working in our direction. i this evening, amazingly, we will be warm enough to see some rain. winter weather advisory still in effect through 10:00 this morning. this morning, snowy sidestreets and later today, that rain chance rolls in. taking a look at the radar, potential for maybe a couple of flurries through central portions of warren county. generally, the only thing i' ve

freezing drizzle near cvg. that could create some slick spots on the roads. rain on the way later today and a push of slightly milder air. in the morning drive, snow-covered sidestreets are your main concern. lunchtime, above freezing for what seems like the first time in at least a week. 37 this afternoon. in the evening drive, rain showers to the southern communities over spreading downtown by about 8:00 or 9:00. after midnight, rain mixing with snow, maybe slushy accumulation, potential for freezing rain. it will be a bit of a mixed bag late night and early tomorrow morning, which means there may be a couple of delays tomorrow morning to talk about other another shot of snow tuesday evening. we' re not totally done with snow but at least we are focused several days. we still have to get through snow-covered roads this morning. kyla:

any problems this morning is in the neighborhoods. into as you make your way to the interstates. ve been rolling right along. heading from northern kentucky in the downtown cincinnati, 71-70 five looking good on the brent spence bridge heading into cincinnati and further south, in parts of northern kentucky, still rolling along as well. elsewhere across greater cincinnati, clear conditions but you can see traffic is starting are heading. if you' re making her way out of warren county this morning, southbound lanes are getting heavy. not seeing a whole lot of brake lights or string of vehicles in any stopped traffic. interstate travel has been off to a pretty decent start. we have team coverage for your of the winter road conditions. i mention the sidestreets. we want to check in with dan griffin who is live in mount auburn. we'

on the sidestreets. dan: i think all of us coming in this morning were driving along ringgold. this is what we were up against. i was chatting with mark on twitter. i had to punch the gas of the bottom of the hill to get momentum to make it up the hill. some of you who have to head out this morning may have to do the same thing to get up and down some of these hills. well, not to get down, but to get up the hills because you may have trouble getting traction. we have seen some people coming into some of the private lives in this area just scraping and plowing things of that nature. some of that work was underway overnight. cars were covered in snow, sidestreets covered in snow and parking lots, too. there is still a lot of work to be done. the sidestreets are still going to be a bit dicey as yet out the door. road crews have about 65 or 70 truck' s doing what they can to get those primary routes taken care of. sidestreets will be the next big hurdle.

the street, cincinnati road crews are asking you get those off the street. so they can clear them and make sure everybody has a safe route to get wherever they need to go. arco thank you. continue in our team coverage this morning, let' s head over to andrew setters. lisa: he is in live drive 58 with a closer look. bring us up-to-date. where are you now? andrew: we are in a subdivision. it still has a lot of snow on the roads. no problems getting around in it, just a flat area back here where you have some homes. i imagine as people get up and get moving this morning, they will help break up some of this snow. looks like a lot of it was cleared away by road crews. this is the kind of stuff you will be dealing with a

a lot of the main roads, well-traveled roads, are in very good shape because road crews have had a chance to get out and really work on it overnight because when the snow stopped, it just kind of stopped. they gave crews a chance to play catch-up during the overnight hours and do the best they can to get things in the best shape possible for the morning drive. lisa: thank you. cincinnati road crews have it working around-the-clock the clock trying to clear roads. mark: miriah turner has a look at how the city is handling the snow. miriah: cincinnati road crews have to cover more than 3000 miles when we get stowe events and the city says there are about 70 truck' s on the roads and chris are focusing primarily on routes that help with the morning commute. the warmer temperatures will help as crews clear the roads and throw salt down for step in the area, road crews are making progress. snow emergencies have been lifted in several communities,

mark: good morning and welcome back. we have a live look at citycam as you see volume starting to pick up on the roads this morning, even though it is the presidents' day holiday, we still have folks trying to make their way to work. we have team coverage for you as we begin with snow. lisa: let' s get a check on the commute. kyla: we have a look at the big picture for you get ready to head outside, we are seeing the heavier volume. 74 getting ready to merge with the 75 interchange, slowing down

heading toward 75. to be honest, we' ve seen great interstate condition so far. we' ve not had any issues, just starting to see that heavy volume. coming out of butler county, 75 looks good northbound and southbound. does getting larger numbers as folks heading out for work or possibly school. we want to get a check on the sidestreets. dan griffin has been keeping an eye on them. i think that is where you have the greater potential to need the extra time. how are things looking where you are? dan: things are looking ok, i guess. the streets are very much messy. not been many -- not very many cars. i don' t think we will see as many because it is presidents' day. it is a bit dicey, still snow covered. it does not look like plow seven by because cincinnati road crews have really been focused on making sure the primary routes are taking care of, the main routes that everybody is going

streets things of that nature. as far as the sidestreets, still very, very messy. i' m sure that will be the case until the road crews can get up here and start didn' t just getting this taken care of. mark: as we have been sing, many residential streets are still untouched. this is what it looked like as the snow was coming down in green township. this is video from colerain township on 275, a couple of drivers without the road sunday by the colerain avenue exit. the interstate was covered in snow. lisa: the snow on sunday created problems for some and fun times outdoor for others. mark: miriah turner joins us now with a look at some moments and fun photos you' re sharing with us online. miriah: i was thinking about all of the people who had dayton that on valentine' s day. some people ran into a few snags as we just saw. the conditions were not the best for drivers on sunday, so many

vicki hampton jenkins shared this photo of her jenna busy making a snow angel in leesburg, ohio. of course, lots of kids enjoying a snow day today. meanwhile, out in independence, kentucky, jen thieman jackson shared her version of a snow cone. her furry family member outside in what she measured as 4 inches. that looks just miserable. poor puppy. as you get out the door this morning remember you can always pictures. heading our way. then we are looking at warmer m thinking about are my dogs in the yard with mud. randi: and that is what we' re friday. rain, it will be nice and sloppy. currently, fresh powder will be the lawn later in the week. finally warming things up. the sidestreets early. even a little patchy freezing drizzle has been reported.
