wlwt news five. lisa: kentucky' s governor is in northern kentucky this morning. and one of the issues he' ll likely address is budget cuts that could lead to higher college tuition. mark: wlwt news 5' s andrew setters is leading the way in florence with the growing concerns. andrew? andrew governor matt bevin will : be here at gateway community college later this morning. and this visit comes as he' s being criticized by state college leaders for his proposed budget. governor bevin is trying to balance a budget that has a $30 billion shortfall in state pension programs. to plug that hole, he is cutting the budget. but the state' s community college system president says the budget cuts would fall on the backs of their mostly part time students. it could force community colleges to ask for an 8% tuition increase. bevin spoke to a group of community college presidents just yesterday, saying the cuts have to come from somewhere. >> we are helping our students to achieve their dreams, but now

the eyewitness video initially show' s the 37-year-old complying. he gets to his knees, hands are visible officers have their guns , drawn. the deadly turn comes when gaston does not lie flat as commanded. he raises up and his right hand reaches into his waistband. what police say he reached for was an airsoft pellet gun that looked realistic. three officers fired 9 shots. mayor john cranley commented on the incident defending cincinnati police officers. >> don' t go for a gun against a cop. you will be shot. and our officers have a really tough job and we need to stand with them when they make tough decisions. lisa: those three officers who fired their guns are from district three. miriah: and are now on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete. from the live alert desk i' m miriah turner. lisa: a man is wanted this morning for stealing credit card information and using it to make several transactions. police in delhi are looking for this man. they say he cloned a delhi township person' s card and went

grocery stores. if you know who this is. call crimestoppers at 513-352-3040. gone is 60 seconds. surveillance video captures a bike store break in. that bike store is the harley-davidson just north of dayton in vandalia ohio. and that costly crime. took less than a minute to complete. two men fill two trash cans worth of leather goods. their haul is nearly 10 grand in merchandise. police hope the michigan sweatshirt may give one of the suspects away. they also have a picture of the getaway truck. mark: new sanctions for north korea are now law. president barack obama signed off on the new sanctions thursday. congress overwhelmingly passed the measure earlier this month. the sanctions are punishment for kim jong-un' s regime after launching several nuclear and missile tests, as well as suspected cyber attacks. the measures freeze the assets of anyone doing business related to north korea' s nuclear or

or anyone suspected of being involved in the abuse of human rights in north korea. lisa: 5:06 right now presidential candidates in both , parties held dueling events last night, all hoping to convince voters before the weekend' s primaries. the trio made a number of stand-out comments. jeb bush says he would probably nominate someone to the supreme court if he were in president barack obama' s position. governor john kasich said that he could consider appointing former rival chris christie. and donald trump softened his response to reports of pope francis saying trump is not christian if he favors using a wall to stem illegal border crossings. at the same time, hillary clinton and bernie sanders participated in a town hall in las vegas. both trying to win over minority voters and women. in the new poll clinton leads sanders among minorities women primary voters ages 50 and older , and self-identified democrats. , but sanders holds the edge among white men independents and

rescue the 5 people on board. first responders rushed to the scene and transported the pilot and 4 passengers to hospitals. no word yet on what caused the crash landing. mark: justice antonin scalia' s body will lie in repose today in the great hall of the supreme court building. a private ceremony will be held before the public is invited to pay their respects. this honor was last given to chief justice william rehnquist in 2005. the funeral is expected to be held tomorrow. today is the deadline for drone owners to register with the faa. lisa: the rule was announced last year before an estimated 1 million drones were sold for the holidays. wlwt news 5' s miriah turner tells us more about what this deadline means. miriah: only 300,000 registered in the first month since the rule took effect, but after today, unregistered drone owners could face serious consequences. it' s a simple online process . users pay five dollars for a three-year registration with the faa and they'

the faa also has an app called before you fly. that shows the flying rules wherever you are. even small drones can pose potential problems so the faa hopes education will help reduce collisions with other aircraft, as well as property damage and injury. even if you' re just flying drones for fun not registering could mean consequences that are not-so-fun. along with the weight parameters for the drones the registration is for drones purchased before december 21 of last year. if you got one after that date say, for christmas you' re supposed to have registered before that drone takes to the you can do all of this online at faa.gov. lisa: the climb of a lifetime for a local firefighter. it' s training that could save others. in case you missed it that was one of our top stories last night at 11:00. union township firefighter jessica moening. put on her full gear last night to climb the steps at good samaritan hospital. she' s finishing up her training. before sunday' s fight for air

lisa: dan griffin has more on the investigation. dan: good morning. it was here along verity parkway in middletown where investigators responded to a woman hit by a semi this morning. a scary scene. it was about 2:00 this morning. fire crews confirming she was airlifted after the accident. there is no word on specific injuries at this point and not their what led up to the crash. we are told the semi driver is ok at this point. the woman' s condition is still re still working to get more information about how this happened and how she is doing. for now we are live in news. lisa: 71 southbound is moving again after crews cleared the scene of this crash overnight police say southbounds lanes were closed for about an hour near the red bank road exit because of a crash involving two drivers. no one was hurt and the lanes opened up just before 1:00 this

mark: cincinnati police now saying the man killed by officers wednesday in cheviot was shot after reaching into his waistband for what looked like a real gun. we now know it was a pellet gun. the incident was captured on cell phone video. paul gaston was shot nine times by three police officers and died from his injuries. one person is now questioning the officers' decision to shoot . that is gaston' s girlfriend. she tells us she doesn' t believe he needed to die that night. the girlfriend said she called 911 after gaston hit her daughter with the pellet gun. but when police got to her home, gaston had already taken off. the girlfriend wanted her identity protected, so we' re not showing her face and we' ve distorted her voice. >> he had been drinking and he just had an accident. i' m not trying to justify him not listening, but i' m pretty sure that played a major role in it. mark: the three officers who fired their guns are from district three. they are on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete. mark: viciously attacked in

a brown county couple is recovering after breaking up a dog fight. the dog warden was called out to a home on new harmony salem road in mount orab thursday afternoon. he says it' s unclear what started the fight between the dogs, but the woman and man were hurt trying to pull them apart. the dogs are both terrier mixes a 5-year-old male and a 2 to , 3-year-old female. the dog warden says the female is new to the family. >> they didn' t seem like they were vicious dogs when they were outside at all, but i don' t know, you don' t know what happens inside. lisa: both victims were taken uc medical center and are expected to survive. the female dog was taken to the county' s shelter. mark: proposed budget cuts in kentucky could result in some college students paying more for tuition. governor matt bevin will be in northern kentucky today talking about the issue that has several college presidents frustrated. andrew setters is in florence with the story.

andrew: governor matt bevin is coming at a gateway community college at a time when he was to cut funding for colleges, needs tuition rates could increase for students or their options for classes could be cut back. all of this is playing out as the governor prepares for his trip later this morning. his proposed budget has been met with strong opposition from leaders of the kentucky community college system is that cuts for colleges would mean higher tuition for students or fewer options for schools as they try to make up the financial difference will stop the governor is coming to gateway community college just after he took on the issue head on talking to a group of community college leaders. >> these cuts are draconian. they will affect every part of our university. >> i would love to be the governor who stands here before you and says simply, hey, everybody gets what they want and then some on top of that. who wouldn' t want to be that governor? that would be fantastic. it would be fun, make my job a whole lot more interesting. but guess what? it' s not reality.

for more investment in advanced manufacturing jobs in kentucky come and he happens to be visiting the advanced manufacturing center here at gateway community college later today. andrew setters, wlwt is sobbing. lisa: with nevada' s caucuses and south carolina' s primary just a day away, democratic candidates hillary clinton and bernie sanders took part in a town hall meeting last night in las vegas. sanders was the first candidate to take the stage, with clinton appearing later to answer questions from the moderator and members of the audience. both candidates are trying to win over minority voters and women. separately, that didn' t stop them from taking jabs at each >> we' secretary will say what she' ll >> i just don' t know where all maybe it' s because senator sanders wasn' t really a democrat until he decided to run for president. lisa: hillary clinton still leads senator bernie sanders by double digits nationally in a

53% of democratic primary voters back clinton, while 42% support senator sanders. mark: as for the republicans, three of the candidates took to the stage in south carolina last night for a second day of town hall meetings. wlwt news 5' s miriah turner is at the live alert desk with a recap of that event. miriah: ohio governor john kasich, former florida governor jeb bush, and donald trump all took questions from voters in columbia last night. all three discussed a gamut of issues, including the future of obamacare and how the u.s. should deal with the terror group isis. all three candidates also showed a softer side by talking about the importance of family. trump' s recent war of words with pope francis was also a hot topic last night. the controversy broke out earlier thursday when the pontiff told reporters that a person who thinks only about building walls and not bridges is not christian. though trump reacted swiftly at a rally earlier in the day, he softened his response at the town hall meeting.
