kyla: that has been the theme for today, enjoy today. right now things are looking pretty good. north and southbound is still pretty light as we get started. things will pick up as we get into the 6:00 hour. towards the airport, no delays on the roads. things are looking great near kentucky 212. a few cars in the eastbound direction at montana. we will continue to give you updated. mark: thank you. pellets fired into a crowd of students during an active shooter seminar at a local college. thursday night, students packed into a room on the wilmington college campus. as the wilmington police officer conducting the event began talking, two students walked into the room from opposite doors and started firing the airsoft guns into the crowd of

some students within close range of the guns received welts from the pellets. >> and then i felt it and i saw him and i' m, like, oh, he shot me and then they proceeded up the isle shooting. and after the end, the cop collected the guns and started asking, ok, who got shot? mark: wilmington college says it' s unfortunate this happened. a spokesman says the college relied on the officer' s judgment about how the training should be conducted. lisa: a jury trial begins today for the man at the center of a 20-hour swat standoff in latonia. 43-year-old michael vaughan faces attempted-murder charges after allegedly shooting at police back in december of 2013. he was shot in the arm before finally surrendering. vaughan is a military veteran who suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder. police say he held his three children inside that home for several hours. a 7-month old boy is in critical condition this morning after he

on 275 monday. wlwt news 5' s miriah turner has the latest on the wreck that killed the driver and backed up rush hour for hours. miriah: fort thomas police say both speed and drugs could be factors. needles were found inside the car, and the driver who died had track marks on his arm. this all happened around 2:30 monday afternoon on 275 east of the 471 exit. police say a four-door sedan somehow drove off the right side of the road and rolled several times, ejecting three of the four people inside. the 7-month-old boy was thrown out of his car seat and, according to a witness, flew 30 feet in the air before landing on the ground. a woman in the back seat with the baby is currently in critical condition at uc medical center. the front-seat passenger, a man, was the only one who remained in the car. he was talking and alert at the scene in stable condition. police say it is unclear if any of the adults were wearing seat

at this point, no names have been released, or the relationships between the driver m miriah turner. mark: thank you. new information about a crash between a school bus and suv that killed a woman. it happened just outside mowrystown in highland county monday morning. police say the bus was stopped to pick up kids when it was rear-ended by the suv. the driver of that suv, 54-year-old helen dean, died. police say she was not wearing a seat belt. we didn' t hear any kind of screech of brakes. we just heard the collision. mark: state highway patrol says their initial findings also conclude the driver didn' t brake and that the suv didn' t have its headlights on. five students were taken to the hospital to get checked out, but they' re expected to be ok. lisa: the community support to

this morning. mark: andrew setters is live at the store with the major donation set to take place today. good morning. lisa: the rabbit hash general store was insured for less than half the amount it' ll cost to replace it. so when it burned last week, the questions immediately started swirling about the future of the store. fire ripped through the building, which has stood on this spot for more than 175 years. they worked to save it, but there was little that could be done. the fire was devastating. the community has vowed to rebuild it and they' ll get some help today. duke energy will donate $25,000 to the rabbit hash historical society' s efforts to rebuild the general store. they plan to reconstruct it to resemble the original as closely as possible. we'

more details as soon as we reestablish our connection. the city has announced it is forming and independent team to look into allegations of how money was spent and asking the money to follow in order requiring the city to operate a sewer district under the counties direction. >> we have continually reached out the opportunity of discussion and mediation. not paid mediation but conversation between elected officials. and we' re elected and paid by the taxpayers to do a job. and it seems to me that we ought to give that a try. but instead the county chose to go to court. lisa: earlier this month, the state auditor launched its own investigation into the msd after concerns of competitive bidding, contracts, and payments.

s headlines. republican presidential candidates are vying for votes in the nevada caucus today. marco rubio spoke to a crowd in minden yesterday, while ted cruz spoke in elko. a last-minute push for support, donald trump flew from an event in atlanta to hit a rally last night in las vegas. trump is expected to win the state, but second place is still what everybody is vying for. lisa: apple' s supporters are planning a protest against the fbi that will actually happen tomorrow. supporters are expected to demonstrate in 50 different apple stores across the u.s. at 5:00 p.m. local time. causing the discord, a judge ordered apple to assist in the san bernadino terrorism investigation by helping the fbi hack into shooter syed farook' s locked iphone. so far, apple has resisted. victims and affected families are also expected to take action through their attorney tomorrow, -- today filing a brief of , support for the department of justice. mark: alleged michigan shooter jason dalton is charged with six counts of murder and denied bail

the prosecutor says dalton admitted his involvement in the incident. police believe dalton shot eight people at an apartment complex, restaurant, and car dealership in kalamazoo saturday night. so far, no motive has been determined, and officials have not found a connection between dalton and the victims. if convicted, dalton could be sentenced to life in prison. cincinnati police hacked by a secret group. officers don' t want to give the group called anonymous more publicity or credibility. lisa: but the hacking of personal information has triggered a serious cyber investigation. wlwt news 5' s miriah turner tells us more. good morning. miriah: cincinnati police are taking extra caution this morning. police have launched a cyber investigation to try and figure out if the anonymous attack was local or imported. the group called a recent police shooting a murder. and they released more than 50 officers' personal information in response. we' re told officers are increasing their sense of awareness in light of the hacking, and that they recognize the intent is to rile them up

>> we' re seeing our officers in uniform and out of uniform across the country being targeted. so this is very, very serious. we' re taking it very serious and we want to make sure our officers are safe. miriah: the links to the site were taken down monday morning after being up for part of the weekend. coming up next week, the city of cincinnati will review its overall online security. mike: a family pet abused and left for dead. and now volunteers with the group joseph' s legacy are caring for a cat named ava and her five kittens. in case you missed it, it was a story new for you last night at 11:00. the 2-year-old was found with a spinal injury and broken tail. the woman caring for ava thinks she was swung by her tail and tossed outside, severely injuring her. >> the act of injuring her and just allowing her to suffer and the five babies to suffer, without being fed because it was , our understanding she was outside and the babies were inside. mike: right now, ava is only using her front legs.

lisa: good morning and welcome back. not a bad start. we have nice sunshine ahead. selfies have become part of everyday life. we even take them here in the studio. some are better taking them then others. i do not do either. mark: but now mastercard wants to use selfies to help prevent fraud. kyla: great usage of the tool. and they' re saying the new program will make your accounts more secure than ever. the company says selfies and fingerprint scans are safer than typed passwords. especially since many of our passwords are easy for scammers to guess. and if you want to use your pic to pay, download the mastercard identity check app. it has you take a selfie each time you buy something online. your face or fingerprint will be scanned to prove it' s you spending the money and not a scammer. but you won' t be able to use the same picture over and over. mastercard makes you blink to show that you are taking that

pretty complicated. the fingerprint scan is a little easier. especially if you have a new iphone with the technology already built in. mastercard is also researching ways to use your heartbeat and scans of your eyes to authenticate purchases. this could be the future of protecting online shoppers from fraud. it is a little bit of work. pretty complicated but maybe it is worth it. mark: put the camera on the cash register. i do not knkow. i' m just throwing ideas out there. lisa: they are the ones using my credit card. that' s a 40% increase from the previous minimum of $35. it' s not clear when amazon made the change. as for amazon prime memberships, which cost $99 a year, they will . lisa: starbucks is changing the way customers earn loyalty rewards. currently starbucks customers earn one star per purchase, and may redeem 12 stars for a free food and drink item. under the new program, which starts in mid april, customers will get two stars for every $1 spent, and need 125 stars to get a free item. some say the change could spark complaints from customers who are used to accumulating points with frequent purchases of drip coffee and other lower-cost items. mark: never seen starbucks without a line. lisa: that' s because it awakens

mark: ohio lawmakers will vote today on a proposal that would make the so-called sales tax holiday an annual occurrence. this started last fall. parents had three days to take care of back-to-school shopping, and most purchases did not have sales tax. this morning, a senate committee will vote on legislation to make the tax holiday permanent. if it passes, it could go before the full senate this afternoon. lisa: back to your forecast on this tuesday. looking forward to more sunshine today. randi: one more day to get out and enjoy it. if you have been out along the rivers, they have been running high thanks to the heavy rain on saturday night. right now no flooding is currently happening. i' m keeping my eye on the ohio river. expect it to go over 40 feet this morning and then crest thursday morning.

randi: it is all good. we are going to have a lot of weather and traffic together the next couple of days. as we look at the radar, we have clear skies to start out the morning. some clouds lingering across the extreme southeastern communities. to the day, they will slowly creep toward cincinnati and we will eventually get the rain rolling in by about midnight tonight. signature wise, it plays out a whole lot like yesterday. in the morning, you will want a jacket because temperatures are generally in the 30' s. 30 in springboro and harrison. 33 for downtown. in the morning, clear, cool, 48. lunchtime, 45. 4:00, the hint of early spring. expect highs in the low to mid 50' s this afternoon. everything changes by about midnight as the rain starts to roll on in. we will look at the forecast for rain and snow over the next three days coming up in a couple of minutes. first, let' s check the roads.

it sounds like this by be the last one for a couple of days. starting out in northern kentucky, 71-75, this is what you will see from u.s. 42 and beyond. northbound up toward the 275 interchange and inside the loop, you' re good to go. same thing in butler county, 75 picking up a little bit. if you break light at union center as you continue southbound toward the 275 loop on the ohio side. 71 and dana looks good looking northbound and southbound. don' t need a lot of extra time heading out just yet. we will check again on construction you may bump into later tonight, so we will check that as well. lisa: thank you. a mother is getting more closure after her son was shot and killed. mark: and now police have connected a rap group to his death and other crimes. wlwt news 5' s dan griffin is live with the latest on the

dan: investigators say they may be known as entertainers, but members of rap group fdd are really dangerous criminals. cincinnati police say a drug bust friday. only wlwt was allowed to see their stash of cash, weed and cell phones. cincinnati police say a traffic stop led to a search warrant where they found 152 pounds of weed worth more than $150,000. they also found nearly the same amount in cash and three guns. police tell us this group is responsible for a series of violent crimes in the west end from may through november, including shootings and murder. police say a half-dozen arrests are just the start. they expect more arrests and charges soon. live, dan griffin, wlwt news 5. lisa: thank you. send it -- cincinnati police have wrapped up their efforts to hear your idea about reducing violence. the final public forum with the new police chief took place last night in college chill.

one girl said she felt uncomfortable using school resources, but she liked finding out what the city had to offer. >> we' re showing people what cincinnati has to offer. we' re not just bad kids running around doing bad things. like, i want to show more adults and more people, it' s more offered than us just out here, going to games, doing stuff like that. lisa: district five did see an increase in shootings from 2014 to 2015. last year district five had 79 , of the city' s 492 shootings. as for property crime, district five had 893 cases in 2015. that was down by more than 100 incidents from 2014. mark: a major step for today in restoring the historic rabbit hash general store after fire destroyed it. andrew setters breaks down who is writing a hefty check as

andrew: we are not the only ones up early working this morning, we have the garbage man here picking up the dumpster in front of the rabbit hash general store, making it noisy. the general store may very well rise again here in rabbit hash, destroyed by flames after standing here for about 185 years. the big donation is rolling in today. the fire on february 13 ripped through the building. little was done -- could be done to save it despite best efforts by the fire department. it is a major landmark in the community since andrew jackson was president. people here are committed to the general store survival already tens of thousands of dollars have been donated doubt bring back the general store. today, duke energy will give it a big push with a $25,000 donation. it will be rebuilt to look at the original with the help of an architect that specializes in the store buildings. andrew setters, wlwt

donald trump expecting another win and the next battle for the gop nomination at today' s caucus in nevada. two of his rivals had some missteps. miriah turner is at the level or desk with more. miriah: donald trump may just laugh his way to a win in nevada, especially after a gaffe from john kasich and a campaign misstep from ted cruz. ted cruz has asked for his current communications director rick tyler to resign. it comes after tyler tweeted out a news story that falsely depicted rival marco rubio dismissing the bible. the story was not true, and the tweet was deleted. rubio' s campaign says cruz is spreading a culture of deceit in his own campaign. and the same day ohio governor john kasich made an eyebrow-raising remark about women. on the campaign trail in virginia, he talked about women coming out of the kitchen to support him. later in the day, kasich attempted to explain the comment, calling it off-the-cuff. >> everybody' s just got to

think you all know is i am not a scripted candidate. miriah: meanwhile, rubio' s campaign has secured commitments from at least four major bush donors, while other backers of the former florida governor are taking a wait-and-see approach. despite whoever wins today' s caucus, you can be sure all candidates are looking ahead to a week from today, super tuesday, when nearly 600 delegates are up for grabs. from the live alert desk, i' m miriah turner. lisa: thank you. on the democratic side, hillary clinton and bernie sanders are gearing up for south carolina' s primary on saturday. clinton' s campaign believes her message is resonating with african-american voters in the state. she does have a lead over sanders in the polls after her win in nevada. mark: president obama has a plan to shut down guantanamo bay. white house officials will submit the outline to congress today. mr. obama has long-vowed to close the prison facility. he says it is used as a recruiting tool by terrorists and is too costly to maintain. congress had opposed previous plans to shut gitmo down.

randi: good morning. as the kids are heading out to the bus stop, we are going to start out with cool temperatures just like yesterday. on the way to school, about 34 degrees. a little bit chilly. by the afternoon, great weather to get outside. take a look at the forecast on the way home from school. get out and enjoy it, 52. changes are coming. i want to say hello to my new friend that mason intermediate school, i had a visit with the six graders last week. yes, most of them are taller than me. we did talk about snow days. anytime we talked about rain and snow in the forecast, people want to know. as of right now, it will be snowing on thursday morning. the temperatures may be a little bit warm thanks to the fact it is been warm for a couple of days, so slushy possible for the morning drive. by the afternoon, we could have one or two inches on the ground thursday.

council' s meeting is expected to be packed with them tonight. the market recently moved from downtown to an old bowling alley parking lot on the outskirts of town. city officials were concerned about traffic and parking. as a result, sales took a hit. at the last council meeting comes supporters exceeded maximum occupancy in city hall and they spilled into the lobby. they' re hoping to have a repeat showing tonight. mark: kentucky' s newest tourist attraction just months away from opening. now we have a closer look at the progress of the ark encounter. it is 510 feet long and some of the logs are 50 inches in diameter. to get an idea of how large the ark is, look at how small these semi-trailers are parked by the arc. the owners of this park is made possible by all its donors. >> it is a 100 million dollar project. that is basically about what we

it has been a great way to get rid of winter cabin fever. lisa: here is a way to wake up a , face full of fresh snow. the toronto zoo posted this adorable video of giant panda da mao last week. according to the zoo, he woke up to see the snow and got excited. the panda comes out of his cave and tumble down the snowy hill. he liked it so much he climbed up half-way and did it again. mark: that is so cool. it was quite a day for a 106-year-old woman who got to visit the white house. virginia mclaurin not only got to meet president obama and the first lady she got to dance with , them. in 2014, mclaurin began a social media campaign to meet the obamas. she explained in videos online that she was so happy to see a african-american person in the nation' s top job and she mentioned that to the president on sunday. she showed her excitement by boogeying down with the first couple.
