s wlwt , leading the way. this is wlwt news 5 today. mark: good morning, everyone. a live look outside for you on this super tuesday morning. just about 6:00 right now, 38 degrees. thank you for joining us, i am mark hayes. lisa: i am lisa cooney. we' re starting with a check on the forecast. rain first, then something else but rain first. randi: even the something else, the snow -- i said it -- it will melt when it hits the ground. you will see the snow but the ground stays plain old what. as we look at the radar, we have clear skies early this morning. the clouds will role in by midmorning and bivalve lunchtime, the rain that is moving through st. louis for the morning commute will be approaching cincinnati. 1:00 to 3:00 probably the main timeframe for heavy rain, maybe

rain will continue into the evening commute. you can see we' re not totally out of the was as far as the severe weather threat goes. the bulk of any severe weather threat remains well to the south. extremes other communities are under a slight risk today for storms that the potential for damaging wind. that is something we will track through the afternoon. the planner today, right now not a bad start, 37 degrees. at noon, the rain is rolling through southeastern indiana and crossing over to ohio. we should be around 51 degrees. those east of cincinnati, it will probably be maybe 2:00. you may hit the mid-50' s before through. afternoon. good have rain and thunder and lightning as getting home from work later this evening. after eight :00 tonight is will we change over to flakes of snow. i do not want to call it snow, i am calling it flakes. we will take a look at the

kyla: a great start to our tuesday morning commute. we are dry. grab the umbrella because that will not be the case for the evening commute. 71 at elsinore, northbound and southbound moving along. northbound looks to be picking up quite a bit along the 71 corridor. 75 a flip-flop, ebony five southbound really pick up, no big surprise. as you had outside, expect that. 71-75 in northern kentucky, moderate volume. no big delays waiting for you and we are still accident-free. 6:00 hour. lisa: thank you. starting out this morning with new information about the at madison junior-senior high school. mark: 14-year-old austin hancock is facing several charges. he is a student at the school and he is on the wrestling team. the wrestling team connects victims. school officials say 14-year-old cooper caffrey is also on the

the other shooting victim is 15-year-old cameron smith and he is a student. both are expected to survive and investigators are trying to determine why they were targeted. we are told two other 14-year-old students were hurt. katherine doucette was hit by shrapnel and brant murray was injured in the chaos after the shots were fired. today, students are staying home and teachers returning to figure out the best steps to take moving forward. lisa: there could also be a court appearance today for the 14-year-old boy accused of carrying out the shooting. wlwt news 5' s dan griffin was -- has been live at the scene from the very beginning. he' s at butler county juvenile court with a breakdown of where the investigation stands this morning. dan: no doubt, it has been a tough 24-hours for everyone involved. this case could head to court as early as this morning. the shooter, according to investigators, 14-year-old james austin hancock, faces a list of charges including attempted , murder and felonious assault after yesterday'

the butler county sheriff telling us hancock fired shots from a .38 caliber gun in the cafeteria just after 11:00 a.m., injuring four students. we' re told 15-year-old cameron smith and 14-year-old cooper caffrey were shot. two other students were hurt either by shrapnel or while running away from gunfire. all are expected to make full recoveries. but some students say yesterday shooting scared them, moments they will not soon forget. also captured on cell phone video. >> be hunkered down in shelter position. the building is now secure. police are now sweeping the building. the suspect is in custody. the injured are on their way to the hospital, nothing life threatening. dan: investigators say hancock ran from the school after firing shots, dropping the weapon. he was found shortly after by canines. investigators are not elaborated -- elaborating on a motive yet, and it' s not clear who owns the gun. we' ll keep working on this story through the morning.

wlwt news 5. lisa: strong emotions in the community after a difficult day, and last night people came together to show support. there were two prayer vigils, one at a church in west middletown and the other at middletown high school. the people who came out were hoping to help with the healing process. >> we got a lot of kids who go to our church here at baraca, that go to that school out there. man, i tell you, man, it was a scary moment. i mean, not just what those people went through out there, the families things of that nature, but just not knowing. >> it just strikes fear in your heart and all over the whole community. they don' t know what could happen at any time. i think people just really need to be together to pray and support each other. that' s what people need right now. lisa: madison local schools are moving forward with plans to help the students. the district' s latest facebook post says -- staff will report and together, we will begin to put plans in place including on-site counseling to support

school. extracurricular activities are also cancelled. mark: as you can imagine shock , and concern from the loved ones of the students. wlwt news 5' s andrew setters continues our team coverage this morning and joins us with a look at the reaction. andrew: madison local schools communicated as strictly as they could with parents during this immediate aftermath of the shooting here, even contacting the parents of the injured students directly. today, there does students will not be heading back to class but teachers will be. there was gridlock on the streets in the immediate aftermath of the shooting as people rushed to get to their kids. one thing that will no doubt be talked about is how the disaster plan worked. as word of what happens ready the community, people just wanted to make sure their kids were ok. there is always shocked that someone would target kids in the school, but even more surprised that it could happen here in a tightknit community in a school building built with an eye on

university of cincinnati' s blue ash campus. the forum goes from 6:00 until 8:00 at the muntz hall auditorium. mark: in commitment 2016, super tuesday has arrived and for the democrats, the votes today could swing the race. hillary clinton has been stacking up wins in other states, but bernie sanders is not giving up hope. >> there will be over 800 delegates will be elected to the democratic convention and we anticipate winning many of them and a majority of them right here in massachusetts. >> here is what i want you to know. i will work as hard as i can every single day. i will get up and go to work for you and fight for you. mark: right now, clinton has a commanding lead when it comes to delegates. she has more than 500 and bernie sanders has about 90. lisa: the republican race is a little tighter going into super tuesday.

our citycam as we get off to a breezy start again on this tuesday morning. what is coming our way today? randi: rain arriving right around lunchtime. this morning, it is rolling through portions of st. louis and heading into illinois. our temperatures as you step out the door this morning, upper 30' s to right around 40 degrees for most of us. we should make it to the low 50' s this afternoon before the rain arrives. for the morning rush, no worries. by lunchtime, the rain starts. it could be intense in the early afternoon. showers and thunderstorms for the drive home as temperatures

commute is going for you at this hour. things moving rather nicely. kyla: it has been a super tuesday on the roads. we' ve not had any accidents, and of the delays. we' re talking construction schedule to take lace up in clinton county. if you' re headed outside later today, actually, around 7:30 this morning. i want to talk about construction because it is a daytime closure. between 7:30 and 4:30 this afternoon on state route 73 between smith and williams road. they' re doing covert work schedule to take place today and tomorrow. plan for that between 7:30 and 4:30 in the afternoon. daytime closure for you. 71 at the jeremiah morrow bridge, traffic moving along northbound and southbound. it is starting to get heavy at this hour. lisa: thank you. we are staying on top of developing news. four students hurt after a shooting at madison junior-senior high school. mark: officials are now saying there is a link between the

the suspected shooter has been identified as 14-year-old austin hancock and he is a wrestler school officials say 14-year-old cooper caffrey is also on the wrestling team. caffrey was shot on monday, along with another student, 15-year-old cameron smith they are both expected to survive. there were also two 14-year-old students hurt. katherine doucette was hit by shrapnel and brant murray was injured. -- was injured in the chaos afterward. lisa: this has been difficult for parents with students in the madison district. we talked with several parents who could not believe this happened at their child' s school. >> you see this on the news, all these shootings, and your heart goes out to them, but it' s so different when you are in person watching it. >> it' s going to be hard to get over this. this is something you would have never imagined happened at this school. >> i' m just tired of this insanity that everyone allows to continue. i can' t deal with it anymore. lisa: we will continue to follow this story throughout the day.

hear from the students who were in the middle of the chaotic scene. we are learning more about the college student from cincinnati arrested and detained in north korea. mark: otto warmbier graduated from wyoming high school, and now he' s a student at the university of virginia. warmbier gave an emotional statement and confessed to stealing a political banner in north korea. in the confession, the 21-year-old said he committed the crime after he was bribed by friendship united methodist church in wyoming. people who know him seemed to be baffled by his situation. >> he just turned 21. that' s not what 21-year-olds do. they are not going over there to steal propaganda. it' s not what they do. mark: warmbier also begged for forgiveness in his confession, but so far, he has not been

randi: so we are looking at temperatures that will again make it up to the 50' s today. that we have some storms on the way and a drop in temperature by tomorrow. today, expect two rounds of rain. the first one arrives around lunchtime. the second time hits us for the evening rush. it ends with some snow, but not a lot. as we look at the radar, heavy snow to the northern part of the system. a bigger batch to the south of rain. we' re sandwiched in between these stronger parts of the storm. for us, we will see showers, maybe rumbles of thunder and we have a small risk for stronger storms through the day. looking at the radar this morning, there' s guys that will turn cloudy -- clear skies that will turn cloudy in the next couple of hours. upper 30' s to right around 40 degrees. 40 in florence, 41 in mason, 38 in springboro, 37 in hamilton. march 1, march comes in like a lion and out like a lamb. we' re the opposite depending on the year.

at noon, the rain starts in southeastern indiana and rolling through downtown cincinnati and eastern communities through the early and mid-afternoons. expect rain and thunderstorms. i about it :00 or so, the rain will give way to flakes of snow -- by 8:00 or so, the rain gives away to flakes of snow. we are well above freezing so even though we have snow falling from the sky, it should melt away as it hits the pavement. futurecast shows as we approach lunchtime, southeastern indiana communities will start to see the rain. closer to one :00 p.m., moving through and into hamilton county. it will be 1:00 to 3:00 as our main timeframe if we have the threat for stronger storms with damaging winds. you can see the leading line will have intense downpours at times. over the basically the entire area by 3:00. as the kids get off the bus, it will be raining. we may have thunder and

through. scattered rain with it and eventually, the colder air is chasing. on the back edge of rain, it will transition over to some flurries of light snow showers. it will be too warm to stick. tomorrow, 30' s and a couple of flurries possible. most of us are dealing with run-of-the-mill showers. concern. -- winds will be the primary concern. tonight, we transition over and see a couple of flakes of snow but no accumulation out of the system. tomorrow, a stronger flurry is possible. cloudy and 35. another system on thursday. we will start out pretty cold. heading into the afternoon, and transitions over to cold rain. we should warm up to the 50' s by the weekend. lisa: forget about a little snow in the forecast, tickets

thanks for waking up with wlwt lisa: welcome back on your tuesday. 37 degrees. we will take your forecast just ahead. we want to check outside the morning commute with kyla woods. how are we looking now? kyla: we are looking really, really good. as you get ready to head outside, traveling along 471, this is what you will see. traffic is off to a great start hopping from the 275 interchange up to downtown cincinnati. 65 mile per hour drive and only five minutes to get you over to the daniel carter beard bridge. we' ve seen a really uneventful morning commute so far. you will have a wet commute later today, so pack the umbrella. we' re seeing a few more cars on the northbound side heading into downtown cincinnati. no delays for you. mark: happening today, tickets go on sale for the western & southern open in mason.

randi: it is spring, bring on the warm temperatures. but we' re talking about rain and maybe snow. as a look at the radar right now, you can see scattered rain showers moving through portions of southeastern indiana. southwestern indiana, and moving our direction. i would expect to see spotty rain, but more likely threat kicks in and the second half of the day. if you' re headed out for a training run, i know tuesday is upon -- popular day for a group run, 6:00 in the morning, 40 degrees and mild. there will be rain and wind by 6:00 this evening, maybe heavier. we will see transition over to flurries but they will not stick to the ground. that will probably be after 8:00 or so tonight.

heading toward lunchtime, showers and some embedded thunderstorms will be moving in our direction. starting at the morning nice and dry in the skies mostly clear. temperatures come upper 30' s, low 40' s. 37 at cvg, butler county. 40 in mason. 37 in walton. you can see the clear skies all across greater cincinnati. we will slowly watch the clouds increase through the day. the rain we will be seen later on today, right now rolling through st. louis, central portions of illinois and scattered rain starting to pop up near paducah. while we may see spotty showers before we hit lunchtime, for most of us, the rain action will be going on and the early afternoon. as far as the severe weather threat goes today, you can see cincinnati and downtown considered marginal, meaning mostly showers and storms will be run-of-the-mill. extreme southern communities, under a slight risk for severe be the primary threat.

on the northern fringes, most of it stays well to the south. that is something we will watch through the afternoon. clouds arriving at 8:00 a.m., close to 40. at noon, the rain arrives. living through indiana and into ohio by about lunchtime. generally, the first couple of hours will be the noisiest. expect heavy rain and thunder and lightning. should be in the low 50' s. by 4:00 p.m., showers and storms continue. they will move out after 7:00 or 8:00. we will take a look at that timeline coming up. first, let' s get you to work and school. kyla: off to a really great start so far on this tuesday morning. incident-free morning. hopefully, that will remain for those heading out fairly soon. looking around the 275 loop in northern kentucky, 71-70 five picking up, especially northbound inside of the 270 five loop. the northeast corner of the

near loveland madeira and toward 71, getting heavier northbound. you may need the extra time to the last half hour. looking at 275 for the carroll cropper bridge, looks to be a pretty even spread on both sides of the bridge right now. no real heavy traffic in either direction. we are still accident-free. mark: new details this morning after a 14-year-old opens fire in the madison junior-senior high school just monday morning. we' re now learning that the suspected shooter, 14-year-old james hancock, was on the wrestling team along with shooting victim cooper caffrey. the other boy shot, cameron smith, is not believed to be on the team. both victims are recovering at miami valley hospital in dayton with non-life-threatening injuries. two other victims were also injured yesterday, but are expected to be ok. this morning, alleged shooter james hancock could be in court. lisa: we have team coverage on what' s next in the case and community reaction as the

community. we begin with wlwt news 5' s dan griffin, who' s live in hamilton this morning. dan: good morning. as victims from the cafeteria shooting recover this morning, the accused 14-year-old shooter could be facing a judge or the public -- butler county juvenile justice system. the butler county sheriff says 14-year-old james austin hancock, a student at madison junior-senior high school, fired a .38-caliber gun while students were eating lunch. according to deputies, hancock shot 15-year-old cameron smith and 14-year-old cooper caffrey. we' re told hancock and caffrey are both on the wrestling team. investigators say one of them was shot several times, the other shot just once. two other students were also hurt, either hit by shrapnel or while running from the gunshots. all are expected to make full recoveries, but those moments will not soon be forgotten. students ran to safety and called 911 for help. caller, hello. i met -- i' m at madison. i' m at madison high school. there'

getting that answering getting back to a since of security could take time. or the hundreds of students at this pre-k-12 grade building, everyone will have a story that were to share -- will have a story to share about where they were when the shooting happened. today, teachers head back to school. they' re preparing for the arrival of students. people are crediting their safety plan for the response to the shooting. students were really left on their own, coming face-to-face with this fear. >> i was about to move my chair over and i heard, like, a couple of a loud bangs. and then i looked over and one of the kids that got shot, like, grabbed his leg. he fell down.

shooting, like ran out. ,a couple of kids were screaming and crying and everybody ran out of the building. andrew: extracurricular activities are canceled here at madison local schools. classes are canceled as well but teachers will be reporting to begin the work of getting ready for students to return. reporting live, andrew setters, wlwt news 5. mark: thank you. oh how governor john kasich was briefed on the attack, while at a town hall in vermont. he offered his support to the families. >> obviously it is a tragedy, , particularly coming in a t know what' s behind it, yet. i am very happy there is not going to be any loss of life. lisa: the archdiocese of cincinnati also responded. saying, they' re sending their prayers to those touched by the shootings. we have ongoing coverage of the school shooting online at wlwt.com and on our wlwt mobile app. you can watch more interviews

from the scene. mark: while police investigated the school shooting, a gun was found at middletown high school. school officials say they found the gun in a locker during a lockdown after the shooting at madison junior-senior high. the school district also says students told a teacher about a possible gun at the school. police say a male student was taken into custody. his name has not been released. lisa: we are now learning a body found in a bracken county creek over the weekend is that of a missing mother. the father of tara turner tells us investigators matched tattoos to identify the body. fishermen spotted tara' s body in snag creek on sunday outside foster, kentucky. the mother of three was last seen january 31, and investigators have not said how she died. this morning in commitment 2016, super tuesday is finally here. mark: the stakes are high for all of the candidates as voters in about a dozen states cast their ballots. nikole killion is in washington with a preview.

the white house, which could be make or break for many of the candidates. more than 1400 delegates are at stake, with democrats awarding about a third needed to win the nomination while republicans , will allocate nearly half. after contests in four states and three wins a piece, hillary clinton and donald trump enter super tuesday as the prohibitive favorites hoping to expand their , leads. >> super tuesday is crucial in setting the tone for the rest of the race. rubio or cruz could stop trump' s momentum by winning some big states. but if they don' t, game all but over. nikole: but it may not be game over. several candidates have hinted that they could hold out for even more critical contests two weeks from now, otherwise known as mini-super tuesday. in washington, i' m nikole killion. lisa: let' s check traffic. kyla woods, bring us up-to-date. kyla: pretty super conditions on this tuesday morning as you get ready to head outside. we are talking about construction that will kick off

this scene we saw play out again and again yesterday, students will be getting support from teachers and counselors when they had back to class tomorrow. last night, a vigil was held to bring the community together. >> my heart breaks. i can' t imagine being the parent of a child that was injured, much less the parent of , obviously the child that did , this. andrew: work continues to prepare for the return of students. teachers will be heading to class today, talking amongst themselves and getting ready for the return of students, which is expected tomorrow. lisa: thank you. wlwt will be at the school and juvenile court getting the latest on the investigation throughout the day. also making headlines this 6:44. morning, an ohio-native and navy seal is the latest recipient of the medal of honor. mark: edward byers helped rescue an american hostage who was abducted in afghanistan in december 2012. the white house says byers

a firefight with militants to safely get dr. dilip joseph out alive. byers is the 11th living service member to be awarded the medal of honor for actions in afghanistan. pres. obama: now success came with a price. that first seal through the door, ed' s friend nick, was grievously wounded. ed is a medic, so on the helo out, he stayed with nick helping to perform cpr the entire flight, 40 minutes long. mark: byers has been deployed mark: byers has been deployed overseas 11 times with 9 combat tours. he grew up in grand rapids, ohio, outside of toledo. lisa: happening today the ohio department of health is holding a zika virus tabletop exercise in columbus. at this meeting, officials want to ensure the state' s readiness at the local and state levels prior to the 2016 mosquito season, which is usually from may to october. zika virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, though

has new details on the suspect and where the investigation stands. dan: good morning, lisa. after a horrific, unexpected day yesterday, the accused 14 out shooter could face a judge this morning at the butler county juvenile justice center. the shooter, according to investigators, 14-year-old james austin hancock, faces a list of charges, including attempted murder and felonious assault after yesterday' s horrific scene. the butler county sheriff telling us hancock fired shots from a .38 caliber gun in the cafeteria just after 11:00 a.m., injuring four students. we' re told 15-year-old cameron smith and 14-year-old cooper caffrey were shot. two other students were hurt, either by shrapnel or while running away from gunfire. all are expected to make full recoveries. but one student shared audio of what it was like to be inside the school after those shots were fired. >> be hunkered down in shelter position. the building is now secure. police are now sweeping the building.

the injured are on their way to the hospital, nothing life threatening. dan: butler county investigators say surely after the shots were fired hancock ran from the , scene. he was found by canines and arrested. it is not clear that motive or who the gun belongs to. we will keep checking up on that and we will follow here to seek of any possible court appearances. live in hamilton, dan griffin, wlwt news 5. lisa: thank you. strong emotions in the community after a very difficult day. and last night, people came together to show support. there were two prayer vigils, one at a church in west middletown and the other at middletown high school. people came out, hoping to help with the healing process. it was a troubling time for loved ones of students. mark: andrew setters continues our team coverage this morning. he joins us with a look at the reaction.

madison local schools communicated with parents as directly as they could, sending out robo calls and posting on social media. students were able to communicate with their parents via so fun, but they' re still gridlock as people wanted to get to the school, touch search him and, make sure they were ok. one thing that will no doubt be talked about is how the disaster plan worked. as word of what happened spread of the community, people just wanted to make sure there kids were ok. shock that someone would target kids at the school, but even more surprising it happening in a tightknit community in a school building it with an eye on security. >> you just can' t believe it because you see it on the news, it happens to other people, but it doesn' t happened as because everybody knows everybody here. i just can' t imagine. people really fight to get into the school. it is a good school. they take good security measures . it is hard for me to get in sometimes, you know? i'
