this is wlwt news 5 today. mark: good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. i' m mark hayes. lisa: i' m lisa cooney. your headlines are straight ahead. let' s check the forecast. yesterday was super tuesday. what do we call today? randi: we' re going to see temperatures vary winter like, in the 30' s. same thing tomorrow. you will notice some flurries. we see flurries across ohio and into kentucky, indiana. right now it is fairly steady through ohio. steady flurry activity through downtown, butler warren, basically everybody through ohio. they are not accumulating. right now temperature-wise, we are in the 20'

27 degrees at cvg. the wind about 15 miles per hour. it feels like the low 20' s when you head out the door. by lunchtime, i think the flurries are tapering off. we should see some sunshine through the afternoon. snow returns to the forecast tomorrow. mark and lisa. mark: new this morning, a late-night shooting is under investigation in west price hill. police responded to sunset avenue around 11:45 for reports of a woman shot. police say 15 to 20 shots her -- were fired hitting several one bullet his a woman in the leg as she got out of her car. it' s unclear if she was targeted but police say she was not helping in the investigation.

this morning students of madison junior/senior high will head back to school, following monday' s tragic shooting there. : lisa: last night, they got a first look inside the school since it was locked down, after 14-year-old austin hancock allegedly opened fire in the cafeteria. students and parents got the opportunity to walk through together, to deal with the reality that two teenagers were shot and two others hurt. wlwt news 5' s emily wood has reaction from the families. emily: last night was difficult for students and parents. madison wants to move forward. instead of a packed parking lot for a tuesday night game or pta meeting, madison junior/senior high opened its doors for an unprecedented night of healing. this walk-through, a simple yet powerful gesture from the district, allowed families back inside for the first time since the shooting. >> it was really emotional at first. i was really scared and upset, but then once they started talking to me and i looked around and saw it was the same,

emily: freshman kaitlyn morris was not in the cafeteria when the shots were fired, but she is still struggling with the fact it happened at her school. her mom, cathy, says tonight was hard but really helpful. >> when we first walked in it was really unsettling, you know, just being there where it actually happened. you walked into the cafeteria is where everybody met, and it was heartbreaking to see the kids. you could tell it was very uncomfortable. emily: an uncomfortable moment but an important first step to start coping with the pain and emotions from a day this community will never forget. >> i' m sure it will be a little bit emotional, but the teachers are here to help us. they have people coming in to counsel, and i think we' ll be ok. emily: this morning extra staff members will be on the busses with students, and crisis counselors will be available. reporting from madison township. mark:

away from gunfire is reliving the horror inside the madison cafeteria. only on wlwt, news 5' s tammy mutasa has the interview with one of the students injured in the gunfire. tammy: i spoke with brant murray. he still has bullet fragments in his leg. he says even though the shooting was scary, he feels safe and ready to go back to school. >> just try to stay calm and not die. tammy: brant murray was that close to the gunfire. >> there' s one piece right here and one piece down here. tammy: the bullet fragments are still lodged in his leg. >> it was just weird. just couldn' t believe what was happening. tammy: one minute the 13-year-old was sitting at the cafeteria table with his friends cameron smith and cooper caffrey. the next minute -- >> and then all of a sudden the kid stood up and started shooting at us, at our table, hitting two of my friends and then me in the leg. we didn' t know what was happening until i looked over

then, you know, i saw it and jumped down to the floor and grabbed my friend with me. tammy: he didn' t even realize he was hurt until the group ran out of the chaos in the cafeteria to the choir room. >> most people were screaming, and by the time me and my friends stood up, there was no one in the room. they had all ran out. it was just like that. just gone. tammy: austin hancock sits in the juvenile detention center charged in the shooting. tonight brant and his classmates walked through the school for the first time since the terrifying day. they can' t help but have feelings of gratitude. >> it was a good thing the school did. they opened the doors up. all the teachers are in there. administrators are in there. positive feeling. kids are feeling good. >> thankful that is wasn' t worse than it could have been. tammy: this week brant will be consulting with a surgeon to see if he needs surgery. he says he' s thankful his friends are recovering.

s hillary clinton. mrs. clinton: instead of building walls, we' re going to break down barriers. mark: bernie sanders wib on in four states yesterday. lisa: the republicans will have a debate tomorrow night in detroit. democrats simply in flint, michigan. mark: instead of campaigning in the 12 super tuesday states, gop front-runner donald trump focused on the next states preparing to vote. trump made stops in ohio and kentucky on tuesday. this is video of his stop in columbus, two weeks before the primary. trump threw down the gauntlet in ohio, mocking governor kasich and his ability to win his own state in the upcoming primary. trump also disputed portrayals that he' s divisive. mr. trump: and people don' t know that about me. i bring people together. you know, when i say that sometimes, i' ll get a snicker from the wise guys in the press.

t get worse than it is right now. mark: in louisville last night, trump touched on the recent changes to epa regulations that have crippled coal production and prompted layoffs at mines across the state. trump also blamed president obama for what he said was a decimation of the coal industry. lisa: 27 degrees and light flurries. randi: they are around and lighter through kentucky and southeastern indiana. much of ohio is dealing with flurries and light snow showers. overs to ft. wayne and it is an issue merely for the morning rush. mid to late morning i think the flurries are gone. they are in clinton county and the northern portions of warren county.

nasa astronaut scott kelly and russian cosmonaut mikhail kornienko are back on earth this morning. their capsule parachuted to a barren location in central asia. they were met by freezing temperatures, just like when they launched from kazakhstan on march 27th last year. mark: and for the first time in history, the u.s. army has opened up 20,000 combat positions to women. a combat engineer is responsible for the movement of friendly and enemy forces. that means they' re involved in the detonation of explosives and destruction of obstacles. this high schooler named josselyn is one of the first female recruits to secure the job. it' s the final week of the regular season for college basketball. lisa: fans are gearing up for some march madness. george vogel has the latest from the courts. george: college basketball has entered the final week of the regular season. welcome back. the kentucky wildcats are safely

rain showers. a dusting for some, maybe half an inch for others. it is not a lot. and then we transition over to rain. pan lan on some flurries to start the day. we end the day tomorrow with a cold rain. for the weekend, high temperatures towards 50. lisa: thank you. when the gunshots rang out in the school cafeteria at madison junior/senior high school, police were first alerted to the chaos by a 13-year-old boy named conner. only on wlwt, i got the chance to speak with connor about his run for safety and his quick thinking to call 911. >> i' m at madison high school. there' s a shooting. lisa: his is the panicked, breathless voice calling for help. >> he'

he started shooting people. i heard a shot. it sounded like a bag popping. really loud. lisa: conner hamrick was as close as you can get to the gunfire without being hit. >> i look up and see a kid standing there with a gun held out like this. and i saw smoke and a flash followed by three more shots. lisa: conner got down and crawled to the nearest exit, the door to the gym. >> i got up and started running through the gym. i told people to run, there was someone shooting in the cafeteria. lisa: so once they got outside, conner and his friends crossed a playground, a ballfield under a fence and a half mile away. they stopped here, moisman road. this is where conner called 911. >> how many people did he shoot? >> i' m not sure. he just pulled out a gun and started shooting. we didn'

on until afterwards heard it' s --. it' s just a blur. lisa: still, conner had the presence of mind to be able to pinpoint for dispatchers exactly where the shooter was inside the very large school. after that he called his mom. >> mom, i' m ok, but there was a shooting. i said, "excuse me?" lisa: jeri lewis' s emotions went from relief to love and pride. >> he got those kids back to the house. they were safe and he prayed with them. that was his next instinct. he prayed with those kids. lisa: since conner was a witness, he was brought back to he says he' s exhausted and thinking of his classmates as they recover. as we mentioned earlier, kids will be returning to school today, but officials say teachers and counselors will be on hand for any student wishing to talk. mark: happening today, there could be some traffic delays along columbia parkway, as crews remove mud and debris building up near kemper lane. nothing has come over the

westbound lanes of columbia parkway will be closed this morning so work can be done in that area. the lanes will be closed starting at 9:00 a.m. the work is expected to wrap up before noon. also happening today, streetcar number four is on the move and expected to be delivered this afternoon. that means there will be a couple of street closings today in over-the-rhine. it' ll take about 90 minutes for the streetcar to be unloaded from a flat-bed truck onto the tracks. the next delivery is expected before the end of this month. meanwhile, on-track testing with one of the streetcars is scheduled thursday and friday afternoons along main street. lisa: some areas are beginning to clean up after a strong round of storms. neighbors say at least one woman was inside when her home was destroyed. she had to be taken to the hospital, but is expected to be ok. >> cincinnati' s certified most accurate forecast.

the reds play yesterday but it' s still feels like winter and we are starting the morning in flurries for the morning rush. generally a chilly day and more snowfall tomorrow. i expect sunny skies by the afternoon. tomorrow morning snow showers began. it is not going to be a widespread snow. we could see some light accumulation for the morning drive. we transition from snow to rain showers. and then a cold rain through the afternoon fading into thursday evening. into the weekend and our temperatures warm back up. we may make it almost to 70 by early to mid next week.
