mark: car on it' s top. what we' ve learned about this early-morning accident that sent a driver to the hospital. lisa: madison students back in school and trying to heal after the shooting earlier this week. what the students had to say after their first day back, and the exciting trip for the wrestling team. mark: plus, stopping violence in schools. the movement underway at one local district to make sure teachers and students are prepared. m mark hayes. lisa: i' m lisa cooney. your headlines are straight ahead. 31 degrees and some flurries. randi: we are starting out day with flurries and light snow showers. it is march, which is a good thing. we have a snowy picture. we are starting out with flurries and snow showers. i have seen a lot of salt roadways this morning. right now very light snow showers through hamilton county. owenton, owen county, some decent snow showers. to the north of hamilton county, light flurries there.

we are watching flurries drift through this morning. south of louisville a gets warmer. we will eventually warm up and we will see rin ain mixing in. here is the breakdown for today. 28 degrees. noon, rain and snow. through the afternoon, sunspots will have rain in some spots will have snow. temperatures in the upper 30' s. the pavement should have no impact this afternoon. mark? mark: new this morning, a driver is in the hospital after she flipped her car after hitting a parked car. this happened in westwood around 2:30 this morning at the intersection of glenmore and hanna. no word on the driver' s

crash. lisa: returning to a place where a tragedy took place earlier this week. students returned to madison junior/senior high school wednesday, their first day back after 14-year-old james justin hancock opened fire in the cafeteria. most students were ready to walk the halls, but not some. officials say three of the four injured students did not return wednesday. students described their first day back to us. >> i just still couldn' t believe it happened. you' d never think it would happen to our school. we' re so close. >> everybody just got straight to class. it was no talking at all. it was really quiet and that' s not normal for our school. lisa: students who still don' t feel comfortable coming back this week will have an excused absence. the madison wrestling team is expected to be traveling. traveling to columbia' s for the state championship. mark: the family of the accused shooter, austin hancock, speaking on the tragedy for the first time. the family released this statement saying, "we are devastated by austin' s

we pray for the immediate recovery of the injured students and for the healing of the entire community." they go on to say, "our family has lived in this community our entire lives, and we never expected anyone to experience the event that occurred on monday, and we certainly did not expect that one of our family members would be involved. we are praying for everyone involved, including austin, whom we still deeply love." lisa: the community is rallying around the madison students, hoping to help them heal. dozens of teenagers came together last night for one common cause, a night of hope and prayer. several church events were held two days after the double in the cafeteria. a larger event is being planned >> we' we' truth, and we' re going to give them a place to unwind. still close to home. a break from where the tragedy took place. lisa: a bonfire rally will be held tomorrow for madison

a 12-year-old boy is accused of using a fake gun to threaten students in mount healthy. mark: the student was taken to the hamilton county juvenile detention center after this gun was found on him while he was in a class in mount healthy' s achieve program. the program is considered a last-chance option for students with behavioral issues. the boy allegedly pointed the gun at two students and said, "i am going to shoot you." >> we have to take every situation that the incident could be a threat, even with a toy gun. they may look fake, but they can be altered to look fake even though they' re real. mark: the student was drinking wine at school when he was arrested. the 12-year-old boy may be in court as early as today. lisa: another scare at wyoming high school. criminal charges are now filed against a 15-year-old student for making a verbal threat. administrators at wyoming made students and parents aware of the threat, but did not cancel school wednesday. it' s being described as a threat from one student against an individual or a group of

now the freshman student is facing two criminal charges. >> we take all threats seriously. we look at each case and try to figure out what' s best for the person involved, the victim involved, and we try to investigate everything. lisa: the 15-year-old charged is being held at a juvenile detention center this morning. allowing administrators to have guns at school. it' s no longer a debate. it' s happening in one local district. mark: the tragedy at madison has many reflected on what can be done to ensure student safety across the country. news 5' s richard chiles got a look at what edgewood administrators are doing to face the threat of violence. >> we' re going to do everything we can to make sure students are safe. richard: superintendent russ fussnecker is vigilant about protecting his students. today, and everyday student safety is his priority. >> parents will forgive you if their children don' t pass the test, but they are not going to

injured or if they are never going to return home. richard: as a part of the edgewood safety plan, the board voted unanimously in 2013 to allow law enforcement certified school administrators to carry a firearm on campus. >> any administrator in the district who has a valid carry conceal permit and also goes through the ohio peace officer training, they then can carry a fire arm anywhere in our district. richard: joe eaton actively trains school administrators as a part of faster saves lives, here on the firing line and through tactics and first aid. >> you' ve got to have somebody in the building who can stop the killing and who can then start rendering medical aid. that is how we save lives. richard: fussnecker agrees, stressing a weapon is only a tool in a larger toolbox, from locks to training to communication. >> we at edgewood city schools will continue to think outside the box, putting safety and

>> you can not guarantee this will never happen. you have to look at what you can do to minimize the damage if this occurs at my location. mark: fussnecker stresses that the decision to maintain a weapon in the buildings bares a great responsibility. the veteran administrator also reminds that the firearm is simply one part of a larger safety plan. but he says he and his staff are willing to protect the lives of students with all force necessary. lisa: kentucky lawmakers are looking to crack down on suspects who try to kill first responders. the house unanimously voted to pass a bill that would make sure those convicted of attempted murder on a police officer or a firefighter would spend more time behind bars before being eligible for parole. the bill would require those convicted to spend at least 85% of their sentence first. mark: new information about the costs to dismantle kentucky' s health exchange. the governor' s office says it will cost $236,000 to dismantle kynect. but former governor steve beshear says the costs would be in the millions. nearly 100,000 people have purchased private health plans

kynect with the help of a federal subsidy. if the state exchange is dismantled, residents will have to instead use the federal exchange. lisa: 31 degrees right now on your thursday. we are getting some snow this morning. randi: it looks worse here on the radar. we' re still not seeing any flurries hitting the ground around downtown cincinnati. a better shot in a winton and over toward falmouth -- owenton. union and northern portions of butler county. a quick shot of snow is going to be around. watch out for a couple of slow spots. on the way to school it will be

into the afternoon, by about 10:00, 11:00 this morning, the rain starts to mix in. rain and snow, depending on what part of town you are in. the road should stay plain old wet. temperatures in the upper 30' s. no issues expecting getting everybody from work and school later this afternoon. kyla: you made my day with mostly wet roads. most of the roads pretreated. here is look outside in northern kentucky, 71, 75 on now zion -- mount zion, no problems there. very light on 71 at robertson. same thing over on 75 at 275.

no problems as you mark: good morning and welcome back. randi is going to update your forecast in just a moment. taking a look at some of today' s headlines. a piece of debris found along the east african coast may be from the malaysia airlines plane that disappeared two years ago. nbc news reported that an american adventurer says he found the debris in mozambique. it' s headed to australia for analysis. investigators told nbc there' s a high likelihood it could be from the missing boeing 777. lisa: just hours after the u.n. security council slapped new sanctions on north korea, south korea accuses the north of a new provocation. south korea' s defense ministry says north korea fired several short-range projectiles into the sea. the sanctions on north korea are

came in reaction for the recent nuclear test and long-range rocket launch. mark: the u.s. supreme court heard a challenge to a texas case that could shape the future of abortion rights in the united states. texas defended the law, which requires abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles and requires the procedure be done in an ambulatory surgical center. the court' s conservative justices wanted proof that the law lead to the closing of texas clinics. the liberal justices questioned why abortions are held to a different and more expensive safety standard than other procedures. some high school teams still fighting to make it further into tournament play. lisa: one team in particular looking to end a championship drought. george vogel has your morning sports . george: we have a lot of high school tea m still alive in tournament play. welcome back. purcel l marian is looking like a team. th e

this morning light snow early. i was checking on traffic cams. there is a dusting on the ground and the roads remain wet. that is going to be our team -- theme here. there is the potential for some slick spots. for most of us the roads stay wet. into the afternoon rain starts to mix in. the roads stay wet. that could be up to an inch of total accumulation. you can see the snow starting to roll in. it is all pretty light. starting to get going and not seeing any at the surface around downtown cincinnati. to the north we' re seeing light snow showers from liberty,

further to the south, a decent chance we are seeing some snow along 71, south of the 71, 75 split, and williamstown. it dropped a dusting on the grass in indianapolis. temperatures are going to be on the way up. take a look at the rain snow line. that will be rolling in towards cincinnati. 31 degrees right now with the wind 6 miles per hour. 8:00 a.m., light snow showers. be careful for some slick spots. by noon, rain is mixing in. a burst of snow this morning. towards lunchtime, rain and snow

are in the 30' s. the snow will be melting as it hits the pavement. some places dealing with more rain, other places dealing with more snow. into tomorrow morning, a couple of lingering flurries. totals today, not huge. some places, absolutely nothing. to the north where it is cooler, you could see up to one inch of slushy accumulation. generally a mix of rain and snow across our area this afternoon. 52 degrees for the weekend. next week, 60' s and 70' s. lisa: the republican candidates will be on the stage tonight in detroit.

s most recent victories. the republican party as a whole is beginning to panic. 2012 gop nominee mitt romney will deliver a speech tomorrow in utah where sources tell cnn he plans to step up his criticism of trump. it would mark a sharp turn from four years ago when romney sought trump' s endorsement for his own presidential bid. mr. romney: we have good reason to believe there is a bombshell in donald trump' s taxes. mark: the republican debate will kick off at 9:00 tonight in detroit, michigan. the democratic presidential candidates have their own debate scheduled for sunday in flint, michigan. attending tonight' s debate. dr. ben carson. but does this mean he' s ending his presidential run? carson released a statement saying he won' t be attending tonight' s republican debate in detroit and that he doesn' t "see a political path forward in light of last evening' s super tuesday primary results." but tuesday night, carson gave no indication that he was giving up. mr. carson: our nation is in

s the point i' ve been trying to get across in these debates. why sit there and talk about each other and tear each other down when we have such important issues to deal with? it' s like talking to a brick wall. mark: carson says he' ll go into more detail tomorrow about the future of his campaign at the conservative political action committee conference in maryland. lisa: new jersey governor chris christie under fire. six newspapers in his home state are asking him to step down as governor. the papers, all owned by gannett, published joint editorials after a monday news conference hosted by the governor. during the conference, governor christe would not comment. the papers wrote they are fed up with christie' s arrogance, opportunism, and hypocrisy. mark: happening today, a probable cause conference is scheduled for the man accused in the kalamazoo, michigan, mass shooting that left six people dead. the probable cause conference in the case against jason brian

attorneys to determine whether a preliminary examination of evidence will be held next week. prosecutors also hope to learn more about what led up to the deadly shootings. lisa: it' s tax season. ohio' s attorney general is warning about new scams to get your money. since january 1, the attorney general says his office has received more than 1400 scam reports. the two most frequent scams -- one claiming that you' re in trouble with the irs and need to make a payment over the phone to resolve the problem. the second, tax identity theft. our own todd dykes looked at this growing problem just last month, where scammers file a tax return in your name, using your personal information to cash in on your refund. >> cincinnati' s certified most accurate forecast. randi: we are looking at rain and snow in the forecast today. we start out with snow showers.

up to eight inch is possible -- up to an inch possible. we could have a quick little coating. i want to show you a wider view. it kind of hangs out to the afternoon over cincinnati. 10:00, 11:00, you start to see rain mixing in from the south. some spots near clinton county, you could see up to an inch of accumulation on the grass this afternoon. tonight we switch back over to flurries. be aware of the potential for slick spots as you head out this morning. 38 today. 40 tomorrow.
