s wlwt , leading the way, this is wlwt news 5 today. lisa: we begin with breaking news at the top of the hour. multiple deaths reported after attacks in belgium. mark: the attacks were centered in brussels, targeting the subway system and the airport. nikole killion has the latest. nikole: two explosions ripped through brussels airport during rush hour this morning, killing at least one person. all flights were canceled or diverted from the airport. authorities say the explosions injuring several people. and now the subway system has been shut down after smoke was reported close to e.u. headquarters. this comes just days after the prime suspect in the paris attacks was arrested in brussels. in washington, i' m nikole killion. mark: this is new video footage out of brussels, which shows the raid that led to the arrest of salah abdeslam. european officials say this arrest lead to heightened fears of an attack since many people involved in the paris attacks

all of this is expected to impact security for travelers around the world. lisa: richard chiles is live at cvg with how this could affect our area. richard: good morning. with these attacks happening around the world, airports are for cautions. right now, the tsa reload remains at threat level yellow. that is the intermediate level. it is slightly elevated, but it has been on that alert for the last few months. there has been radio traffic proceeding this attack. as you talk about those brussels attacks outside the departure area at the airport, certainly, a lot of caution. here is cvg, this was already going to be under the bubble as you see the vice president' s 727 -- 737 parked outside. when the vice president is here, there' s always the heightened

as the decisions are made, of course with president obama in cuba, we are very certain that vice president biden has been made aware of the situation developing in brussels and certainly making decisions. whether or not the vice president will choose to leave his engagement downtown and make his way back to cvg and get back to washington remains to be seen at this time. but right now, as cvg, we remain under very close secure area as always when the aircraft is on the ground. from talking with representatives as cvg, they do advise arriving early and checking with their website for passengers who are planning on departing today. we are able to pass on some good news at cincinnati' s connection from cincinnati to paris, going to europe, delta aircraft 225 was able to depart yesterday, leaving cincinnati at 5:00 p.m. the aircraft did safely this

reporting live from cvg, richard chiles. mark: thank you. as we of been saying, the vice president is in town to campaign for ted strickland. lisa: andrew, bring us up-to-date. andrew: they could be changing. no word from the vice president' s office of the strickland campaign about that at this point. we have seen some secret service agents making her way around downtown this morning. the vice president is scheduled to speak at a private event at the westin hotel later this morning. this is a fundraiser. he arrived in town overnight in anticipation of a morning event for ted strickland. with the v.p. in town, that means extra security at the venue where he' ll be speaking, plus moving him into location and then moving him out of town. that could mean traffic problems for folks as they make their way downtown to work this morning. he is in town to speak at a breakfast fundraiser for ted strickland, the former governor of ohio who is running for

randi: we are finally getting back to a more springlike feel. officially, spring arrived on sunday. the last couple of days have been on the cool side. normally, high temperatures average in the mid-50' s. today, we are jumping all the way up to the low 60' s. it will be a nice afternoon, but we are starting out on the cooler side. currently, most places in the upper 30' s. 35 in springboro. 38, harrison and mason. 39 in dry ridge. bit of we have about an hour and 45 minutes until we see any of that , but it will be a sunny day. once the sun comes up, the winds will get stronger. for that reason, a red flag warning has been put in place for adams county, bracken, mason, and robertson county. do not burn anything outside. fires can rapidly spread. the humidity is low and the

up eight local schools. we know now he is a 10th grader at dater high school, and cincinnati public leaders are pushing to have the student expelled. he posted several messages on facebook that concerned parents. the posts referenced being the next osama and a terrorist. aiken, withrow woodward, walnut hills, colerain, and mount s now being charged with inducing panic and telecommunications harassment. mark: kentucky' s attorney general is warning of a growing skin. into bashir says marcon artists are claiming to be sheriff' s deputies. he said scammers will call people and offer to take kevin arrest warrant if you pay them. these sheriff' s office are teaming up to warn people about the scam. they say that will never call for warrants and you should report any scams to them. lisa: a woman is wanted for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the university of cincinnati. cassandra action kassandra

indicted on charges of theft, telecommunications fraud, identity fraud, and misuse of credit cards. the 26-year-old is accused of taking at least $7500 from the school in 2013. court documents don' t describe how the money was stolen. mark: some college basketball news now. multiple reports say uc is going to let unlv talk with the bearcats' head coach mick cronin. coach cronin is one of the top candidates for the runnin' rebels job. according to the "las vegas review journal," he is interested but he has not agreed to fly to las vegas. uc president santa ono heard about the reports and sat down with cronin. last night, president ono tweeted this out -- cronin today. made it clear he is a key member of our team here at uc." a little bit later he took a playful shot at sin city writing, "casinos get boring awfully fast." lisa: we are staying on top of morning.

sources tell nbc news there are multiple casualties. this is a live look from belgium. we have also heard reports of explosions at metro stations and not all stations across brussels have been closed. we know one of the explosions happened at the check-in zone just after 8:00 a.m. local time, which is around 3:00 a.m. our time. the departure hall where this happened is used by international carriers, including american airlines. some reports say as many as 35 people were also injured. the airport has been evacuated, and closed to flights. mark: the blasts come four days after the capture of salah abdeslam, the main suspect in the paris attacks in november. of course we' ll update you on new information as it comes into the newsroom. lisa: outside live at home, we want to get a check on some local situations. right now, 38 degrees on your tuesday. let' s check the morning commute.

stay lisa: breaking now, at least 23 dead, more than 30 injured in four explosions in brussels. we are looking live in belgium right now. these explosions took place at metro stations in the airport. the entire country right now is on its highest terror alert. mark: this comes as vice president joe biden is waking up in cincinnati, scheduled to attend a campaign event for ted strickland. this is a live look at his plane at cvg. no word of his plays will lisa: this is happening as president obama is visiting cuba. the white house has not said of his plans will change and right now is expected to address cubans in a speech that will be broadcast live on state television. he also spend time with dissidents and civil society leaders to hear their concerns. the end of his day will be much less political, he will be taking in a baseball game between the cuban national team and the tampa bay rays with president castro. mark: also today, the supreme court will hear arguments on whether puerto rico should be

lisa: richard chiles is live at cvg with a look at how this affecting our area. richard? richard: certainly, as europe remains on a very high security alert, the ramifications certainly being felt at airports all across the nation. right now our own tsa at a threat level yellow, in elevated threat level, but we have remained on that level for the last few months. certainly, any time you see that boeing 737 in those iconic blue and white painting on the livery, you realize the has level of the executive branch of the united states is on the ground. there is always security concerns when air force one or air force two is in the area. air force two accompanied by that global c17 aircraft during those support equipment along with those suvs that make up the

surly providing a security bubble here in the area. as we are not certain whether or not the vice president will continue with his remarks downtown cincinnati, right now we have seen a little activity out here on the tarmac. again, not certain whether that is any indication whether or not the buys presidential aircraft is getting ready to get out of here or anything else has been elevated at this time. we have been informed by airport personnel that right now all operations are as normal. they do advise going to cvgairport.com before coming out , getting an idea of how long it takes to get through security. right now they' pre-check line is going at about five to 10 minutes, just a little additional delay going through the regular checkout. as it stands right now, the airport remaining on that threat across the country, certainly folks monitoring the traffic trying to understand if there is

>> this, i believe, was almost certainly a hoax, that being said, when lives are at stake we have to take it very seriously. and many, many hundreds of parents and students were reacting on facebook to his comments. mark: cincinnati is not the only district dealing with a threat. campbell county leaders are meeting today to discuss a threat from a 14-year-old student. school leaders evacuated campbell county middle school on monday after the student said he had a bomb in his locker. the cincinnati bomb squad swept the rooms. school leaders say some parents were not happy with the response. they will review the process and decide if changes are needed. lisa: speculation continues when it comes to the future of mick cronin. reports say he is going to talk with unlv about the coaching vacancy. according to cbssports, cronin has been looking to move and unlv is working to find the money to alert cronin from the bearcats.

reports of 23 people dead in four explosions at both the airport and subways. lisa: we go to brussels. >> we are now hearing from belgian media that they believe at least 10 were killed in that train station attack. we are working to confirm it ourselves. difficult to get a hold of any authority figures at the moment. it is a real-time of confusion and worry. european countries are speaking out china salvage -- are seeking out to make sure they are safe. they' re asking dutch nationals who were in belgium to check in and let their families know that they are safe. and across brussels, this is what is happening, people are reaching out. i have in receiving messages this morning asking if i' ve seen other friends here. it is a real-time of heartbreak and worry for those in the belgian capital in the belgian prime minister is asking all belgian -- all brussels

plans are as soon as we get word into our newsroom. mark: closer to home, kentucky still lieutenant governor is making a difference as she hopes to inspire students in the blue grass state to learn. jenean hampton read to a first grade class at a louisville-area elementary school. she then shared with fifth graders her story of overcoming adversity. hampton says she grew up poor in detroit raised by a single , mother. >> when you realize how my sisters and i all beat the odds and broke that cycle, generational poverty cycle, we are all first-generation college. to do that growing up in inner city detroit, poor is just a , remarkable story. mark: hampton is the first african-american to be elected to any statewide office in kentucky. lisa: all this week we are highlighting severe weather awareness. >> if we have a severe situation
