it's wednesday, march 23rd. coming up on "early today," as the search for terror suspects in brussels terror attacks continues. and the split primary contest in three western states. a special edition of show starts right now. good morning everybody.

right now a massive manhunt is underway. police believe these are the men behind the airport explosions. he is on the run. police say he fled the scene after the explosions and just in, nbc news has confirmed the names of the two attackers on the left as brothers. authorities say they blew themselves up. counter terrorism officials say that the men wielded suitcase bombs, two exploded, the third later did not. overnight, raids yielded what is believed to be a bomb making factory. and isis flag was also found. isis has claimed responsibility for the attack. hundreds more injured. bill neely reports. >> reporter: terror in the airport terminal. it's 8:00 this morning moments

a stroller lies abandoned. a survivor says stay down. through the smoke, a woman cowers, clutching a child. someone yelled help me. then survivors begin running past the bodies and the injured. some in shock and another calling with news she's alive. minutes after the first bomb, another explosion near an airport starbucks. and hundreds are running for their lives. others fled for the tarmac and safety, there was no safety in sight. ceiling tiles falling, dozens injured and at least 11 dead. another bomb was about to strike in the very heart of brussels near the european union's headquarters. 10 after 9:00 and deep underground, a massacre in the brussels' metro.

flee through the darkness. it's terrifying. they left behind a mangled train car, at least 20 dead, horror on the morning commute. many of those on the train and at the station here have been reading about the first attack at the airport on their phones when the bomb here went off. an american on the next train felt the impact. >> we felt a little gust of wind. my ears popped and we heard thuding. >> reporter: belgium's prime minister called this a dark day and all day president obama has been kept briefed. more than 200 injured, many by shrapnel. this nail is in a men's chest. at least four americans wounded, three are mormon missionary in the hospitals with sclap hrapnel wounds and burns.

days after the attacks in brussels. right now, the belgium prosecutor's office says they have not yet found evidence linking him or his group. and an american couple still missing. justin and stephanie shults were dropping off stephanie's mother that airport when it happened. she is reportedly safe. claudia, tell us what the atmosphere is like over there. >> reporter: a resident of brussels are waking up to a city still trying to cope with the horrific horrific, shocking events that shook europe to its core yesterday. the airport where two exploesh sive devices went off and we don't know when it will reopen but miles away from here, right in the center of brussels, life is meant to go on as normal.

belgium authorities want. they opened all the schools. said all the transfer systems will run normally, buses, subway leans. only two subway lines will remain closed. but it's remain to be seen how many will dare to get on the subway because they're aware that the authorities are on the hunt of at least one terrorist part of the command that carried out the attacks yesterday. they have released city tv footage and still in the airport of three men pushing each a trolley with luggages on it are believed to have contained the explosive devices. two went off and one did not detonate. the bomb squad detonated that later on in the day yesterday in a controlled explosion. the man carrying that was pushing that trolley wearing a dark hat is on the lun and the authorities have issued a still of him asking the public to help

now, of course, there are hundreds of policeman on the hunt for these men but abde abdesalam, being part of the command that carried out the attacks in november managed to hide in brussels steps away frim his family home for four months without the authorities finding him. they only found him last friday. so, the hunt quer carries on while people in brussels try to carry normal. meanwhile, cities around the u.s. have stepped up security in response. nbc news justice correspondent pete williams has more. >> reporter: in new york's time's square, extrapolice and on bridges and tunnels, more

radicalized person that wants to destroy somebody in the west. >> it is good law enforcement to focus on where threats are iminating from and anywhere there's a locusts of radical radicalization radicalization, we need law enforcement reforces directed there, national security forces directed there. >> i don't think we want to be inciting more fears, playing to people 's concerns. so that we turn against one another. i think we have to have a slow, steady, smart, strong response and we don't need to be panicking. and in the democratic arizona primary, hillary clinton handedly defeating bernie sanders. it was a different story in the democratic caucuses. sanders won the utah and idaho caucus. and massive and overwhelming turnout in the state.

the winner take all arizona republican primary. while in utah, ted cruz is the winner. he actually takes all forty delegates up for grabs. political analysts and best orleans. good morning, ellis. so, before we get to the numbers, did the attacks in belgium have any effect on voting? >> whoever you support, that just convinces you, you were right. if you want a firm hand, hillary clinton might be a person. a more muscular approach, donald trump. and i don't see huge changes. >> well, trump is edging closer to the delegates needed.

question mark from you. >> i would say we still have a medium question mark. it's certainly not sure while it was a winner take all in arizona, some of the other states will not be. and somebody has to got to keep beating donald trump, as ted cruz did. >> and utah. that was a big win for him. >> and the fact he got over 50%. held kasich down means he gets all of the delegates. everyone last night had a good story to tell except for john kasich but the other four can claim some sort of victory. >> and hillary clinton had a dominating win in arizona. is sanders gaining momentum? because people stand in line for hours to place their vote in idaho? >> the passion is there but he's getting more momentum than delegates. hillary clinton still got a little closer to the ultimate victory she needs.
