catholic. this so far makes the fourth school in the archdiocese shut down. we'll have much more at 6. for now live in baltimore, delia goncalves, abc 2 news. >> thanks, delia. it is being called a record- breaking kidney swap. eight donors and eight recipients in a series of disney transplants. it began at johns hopkins hospital. linda so introduces us to the woman who made it all possible. >> reporter: this "grey's anatomy" episode was all about kidney transplants. a groundbreaking procedure involving multiple donors and recipients. but a new record has been set right here in baltimore. >> we finally beat "grey's anatomy"'s record. >> reporter: johns hopkins hospital has led the first ever eight-way kidney transplant involving 16 people at four hospitals. the entire process got started thanks to this donor.

>> two weeks ago yesterday, i gave one of my kidneys. how awesome is that? >> reporter: for years, paulken wanted to donate a kidney. so when she recently bumped into a colleague who had been out sick for months, she knew it was time. >> robert, good to see you back. how are you doing? and he said i'm doing pretty good. >> i said is there anything i can do for you? and he said not unless you have a kidney. i said i have one. i'll give it to you. >> reporter: but she would soon find out her kidney was not a match. instead of scratching the entire procedure, she organize adam know kidney donor transplant. it's when a donor who is incompatible with his or her recipient ends up giving a kidney to a stranger. their loved one is then matched with someone else in the group. it's what happened to this couple, giving the husband a second chance at life. >> by the next morning, i literally woke up feeling 100%. >> i knew that he needed a

living donor. he really did. and i was the most likely candidate. >> reporter: the eighth and final kidney transplant was successfully completed here at hopkins on monday. doctor says the recipient was on dialysis, and the procedure was life-saving. >> she was literally days or weeks away from dying. >> reporter: doctors hope the record-breaking kidney swap will inspire more transplants so more people can experience the gift of life. in east baltimore, linda so, abc 2 news. >> and if you're interested in becoming a kidney donor, we have posted a link to the hopkins website on our website there at abc2news.com. and now to an abc 2 news update. if you live in baltimore county, you will soon be able to stop delivery of all the unwanted flyers to your home. the council unanimously passed the bill which is scheduled to take effect at the end of august. anyone putting out a flyer will have to print a toll-free number on every flyer so you can call to have the delivery stopped. the bill would also make it illegal to place leaflets on

car windshields. violators could be fined $500 for the first offense, $1,000 for repeat offenders. a new report finds that the waters of the chesapeake bay are so polluted that many people are getting sick. the chesapeake bay foundation says more people are getting sick from dangerous bacteria because of global warming and nutrient pollution. the case of infections from the bacteria are on the rise in the state. >> to force the government agencies to enforce the law, and that's not being done to the level it needs to be done. at the chesapeake bay foundation, we continue to be optimistic that the bay can return to a natural state but, it needs some help. more than 300,000 people headed to ocean city for the 4th of july weekend. but ocean city officials say that number is down by about 4,000 from last year.

los angeles. musicians, athletes, and other celebrities attended the memorial service, but the most touching moment of the service involved jackson's 11-year-old daughter paris. paris says that jackson was the best father you can ever imagine. the memorial wrapped up with group performances of "we are the world" and "heal the world" sung by lionel richie, jennifer hudson, and jackson family members, including his children. the jackson family thanked the crowd. the king of pop reigned over a worldwide domain. so when they said goodbye to michael jackson in los angeles, the sadness was felt in many hearts far away. here is abc's diana avellar. >> reporter: airports around the world were filled with fans of michael jackson tuesday. the lucky few of whom won a ticket to the memorial. >> it's surreal. it's very surreal. we weren't expecting it at all. >> reporter: others arrived in los angeles without tickets, simply happy to be nearby as

their favorite pop star was laid to rest. >> so many singers, an icon. everyone looked up to him. he -- it's so random. >> reporter: some of those who couldn't make to it jackson's memorial witnessed it on screens in times square and on television in leban. many created their own memorial. more than 200 jackson fans came together in a raleigh, north carolina convention center. >> a pivotal moment in my life, a memorial moment in my life i'll never forget. michael is an icon of this world. >> it's very loving here. it's just amazing that people can come together like this. >> reporter: across the globe in russia, dozens of balloons lifted into the air as fans sang along to jackson songs. and at the place where it all started, his boyhood home in gary, indiana, the modest structure is now a shrine to the pop star it once housed. >> he deserves it.

a bad day all around on wall street. the dow jones down 161. the s&p 500 down over 17. and the nasdaq down 41. atm fees, overdraft charges, they're just a few usage fees that are going up. bank says the number of delinquent accounts are increasing, and they need to hike the fees up to make up the money. some banks are even adding or increasing charges on checking accounts. currency conversions, and in some cases, there is even a fee for using a teller. the "wall street journal" reports that many banks may drop a fee if you take the time to call and ask nicely. well, if you have been thinking about taking advantage of the government's cash for clunkers program to buy a new fuel efficient car, you need to be sure that you're qualified.

air that is going to make its way in. how much cooler? probably 4, 5, maybe 6 degrees cooler than it was today. but still a change in what we have been having over the past two days when we've had normal temperatures. as far as what is going to be happening across our region tonight, no precipitation out there. nice clear scan with baltimore's most powerful radar. we have seen some showers pass around the philadelphia area on their way towards long island. but nothing around the baltimore area. it's going to stay that way probably until friday, the way things are looking right now. don't forget you always go to our website to abc2news.com and check out our interactive radar. this is our tornado alley section that you'll find listed in the left-hand column. and basically, what it does, it just allows you to look around and see what is going on. the shower and thunderstorm activity around the south carolina, georgia area. savannah getting pounded with very heavy rainfall. at least up here in north carolina, up in the wilmington area, the showers have ended after they receive between 5 to 6-inches of rain. but if we scroll up northward

to the maryland area, you see that we do not have fry showers but, all the showers right now going out to l.i.e. and connecticut and portions of rhode island. massachusetts getting showers and thunderstorms. here is our forecast for tonight. we'll see a few light clouds. but as the evening goes along, a lot of the clouds are going to be death dissipating. during the day tomorrow, a lot of search. a frontal system passes through the region, with no precipitation. more showers are going to be on tap now down to the south. but the next couple days looking pretty good. here is your forecast for the overnight period. tonight partly cloudy and mild. an overnight low of 63 degrees. tomorrow during the day, a little cooler than today with a high of 82 degrees, partly cloudy, still a little breezy out there. and the extended outlook for the next couple days. nice weather on 30, 80 degrees. friday we can see some scattered showers and thunderstorms with a high of 82. we warm to 86 on saturday. and then back down to 82 on sunday and monday. again, scattered showers. not waning all the time, but the scattered showers are going to be around for friday, saturday, sunday, and monday. again, those cooler than normal temperatures wallet. be back at 6 with more on the weather.

its way in our direction. the front is basically making its way through our region. that frontal system is right through that area right there. and in behind it, we've got some cooler air that is slipping on in. what that is going to do is drop our temperatures just a couple of degrees during the day tomorrow. during the day tomorrow, the overnight period, we'll still remain in this warmer wedge of air. the overnight low is not going to be too bad. if you're travel do you think 95, you're going to run into quite a bit of shower activity into georgia and even florida where they're just getting hammered with heavy rainfall. also up in new england, if you're going to massachusetts, rhode island, connecticut, you'll see quite a bit of rainfall in that region. right now over on the baltimore area, no precipitation is being picked up right now. with maryland's most powerful radar, nice clear scan out there. but again, if you go up 95 instead of going south you go up 95 to new england or take the train to new york, you're probably going to run into some rainfall up there. if you're heading out to the long island express way, be careful. take your umbrella along because they are looking for pretty heavy shower and

thunderstorm activity. our temperatures have been below normal the past couple of weeks or so, the past week and a half or two. but our temperatures today warmed up a tiny bit. in columbia from the storm center weather net, live data only available here on abc 2. columbia at 85. 85 in capital heights. caldor of at 86. 81 in bel air. look at stevensville on the eastern shore, 89 degrees. it's 83 in milford. delaware, easton 84. 83 in cambridge. elkton right now 82. as far as our forecast, what we're going to find overnight is a few little light clouds around the region. not a big deal. but what is going to happen is that little frontal system comes through. no precipitation. things will remain on the nice side with some cooler temperatures moving in. and also what we're going to find is a little lower humidity. about time we get into thursday, could see scattered showers. your forecast for the overnight period for tonight, look for partly cloudy skies, mild temperatures, 63 for the overnight low. tomorrow another nice day, but cooler, partly cloudy, and breezy with a high tomorrow of

now abc 2 news at 6. >> and we're beginning tonight with two breaking news stories. good evening. i'm marybeth marsden. first, a southwest airlines flight made an emergency return to bwi thurgood marshall airport a short time ago. apparently hitting birds during take off. airport officials tell abc 2 news that the flight had just taken off for providence, rhode island when it hit several small birds. the pilot immediately contacted

the control tower and returned to make a safe landing. no one was injured on board the flight. no one was injured. but the runway remains closed as workers inspect the runway and the plane. bwi's website indicates that most flight departures are now delayed. stay with abc 2 news as we get more details. and more breaking news tonight as baltimore's archdiocese closes its oldest catholic high school, towson catholic. it's over budget with too few students, simple as that. abc 2 news delia goncalves is live downtown with more. delia? >> reporter: marybeth, they say you can blame it on the economy. the spokesperson telling us just a short time ago enrollment took a huge hit. and this coupled with a $650,000 budget deficit, they say simply there was no way towson catholic could recover. towson catholic the oldest and one of the few coed parish high schools, saw a drop of enrollment of 81 students,

leafing a total of just 163 students. they will now have a meeting for parents and students next week, we're told, to discuss other schools where they say for the first year, parents and students will be able to pay the same reduced tuition of $9,500 a year they paid at towson catholic. we're told teachers and staff members, 20 of them, will meet with hr tomorrow in an effort to find other jobs. the archdiocese intended to break the news in a face-to- face meeting tomorrow, but because word leaked out early, they were forced to make phone calls today. >> extremely distressed and disappointed over the way it has become public. because we really take great measures to make sure that our faculty and staff and students and families are respected enough to get the information directly from the parish and from the church. and so we're, you know, greatly distressed that they had
