where consumers can share their views. diana avellar, abc news, chicago. >> now that gm sought of bankruptcy, are you willing to buy? consumer confidence and reliability on the gm brand and warranty protection is the key to bringing people become to showrooms. roosevelt leftwich takes a look at how consumers and others are reacting to the new gm. >> reporter: virginia fell in love for the fifth time about six months ago. her last relationship lasted for many years until she had to let her loved one go after a terrible accident. we're not talking about changing boyfriends or husbands for that matter. we're talking about her wrecked late model gmc jimmy, and her new love, this chevy hhr. >> the performance all the way around. open up the hood. >> reporter: it's that kind of loyalty that gm needs to get back in order to be successful again. gm came out of bankruptcy in only 38 days. in that time they closed plants, cut the dealer network and inconvenienced many people. the dealer arrest still

fighting the cuts, but hope the consumers come back. >> i think you will see a much more competitive general motors and chrysler for that matter going forward. >> reporter: back in the 1970s, you could go to almost any parking lot in the country and find that three out of every four cars were american made, and most of those cars were gm. back in the day gm used to be the largest automaker in the world, now it's barely holding on to number 3. over the years people lost confidence, and they have to somehow get that back. bankruptcy didn't take away consumer warranties, and people can still get help. but to win over consumers, it all comes down to relationships. >> we will be able to find dealers that are truly recognize the value of customer service, and be responsive to our needs there should be a general move afoot to increase consumer confidence, true measurable consumer confidence in the product. >> reporter: and it's been good relationships that have kept virginia a gm girl. >> it's an american car.

be vigilant. this is our watch. and we've got to say to aig no. >> reportedly, aig is not required to get the government's blessing on the bonuses since the payments are for 2008 contracts. but sources say executives are reluctant to hand them out without official approval. and lawyers for bernie madoff says he won't be appealing his 150 year sentence. the 71-year-old was slapped with that punishment last week for bilking thousands of investors out of tens of billions of dollars in what is being called the largest ponzi scheme in history. the state budget is in bad shape. the governor says she looking to cut $700 million to the current budget, which began july 1. the shortfall is blamed on declining income tax receipts. the governor says drastic cuts will have to be taken to balance the budget, and nothing is off the table. including additional layoffs and extended furloughs. >> as a state, we are going to do the things that we must in order to balance the budget.

it's all going to be painful. none of it's going to be easy. and we're in the process of doing that right now. >> the governor hopes to lay out his plan to the board of public won, july 22nd. new at 5, more details are coming out about former baltimore raven steve mcnair. according to a reporter for the new york daily news, mcnair once had a six-year affair with a stripper. that reporter talked with a trip club manager in minneapolis who said the player visited the club often and had a relationship with one of the dancers. mcnair was killed last week by his 20-year-old girlfriend in nashville before she killed herself. two weeks after michael jackson's death, the los angeles police chief says investigators have not ruled anything out, even homicide. it could still be several weeks until the release of the coroner's toxicology report, which should pinpoint the singer's cause of death. in the meantime, his father, joe jackson, says the second autopsy the family paid for didn't reveal anything. and tonight he is suspecting

foul play. coming up on abc 2 news at 5:30, joe jackson spoke exclusively with abc news. hear more on why he thinks his son was murdered. tonight the drug suspect who ran into that east baltimore elementary school forcing its evacuation yesterday is still behind bars. around 10 yesterday morn, police got a call about somebody selling drugs near william paca elementary. soon after this they stopped keon earl and ran a warrant check that showed he was wanted for parole. police found him hiding in a cabinet under a sink. he is scheduled to be in court on august 10. tonight we're getting a look at what that frederick county father was thinking before he killed himself and his family. according to police records, christopher wood left loving goodbye notes to his wife and three kids before the tragedy back in april. they were left near the bodies of his wife and children, 5-

year-old chandler, gavin, and 2- year-old fiona. he wrote to his wife while he loved her, they should have never gotten married. in a note to his parents, wood wrote he would probably go to hell for what he did. police in howard county are offering up to a thousand dollars reward for information on a shooting that happened near a basketball court. it happened last night around 7:30 near cradle rock way in columbia. police believe two groups of teens, including the victim, chianti johnson were fighting. johnson went home after being hit. a friend called 911. anyone with information can call police at 410. 313-3200. today was yet another day that didn't feel like summer. it felt a little like fall out there. the temperatures are very comfort this evening as well, in the upper 70s across maryland. 78 in perry hall. 77 in moncton right now. and 79 in glen burnie. the humidity is low and the sun is shining. it's a gorgeous night to be out at the ball field as we take on the bluejays at 7:05. the orioles are back in town. partly cloudy skies.

you're watching baltimore's station that works for you. now abc 2 news at 5. >> we have breaking news out of baltimore city. troy harris, a spokesman for the police department has been suspended. according to the baltimore sun, harris accidentally sent a nude photo of a woman to a local tv station. the article says harris was trying to send a mug shot of a criminal suspect, but attached the nude photo that had been saved to the hard drive of his city-issued computer. cookie dough confusion. the strain of e. coli that made almost 70 people sick, including some from maryland, doesn't match the strain found in a sample of raw cookie dough from the nestle plant in virginia. that could mean it was contaminated with more than one strain of e. coli. last month nestle recalled all toll haas cookie dough products made at the plant. they stay investigation

continues. more strong warnings about the swine flu tonight. the obama says the h1n1 vaccines that could start as early as the fall. in the meantime, experts are urging states to make plans for dealing with the next flu season. they say it is all but certain to be back. and officials in oregon are taking special precautions. already this summer, they're worried the h1n1 virus could spread at county fairs. here is the twist, though. they aren't protecting fair goers. they're protecting the hogs. the state department of agriculture wants to keep the people six feet away from the pigs at the fair, keeping them safe from the swine flu. well, officials at this year's fair in marion county have chosen not to keep people and pigs apart. instead, they're stressing cleanliness. keeping the animals clean and providing hand washing stations for visitors. >> a careful line between scaring the public or having a way in which they can safely still interact with them, but not feel that they can't be around or near the animals.

>> it's kind of ironic, but so far there have been no cases of any pigs in the u.s. of having the swine flu. but there has been one case in canada where a person gave the flu to a pig. now the forecast certified baltimore's most accurate. here is meteorologist emily gracey and maryland's most powerful doppler radar. >> we've been saying what great moods we're in because of this weather. even your dog was in a good mood. >> oh, she was running around the backyard. she loved it. >> patting yourself on the back. >> of course tomorrow i'm going to be not happy with myself. the weather tomorrow not looking quite as good. >> okay. >> we see some storms come in. but today, yesterday, we enjoyed beautiful, almost fall- like weather. still tonight to enjoy it. we're looking at gorgeous weather conditions out there. the humidity is low and the game is getting ready to start in about two hours. so we are going to see gorgeous weather for that. 80 degrees, that's the current readings in the airport. the humidity is at 45%, and the

winds are out of the south at 3 miles an hour. all right. looking live from maryland's most powerful radar, we're seeing what we've seen all day today and yesterday. clear skies, nothing to talk about. no precipitation in the forecast, at least for tonight. we will look at dry conditions out here. not an active radar right now. but by tomorrow afternoon, and tomorrow evening, that may all change. we have a cold front that may be pushing in. expect some wet weather as we head in towards the weekend. i want to show you the almanac. typically, this time of year we should be a little warmer than we have been today and yesterday 87 the normal daytime high. we're talking about temperatures that typically a little warmer than this for this time of ye. we've been below average. right now 80 degrees is our current temperature from the airport, with temperatures in the low 80s both today and yesterday. we were about 5 degrees below average, and the humidity made it feel even more comfortable than that. so it actually felt like the upper 70s. and the upper 70s are exactly what we're feeling right now in york, p.a.

77 in easton, and a very comfortable 76 degrees in ocean city right now. so looking outside, we had clear skies throughout much of the day today. that's the high pressure that has been sitting on top of us, bringing in the clear conditions. the low humidity and the light winds, that also is going to keep us clear for tonight. expect some partly cloudy skies this evening, and then by later on tonight, we're going to clear out once again. and that will also cause the possibility of some patchy fog. so be prepared for that, if you do have plans to drive early tomorrow morning. now by tomorrow afternoon, though, we're going to be dealing with a whole different weather situation. some stormy weather will come into the forecast by then. as you can see, some unsettled weather back to our west that is not going to make it here until tomorrow evening. expect most of the day tomorrow to actually be dry and pleasant. a little bit more humid than where we were today. but by tomorrow night, that cold front will come in. and that's when we'll see the shower and thunderstorm activity. and that's how we'll finish off the weekend as well with some unsettled weather. here is how it plays out. tonight partly cloudy, to mostly clear skies. tomorrow waking up to nice conditions. but watch as this cold front

gets closer and closer. the rain comes in. this is predicting by about 8 p.m. tomorrow evening. that is when the rain is expected to come in. unsettled weather tomorrow night, and then i think some greater chance for thunderstorms on sunday, both in the morning and another chance in the afternoon. some of those may actually be severe. we'll keep watching the radar pretty much all weekend long and let you know what is going on there. for tonight down to 63 degrees. not quite as cool as where we spent the last couple nights. patchy fog by early tomorrow morning. for tomorrow, though, your 2- degree guarantee 85 degrees. a little warmer than today. showers and thunderstorms by tomorrow night. but during the morning hours, and even in towards the afternoon, we'll have partly cloudy skies, and a little bit more humid than where we were today. for sunday, expect some unsettled weather once again. 86 degrees. we stay warm throughout much of the weekend, pretty much typical weather for this time of the year. monday and tuesday, high pressure will build back in. by wednesday we'll start to see conditions become unsettled again, more showers and thunderstorms in the forecast, and then by the end of the week

now abc 2 news at 5:30. >> it was a boom that woke people and shook houses from aberdeen to southern pennsylvania. good evening. i'm delia goncalves. experts have called it a meteor, and that's brought hunters from across the country to our area hoping to track down those pieces. joce sterman explains how a local man's photograph is helping them find some potentially very expensive rocks. >> reporter: it shot through the sky like a cannon ball on fire, blazing a trail captured on video by the york water company. but it wasn't a leftover firework that lit up the sky

monday morning. instead, many believe it was a meteor. >> i think it's amazing. it's a fluke. total destiny, fate, whatever you want to call it. >> reporter: mike henkey actually caught a supermagnified image of the meteor passing through, a nearly impossible feat. >> i had magnified a thumbnail in the sky. and it just happened that it flew through that thumbnail. >> reporter: you beat the odds to get that picture. >> yes. >> reporter: and now so-called meteorite hunt verse flocked to our area and used mike's picture to plot the course, hoping to get lucky finding the remnants of a cosmic collision. when you hear meteor, you're probably think some huge massive rock that comes crashing down into the earth. but expert sayers with something like this it probably burned up into little pieces as it came through the sky, leaving meteorite hunters with pieces like this. >> they break up in the atmosphere at some point. and so there are little pieces that get dropped along a path. so somewhere there is a whole trail
