now abc2 news at 6:30. the doors of calson catholic high school are going to close forever but those who love the school are refusing to give in without a fight. good evening. i'm christian schaffer. current and former students took their fight directly to the archdiocese today. abc2 news brittney gordon is live with our story in towson tonight. >> reporter: towson campus is located right here slated to close because of $650,000 worth of debt and also very low enrollment but for those with a connection to this school they say closing is not the answer and they're willing to put their money where their mouth is.

some current students to alumni from years gone by came out to the campus with a mission. they do not want the amp diocese to close down their school. current student -- the archdiocese to close down their school. current students couldn't believe this is happening. >> i can't believe i have to look for a school. we're still looking for colleges. i couldn't believe it. i thought it was a joke or rumor. >> reporter: with enrollment down like never before and the school thousands of dollars in debt from unpaid tuition bill there's school is not opening in the fall but those out here say that this school holds a special place in this community and they're willing to raise the money to save it. >> we believe that $650,000 is absolutely achievable and quite frankly, all we've had to do is ask and we've been receiving pledge promises out of the woodwork to the tune of thousands of dollars. >> reporter: supporters say this grassroots effort is not going to back down quietly. they plan on pulling out all the stops to save this school for generations to come. now when the decision was made to close this school, they only

had about 163 students enrolled for this fall. now those families will be allowed to pay the same tuition that they would have paid at towson catholic at any other catholic school that they choose this fall. >> thanks. investigators in anne arundel county are looking into the death of a woman whose body was found inside a freezer last week. family members say 83-year-old doris lea cooke had been bedridden for yearsful relatives told police when -- years. relatives told police when she died at her home in glen burnie several weeks ago they put the body into the freezer. police are still waiting for autopsy results to determine the cause of death and whether any charges will be filed. a washington d.c. woman accused of killing her four daughters and living with their decomposing body for nearly seven months will go on trial tomorrow. the bodies were found in january of last year when authorities came to bnita jackson's home to carry out an eviction.

the girls had been dead since the summer of 2007. the case led to changes in the way social workers handle their cases in d.c. a farming accident in western maryland has left one man dead. saturday afternoon 35-year-old virgil hostettler was trying to remove a clump of bay from a -- remove a clump of hay from a hay baler. if you're heading to the beaches watch out for jellyfish. 120 people were stung last week. they usually only see about 30 creatures per week this. year it appears warmer water and changing currents are bringing the jellyfish into swimming areas earlier than usual. >> today the front did push through early today which meant sunshine throughout much of the afternoon, although there are showers down to our south. we're looking live from our storm center weather net right now at the in are harbor and seeing nothing but blue skies, just a few cumulus clouds up

this. 88 degrees is our current -- up there. 88 degrees is our current temperature. a few showers to our south but dry in baltimore tonight. more sunshine in the upcoming forecast. we don't have rain for days. i'll have details and this extended outlook coming up in a bit. news out of afghanistan, two u.s. marines have died as the largest operation since 2001 continues in that country. thousands of marines are taking part in the anti-taliban offensive. they haven't seen much direct resistance but there have been several suicide and roadside bombings. 104 u.s. service personnel have been killed in afghanistan this year. abc news is reporting that a counterterrorism project during president bush's term was in the planning and training stages but was never revealed to congress. vice president cheney was told want to mention the project. >> reporter: the latest flack over cia counterterrorism programs is hitting congress like a bombshell.

lawmakers are upset over reports former vice president dick cheney gave direct orders not to tell congress about an eight year long on again off again secret cia counterterrorism project. >> we were kept in the dark. that's something that should never ever happen again. >> the cia should brief the congress. congress should exercise responsible oversight. >> reporter: cheney has often defended the bush administration's intelligence gathering methods. >> it was legal from the very beginning. >> reporter: news of cheney's role are spurring calls for the house intelligence committees to investigate cia activities in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks. >> we're in the process of gathering information. >> reporter: the attorney general is also investigating. abc confirms eric holder is considering a criminal investigation on whether cia personnel tortured suspected terrorists. the investigation reportedly will not focus on agents who followed orders but on those who went well beyond legal guidance on torture. >> those who followed the law, followed their directions, did

it appropriately whether an intelligence agencies or military agencies, certainly should not be prosecuted but those who went beyond it, those who broke the law need to be held accountable. no one is above the law. >> obviously we don't want to protect people who have broken the law. >> reporter: john hendrick, abc news, washington. good news in this sunday's pump watch. gas prices continue to drop. the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in maryland is now $2.49 compared with $4.04 this time last year. and this reminder. if you live in the city of baltimore, the city's new one plus one trash collection plan goes into effect this week. that's one day of regular trash pickup and one day of recycling pickup. there's going to be no trash pickup tomorrow because the new schedule only runs tuesday through friday. officials say this will save the city millions of dollars. the city has been mailing postcards and going door to door in some neighborhoods trying to spread the word but it's important that you know which days your trash will be picked up because they're

you're watching baltimore station that works for you. now abc2 news at 6:30. as the world waits for a ruling on michael jackson's official cause of death his sister says it was murder. two british tabloids quote latoya jackson saying she believes her brother was killed as part of a conspiracy to steal his fortune saying her brother was worth more than $1 billion she believes that made him a tempting target. she also claims that $2 million worth of jewelry was taken from michael jackson's home after his death and she also told tabloids she knows who is to blame and is determined to see them brought to justice. abc will be airing a special primetime family secret the jacksons after michael coming up this tuesday night july 14th at 10 p.m. that will air right here on abc2. the space shuttle endeavour is still on schedule to launch in more than a half hour after lightning scrubbed a launch

attempt yesterday. this is a live picture. the weather looks fine now. lightning struck near the launch pad 11 times but there was no damage found today. it looks great. the shuttle and crew are scheduled to deliver the third and final piece of japan's $1 billion space station lab. and in ohio the clean-up continues where a tornado destroyed several homes, damaged others and injured at least six people. many roads are still closed because of downed power lines and storm debris. several people are still hospitalized tonight. now the forecast certified baltimore's most accurate. here's meteorologist emily gracey and maryland's most powerful doppler radar. >> 86 at 6:41. >> it was a hot one this morning, not just hot but humid, too. so it was a little bit warm but you know what? we didn't see a whole lot of rain. the sun came out early but we are looking at cooling conditions tonight cooling down to about 60 degrees, not feeling it right now. let's take a live look outside

over the inner harbor and it is warm today. we are looking at warm conditions across the area and right now from the airport 86 degrees like we just said, 39% humidity. the humidity has come down from where it was earlier today because we did have a cold front pass through the area. winds are now out of the northwest bringing in some more comfortable air at 10 miles an hour. we are taking a look at our radar online actually. you can check out our radar online all the time at abc2news.com. this is our interactive radar and as you can see, no showers popping up across the baltimore area, although we do have showers to our south, that cold front moving just to the south of the area. so as you can see southern maryland, northern pennsylvania picking up some shower activity this evening. you can check it owl ought online all the time at be with -- all out online all the time at abc2news.com. wet weather was in the forecast for this morning, but that front pushed through, not bringing a whole lot as far as wet weather, so we are looking at dry conditions right now and we will remain dry at least for

a few days here. we had a dry past week and will continue to stay dry heading through the next few days. we did hit a high of 89 degrees. still haven't hit 90 degrees. we haven't hit it since april, so it's been a below average season. 97 was our record high society this date in 190 -- set on this date in 1902. we will have cooler temperatures in the forecast tonight most areas dropping to around 60 degrees and some into the upper 50s. our record low on this day was 53 degrees back in 2002. so 86 now from the airport, 86 in easton, 82 in york p.a. that front is just south of us keeping a lot of that humid air to the south of us as well. no showers expected here in baltimore tonight, although southern maryland and northern virginia will see a little bit of that wet weather. some storms in the forecast down there as well but fortunately all of that damaging weather is to our south. we aren't going to see any wet weather with this cold front. it pushed through the area

earlier and as you can see, it's staying south, has become stationary and isn't expected to move for a couple days here. we'll have it turn to a cold front once again and start to push further south by the middle and later part of the week to allow our next system to come into the picture but until then we're staying dry all the way through until wednesday evening. by thursday our next cold front will come and bring us wet weather once again. looking outside for this evening dry conditions across the area, staying dry the next couple days. so heading towards monday dry weather there, a few clouds build later in the day but for the most part staying dry through until wednesday, another cold front on thursday bringing a chance of showers and thunderstorms for the end of the week. 60 degrees overnight tonight, quite a difference from that 72 degrees that we hit this morning. so cooler air starting to work its way in at least during overnight hours, more comfortable area as well as that humidity comes down a little bit with those northwest winds. by tomorrow we'll reach a two degree guarantee off 84 degrees, not as warm as today and definitely not as humid,

mostly sunny skies and light winds in the forecast and that will pretty much be the forecast through the middle of the week. 86 on tuesday with mostly sunny skies. cloudy enough just a -- clouding up just a bit on wednesday with a high of 87 and we'll start to feel much warmer air come in by thursday. we may hit that 90-degree mark thursday afternoon as that cold front comes in bringing a few chances of shower and thunderstorm activity and by friday drying out. more rain predicted to come by saturday night into sunday. this all-star break is coming at a rather in opportune time for the orioles. the birds have now won two in a row and four of their last five. today they take the series from the blue jays bottom three brian robert, great piece of hitting. strokes one to the gap in right field. cesar izturis scores to second. the o's take a 1-0 lead. same inning two batters later nick markakis just drops the single into right.

the -- put it away in the bottom half, roberts going the other way for an r.b.i. single. the orioles win 4-2. berg sen continues to impress. >> i think he has established himself as a real nice story in the american league this year as a starter pitcher. it seems like any time he pitches he gives us a chance to win and it was no different today. >> i think we have shown a lot of good signs the last couple series and i think that's great for us to win our last two series going into the all-star break. >> now while the orioles, most of them, get a few days away from baseball adam jones does not. he is headed to his first big league all-star weekend. jones said the guy he's most looking forward to sharing a clubhouse with is derek jeter mainly because he's been the face of baseball for the better part of a decade. jones is hitting .303 on the season with 12 homers, although he hasn't hit one since june 13th but he is a classy kid.

he says he has looked most forward to making baltimore proud. >> i think that with the orioles i'm going to be representing the franchise, the team. when i was in baltimore i represented every baltimore fan as a city of baltimore. so i'm pretty excited about that. >> obviously talking about the jersey. two of the orioles top prospects play today at the all- star futures game, brian mann scheduled to pitch for the bay sox in -- and norfolk's chris tillman. he got the start for the usa against the world and it was a rough start for tillman. in the 1st inning first and third he singles, the right fielder not making the play making it 1-0 world. it was 2-0 and he bounced one and hit a batter. so it's 2-0 after a four hour rain delay just getting back out on the field world leading 2 -0.

a little over two weeks from today the ravens will start piling into their dorm rooms and getting ready for yet another season. training camp starts july 28th. this pack week mcdaniel college had -- this past week mcdaniel college had another football camp going on. the new coach said he loved it so much last year he just knew he had to come back this year. >> we had so much fun last year. i was out here with the kids. we would stay out until it got dark and play football and i'm just very excited about this year and i know we're going to have a great year and the kids are going to learn a lot again. >> it's a good camp. >> don't lie. >> it's a great camp, then. i came here last year. it was good. i like it. >> great job by mark clayton out there getting kid involved in more football camps. sadly, though, this is a very tough week for the ravens and really for football fans around the world. yesterday in hattiesburg mississippi the body of steve

nascar in chicago last night, lap 63 kyle busch gets loose and hits the wall. he would finish in 33rd place. 17 laps to go, jimmie johnson in the lead. he goes three wide with denny hamlin and brian vickers who weren't even on the lead lap. johnson gets shuffled back. mark martin jumps into the lead and takes the checkered flag, his series best fourth win of the season. they are in indianapolis next weekend. in case you missed it yesterday the body of steve mcnair was laid to rest in his hometown of hattiesburg, mississippi. almost 5,000 mourners were at

the funeral including vince young in the middle all there to say good-bye to no. 9, the 36-year-old mcnair. steve's son, high school -- steve's son's high school football team all came in uniform. a number of ravens were also there including ray lewis who told steve's son to respect the man mcnair was on the field. >> your father put out one heck of a sacrifice, young man. every time you all walk out the door hold your head up high because he left something that a lot of men can't follow. >> i'm not even prepared to even talk because the fact is, you know, steve was like a hero to me and heros are not supposed to die.
