>> reporter: anne arundel county police block off the streets and block the view to bystanders, keeping the grisly scene of the morning murder behind a curtain. >> about quarter to 7, i hear a bang, bang, bang. so i was thinking it was fire crackers. >> reporter: instead, police say it was gunfire, shots claim the life of a man witnesses say was brought down as he walked through this wooded path at the rainbow view apartments. >> a male person lying on the ground. >> reporter: nearly seven hours later, it still hasn't been moved as police continue to process the scene and search for evidence. >> they're going to continue to interview witnesses, and the scene is being processed. and the investigation is very active. >> reporter: and it was that police activity that surprised people who live here. >> you get up in the morning and come outside, and you see all this. you know, it's a shock to the whole community. >> reporter: a community left with many questions following the shooting. police have not identified the victim, and say they have no

suspects or motive in the case. but folks here know one thing for sure. this event has certainly sparked some fear. >> i've been here two years, and nothing ever happened like this here. never. so i do feel unsafe now. >> reporter: in glen burnie, joce sterman, abc 2 news. >> area schools including rippling woods elementary in the old mill complex were put on lockdown as a precaution following the shooting. that was lifted around noon today. anne arundel county prosecutors say it is perfectly legal to not report a person's death in some cases. now two state lawmakers want to change that. this case started when police were called to an apartment on furnace branch road last friday. they found the body of 83-year- old dori lea cooke in a freezer. she died several weeks ago, and family members stored her body in the freezer. cooke had been bed ridden for years. state law says health care and other professionals must report a death, but not family members. so two county lawmakers say they will push legislation

changing in this next general assembly. they tried to get a similar bill passed ten years ago, but failed. police are still waiting on autopsy results to determine exactly how cook died. a 72-year-old kingsville man charged with child sexual abuse may also face federal charges for child pornography. george hayward allegedly abused a 5-year-old girl while serving as her baby-sitter. investigators have since connected him to eight other victims. they discovered images of the girls on homemade dvds and now may seize his car and home since they were allegedly used to produce child porn. a woman shot early yesterday morning in fells point has died. police tell abc 2 news that 48- year-old josephine luitowski died. she was found off eastern avenue, not far from the heart of fells point. so far no arrests have been made in the case. department of defense officials say the bodies of two

marines have been flown home from afghanistan to the u.s. sergeant michael heed, junior of pennsylvania has family in maryland, and staff start david spicer is from ohio. he was killed in combat on monday. the soldiers' bodies have arrived at dover air force base in delaware. iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad is offering condolences to the families of nearly 170 people killed in a passenger jet crash. the caspian airlines plane went down shortly after takeoff today. a witness says the jet's tail appeared to catch fire shortly before the crash. all 168 passengers and crew on board were killed. and tonight we get a better glimpse into what it must have been like inside that southwest plane when a football-sized hole opened up in the roof of the fuselage mid flight. this video was posted on youtube by passengers. the plane's black box, along with part of the plane that ripped open will be sent to the ntsb's headquarters in d.c. so

experts can get a better idea of how this could have happened. coming up on abc 2 news at 5:30, we'll hear from some passengers, and learn what experts think could have caused that hole. an 11-year-old pennsylvania boy is still recovering after a tunnel he was digging in the sand in ocean city collapsed around him. ocean city officials say the pittsburgh boy was digging two holes in the sand with other kids. beach patrol members helped dig him out of the sand hole on the beach near 37th street yesterday afternoon. lifeguards worked on the boy, and he was taken to the hospital. in washington, another day of tough questioning for supreme court nominee sonia sotomayor. abc 2 news terry owens has more on how lawmakers continue to grill her during her confirmation hearing. >> reporter: marybeth, roe versus wade was among the hot button issues today. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle took turns trying to get the nominee to show her hand, but the judge didn't budge.

the harping also continued on sonia sotomayor's controversial wise latina comment when she told a law school audience, quote, i would hope that a wise latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life. >> do you stand by your words of yesterday when you said it was a failed rhetorical flourish, that it failed flat, that there are words that don't make sense and they're a bad idea? >> i stand by the words it fell flat. >> reporter: on her second day of questioning, lawmakers also touched on topics like the second amendment and abortion. some republican critics say they find her answers troubling. >> i am disappointed that we still have a lot of muddled testimony and lack of clarity. really, a person going on the supreme court should be clearer in my view. >> reporter: still, democrats on the committee have enough votes to confirm sotomayor, and even republicans anticipate her vote will be straight forward. >> if i have anything to say about it, you will get that up or down vote on the senate

southwest at 9. the pressure steady 30.02. the tide at fort mchenry. 9:06 in the morning. 1:21 in the afternoon. tomorrow's wind from the south at 8 to 14 miles per hour. we'll set at 8:31. temperature ace ross the area right now, new york, p.a. at 48. 84 in easton. over in ocean city, 84 degrees. 85 in dover and atlantic city right now an even 80 degrees. throughout the day, a few little light clouds early this morning. that was the reason that we did not cool off as much as i thought we would because we have a little bit of a blanket of clouds holding in the heat. but as the day went along, the clouds disappeared. lots of sunshine. what we're seeing right now is a big weather system out in the ohio valley that is moving in our direction now. the clouds are going to gradually thicken over the top of the region. and during the day tomorrow, they'll get continually thicker. and that's going to keep a lot of the sunlight from coming in. it's not going to get as warm tomorrow. it will be more humid. so it's going to feel a little more sticky there is going to be showers associated with the

across the united states. now watch the forecast for tonight. clouds will gradually increase as the system moves in our direction. but the majority of the rainfall moves north and south of our region. we will see a few spotty showers across the area. but our best chance for rain is going to be coming on saturday as the system kind of consolidates and moves in our direction. so your forecast for the overnight period. gradual increasing clouds, 63 degrees for overnight low. we'll have the blanket of clouds so it won't get quite as cool. tomorrow mostly cloudy, 87 degrees. a few showers are possible, but really not that likely. so we're going to be in the area, but mostly north and south of the region. the extended outlook for the next seven days. things clear up and cool done a bit on friday. and then saturday a better chance of showers moving into the region, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. sunday partly cloudy. monday a chance for some showers, lasting into tuesday. but again, below normal temperatures are going to be continuing with the exception of tomorrow when we get up to a very normal temperature of 87 degrees. we'll be back in a while with more on the weather. >> thanks, norm. in 2 your health tonight,

according to new research, babies still in their mother's womb can form memories. in fact, babies at 34 weeks gestation or the end of the 8th month of pregnancy are able to remember things for at least four weeks. how do they know that? >> researchers measured how the fetus responded to repeated stimulation to a fetal monitor to make a buzzing sound against the pregnant mother's belly. after many exposures, the fetus learned that the stimulus was safe and stopped reacting. researchers then tested the baby's memory after returning with the buzzer after some period of time. if it remembered the previous experience, then it shouldn't react. at 30 weeks gestation, around the end of the 7th month of pregnancy, babies remembered the stimulus for as long as ten minutes. but by a month later in the 34th development, this memory lasted up to four weeks. this study raises interesting questions about what kinds of memories babies might be form manage in the womb. but it may not be surprising

now abc 2 news at 5:30. >> and we begin tonight with a breaking news update out of north baltimore. good evening, everybody. i'm terry owens. the woman who was hit by a light rail train this afternoon has been taken to sinai hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. crews tell us this all happened around 4:15 as the woman was crossing the tracks at the mount washington stop when she was hit by a slow-moving train. mta police are on the scene, and so is an abc 2 news crew. we'll continue to update this story throughout the newscast, and online at abc2news.com. want a free ride to work? baltimore city is expanding its water taxi service for commuters. the service, which already runs from fells point to locust point will add a stop in canton. abc 2 news linda so reports federal stimulus money is making this possible.
