police say the scene he created this weekend was the work of a maniac. >> first of all, to assault the women is cowardice. to be running around the streets of baltimore, the established himself as a menace. and then backed it up with his cowardly acts on the scene. >> reporter: and when sinclair is released from hospital, he'll face charges of domestic violence and attempted murder. it will hardly be his first time inside central booking. >> he has a record. he shouldn't been on the street. and so we're doing our part, but every level of government has to do its part. >> reporter: mayor sheila dixon is reacting to this rap sheet three. felony drug convictions dating back to 1977 and a handgun violation in 1991. shawn sinclair was on probation through 2010 when police say he went on this weekend's shooting spree. but neighbors and friends of sinclair say it doesn't make any sense.

we even caught up with the first one he assaulted and he told us off camera he is not a maniac as police said, rather a loving man. this scene saturday afternoon points to a different temperament, one sure to be as closely examined as the gunshot wounds he continues to recover from. in baltimore, brian kuebler, abc 2 news. >> the officers are doing well tonight. officer curtis mcmillan has been treated and released while jerome sharrett has suffered three gunshot wounds. he remains in stable condition at shock trauma after undergoing another surgery today. city police continue to search for a gunman who shot two 16-year-olds last night, killing one of them. it happened just after 9:30 after the corner of east madison street and north kingwood avenue. police say the teens were standing on the corner when an unknown person walked upped to them and started shooting. jerod reed died on the scene. the second unidentified teen is recovering at johns hopkins hospital. police say they have no motive

for the attack. a 16-year-old is charged as an adult in the violent escape of 14 offenders from a state run juvenile facility last may. six staff members were hurt during the escape. george is charged with escape, assault, burglary, theft, and destruction of property. all of the escapees were recaptured within an hour, but now a state investigation is questioning if the facility can handle some of the youths confined there. now to a developing story. u.s. military experts look for clues that will lead them to a u.s. soldier being held by the taliban. he vanished in afghanistan about three weeks ago. now the taliban has released a video of the soldier, urging a u.s. pullout from the country. viviana hurtado reports. >> my name is bo. >> reporter: this video makes public what the military has known for two weeks. bo birdle all is in enemy

homes. >> i'm scared i won't be able to go home. it's very unnerving to be a prisoner. >> reporter: he disappeared in eastern afghanistan after he wandered off his military base. it's still not known why he left. >> i have a very good family that i love back home in america. >> reporter: in his hometown of haley, idaho, peace signs as the family asks for privacy and the public to pray for their son's safe return. this coffee shop where the he worked before joining the army is organizing support. >> they're going to start setting up financial fund for bo's parents in case they have need to travel. >> reporter: the military has mobilized resources to get him back, including dropping leaflets asking locals for help, and threatening his captors. the kidnapping and proof of life video have prompted strong reactions from u.s. officials. >> our commanders are pairing no effort to find this young soldier. and i also would say my

personal reaction was one of disgust at the exploitation of this young man. >> it's just outrageous that these people are basically common criminal kidnappers. >> reporter: afghanistan has now become the deadliest front for u.s. forces. the military confirms four more americans died there with the number of u.s. fatalities for july at 30. viviana hurried tad doe, hurtado. trying to determine what sparked a deadly west baltimore blaze last night. it happened in the first block of south carey street just after 9:00. flames spread quickly through the three-story row home which appeared to be vacant. but when firefighters pride wood from the doors and windows to get inside, they found two unconscious people. one of them died. the other is at the medical center. a firefighter also received minor injuries while battling the blaze. the man accused of killing a security guard at the u.s.

holocaust museum remains hospitalize, recovering from his wounds, but now we're learning more about white supremacist jame van brun who lived in annapolis at the time of the shooting. art dealers say van von brunn, but scared at least one gallery owner when he talked about his hatred for minorities. von brunn also said he didn't believe in the holocaust. a judge is still waiting for him to recover enough to appear in court. none of his paintings sold. maryland's highest court doesn't want anything to do with the dispute over laurel racing's rejected slot bid for now. the court appeal says it is a question for a state board. they want their bid reinstated even though they did not put up a $28 million licensing fee. they have ruled the state

contract appeals has jurisdiction over the matter, and it's too soon for the courts to get involved. maryland's senior senator will be off her feet for a while. senator barbara mikulski needs surgery after she broke her ankle in three places. she broke her ankle while walking down the steps while she left church in baltimore. surgery has not yet been scheduled. around our region right now, a shower, and even some thunderstorm activity currently showing up on maryland's most powerful radar. the heaviest activity is down to the south of d.c., right around the mouth of the potomac, also out on in western maryland over garrett county. i'm going to slide the radar over just a tiny bit so you can see the shower and thunderstorm activity out there in western maryland. all the activity is moving from the south to the north, and we will be seeing some shower and thunderstorm activity a little later on here in the baltimore area. here is your forecast for this evening. cloudy, showers and storms out to the west. but some could visit the baltimore area some time around 8:00 or 9:00 this evening. we'll have the complete forecast coming up in a couple

minutes. >> thanks, norm. a frederick county man faces several charges after a deadly crash killed a carroll county teenager. it happened on francis scott key highway near taneytown about 10:30 last night. 15-year-old catlin bossler died in the crash. police say 42-year-old kevin smith hit a parked car and a girl as she stood along the side of the road. smith faces negligent manslaughter, driving under the influence and other charges. tonight police in anne arundel county need your help tracking down this woman right here. they say wednesday she robbed the citgo gas station in linthicum. police say the woman told employee she's had a weapon and that she would use it. she demanded money, which the employee gave her. anyone with information on this crime should call metro crimestoppers. the number is 1-866-7-lock-up. it's been almost one year since the tragic accidental death of a popular baltimore dj, kay swift. now her parents are suing her

former business partners for fraud. kay smith died of neck injuries suffering during a pool party at her home. juanita and joseph claim that her partners forged her name on business agreements in july of 2005, and they also claimed that the company is withholding k can kay swift's royalty. the attorney for the partner says the charges are ridiculous. it has been about two weeks since a light rail train hit and killed two teenagers, and tonight baltimore county police are still searching for answers. they say they're looking for a passenger who was on the train that hit and killed jarrett connor peterson, and kyle wankmiller. authorities say the teens were walking on the tracks near the lutherville station when the train hit them. police say the male passenger who was on the train is not in any trouble, but they say he could help them with the investigation. so far police have gotten just one call on this possible witness. if you know the man the police are looking for, you are asked to call baltimore county

police. the number is right there on the screen, 410-307-2020. and the latest now on that brutal murder of a florida couple. the adult daughter of byrd and melanie billings says she will move into her parents' home and take care of her 13 younger brothers and sisters. 26-year-old ashley markham says it was her mother's wish if something happened to her. the billings had adopted 13 children with autism, downs syndrome and other developmental disabilities. they were murdered during a home robbery earlier this month. eight suspects have been arrested. memorial plans are coming together for legendary newsman walter cronkite. a private funeral is planned for thursday at the manhattan church that cronkite attended for years, and the public memorial service is being planned at new york's lincoln center within the next month. the former anchor of cbs evening news died friday night, and since then friends and colleagues have been sharing

breeze, pulling moisture into the region. that's what is going to cause the higher than normal tides. and the heaviest rainfall is going to be on the eastern shore. right now we're seeing some shower activity to the south and west of our region. right now maryland's most powerful radar. here is the baltimore area. most of this activity is in the upper atmosphere not reaching the ground. here is heavier showers and thunderstorms. as you can see, they're moving up towards the north and west. kind of moving on that direction, basically on that line right there. that's where they're going to see the heaviest activities out in that region, at least for tonight there is a chance for scattered showers around the baltimore area, going through portions of carroll, down to howard and portions of montgomery county. but again, the heaviest rainfall is going to be out to the west of us, and also along the eastern seaboard, they will see some heavier showers as the areas of low pressure pass on along. don't forget, you can always go to our website, to abc2news.com. check out our interactive radar. that's what it's looking like right now with a closer scan into the baltimore area. but if we widen the scan out, which you can do on your own computer at home, we widen that
