>> in u.k. >> were you working there or what? >> i was working so i didn't get to see a lot. the first day i got there i was like, oh, man. really pretty. it's like, you know, everything is really green. i'm going to take a little jog. i didn't know that -- i got there like the day after -- there was like a huge holiday. and like it was a big holiday that i never heard of. not -- just because i didn't -- i'm ignorant. i didn't know about it. >> and you're an american. >> yeah. it was kind of like a 4th of july type thing. and the streets were like covered in like beer bottles. like everyone was out in the city and they were drinking and they were on lawn chairs and watching things. i'm like, i'm going to go for a jog. >> perfect. >> i wasn't really thinking about it, that there were beer bottles everywhere. like litter and like there's

lawns and there's just tons of like litter everywhere. i mean, regardless, it's really beautiful -- >> sounds beautiful, yeah. sounds like a landfill. >> it was just one day. they were like don't worry, tomorrow it will be all cleaned up. that's fine. so i'm jogging. it's like 6:00 in the morning, it was crisp, really nice. i had my ipod, this was great. and no one was around, because i think everyone might have been drinking a lot the night before. definitely not up at 6:00 a.m. and it was a holiday too. so it was a week of -- >> exhaustion. >> yeah. i'm like running and it's really great and i see this garbage truck out of the corner of my eye. it is approaching me and i'm like, oh, man, maybe they're going to clean up some of this trash that's everywhere and literally they're in the middle of the room and they inter -- and they swerve over on purpose

and they like get in the puzzle and like literally -- and i'm splashed with a puddle that like soaks me head to foot. >> that's a how do you do to a foreigner in their country. >> yeah, it was a commercial like you're having a bad day. >> and the northern ireland garbage truck splashes you. i'm glad you came back. do you have to go back? >> yeah. it's -- everyone is really nice over there. >> bring a super soaker of malaria or something to get back at them. >> yeah. >> you're working on a movie there with danny mcbride. he's a very funny guy. >> yeah. he's hilarious. like a medieval comedy. he has an english accent. he's kind of a braveheart hairdo. like with an english accent. >> he has an english accent in it. >> yeah. >> is it good, do you do an

english accent in it? >> yeah. >> do you worry about this? because it's nothing worse than when an actor has a bad english accent in the movie. >> well, we have a dialect coach who is really good. then also if it's bad, it's a comedy. >> oh, okay. all right. otherwise it's not? >> yeah, well, no, it doesn't really matter. >> this is a picture i want to ask you about. >> right. >> what's happening here? that's you and willie nelson. at a luau or something like that. what's happening there? >> that -- that was at the maui film festival. >> the maui film festival. >> mm-hmm. >> what is the maui film festival? i don't even know they had movies -- >> it's awesome. it's really great. >> is it really? >> it was a film festival i was very excited to be invited to. >> were you? >> yeah, because you know it's in maui. they're like -- so they honored willie nelson and then they gave me an award. >> they honored willie nelson for his work in film? >> i think it was for his humanitarian efforts actually. >> oh, all right. >> yeah. and then they gave me like, you know, an award, which i never really gotten an award before. so i was very nervous about the acceptance speech. >> oh, yeah. >> i didn't know what to do. i was like i'll look on wikipedia. like they'll know how to write an acceptance speech. so i write an acceptance speech in wikipedia and it comes up -- it has a list. >> it was there? >> yeah, it was there. you can look it up. and it's like start by thanking the people that are giving you the award. >> that's good. >> okay. thank you maui film festival for your generous accolades.

>> award, yeah. >> and then it was like funny anecdote. thank -- thank you, et cetera et cetera. so i write this acceptance speech and i rewrite it and i'm nervous about it and i have this picture in my head of like a podium on a beach. i'm like a podium on the beach and i'm like get up on the podium and like have my acceptance speech and then have room for my cards or at the -- the hotel stationery where i wrote my acceptance speech. i have room for it. it's like hello, everybody. but anyone i got there and -- then i got there and they say you don't say an acceptance speech. >> oh. >> yeah, i wrote it and now i have it and -- >> you have your hawaii speech here? >> it's like totally hawaii related. >> really? >> a aloha, yeah, i can't use it

for anything. i couldn't like recycle that. >> they might move the academy awards to honolulu or something like that. you have it ready. >> i think they should move it. >> not a bad idea at all. so this movie is getting great reviews, "500 days of summer". i haven't seen it, but i've been hearing from people who know more about movies that it's really good. >> it's like a little movie and it's really nice to -- we actually got shut down on the last day of filming for instance. >> why? >> we had exceeded our time limit in one of our shooting locations. so -- which is, you know, something that happens when you make independent movies. so it's nice to see -- it's like a little movie -- >> so there's no ending on the movie or did you -- or were they -- >> no, they cut out the sequence that didn't get shot.

zooey deschanel is here. jewel will be here later on. our next guest is an activist, an agitator, a former candidate for president and former tour manager for james brown. earlier this month he gave a rousing eulogy at michael jackson's memorial here in l.a. and you can hear him across the country on his radio show, keeping it real with al sharpton weekdays in syndication. please welcome the reverend al sharpton. [ cheers and applause ] you look great. you have lost quite a bit of weight, huh? >> yes. economic policies. ush's >> oh, is that right? you're not eating anymore? >> no, there wasn't a lot of food around. hopefully, the new president is bringing us back. >> yes. well, hopefully he is. thank you for being here. by the way, do you do weddings, have you married people?

>> yeah. >> i heard -- getting married -- >> we'll talk. >> that would be a nice thing. you gave a really nice speech at michael jackson's memorial. so nice, that in fact, i may be jumping the gun, but i want you to speak at my funeral as well. will you agree to that? >> uncle frank and i talked about that. >> what did you decide? >> michael gave me a lot to work with. you've got a lot to do between now and then. >> yeah. i probably don't have a lot of time to do it in. >> i hope you have time because you have a whole lot to do. you have to speak about someone's deeds. you understand? >> i might mow your lawn, i might wash your car, so personal stuff you can throw in. >> all right. >> i want to ask you, how long have you known michael jackson? or did you know -- >> i probably met michael around

1970 when i was the director of operational bread basket, that is around 1979. i was never his tour manager, i used to travel with him sometimes because he adopted me and he performed at a country club and michael and janet came to see him. that's all of us in the dressing room after james brown came off stage. >> what a picture that is. somethat is something else. so did you remain close with michael jackson? >> we'd see each other time to time and in the '80's when he got ready to do the huge victory tour with his brothers, there was a big conflict with whether he'd work with black concert and he said, reverend al, i want you to help handle it and we got pretty close then. >> you were on the victory tour. >> i went on the victory tour, handling how they deal with community groups and hospitals, things that michael wanted to make sure and his brothers to

their credit wanted to make sure that people involved in the community could see the show. it go to spend a lot of time with him and from the '80's and throughout the rest of his career, we always talk. >> you talked regularly and you stayed friendly. i've heard from people and people that know michael that he didn't listen to anybody, that you could tell him something, but he was strong minded and he really didn't want to hear the opinions of others when it came to his -- >> no, i think he wanted to hear everyone's opinion. i think he made up his own mind. thank a lot of people that -- i think that a lot of people get upset with that wanted to tell him what to do, and i think he was the kind of person that would say and do what he ultimately decided to do. he and talk -- i remember we had a battle going once, i didn't agree with what he said. but he believed it. he didn't mind taking a different point of view if that's -- >> what was that that you -- >> i can't remember specifics

but i mean, we didn't always agree on a strategy. >> see, if i had an argument with michael jackson i'd remember every detail of it. >> it wasn't as much an argument as much as a strategic disagreement. he's a great listener. i remember we met johnnie cochran the famed attorney. he and i met and he would listen to everything we would say and you would not think he was that great a listener. and the next meeting he could tell you everything you'd say and he'd say, reverend that's not what you said last meeting, you said so and so. he was a great listener and he had a way of absorbing it and then he'd come out and deal with it the way he wanted. if he disagreed, he may not tell you, but he'd do what he wanted to do. which he had a right to do, he was michael jackson. >> i want to ask you about one thing in particular, i wasch withing the memorial and this jumped out at me. >> i want his three children to know, there wasn't nothing strange about your daddy. it was strange what your daddy

had to deal with. >> now, when you say there was nothing strange about their daddy, i mean, here he is sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber. here he is in his pajamas at court. here he is with his kids dressed as cockatoos. here he is with his monkey. he owned a monkey, that's strange. here he is without a nose. here he is carrying emanuel lewis around this is something i have never done. here he is holding one of those kids over a balcony. he definitely has done some strange things. i mean, definitely. >> i mean, you know, i think if you get any iconic figure, you can find things that people can laugh at. i have done your show before. people laugh at me. i think that to just depict michael in isolated, bizarre scenes and not deal with the fact this man was a genius, he

created a whole new paradigm in terms of musical excellence, and for his children to only be given the photos of some bizarre -- i understand what he really did, the humantary thing. you know when he came up with the we are the world concept with lionel ritchie and got the superstars to feed the hungry, i mean, those are the kind of things people aren't going to show in pictures, but that's what michael jackson did and that's what his children needed to understand. [ applause ] >> all right. and now, his dad, joe jackson, has been very visible, he has been very vocal and acting almost as the spokesman for the family. do you know joe and do you think -- >> joe jackson is the father of the family. i know him. and, you know, people have their opinion one way or the other, but no one can dy joe jackson is the -- he started the group, he pushed them forward. you won't find a more dignified, honorable person in the world

than mrs. jackson. i think that, you know, everybody goes through these things about the family. this family has stood together when michael was in trouble, joe jackson and kevin jackson walked in the courtroom with him every day and stood by him when many of his hollywood friends that he made millions of dollars for wouldn't. if you want somebody to bash the jacksons, it won't be al sharpton. >> but you're talking about a man that michael himself, he said he beat him. and now joe jackson is saying no, i didn't beat him and he's calling his son that passed away -- he's lying. >> i got a whoopin' when i was a kid. if you want to have an argument with my mother did she beat me too much? i think one whippings was too much, but she thinks three was not enough. come on, you really want to deal with the legacy of somebody who sold more records than anybody in the world and you want to reduce it down to his father and some whippings, come on, and you want me to preach at your funeral?

you can do better than that, jimmy. >> my aunt chippy would take a wooden spoon and she would beat us with it, sometimes until the spoon broke. will you mention that at my funeral? i don't want her getting away with this. >> she gets equal time. >> no, she doesn't get equal time. only selected by you. i'm trusting you to carry out my eulogy for me and i think you're taking it a little bit lightly. >> well, what i'm saying i think all of us have had incidents when growing up that people can turn and twist any kind of way they want. what i was trying to do and i'm going to continue to do because i think michael deserves that is talk about what he did that we know that transformed the world rather than chasing around on things we don't know in his private family life. i know that family has stood together, i know they took adversity and i think that's a compelling story and the rest of the stuff, anybody's family

i have been there for a couple of times and i attended his speech at the naacp where he talked about the meeting we had with newt gingrich about education. >> i have a photograph from that meeting. here you are with president obama and newt gingrich. that's quite a threesome there. are you friendly with newt? >> it's funny, newt and i don't disagree with much, we probably won't agree that i was on your show tonight. but we do agree that the education gap in this country must be dealt with. >> he wants it to get wider? >> no. he wants to increase the level of educational opportunity. he wants to be -- to deal with the fact, look at detroit, where we have only a third of the students getting a high school diploma. this is an american problem. the esident talked about structural inequality. and what we're doing is trying to pull from conservatives and liberals to come together and say it's an american problem.

when you have other nations producing more engineers and producing more people from an educational point of view, just strictly based on education than we are, there's a focus that needs to happen from all over the world and particularly in communities of color and poor communities where we're not getting the right balance. so we have asked people to really deal with this. i'm touring the country. in fact, secretary of education duncan and newt gingrich and i are going to do five cities together talking about the need for education. >> will you guys have the same tour bus when you travel around? >> well, we're not on concert tour. we haven't gotten to that, but clearly people can go to national action network, people can go on there and see the whole policy and follow where we're going. in fact, i have to say i'm tweaking now -- i'm on twitter. >> you're tweaking? no tweaking is when you're on methamphetamine. >> i'm not on meth. but i tweeted -- i'm on
