county detention center with no bond. tonight police in anne arundel county are looking for an armed robbery suspect. police say the robbery happened at the wings and things peete pizza in the 7800 block of quarterfield road in severn. authority says the robber was armed with a sawed-off shotgun. he entered the store, demanded money and then ran away. it's not always the police spotting the suspects and criminals in your neighborhood. you also need to be on the lookout. to help you and the police, we put together crime checker. as abc 2 works for you, brian kuebler has more on who you should keep your eyes pealed for. >> reporter: abc 2 is working to keep your community safe. each week we're highlighting some of the most dangerous criminals in your neighborhood, hoping to bring them to justice. this week we're focusing on a serial bank robber. the fbi says this man robbed six banks so far this month. each time he hands the teller a note, implying that he has a gun. agents say as the teller is getting the money together, he tells them to hurry up.

the fbi worries that the string of robberies won't stop. if you have any information, call the fbi there is a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. and don't forget, you can see more of our reports by heading over to abc2news.com/crimechecker. brian kuebler, abc 2 news. and now for a look at tonight's top stories. a baltimore county family is suing for $40 million after their son nearly drowned at a pool. three years ago mary becker and her son james were in the pool at woodcroft swim club when he went under. paramedics used a defibrillator to restart his heart, but the 18-year-old suffered brain damage. the family is suing the swim club and brd pool management for better safety measures. brd plans to fight that lawsuit. the beckers are also planning to fight for tougher legislation in annapolis. the senate's top democrats says a veto on the health care plan won't happen until after the august recess. majority leader harry reed says it's a matter of seeking

quality and thoughtfulness instead of trying to jam something through. the president had been pushing congress to pass a bill before its august recess. tonight the towson catholic high school alumni association is hosting a fundraising at fredonia station. the baltimore archdiocese is closing the high school because of financial problems and low enrollment. a hearing is scheduled for tomorrow on a restraining order to block the school's closing. throughout the day, we've been tracking shower and thunderstorm activity scattered throughout the region. earlier this morning, some very heavy thunderstorm activity went right up 83 and over into portions of harford county. then this afternoon we had some thunderstorm activity make its way through carroll county, get to baltimore county and fall apart. but another batch of thunderstorms is now heading into the carroll county region, and also around the gaithersburg and damascus area. our forecast for tonight. pop-up showers are going to be around, and storms. quite a bit of humidity. we'll see a temperature about 78 degrees for the next couple of hours. but tomorrow we'll see a little bit of an improvement as far as

the pop-up showers. but we will see them. when? we'll tell you, coming up. an fbi official says new jersey's corruption problem may be the worst in the nation. the mayors of three new jersey cities, two state lawmakers and several rabbis are among more than 40 people arrested today in a corruption investigation. it started as an investigation into an international moneylaundering ring. >> this case is not about politics. it is certainly not about religion. it is about crime, corruption. it is about arrogance. it is about a shocking betrayal of the public trust. >> according to the u.s. attorney's office, some of the lawmakers accepted thousands of dollars in bribes for building projects. one suspect is even accused of conspiring to broker the sale of a human kidney for transplant. the rabbis are accused of laundering tens of millions of dollarss through their religious organizations for a fee. new at 5:30, it's very unusual for a president to take sides in a police matter. but president obama changed all

that last night. after his health care reform conference, the president said the cambridge, massachusetts police had, quote, acted stupidly in the arrest of a harvard professor who was also the president's friend. henry louis gates, junior says the incident was racial. gates was arrested after police thought he was breaking into his own home. those charges have been dropped. the arresting officer says the president was way off base. gates wants an apology. >> there will be no apology. >> now and ever no apology? >> yes. >> mr. obama's strong defense is likely to intensify the debate over whether gates was arrest besidety white officer because he is black. he set the standard for everyone in the news business, and today america said farewell to walter cronkite. friends and family gathered at new york's st. barthelemy's church to remember the legendary newsman. he died last friday at the age of 92. walter cronkite anchored the cbs evening news from 1962 to

run on wall street resumed today. the dow was up 188 points. the nasdaq jumped 47. s&p also up double-digits. hundreds of people will get some nice fresh food tonight, courtesy of baltimore city. the city hall garden is growing like gangbusters, folks. mayor dixon and volunteers from the city's master roll tear program picked eggplants, beans and fresh greens this morning. all the food will go to our daily bread to help feed the area's needy. mayor dixon says she hopes the success of the project will spur more green uses around the city. >> we have a lot of empty

the federal government is really worried about a resurgence of the swine flu this fall. plans were announced today to start testing swine flu vaccine on people. one of the test sites, the university of maryland. but the food and drug administration has to make sure there is enough to go around. abc's t.j. winick with the story. >> reporter: clinical trials on an h1n1 swine flu vaccine could get underway in two weeks. at eight test sites around the country. the need is critical, with fall flu season not far off, and with a swine flu virus surviving the summer. >> and it's circulating at the same time as the seasonal strains. and that's one of the reasons why we are pretty certain that there is going to be some important challenges with the 2009 h1n1 virus here in the u.s. in the months ahead. >> reporter: members of congress were brief this morning on the obama administration's preparations for potential swine flu outbreaks this fall. that includes vaccine trials with 2500 paid volunteers,

>> a slow steady rain over a couple days ain't going to half. but heat and humidity are going to be rolling in for the weekend. take a look outside right now. your shot from harbor cam overlooking the downtown area. temperature at bwi right now at 82 degrees. 67% humidity. wind from the east at 13. and the pressure falling 29.83. temperatures across the area right now, 75 up in philadelphia. 72 in atlantic city. up in york 81. 81 in easton. 80 in pax river. cooler in hagerstown right now. they're at 79 degrees. throughout the day, we've been watching this very intense area of low pressure. remember, we've been talking about the series of low pressure coming off the carolina coast, moving up the eastern seaboard, bringing very heavy rainfall to that section of the u.s. right now they're getting real heavy rainfall on long island, going up into portions of connecticut rhode island, headed towards massachusetts. some showers and thunderstorms also around our neighborhood. right now maryland's most powerful radar there is that one thunderstorm that came out of carroll county. got over to top of baltimore and basically fallen apart into light showers. we've got more heavy shower and

take a look. there has been another sighting of ilya the manatee. the report being confirmed by the national aquarium. ilya was spotted in cecil county yesterday by the town commissioner who took these photos. ilya seems to be moving freely between the top of the bay and the susquehanna river. the aquarium and the coast guard will continue to keep tabs on the animal to keep him safe. ilya swam here all the way from florida. a real treat tonight on dine on a dime. we are the first television station to be invited inside one of baltimore's oldest buildings to give you a sneak peek at charm city's newest restaurant. abc 2 news jamie costello takes us to the corner of charles and baltimore. >> reporter: we know the building well.
