>> people need to be careful out here. >> reporter: she heard the shot? circumstances she heard the shot. the moment she said she stepped off the bus, she heard the shot. >> reporter: they heard the round from an off-duty police officer's gun. according to police, the 33- year-old five-year veteran of the force was getting off his shift and in plainclothes when he was approached by three men, one armed, and tried to rob him. the officer fired his service weapon, hitting one suspect in the arm. >> one of the suspects was a teen at the scene by the officer. the suspect who was struck fled and we caught up with him at an area hospital and got him there. >> reporter: police continue searching for the third, a scene that looked chaotic to neighbors. >> to me, everything like a major shoot-out out here. >> reporter: not major, but definitely brazen. the suspects may not have known their target was an officer, but they attempted their robbery just two blocks away from the southern district

police station. with the station so close, it is a gutsy crime. but it is the second such attempt inside a week against a baltimore city police officer. it was just saturday when police say sean sinclair went on his rampage, wounding two officers, shooting one of them through the driver's side window of his police cruiser. sinclair has yet to be charged. he and the victim, officer jerome remain in critical condition at baltimore's shock trauma. brian kuebler, abc 2 news. >> and again, police continue to look for a third suspect in that case. anyone with information asked to call the baltimore city homicide department. police are investigating an early morning accident involving a medic unit in northwest baltimore. the crash happened at the intersection of sillburn and greenspring avenue. the medic unit had picked up victim from another crash and was headed to sinai hospital when the vehicle hit a tree. the hospital sent another medic

unit to pick up that patient. a baltimore county family has filed a $40 million lawsuit against a pool and its management company after their son nearly drowned. james becker was 15 years old when the incident happened. three years later, his parents are suing woodcroft swimming club and drd pool management for negligence. james suffered massive brain damage and needs constant care. his parent says the $40 million will help pay for medical expenses, but more importantly, they want to make sure that what happened to their son never happens again. >> essentially, we lost our son as we knew him. he is trapped in a body that is not his body. >> i did not. i've been drd's corporate counsel for years. >> reporter: an attorney for drd says the company did nothing wrong, and plans to fight the lawsuit. the beckers plan to be in annapolis this session to get tougher pool safety standards put in place. officials say metro is working with an annapolis company to design a backup for

the train control system that is supposed to prevent crashes. federal investigators say the signaling system that detects stopped trains has been having problems for a year and a half in the area where a fatal crash happened just last month. nine people died in that accident. authorities say the problem started after a piece of equipment was replaced in december of 2007. tonight police in anne arundel county are searching for an armed robbery suspect. police say the robbery happened at the wings and things pizza on quarterfield road in severn. police say the suspect, armed with a sawed-off shotgun, entered the store, demanded the money, and then took off. authorities in cecil county have arrested a burglary suspect for the second time. investigators say 24-year-old charles samuel hall posted bond on one burglary charge and then allegedly broke into other homes in elkton and chesapeake city. >> they took all my jewelry out of my jewelry box, and i was devastated, you know.

i was upset. >> deputies don't believe hall acted alone when he allegedly committed the string of burglaries, making off with more than $14,000 in stolen goods. they say he has admitted to an addiction to prescription painkillers, which may have been the motive for the burglaries. two clothing stores have a display that is causing controversy. not only has there been vandalism, but employees say they've also received death threats. abc 2 news delia goncalves with the story. >> do you find this shirt offensive? >> no, not at all. >> reporter: for most, it's just another message t-shirt. this one reads legalize gay, repeal prop 8 now. campaigning with the clothing store american apparel supports repealing california's proposition 8 which ultimately banned same-sex marriage in that state. i just like any campaign shirt or any other apparel you would wear, if you agree with it, you buy it. if you don't, you don't buy it. >> reporter: this display at the silver spring american

apparel location is causing anger, even violence. monday morning, a storefront window was smashed. tuesday, the georgetown store received a harassing phone call. and the following day, death threats against store employees. >> some of the employees are kind of unsettled by the fact that we are keeping up the mannequins because it does affect our safety here working. >> reporter: one employee spoke on the condition her identity be concealed. she says someone threatened her life. and she says while all the acts are frightening, the display will stay, and they'll continue to sell the shirts. >> we took down the mannequin for five seconds to move it and move it back to this window. but we will not take down this display. >> reporter: one passerby says the vandalism and threats are intolerable, regardless of your beliefs. news. the state has already slashed $280 million, and may need to cut hundreds of millions dollars more. the governor says some programs will be spared, but the money has to come from somewhere. >> plan to propose reductions from k to 12 education. we're not looking to engage in the sort of massive layoffs of needed state workers. we're also going to have to look at aid to local government. we're also going to have to look at employee compensation. >> the governor needs to sign up to $750 million in spending reductions by labor day, and he wants your input. he is urging members of the public to comment on the budget situation on a new website to find it. just head to abc2news.com, and look under links. meanwhile, the state is cutting more than $40 million from the university of maryland system. chancellor william kerwin is talking with the president of the system's campuses to decide what to do. the board of regents vote today

to allocate cuts among the institutions. kerwin will report back on how the cuts will be allocated before they're due to the state july 31st. yesterday we told you virginia was closing 18 of 42 rest stops because of a lack of money. now comes word that maryland will close two welcome centers because of budget cuts. sidling hill exhibit center west of hancock is now set to close august 15th. it opened in 1991, and has a four-level geological museum. one full-time and three part time employees will be laid off. the country bay welcome center in queen anne's county will also close. a spokeswoman says closing the centers will save $392,000 in fiscal 20th. so are you ready for the big game? more than 70,000 screaming fans will pack into m&t bank stadium tomorrow to see two of the biggest teams in the game. we're talking of course about football, not the ravens. as ac milan takes on chelsea,

you're watching baltimore's station that works for you. now abc 2 news at 6. >> dozens of volunteers rolled up their sleeves today to help improve an east baltimore community. a look now at why they took part, and what was accomplished. >> one, two, three! [ cheering ] >> reporter: a day of service in east baltimore as volunteers from aramark come to work on the community resource center near johns hopkins hospital. but you know, before you start any big project, you have to get prepared. and baltimore ravens quarterback dominique foxworth helped to kick it off with a unique warm-up. >> when you're ready to demonstrate [ inaudible ]

into southern pennsylvania early this morning. very heavy thunderstorms. very small, but came roaming through the region. right now very heavy rainfall going up into pennsylvania, and still some scattered showers left back to the southwest of us. it's all being caused by this area of low pressure. we've been telling you about the series of low pressure. this is the most intense one, with the counterclockwise rotation of air continues to bring moisture in from the atlantic atlantic. that's what is causing the heavy rainfall that is heading right into new england. if you're traveling to long island, new york, harford, boston, going out on the cape, expect 2 to 4-inches of rain in the next 24 hours as the system makes its way through. in the meantime, here in baltimore, we've got some scattered showers around the region. just out to the west of us, there they are right there. there is the showers that came through the baltimore region, kind of fell apart a couple of hours ago. some very heavy thunderstorms now making their way through portions of howard county north of d.c., and also south of annapolis getting a few little scattered showers. right now across the area, at the highland school in bel air, look at the rainfall that they had just this morning.
