we begin tonight a live look at the inner harbor in downtown baltimore. not bad out there but there could be some rain on the horizon if you've got plans tonight. good evening, everyone. let's toss it over to the weather center with a quick check on the forecast. emily. >> we do have a line of thunderstorms moving in. while they're not severe there's a lot of lightning so let's look from radar now, you can see that line of thunderstorms moving in ahead of a cold front that will be impacting us tomorrow. these storms are moving into portions of carroll county and will soon impact baltimore county. while there are no warnings with these, there are some thunderstorm watches to our north and southern pennsylvania

and still a lot of lightning with the storms as they move in towards the manchester area and the next half hour will be impacting baltimore county. i'll have more on what to expect for the rest of the evening and the rest of the week, coming up in just a bit. detectives have a lot on their hands after a very violent night in baltimore city. first the latest happened on urban avenue shortly after 2 this morning. a woman was shot several times while sitting in her car. she was in the parking lot at the clubhouse lounge. police are searching for suspects. the woman as name has not been released. just a few minutes before that, an hispanic man was shot in the back on foster avenue in southeast baltimore. the man died at bayview hospital and he has not been identified. and a man and a woman are recovering after being hurt in a double shooting at 1:30 this morning. both were shot in the leg. they're expected to be okay. the incident is under investigation. anyone with information about any of those incidents is asked to call police detectives at

this number. the latest now on that chopper crash on interstate 70 near hagerstown that killed four people thursday night. investigators are trying to figure out what happened. the pilot had 630 hours of experience. they will interview wilts and look at radar weather at the time of the crash. just moments ago, baltimore city firefighters put out a two- alarm fire on bel air road. we're told three build relationship with heavily damaged, one of those was a dentist's office. two of the surrounding buildings collapsed although there was extensive damage luckily no one was hurt. investigators are not sure where the fire started. the cause of that fire is under investigation. as you can see, those firefighters were very hard at work, even on their own anniversary. the baltimore city fire

department is 150 years old today and the city threw a big anniversary bash for the department. cheryl joins us live with all the details. >> reporter: goods afternoon to you. just a few hours ago the war memorial plaza was filled with fire apparatus to celebrate the baltimore city fire department's 150th anniversary. then came proof that a firefighter's job is 24-7, right in the middle that service crews were caught out to the fire we just told you about on bel air road. as it escalated to three alarms, more trucks were called away. but the chief went on as scripted, talking about the changes in the department over the past 150 years. technology has made tremendous strides arc how long firefighters to save more lives. chief didn't elaborate on the recent cutbacks that have created some controversy, but he did say their service is unchanged. >> appointed one engineer to assist -- put into service six

engines and a ladder. and 27 horses. from that point on, this department has grown and grown into 60 engines and 30 ladders at one point during the 50s. today we're down, smaller than that. but no more getting less dedicated. >> and the annual fire expo is going on here at the baltimore convention center this weekend some this event brought in firefighters from surrounding states. a plaque, 12050th anniversary plaque, will be placed at the firefighters memorial. cheryl conner, abc 2 news. tomorrow sarah palin gives up her job as governor of alaska. she burst on the national scene when john mccain announced she was his choice as a running mate in the 2008 presidential election. she created a stir of speculation when she announced on july 3rd she would not complete her term as governor. neil reports on what she's

doing on her final weekend as governor. >> reporter: alaska governor sarah palin is spending her final 48 hours in office sharing hot dogs with her constituents over weekend picnics. earlier this month she announced she was leave in the middle of her first term. blaming the cost and distraction of investigations driving her from office. critics say this is even costing the state money. but supporters say transition costs are a fraction of the $2 million the state spent on the ethics probes against her. the investigation centered on whether she abused her power as governor in the latest salvo recently leaked documents allege she may have violated ethics laws by improperly raising money for her legal defense. according to a recent abc news washington post poll, 40% of americans hold a favorable opinion of her overall, down from a high of 58. 54% don't see her as a strong

leader, and 57% don't think she understands complex issues. even so, among republicans 70% view her positively. >> what are her plans for the future? not even her father knows. >> i don't know. i spent two days with her at the river, and she is a good player. she didn't -- lead on what she wanted to do. >> i think sarah should be president. i think she would do a much better job. she has the peoples center. >> she'll step down from office at a picnic like this one on sunday. abc news, alaska. president obama continues to push for changes in the u.s. health care system. coming up why he says congress is now disclosures than ever to getting a makeover. plus, giant leap upwards of more money towards some workers being bad news for others. stay there. >> guarantee for two was 90

it looks like president obama will not get his wish to have congress pass health care reform before leaving on their summer break next month. but he hopes to push along the process as much as possible. abc's john hendren has the story from washington. >> reporter: president obama is struggling to achieve his number-one priority. >> i've been pushing hard to make sure we finally address the need for health insurance reform, which has been deferred

year after year, decades after decade. and today, after a lot of hard work in congress, we are closer than ever before to finally passing reform. >> the president has spent weeks promoting his views on health care reform on television interviews and in a prime time news conference. he urgened the house and senate to pass bills before leaving on their august recess, but it's become clear that won't happen. senate majority leader reid expects to resume negotiations on a bill in september, and friday his counterpart in the house reaffirmed his commitment. >> we're making significant and positive progress on the consideration of what all americans want us to do, and that is adopt health reform bill that will provide them with access to affordable quality health care. >> but the conservative blue dog democrats want to see changes in the current plans on capitol hill, saying they cost too much money. >> there are some republicans

and others that want to kill health care reform. that's never been our intention. we've always been about wanting to get health care reform done. we just -- want to do it right. >> president obama now says he expects congress to get a final bill on his desk by this fall. but it's not clear it will contain all the elements he says it must have. john hendren, abc news, washington. locally, more than 100 folks got free dental attention today. this was part of the first access to care program sponsored by the university of maryland dental school. about 120 uninsured and unemployed people got free dental care. the program is a unique opportunity for the dental community to come together and to make a big difference. >> and we've had over 100 volunteers, dentists, students, and dental hygienes -- and hygenists and students over the past two days giving up their time, and it's a beautiful saturday, and here they are trying to make a difference.

>> the goal of the two-day project is to deliver more than 150,000 dollars of patient care. the program nationwide hopes to do more than a million dollars of dentistry across the country. now the forecast certified baltimore's most accurate! here's meteorologist emily gracie and maryland's most powerful doppler radar. and if you're going out on the saturday night, might be a good way to -- bet to bring an umbrella. >> absolutely. we're not only seeing rain, we're seeing heavy rain, strong line of storms moving through but we had a gorgeous day. sunshine on the outside, what we'll take it tonight. we can use the rain. not at the inner harbor yet. looking at dry conditions downtown, starting to cloud up in the storms are on their way in. 87 degrees right now. it's been a warm day across the area. humidity is at 48%. and winds are variable at 5 miles an hour. here's how we stacked up today.

91 that afternoon high. above that average of 88 degrees. and we started off the morning a little below average, with a low temperature of 63. normally we're about 66 for this time of year. our record low was set last year at 59 degrees. watch the radar this evening. has not been popping up with anything all day, now we're seeing a line of strong storms moving through the area. not severe storms, but we're seeing a lot of lightning with these storms. not impacting the beltway area yet but just off to the west we're watching those storms push in towards carroll county, just seeing the rainfall this evening. a lot of light finger strikes there over 50 strikes just in the one region, and these storms will be impacting northern baltimore county in from manchester towards i-83 here in the next couple minutes. so watch for areas in baltimore county in the method 20 minutes to be affected by the storm and then coming in towards hartford county experiencing those storms as well. not severe weather, but still heavy rain, some strong wind gusts and lightning with the

storms. so you may want to avow being outside for the next half hour or so but we'll dry out later this evening. 87 our current temperature from dwi. 83 degrees right now in york. looking for cooling back behind those storms in oakland, only 63 degrees. so we do have a doled front well back to the west, sealing what we call outflow boundaries ahead of the cold front where the cold air is pushing out causing severe storms. to pop up ahead of the cold front. we're not going to see the cold front until tomorrow afternoon, so look for some unsettled weather before that, tonight we're not going to see a lot as far as stormy activity after the initial storms push through by but tomorrow afternoon as the front pushes through we'll look for severe weather possibilities. once again that severe weather will stick around all week very many a stormy week ahead. 70 degrees not cooling off a lot tonight, isolated storms good possibility. during the overnight hours, not looking fork a huge cooldown

tonight, not like last night. then another warm day tomorrow. 89 degrees will be seen partly cloudy skies, evening showers and thunderstorms as that cold front passes through the area. the next 7 days looking wet out there. warm as well. so a muggy week ahead. we'll look for highs in the mid- 80s on monday, once the front passes so that slight cooldown but right back up to the upper 80s, and even 90 degrees by wednesday, as stormy weather will continue all the way through until next weekends. let's go sports now with rick white. rick white here with your sports. after last night's chelsea movie milan football match, i have a new respect for the sport. these are some of the best athletes in the world. the game is physical. and the ball handling is precise. and and being right on the field you get to see it up close and personal. but last night, it really wasn't about the game.

game. so i think it's very exciting. >> this is exciting and very international. >> and [speaking in spanish] >> she says, chelsea, so it's time to clean up because this game attracted some very big names, like ravens owner steve and nba superstar carmelo anthony. >> good to have a sport like this being held in my backyard some it's a good look for the city, it's a good look for the united states and for the -- federation of soccer. >> this was definitely a day to remember, and whoever said baltimore was not a football town? speaking of football, wide receiver drew bennett worked foul for the ravens and now has agreed to a one-year deal.

the 6-foot 5 veteran of 8 years is looking to prove he is ready to play. after coming offer an injury last season, if he does what he as well as the last receiver from tennessee does, a lot of ravens fans and tennessee football owners will be very happy! last nit the orioles had their ace going. that's right, i said their ace. rookie pitcher brad burgeson. and he had a good game. with 5 strikeouts, including -- whoops -- this one of missouri vaughn, who went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs. but the game was about defense, elsberry robs jones and says, i should have been at the all- star game! after he walks, i mean scored, he drove in jd drew to tie the score at 1-1 in the 4th. in the 6th inning the sox were trying to pull away but you

some very good news tonight for the lowest paid workers. those making the minimum wage got a raise of about 70 cents

an hour. but economists say their gain could be a big loss for others. abc's tj winick explains. >> haircut. >> reporter: for workers like carlos, today's minimum wage from 6.55 an hour to 7.25 is a long time coming. >> i got my phone bill about to kill me. i can't pay it no more. i need this. >> certain lawmakers heralded the raise approved during the bush administration. >> 1100 dollars in the pockets of working people, that means money for groceries, for rent, for school supplies, money that will help with this economic recovery. >> but for many small business owners. >> it's very bad timing. >> the pay increase is a backbreaker, happening in a time when they can least afford it. >> does the rates go up, the employees who who get to keep their job are happy. but overall, either people get less hours, which impacts them, or they lose their job.

>> at small businesses like crystal cupcakes, the additional 70 cents per hour adds up quick. a company with 10 employees will pay almost $300 more per week. but for many businesses, it's not that simple. >> see they don't pay the government and go to jail, or have fewer employees. and it's sad when any employer has to lay off people. >> under the health care reform being debated, businesses would have to pay a penalty if they don't provide health coverage for employees, increasing the already skyrocketing costs for small businesses. tj winick, abc news, washington. another quick look at harbor cam, the weather looks good. but emily says the rain is on the way. she'll have the forecast coming up.
