enough. >> reporter: route 32 in sykesville. colette miller calls it a danger zone. >> extremely frightening. every day frightening. >> reporter: last month her daughter was rear-ended on route 2 while trying to turn into their amber woods community. for those who live on this busy stretch, it's not a surprise. over the years route 32 has become a well traveled road for cars and trucks. >> you look in your rear view mirror and playing that they see you. if they do not see you, they're going to push you into oncoming traffic. >> i've been in that situation myself, wondering is this car going to hit me. >> reporter: if you drive up and down route 32, any day your going to see new skid marks. >> reporter: last month a mother and her teenaged son were killed in an accident on route 32 and river road. >> it should never have happened. the state should have fixed this road years ago. >> reporter: the community has organized a group to make route 32 safe. they have made a number of

suggestions, including new traffic lights, more signs, and dedicated lanes for turning and passing. they're hoping thursday's meet willing be the start of many improvements to come. they just want the accidents to stop. >> and we want action. we want safety changes made to protect lives in our community. you have to be strategic driving on this road. and nobody should have to deal with that, just to come in and out of their own community. >> reporter: a big turnout is expected at tonight's meeting here at the west friendship volunteer fire department. state and local leaders, along with representatives from the state highway administration will be here. the meeting starts promptly at 7. in west friendship, linda so, abc 2 news. you may soon have to pay for parking in ellicott city's business district. the howard county times reports county officials are thinking about installing a paid parking system. another option would be to turn main street into a time zone. that would force parkers to leave after a certain period of time. right now maryland's most powerful radar not indicating

any precipitation around the region, and we're not expecting any, until later on tonight. here is your forecast for the next couple of hours. what we're calling for is pretty decent weather, partly cloudy, on the humid and sticky side. temperatures will remain right about in the mid 80s for the next couple of hours. but some showers are making their way into the region. we'll tell you all about it, and also take a look at the weekend, coming up. >> all right, thanks, norm. a disturbing story now. more break-ins at baltimore county churches. authorities tell us there have been at least eight burglaries at churches in the county since the end of june. police say there are no suspect, and only a few leads. abc 2 is working with police to help you catch criminals. we call it crime checker. in tonight's report, abc 2's brian kuebler has more on who you should keep your eyes pealed for. >> reporter: abc 2 is working to keep your community safe. each week we're highlighting some of the most dangerous criminals in your neighborhood, hoping to bring them to justice. this week, we take a look at a string of burglaries in the

glen arm area of baltimore county. police say there have been five in a little more than a month, and for some victims, they're losing much more than just material possessions. >> i would really like to get the disc. >> reporter: maureen nolan lost her mother to a sudden illness this past winter. but after a burglar raided nolan's glen arm home last weekend, she has even lost her mother's precious last months. >> that is priceless. and like i said, of all the material stuff that was taken, those are the two things that i would really like to get back. >> reporter: nolan's house was burglarized last friday. the crooks took material stuff, jewelry, a computer, a camera. but it's what was on that camera that matters. digital video and still pictures of her son's first baby. and the final pictures of her mother kathleen in the waning months of her life. >> you know, as a parent gets older, you always wonder

whether that's going to be the last time, you know, for the holidays. >> reporter: maureen isn't the only one who has lost precious memories. baltimore county police say they have seen a string of burglaries in the glen arm area, wall the same mo, in every one of the five crimes the suspect sliced the screen and crawled through an unlocked window. >> because of how they're doing this, the nature of how they're doing it, the time span, which is normally during day hours, and the fact that it's in the same area, we believe it may be just one individual. >> reporter: police have some leads, but schey say they need the community's help. for maureen, she wants and expects nothing back. not even the camera itself. she is focused purely on the very last copy of her mother's very last memories. >> and if they send this stuff back anonymously, i don't care. that would be the only parts, pieces that i really, really would treasure to get back. >> reporter: it certainly is the least this family could hope for.

in manchester. the white house says president barack obama does not expect his beer summit will be a mediation session for black harvard scholar henry gates and the white police officer who arrested him. the president invited both gates and sergeant crowley to join him for a beer later today. meanwhile, a poll shows most americans disapprove of the president's handling of the racially-tinged dispute. controversy over a plan to get homeless people out of town. is it a long-term solution or a quick fix? and witnessing a powerful tornado. the damage the twister caused. but first, we'll head outside for a check on weather conditions closer to home. head over to glen burnie, anne arundel county community college, where it is 88 degrees. ♪

cities across america are now paying homeless people to get out of town. they're getting free one-way plane tickets to florida, puerto rico, paris, and even south africa. plane rides and bus tickets too. and taxpayers are footing the bill. new york's department of homeless service says on

average it costs $218 per person for a one-way ticket. the cost of housing a family of three in a shelter, $36,000 a year. >> this saves the taxpayers of new york an enormous amount of money. keep in mind, nobody is forcing these people to go. they want to go. >> all we're really doing is obviously shifting the problem to another municipality. >> reporter: in the last two years, new york city has relocated 564 families by planes, train and bus. city officials say they only relocate families once they know what is waiting on the other end. a unique plan to help stimulate the economy. one businessman was handing out money to his employees. find out what strings are attached. >> we are not a flashy, glitzy downtown. but we're downtown with lots of personality. and dine on a dime. tonight we head to westminster and find out what is one of the menus at harry's main street grill.

sorting out the details of the grisly crime. charges are pending tonight against the suspect who is in custody. abc's lindsey davis with the story. >> reporter: 23-year-old darlene haynes planned to call her new baby sheila marie. she never had a chance to do that. >> this was the best case scenario out of this tragedy, that we have the child, and it appears to be healthy. >> reporter: the baby wasn't due for another month, but police say she was cut out and stolen from her slain mother's womb. on monday her mother was found mute rated in a closet in her worcester, apartment. >> i can't even believe this is happening it's it's not real. really so bizarre, bizarre. >> reporter: police searched local hospitals, knowing the baby would need urgent medical attention to survive. but they ultimately learned from one of the suspect's friends that if baby wasn't in a hospital, but a shelter. on wednesday, 35-year-old julie cory of worcester, massachusetts was arrested in plymouth, new hampshire.

>> some friends became a little concerned about how she got home so early after just giving birth. many of her acquaintances watch the news, and realized that there was a woman who was killed and missing their child. >> reporter: cory is described as an acquaintance of haynes. she initially faced kidnapping charges. today police also added murder. as far as the newborn, police say the baby girl is in good condition in a new hampshire hospital. lindsey davis, abc news. cleanup continues tonight after a tornado touched down in new jersey. people reported seeing a funnel cloud in essex county yesterday evening. the winds were strong enough to topple a silo, crushed two barnes, and uproot trees. thankfully no one was hurt. >> knowing that my wife and kid wasn't here, i really wasn't too curbed about it. everything around us can be replaced. >> busy cutting trees and clearing limbs from the roadways. one farmer says he lost at

least one cow calf that was picked up by the wind and blown away. and now live to westminster, where the baltimore ravens are holding a news conference to announce they signed their number one draft pick, michael oher to a five-year deal. oher is an offensive lineman from old miss. really, an amazing story. homeless as a high school student, he is now a multimillionaire. oher missed the first two days of camp, but will be on the practice field tomorrow. you can see ozzie newsome there breaking it down for us. rob carlin is at the training camp, and we'll have a live report, coming up on abc 2 news at 6. now the forecast certified baltimore's most accurate. here is chief meteorologist norm lewis and maryland's most powerful doppler radar. >> the damage that you saw in new jersey was part of the system that came racing across southern maryland yesterday afternoon, went up across the eastern shore, and then reintensified over portions of new jersey. thankfully we didn't get any severe weather out of it. and we're going to be breathing

over there. not much happening at all. again, very quiet tropics. but you know, we keep an eye on it to make sure nothing is going on. we'll update you every couple of days. in the meantime, our radar picture around the region not indicating any precipitation. unlike yesterday, when we had the very strong thunderstorm activity that went right up through the region right there. here in the baltimore area, very little rainfall until late last night when one shower came right down the i-70 corridor. temperature-wise in monk ton 84. eldersburg 86 degrees. up in northeast 86. chestertown 88 degrees. and annapolis right now at 84. as far as our forecast for tonight, there are some showers out to the west of us, overnight, like late tonight. they will start pulling in our direction. and we'll see some scattered showers here in the baltimore area, from midnight on. and then during the day tomorrow, showers on and off throughout the day, could see some thunderstorm activity. lasting into early saturday morning. but then saturday during the day, a pretty decent day. and this decent weather is going to continue through sunday. but sunday night, the showers move back in.

here so your forecast for the overnight period. increasing clouds, showers moving in after midnight. we'll see an overnight low of 70 degrees. tomorrow a mostly cloudy day scattered showers and maybe even a few thunderstorms with a high of 85 degrees. the extended outlook there is the scattered showers tomorrow. now on saturday, pretty decent day. partly cloudy to mostly sunny with a high of 87 degrees. sunny is going to be a nice day. but sunday night into monday morning, we could see a shower develop. and then it will clear up during the day on monday. tuesday also a nice day. but some showers move in tuesday night into wednesday, and thursday partly cloudy and 84. the next couple of days again on the warm and humid side. we'll be back at 6 with more on the weather. a california businessman has come up with a unique plan to help stimulate his local economy. he is passing out $50 to each of his employees. the catch, they must spend the cash at small businesses where they live. the painting company owner has already handed out, get this, $20,000, and says he plans to pass out much more.
