ride, you can't miss the sign warning you. workers are erecting barricades to cut down the three-lane road to just a single lane, in hopes of red flagging the practice of illegal street racing here. >> we're really happy they're doing something. >> reporter: nearby residents like carol have been calling on police to crack down on the late-night practice for years. >> it's a constant roar. it's drag racing. you hear the wheels peeling out. >> reporter: he says he is thankful the state is finally taking action. >> there was a very good sense of relief. we've been working with officials for a listening time to get something done. and unfortunately it took a death or two to get attention. >> reporter: five weeks ago, 21- year-old mary katherine abernathy of columbia and 21- year-old jonathan henderson of la plata died when police say a would-be racer lost control of his car while fleeing the site of such a race. >> we've been working with the maryland state police since that incident to try to figure out a way that we enhance

safety in that section of westbound i-70. >> reporter: the state highway administration will monitor traffic along the stretch of i- 70 from the park n ride to the baltimore beltway over the next few weeks to see how the single lane impacts responsible drivers during their morning and evening commute. jeff hager, abc 2 news. >> the state highway administration also wants motorists jumping on the interstate from ingleside avenue to pay close attention. since they will no longer have their own lane, they'll have to merge as they enter the highway. in howard county, people living along route 32 hope changes will be made to make things changer. the two-lane road in sykesville has seen its fair share of accidents. last month a mother and her teenaged son were killed in an accident at route 32 and river road. the community has come together to organize the meeting tonight to talk about some of the safety concerns. they say changes like new traffic lights, more signs, and dedicated lanes for turning and passing will make things better

on a road that some consider dangerous. >> with so many people paying attention to cell phones and other things in the car, you just pray that they see every single time. >> the meet willing be held tonight at 7:00 at the west friendship volunteer fire department, state, and local leaders, along with representatives from the state highway administration will be there. well, tonight friends and family are remembering two of the four people killed in that helicopter crash from last week. advanced helicopter concept employees jeff nordaas, greg tutor, niall booth, and a friend, kim felix, were killed when their helicopter went down on interstate 70. the crash, still under investigation. but a service for 39-year-old george tutsi on the is being held tonight. and a service for 48-year-old kim felix was held this afternoon in damascus. baltimore city police have made an arrest in one of the multiple shootings in east baltimore over the weekend. howard was arrested last night

for a shooting on comet street around 2:00 sunday morning. in all 21 people were shot including 12 at one barbecue alone. police believe the shooting on comet street and another were in retaliation for that shooting. baltimore county police have confirmed the identities of the three people killed in monday morning's crash in white marsh. the driver, lori ann cardwell and her mother, 62-year-old darlene cardwell died in the crash on honeygo boulevard. another friend, katarina morrison also died. they were on the way back from kentucky where katarina's fiance just graduated from army basic training. with mayor dixon's troubles essentially starting from scratch, some political analyst says the legal process could

abc2news.com. check out the right side of our home page, and there you can vote in our online poll. a white supremacist in maryland accused of killing a security guard at the u.s. holocaust memorial museum in washington is scheduled to be arraigned september 2nd. the hearing for today was canceled. yesterday james von brunn was invited on seven counts, including first-degree murder, killing in a federal building, and a bias-motivated crime. the charges will make him eligible for the death penalty. tonight a salisbury woman accused of luring a man to his death says she was not part of the plan to kill him. she testified that the three men also accused of killing brooks harman were inside her house when she arrived there back in january. she said she asked them to leave, and they did, but they later returned when harman was there buying drugs. they're accused of using duct tape to bound harman, who later suffocated. police in anne arundel county need your help trying to

find a burglary suspect. police say this man right here is wanted in connection with the burglary at the odenton sunoco last wednesday. the suspect apparently broke in through a garage door and caused some extensive damage to the business. police say the suspect has a very long ponytail and a tattoo on his right forearm. if you have any information, you're asked to call metro crimestoppers at 1-866-7-lock- up. and you might want to lock up your bikes if you live in baltimore county. baltimore county police say some prizing thieves are using stolen mini vance to move stolen street bikes. the thieves can't remove locks or chains from a street bike, they're trying to steal, they often steal a minivan to carry the motorcycle and remove the locks elsewhere. if parked outdoors, street bikes should be parked in a well-lit area. live look now from our camera at the inner harbor. look at that. nice boat out there taking a

you're watching baltimore's station that works for you. now abc 2 news at 6. >> it's been five years since a heavy snow collapsed the roof of the b & o railroad museum. it has been going strong since it was rebuilt, but some of the attractions have been missing. roosevelt leftwich has more about the painstaking process to bring some of the old engines back from disaster. >> reporter: it is state-of-the- art. state-of-the-art 1863. but that person who was buried under tons of snow during the storm of 2003 has been out of site for more than three years. after method kohl rebuilding and restoration, is now just weeks away from joining the

museum. >> it takes really 19th century skills and talents to be able to put together a steam locomotive from the civil war period. you can't order parts from a warehouse. >> it's one of the last engines that was damaged that day to be restored. three others are still waiting their turn, and they need everything from wood and iron work to mechanical repair. >> this is the first engine to be restored, everything from the iron work all the way up to the wood had to be replaced by hand. it's very slow and intricate work that has to be done by people who know what they're doing. to fix old trains, you need old tools. at 107 years old, this belt- driven machine is what you need to make parts that haven't been made for more than 100 years. they needed to restore the old laths and presses first, but in many cases they just winged it. >> a lot of it is just figuring out how to do it on a case by case basis. you have the -- you have to keep trying things.

we'll see if we can make it 5. temperatures around the area right now, winchester, virginia 81. 86 still up in hagerstown. 86 in dover. easton at 80 degrees. still 90 on the boardwalk down in ocean city. our satellite pictures throughout the day. we had some clouds early this morning, gave way to quite a bit of sunshine throughout the day. but we've got some showers out to the west that are making their way in our direction. it looks like the showers will be into the baltimore area some time around the midnight hours. they make their way into the region. once they get here, they're going to be giving everybody a good drink of water. it's all coming from the ohio valley. throughout the day, a very warm surge of air coming up from the gulf of mexico, with lots of moisture. it's causing shower and thunderstorm activity. and that will be our weather that we're going to be seeing during the next 24 hours. but then tomorrow night into early wednesday morning, the showers come to an end, giving us a pretty nice weekend. right now nothing showing up on maryland's most powerful radar. but later on tonight, we will be tracking showers, making their way towards our region. right now in moncton is 85. 84 at manchester.

84 in the annapolis area. across in chestertown it's 88 degrees. the forecast for tonight, the showers that are lurking out to the west will make their way into our region overnight and during the day tomorrow. we'll see showers and even some thunderstorms. then they'll end early saturday morning, giving us nice sunshine a few clouds during the day on saturday. sunday should follow suit, but again, sunday night is when more showers roll back in. the forecast for tonight, increasing clouds, showers moving in after midnight. 70 degrees for the overnight low. tomorrow during the day, mostly cloudy, showers and storms. the showers will end early saturday morning. and as you can see, what we're going to be finding on saturday is a pretty decent day. sunday a pretty decent day. but then some showers sunday night into monday. then tuesday and wednesday things are looking pretty good, if you don't mind a little light shower activity because we do need the rainfall in the baltimore area. hazy, hot and humid over the next couple of days. we'll be back tonight at 11 with more on the weather. let's throw it out to rob

in baltimore may be winding down. the number of foreclosures down nearly 22.5%. the baltimore business journal reports made more than 5,000 homes in the baltimore-towson area were in foreclosure from january through june, representing just 5% of all the homes in the region. that's down 11% from the last six months of 2008. the region's housing market is doing better than the rest of the nation as the number of foreclosures in some parts of the country still on the rise. as far as our weather, for the next seven days, we're calling for a pretty decent evening tonight. but showers moving in tonight, lasting through the day tomorrow. then saturday and sunday, things should clear up. sunday night some showers are going to be moving into the region. we could see some showers late sunday night into early monday morning. but then monday will be a decent day. the next chance for shower activity on wednesday. we'll talk again tonight at 11. >> that's it for abc 2 news tonight at 6:00. i'm kelly swoope. thanks for joining us. we'll see you back here tonight at 11. and remember, our news continues 24 hours a day on
