captions by: caption colorado, llc (800) 775-7838 comments@captioncolorado.com good evening, i'm cheryl conner. we give with a developing story out of northwest baltimore. a man is in critical condition after being shot by a police officer. authorities say the man charged at the officer with a screwdriver. police say officers walked in on the man robbing a convenience store early this morning. we're told the suspect was wearing a mask and he lunged at the officer with the screwdriver. the officer fired a single shot hitting the man in the head. the officer is a 34-year veteran of the force. the incident is under investigation. an update tonight in the investigation of a deadly helicopter crash on interstate 70 near hagerstown. turns out, the pilot had been warned of foul weather minutes before taking off. the preliminary report makes

note that jeffrey nordas spoke with an acquaintance on the phone about the fog, wind and lightning. the ntsb report does not state the cause of the crash. drivers witnessed the crash last thursday night. the ntsb has finished testing the train control equipment at the site of june's deadly metro crash near washington d.c. opinion ntsb officials say they released the area between fort totten and tacoma stations. they will now begin replacing the tracks in the crash area. metro riders should continue to expect delays on the red line. yesterday's storm in county was actually an ef0 tornado. it left a mile of destruction in its wake. luckily, no one was seriously hurt in the storm, but it was

the worst damage this town has seen in more than a decade. the national weather service says an ef1 tornado hit down in frederick county yesterday afternoon. we have storms firing up around the state once again today as we head into the afternoon and evening hours. we are watching the storm right now. it is just passing into glen burnie. brooklyn park, lake shore all seeing rain out of this system. in fact in laurel at our storm center weather net middle school, we're seeing it dropped a quick quarter of an inch, just like that. things cool down quickly. we're looking at 70 degrees for the overnight low tonight. scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible. back to you. tough times for the university of maryland college park. the university has decided to freeze hiring and reduce staff through retirement and possible

layoffs. the university's president says the school needs to cut nearly $15 million from the 2010 budget. the university will also add new course options, including masters level courses for aspiring professionals in an effort to generate revenue. president obama says his stimulus plan has moved the economy away from a dangerous ledge and several indicators including the stock market suggest the economic crisis may be easing. abc's john cochran reports. >> reporter: the bulls are loose on wall street. the dow closed with the best month in nearly seven years. the nasdaq hasn't had a jewel this good since 1997. >> you have to remember, you can get double digit returns when you are coming from such a low point, so the move is exceptional but it's in the face of double digit downward moves that we had prior. >> reporter: but could this still be a signal that the worst of the recession is over? the latest economic analysis from washington shows a 1% negative growth rate for the

country, much less than was feared. many economists are now looking for growth in the second half of this year. though the forecast is for a slow and jobless recovery. >> we're probably in recovery. if we are it's post modern. it feels like a recession to most people. >> reporter: even as washington is preoccupied with passing a health care bill, president obama is giving signals he would be making more economic news in the near future. >> even as we rescued this economy, we must work to rebuild it stronger than before. we've got to build a new foundation, strong enough to with stand future nick storms and support lasting prosperity. >> reporter: this coming week, the president will travel to elkhart, indiana, a depressed area of the country where he intends to deliver a message of hope built on the positive numbers in the latest economic studies. john cochran, abc news washington. still ahead, more fuel for the cash for clunkers program thanks to emergency action. it's still moving along.

>> what part of president obama's stimulus plan of the cash for clunkers program appears to be aheaded for trouble less than a week after it started, but thanks to action by congress it looks like it will keep rolling on. pam culter tells us how. >> reporter: cash for clunkers appear tiebz victim of its own success. the program is scheduled to run through november but after less than one week it's nearly out of money. that's where congress came in. just hours before leaving on its august recess, the house voted to add another $2 billion to the program to keep it going. the senate's expected to vote on the additional funding next week before leaving on its recess. many car dealers around the nation are pleased with the program saying business is booming. >> dollar for dollar, this is the best economic stimulus that the government could have put out there. >> normally, the day started about 9:30. now they are knocking on the door. >> reporter: car show rooms from coast to coast are filling

up with customers looking for a good deal. >> we were going to try to do something in the next couple of weeks. we thought we'd go ahead and take care of it today. >> the program offers up to $4500 for every eligible vehicle. the clunkers must be scrapped once they drive off the lot. first, the engines must be disabled so they can never be driven again. some members of congress called the program a waste of taxpayer money, but transportation secretary ray lahood says cash for clunkers is a great deal. >> this is the most efficient stimulus program out there, a billion dollars out the door in four days, $250,000, this is a lifeline to the automobile industry. >> reporter: pam culter, abc news, washington. >> for more on the program and see if you qualify, check out

winds will be not too bad out of the south 5 to 10 miles per hour. be aware, if you are going out on the bay, might be a little chance we'll be looking at showers and thunderstorms, especially late in the afternoon hours. high temperatures today sure felt warmer than 84 degrees. that's where we hit officially 88. 85 in york, pennsylvania, 88 in hagerstown. and 73 in the path of the storms. 73 in baltimore, 86 in easton. right now, it doesn't feel like it. it feels warmer than that because of the humidity that's building. it still feels we're in the mid-90s in easton. in hagerstown, it feels like we're at 90 degrees. no watches and warnings for the immediate area or for the state. they keep popping up here and there up to the north of us. we're seeing flash flood warnings for parts of pennsylvania in york and lancaster counties because of the thunderstorms. they're the pop up variety. what's happening is you have

the heat and humidity. things just get more unstable and atmosphere can't hold it. you get the storms developing that go through and dump a quick quarter to maybe a half inch of rain wherever they land aand they cool down a bit. it goes on its merry way and pops up somewhere else. temperature huff wise, baltimore 77, but look at laurel. you can tell they just had a storm pass through. they are quite a bit cooler that be, say, annapolis, which is still in the 08s. what we're looking at for the satellite radar composite, we have the cloud cover this' built throughout the day and the storms start to pop up. then we have a little cold front that is sliding through in the overnight hours. that's not when's affecting us now. it will affect us as we head into tomorrow morning. so by tomorrow morning, we'll be seeing that front approaching the region. it's gonna create shower activity.

as that moves up in our region, we'll be seeing storms firing up. they could be in the seerve veer to strong category. so be aware of that as you make your plans for tomorrow afternoon. herous your extended forecast. we'll have a lot of clouds around tonight. then a couple of pop up showers and thunderstorms are possible. same thing for sunday, especially later in the day. by monday, things look nice. we're looking at mostly sunny skies and no showers at least for now, at any rate. for tonight, 70 degrees in the overnight hours. showers and storms warm and humid. so not the most pleasant night for us. for tomorrow, 82 is where we're topping out. morning showers, afternoon storms and thunderstorms. again, they could be strong or severe in some cases. looking at the next seven days, not so bad for monday. not really looking at a good chance for showers and thunderstorms. tuesday looks good as well. wednesday and thursday a chance for unsettled weather going back into the picture. look at the temperatures. it will be muggy and sticky

not the suit. speaking of hometown heroes, there may be one in the making. steven bumbry recently got signed by the iron birds. so i went up to aberdeen to see how he's doing. when you are thinking about hometown boy does good, the name ripken may come to mind. but we're talking about steven bumbry. he's loved baseball all of his life. as a kid, he played in major league rocker rooms and on the field. but now, little steven is all grown up. his father is orioles hall of famer al bumbry. you can say baseball is in his blood. >> my dad obviously had a great career in baltimore. he was a big leagues coach and minor leagues coach and up and down throughout the system with the indians, orioles and red sox. i grew up around it and it's definitely in my blood. >> reporter: steven went to

delaney high school then onto virginia tech. he's now signed with the iron birds. he also knows his work has just begun. >> i've seen what kind of hard work it takes to come up to a system and develop as a player and eventually make it to the big leagues. you know that's been something that's helped me out. i've gotten huge motivation from those guys, and i look forward to being there as well. >> reporter: as a kid, he wanted to be in the big leagues. >> obviously, a lot of kids dream when necessity were growing up as small guys playing baseball and t-ball. i've had the dreams of being in the bigs ever since. i have taken my steps. this is a big step for me to sign a professional contract with the orioles. i'm excited about being here in baltimore and having a great opportunity to make my splash

in camden yard some day. >> reporter: for steven to make that splash, he needs to continue to work hard because with hard work and perseverance, his dream could come true. especially when you have baseball in your blood. if you missed the orioles game against the red sox, david ortiz didn't make a splash, he made a cannonball. in the top of the first, ortiz gets all of that and puts the red sox up 3-0. earlier, smoltz had hit nolan but in the bottom of the third, he hit back. the rookie got his tenth home run and ties the score at 3-3. jacob ellsbury loves playing the orioles. he sends the orioles with the 4-3 lead with that homer. he just kills us all the time.

now, ellsbury giveth and now he will taketh away. he catches that ball. lou scott says you've got to be kidding me. deep shot to center field and in the seventh, it was good night. kevin youkilis hits a two-run homer. he gives the red sox the lead for good. they go on to win, 6-5, and will play at the yard later on tonight. it's saturday and it's time for "did you see that?" >> reporter: when you are at a ball game, always keep your eye on the ball because you never know when you may get a souvenir to go with that lunch. at the canadian open, they have the get the hole in one get a free car. watch out. there it goes. bank shot and nothing but cup. there goes that sweet ride.

maryland" anchor megan pringle's upcoming wedding teamed up with the united way and ywca to help women in need. it all started with the scan of a registry gun. abc 2 news megan pringle tells us more. >> reporter: the last time i had this gun in my hand, ways with this guy, my fiance rob. this time i had vicki sharif by my side. this time we were going hog wild at target. vicky is who i need for the registry. while all of this stuff is in my name, none of the stuff is for me. >> we're here because we are creating homes for chronically homeless women. many this will be the first time that they are housed in permanent housing or a roof over their head and someplace to call home. >> reporter: these women will need a lot of things, everything, really. pots, pans, bedding, lamp, smaller cheaper things like cleaning products. you name it, they need it. what i want to do is get all
