dangerous high? neighbors spend the night outside to take back their streets. all that coming up next on abc 2 news at 6. >> now abc 2 news at 6. >> your neighborhood post office could be stamped out. good evening. i'm marybeth marsden. the postal service needs to downsize to save money, and they have come up with a long list of locations nationwide that are being considered. abc 2 news linda so tells us which post offices in our area could be affected. >> reporter: the post office used to be the place to go to send packages. and mail off letters. but now with the internet and e- mail, not as many people are doing it the old-fashioned way. and like any business, when sales are down, changes need to be made. >> customers aren't utilizing the postal service there is no need for us to actually be there. >> reporter: the postal service is considering coolidating or closing hundreds of post

offices nationwide as a cost- cutting measure. the ones that could be closed in our area are the branches in the east point mall, south point station, franklin station, mount washington station, and towson towne center fireworks for some reason they will still maintain their zip code. they won't lose that. it's just they may not be able to go to that location to mail their packages or purchase their stamps. >> reporter: along with possibly closing local post offices like the one here in mount washington, the postal service is also considering reducing mail delivery from six days a week to only 5. >> that's worry some. sometimes mail needs to come in a timely way. so i guess you'll have to start planning. for not having delivery six days a week. >> reporter: the locations were chosen because they're typically smaller and not as busy as the main post offices. still, for people in those areas, news of the possible closures is disappointing. >> that would be a terrible thing for our community.

i've lived here for 30-some years, and the post office has always been here. >> it's just a fact we have to live with, it looks like. i'm not happy about it. but it's, you know, life goes on. >> reporter: in mount washington, linda so, abc 2 news. >> the possible list of closures is under review. it will take at least a couple of months before any changes are made. and when was the last time you visited a post office? log onto our website, abc2news.com and look on the right side of our home page to share your two cents. baltimore county police are investigating whether the children victimized in the local pornography case were related to the suspects. john nicklas and shannon honea were arrested last week after police found cds and dvds and computer equipment in their home that showed sex acts involving kids as young as two and as old as 13. court papers say the acts were taped at the couple's middle river home, and an atlanta hotel. police are also trying to figure out if a third location

out of state was used. baltimore county cops say they're also looking into whether the children involve ready directly tied to the couple. >> they are looking more into the family aspects of both of these suspects to find out potentially are there children involved that are directly related to them in the sense that are they their own children? are they nieces or nephews? are they niece or nephews or friends? >> the fbi has joined the investigation to help find the identities of the victims, police say they have received several calls from the public offering information about who they might be. a man has been sentenced to three years in prison for traveling to maryland with the intent of having sex with a minor. 34-year-old patrick mahan . he was sentenced today. he contacted an undercover baltimore county detective on the internet thinking she was a young girl. a 911 call from a shopping

center in westminster led police to a suspect who had allegedly been threatening people with a knife over his myspace page. anthony palmreno says he left the cyber cafe on sunday when 20-year-old george arts confronted him and accused him of deleting the friends from his myspace page. >> like he came right towards me and pulled out his life in and started coming towards me and stuff. and i jumped back. i was really scared. >> maryland state police caught up with arts outside a grocery store across the street and they arrested him. according to court documents, arts has a history of mental disorders, and once set someone's property on fire in taneytown. neighbors, business owners, and police are spending the night outside tonight, fighting crime on their own terms. tonight is the 26th annual national night out. a night that neighbors join together to keep their communities safe. people are holding these events all across baltimore, and much of maryland, turning it into a party with bands and vendors

and food. the groups were also pass on information on ways to make the neighborhood safer, and we'll take you to a few of the events tonight on abc 2 news at 11. was breathing a little uncomfortable for you today? it's no surprise since this is a code orange day. that means the air quality is unhealthy. it is definitely ozone season in and around baltimore, and this harbor cam takes a look at the live conditions downtown, it does look a little hazy. during code orange and red, people with heart or breathing programs should limit their outdoor activities. the question is will the air clear up any time soon? we've got a few storms out there, right, norm? >> a few pop-up storms around the region. and the good news about the air quality, normally by this time of the year, we've had about ten code red days. and that just has not happened this summer. it has been a very good summer for that. but we do have some pop-up showers around. we had one little storm that formed up around the white marsh area, made its way up around 95. gave the people around aberdeen a pretty shower.

pop-up showers are still a possibility as we go through the evening. more rainfall, general in the like is on tap during the day tomorrow. we'll tell you all about it, coming up in a couple of minutes. harford county has a new way to find missing people. the county sheriff's department has joined with a group called a child is missing. the program uses technology to search for missing children and other people as well. once deputies learn about a missing person, a group makes automated calls to homes in the area describing the missing person and his or her last known location. the message includes a phone number for the harford county sheriff's office. maryland school districts are hiring fewer new teachers than before. it's not necessarily because of the budget cuts. school officials say there aren't as many openings for new teachers because fewer teachers are retiring, and fewer are willing to leave a secured job. money problems may force a baltimore tradition off the streets. the city's mounted police unit is in danger of folding after 121 years.

the city is making budgets everywhere. the amount of police units is running out of money to feed and board its six horses. police say the horses are more than good relations. they patrol the downtown area, and police say the horses are a true public safety tool. they're great for crowd control, and they go places that control cars can't. >> we can -- we sit ten-feet high so, we have an advantage. we can actually look into backyards and see if there is anybody perhaps breaking into a yard or doing something they shouldn't be doing. >> i really hope we find a way together to keep the mounted unit in baltimore city. it's important public safety tool. it's important for the police department. it's important future a big city that has big crowd events and the like. >> police are hoping that a private foundation can help keep the unit going by raising $200,000 by the end of next month. mounted unit was formed in 1888 to enforce baltimore's, get this, 6 miles per hour speed limit for horse-drawn carriages. baltimore county councilman

sam oxley says he will not resign, despite recent charges of driving under the influence. oxley said little about the case before last night's council meeting, but he did say he is not resign, and he will serve out his term in office. and during last night's meeting, the council introduced a bill that would put speed cameras in school zones. supporters say it's a cost efficient way to crack down on speeders. opponents say the cameras are just a way for the county to make more money. if approved, the cameras would catch people driving at least more than 12 miles per hour over the speed limit. the plan is to build a new light rail line linking east and west baltimore. but it won't happen without a fight. coming up, angry voices on the red line as governor o'malley pushes to get the train through town. and ocean city makes an herb illegal, even though the state won't. we'll show you why so many people say salvia is a legal high that is too dangerous to sell. and yesterday i gave you a 2-degree guarantee for today of 91 degrees.

you're watching baltimore's station that works for you. now abc 2 news at 6. >> the project is controversial, and there will be a fight for federal funding. but governor martin o'malley says he supports the red line light rail project through baltimore. the governor rode the marc train up from prince george's county where he announced funding for another project. the red line calls for a 14- mile track running east to west from johns hopkins bayview medical center to woodlawn. the project has seen its share of opposition, and today was no

we've got to get to 89 to make the guarantee. we're one degree short, but still got to get all the data in. we'll talk about it tonight at 11:00. as far as the temperatures right now, they have fallen off 1 degree, 87. winchester, virginia 84 degrees. 87 on the boardwalk in ocean city. dover at 81. and 86 over in easton. our satellite picture throughout the day. lots of sunshine. a lot of humidity. a lot of heat. afternoon clouds making their way into the region. it looks a lot worse than what it actually is. not total overcast. but very heavy rainfall in the ohio valley. that's what caused the flooding in portions of louisville, kentucky where they have lad to shut down part of the city. watch the storm bang right through the area. it has made its way all the way into the tennessee area. it's moving very rapidly. now this whole batch of clouds that you see, that's going to make its way on towards the east. that's what we're going to see during the day tomorrow. a mostly cloudy day with scattered showers and thunderstorms. but the heavy activity will pass into the carolinas and not bother us. we have had our share of a few

scattered showers around the region making their way up the i-95 corridor. there is that one little system right there. some more showers right here making their way through winchester, virginia, and there has also been scattered showers on the eastern shore in southern portions of delaware and right here going across delaware bay into portions of new jersey. but again, very spotty shower activity on and off. the showers will be more general tomorrow. you can always good to our website, check out our interactive radar at abc2news.com. right now no showers around our region. but when we kind of zoom back in again you do this at home in your own computer. log onto our website, click on the weather tab, and you can kind of mosey around. there is some showers out there. portions of west virginia. and mountainous areas of virginia. try to make their way on towards the east. but not a whole lot happening out there right now. as far as our forecast for this evening, we'll see a few clouds, and then a pretty decent evening going on tonight. tomorrow showers and thunderstorms make their way into the region. the same kind of situation on
