i want to start with the heat advisory. that means temperatures will be up in the mid-90s, feeling bike 105. , keep in mind, keep cool, light colored clothing, stay out of the heat as much as possible. plenty of fluid for pets and check on the elderly. some things may seem commonplace and mundane but just a reminder. noon to 3:00 p.m., heat advisory. any time we have the heat index value shooting well over 100. 73 easton. ocean city 79. not much escaping from the heat though the water temperatures are in the 60s. we'll hit 91 by lunchtime. this afternoon, again, our 95-degree two-degree guarantee is actually going to be receiving because it will feel like 100 to 105. that is the dangerous level and that is why we're trying to urge all the caution possible if you don't have air conditioning in your house find a lane library, store, movie theetder, even grocery store,

hang out in the produce section or dairy aisle. i do that. even open up the doors for the freezer section just to cool off. 6:31. let's see what's happening on the roads with kim. >> you have a very smooth commute as you make your way southbound on 95. through howard county headed towards the capitol beltway as you see traffic is moving along without problems. if we are in the city, however, a couple issues, with road closures at key intersection, charles street remains closed at this hour between west centre street and west reed street because of road work. that will reopen at 7:00 a.m. until then use calvert street as an alternate. herring court between east pratt and goff streets is closed. try bond street as an the that the -- alternate. pulaski highway and joppa road, there's debris in the highway. and walkerville, route 194 at deer run road, that crash blocks the right lane. jfx at northern parkway, you can see traffic moving without problems as you make your way

southbound headed downtown. back to you. we've been swamped from e-mails at both sides. >> the lines have been drawn. you can always expect a big crowd when this happens. tonight they will be there for senator ben cardin's health care town hall meeting. roosevelt leftwich is live at towson university with what to expect. >> reporter: what you can expect pretty much is that it's going to be a doozy. here's why -- president obama's plan to change around the health care system is drawing fire from both sides of the issue, even moso there's an -- more so there's anger at what many are calling the biggest mistake in the country's history. protesters have been showing up at the meeting outraged by what many are calling the administration's attempts to "socialize medicine." many say that cardin is only allowing people on his mailing list to ask people and speak and not people critical of the measure. the president says he wants

members of congress to hold these meetings directly to talk to the public, however, many saying their voice is not being heard. here's a meeting in another part of the country. >> my biggest fear is this is going to get rammed down our throats. >> i think we should be able to make our own medical decisions. i don't want the government making decisions for me or my children or grandchildren. >> reporter: this meeting will be held once again here tonight at 7:00, starting at 7:00 at towson university. however, it is expected to be packed with people both for and against the health care plan. so you may want to get here early. the doors open at 6:00. so far two protests are scheduled for this. for and against. that is going to be even before the meeting starts. it will be a hot time here at towson coming up tonight. reporting live, roosevelt leftwich, abc2 news. president obama is in guadalajara, mexico, this morning for the north american leaders summit. the so-called three amigos summit. america's first and third

largest trade relationships are with the two countries and the men want to make sure their relationship stays strong despite difficulties with swine flu, drug cartels, glitches and the economy. emily schmidt is in washington with the details. >> reporter: president barack obama's summit with mexican and canadian leaders marks his first three-way meeting with the united states's closest neighbor. that geographical proximity means the h1n1 swine flu virus tops the summit agenda. the outbreak which is now a global pandemic started in mexico. >> i think everybody recognizes that h1n1 is going to be a challenge for all of us and there are people who are going to be getting sick in the fall and die. >> reporter: borders also prompt talks about drug cartels. the violence leads to dozens of kills in mexico a month and cartels are spreading north to the u.s. president obama says he backs the mexican president's fight against the drug war. >> we have responsibilities to reduce the trafficking of guns

into the south, that help strengthen these cartels. and the flows of money and money laundering. >> reporter: also on the agenda, an unsettled economy-induced trucking dispute. this spring president obama signed a bill which blocked mexican trucks from entering the country because of safety concerns. in return mexico imposed more than $2 billion of tariffs on u.s. goods. >> allowing mexican long haul trucking into our country is going to diminish safety on the highways. >> reporter: the trip marks mr. obama's second presidential visit to mexico. the two-day summit wraps up this afternoon. emily schmidt, abc news, washington. here's something you may not know. your dog is actually -- knows a lot. in fact your dog is probably as smart as your child. according to a canine iq test even the average dog has the mental abilities of a 2-year-old. that is found in a language development test revealing dogs can learn 165 words including signals and gestures.

it's never too late to go back to school. that's the lesson we're learning from a world war ii vet who can now say he's a high school graduate. his son on graduation say said i have something you don't. he decided to go back to school. he says it sends a message to younger generations. >> i think it has a message for younger people, too.

as human testing for the h1n1 vaccine begins. that and more up to gma time at 7:00. but first let's start with maryland's most powerful doppler radar and justin berk. >> we may have an isolated shower popping up this afternoon. we sound the all clear, all dry now. just a little fog up 95 in harford and cecil county where you had a storm roll through yesterday evening. look at downtown baltimore. we're blowing the clouds out, hazy sun coming up and 80 already on the thermometer. feeling like 83. it's not even 7:00 in the morning. look at this, 78 degrees and training camp begins before 9:00, smart? 78 degrees, feel like 8 2 in westminster. at the beach, 76 rehoboth. water temperature there 67. that sounds wonderful. storms that blew through harford, cecil county, off the coast. storms in new york and upstate new york. there's the storm track to the north as we have this hot dry

wind, it's plain hot, maybe an isolated shower popping up this afternoon but the better chance of that will be up in new york. another chance of some of the storms trying to fire up tomorrow afternoon and breaking the heat by the second half of the week. no record today, 95 with a heat advisory making it feel like 105. please be safe outside. let's see what's happening on the roads with kim. >> we have volume building on the beltway with a little bit of slowing in some of the usual trouble spots like at liberty road as you approach the route 70 interchange. heavy volume reported on the east side of the beltway between whitemarsh boulevard and providence road, there as well. we also have intersections closed in the city that you should be aware of. charles street remains closed between west centre street and west reed street because of road work. however, that will reopen around 7:00 a.m. until then use calvert street as an alternate. herring court between east pratt and goff streets is closed for police investigation. an object is reported on the roadway eastbound pulaski highway after joppa road. use caution.

in essex, word of a crash at mace avenue and stillwater road. a look at the jfx at cold spring lane. we have volume building as you make your way southbound towards downtown but no real delays at this time. back to you. 6:48. we're well past the fourth of july but intect fireworks. people express anger over this proposed health care reform. >> tonight we get to see it live in our own backyards at towson university. senator ben cardin plans to hold a town hall meeting and well aware of what he's walking into. roosevelt leftwich is live with the big issue on campus. >> reporter: the big issue is health care. they are holding that meeting here at towson university and it's expected to be a doozy. here's why. president obama has been trying to reorganize health care to change it around and in some circles the changes have been met with applause. even more so there's been anger toward what many are calling the potentially biggest mistake ever in this country, is also mounting. protesters have been showing up at meetings, outraged by what

many are calling the administration's attempts to socialize medicine. already many say the format of tonight's meeting is barring opponents of the issue. they say cardin he is only allowing people on his mailing list to speak, not people critical of the measure. the president says he wants members of congress to hold meetings directly to talk to the public but as you can see from the video a lot of people are outraged by this. >> [indiscernible] >> i don't think opinions are changed in an event like this but i think it's important to have events like this. i know i'm not getting any answers. >> reporter: whether you are on the right of this issue, the left of this issue or somewhere in the center the meeting starts at 7:00, all are invited. however, there's expected to be a lot of people here so at 6:00 the doors open. there are expected to be lines here in the heat. we've also heard from two different groups that want to protest, some for, some against

will be out here even before the doors open to try to get their opinions heard. reporting live at towson, roosevelt leftwich, abc2 news. we have not felt heat like this in a long time but we're making up for it now. maryland in for high temperatures. so hot baltimore city declared a code red heat alert through tomorrow. they've opened six cooling stations to help beat the heat. many saying they are staying inside before it cools down. >> being inside all the time with the air conditioning and then that traumatic experience when you go outdoors and it's 20, 30 degrees hotter is where we end up with some problems. >> the six cooling centers will be open today and tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. each center will have air conditioning, waters and ice on hand. the city is also providing free bus service to help people reach the cooling centers and the mta bus passes are good for one free trip on code red days. some advice that bears repeating when things get like this. drink plenty of liquids, drink

water or juice, avoid alcohol or caffeine, they just try you out. wear light weighted acclothing or light-colored clothing. signs of heat stroke include getting confused, nausea, light headedness and body temperature with cool clammy skin. for more on the heat wave and list of cooling centers in the city, go to abc2news.com. it appears that quick action by a train operator prevented a deadly accident on the dc metro just three months before two trains did collide on the tracks. "the washington post" is reporting that back in march a safety system designed to help trains avoid crashes malfunctioned and that one forced the train's driver to use an emergency brake top so the train. this crash in june on the red line killed nine people and injured more than 70 others. a similar malfunction is suspected in both incidents. investigators studying the crash learned about the incident in march from a committee that monitors dc's metro system. the search for bodies in the hudson river will continue

this morning after a mid-air collision in new york between a private plane and a helicopter. nine people are dead from that accident. seven bodies have been found so far. the victims of set's crash include three -- saturday's crash include three members of a family, and five italian tourists. it will be several days before we know why a plane crash from carroll county over the weekend, the pilot, 61-year-old robert kochimba and a friend, 66-year-old lety williams died in the crash. they were both from anne arundel county and they crashed in a corn field shortly after taking off from an airfield west of taneytown. investigators say he was an experienced pilot. a local family says they plan on taking the fredrick county detention center to court. in the wake of their son's suicide. the 26-year-old inmate used shoelaces to hang himself in his cell but inmates at the detention center are not allowed to wear laces in their shoes. two county correctional

officers already face disciplinary action in this case. trials begin today for the swine flu vaccine. the university of maryland school of medicine is taking part in the tests. young adults and senior citizen volunteers will get it first. if found to be safe the vaccine will be tested on children. stay here on abc2, starting in 10 minutes, "good morning america" will be live at the university of maryland school of medicine to report on the beginning of those human trials for the h1n1 vaccine. the the same storm that left devastation in taiwan and the philippines over the weekend is now causing a lot of problems in southeast china. we want to see the water, look at this, rising, landslides, flash floods, from the storms forced nearly a million people to desert their homes. that number could rise as tropical storms head for shanghai. dozens of people in asia are dead or missing because of the storm. the number of people dead or missing in japan continues to rise after a typhoon slammed

the coastal areas causing a landslide, at least a dozen are dead, 10 missing. hundreds of homes have been you had you had in -- have been flooded. forecasters in japan expect more destruction as the storm heads north.
