for having a town meeting and for meeting questions head-on. i think most people in the crowd appreciate that. he handled it pretty well. and the audience wasn't out of control. it was just loud and noisy and disagreeing with him a lot. >> reporter: bea hodges is with the maryland taxpayers association, a group that is opposed to the plan. she was also at monday's town hall. >> i think government should be out of the insurance business. it doesn't address the reforms that are needed at all. like the tort reform. >> reporter: as questions about obama's health care legislation continue to draw fiery debate, it's likely future town hall meetings will be just as lively. senator cardin will be holding a second town hall meeting similar to the one that was held here at towson university. that meeting will be held on wednesday in hagerstown, and they're expecting a big crowd. in towson, linda so, abc 2 news. >> and wednesday's town hall is at hagerstown community

college. it's scheduled for 1:00 at the keppler theater. and now for a look at tonight's top stories. abc 2 has obtained video of last month's shooting of 5-year- old raven wyatt. today the suspect in the case, 17-year-old lamont davis pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder. police say davis started shooting on south pulaski street in baltimore. the child was caught in the crossfire. tonight she remains in critical condition. davis' public defender says the video proves he was not the shooter. police are looking for a man wanted in connection with stealing credit cards. the harford county sheriff's office says it happened between friday, july 3rd, and saturday july 4th in the 1300 block of cherokee lane in bel air. investigators say the credit cards were used at the royal pharmacy store on churchville road to buy gas. they were also used at home depot stores in bel air and white marsh. a man is accused of breaking into his neighbor's home and selling the stolen

property at a yard sale. police say the robbery victim was driving saturday and saw a yard sale in front of a home in the 800 block of reece road in severn. police say the yard sale items were stolen from her home. police searched the property and arrested david perticone. he says he lost his job and needed money and he thought the house was abandoned. tonight he is charged with burglary and theft. today the greater baltimore medical center got some much needed help. volunteers from the subacute unit at gbmc in towson volunteered their time to help patients. volunteers donated time in several ways at the hospital, including visiting patients, and one volunteer even played the piano. >> i think i relieve their stress sometimes. and it seems to put a smile on people's face when they walk by, they thank me or give me a hi sign. or they clap. some of them sing.

some of them whistle. >> in fact, there are plenty of activities going on at gbmc this month, including ice cream sunday socials and movie time on the big screens. good evening, everyone. i'm meteorologist susan schrack. things are hazy, hot and humid once again for today. and the thunderstorms are already starting to fire up, coming in out of the north there you can see on our live local radar, maryland's most powerful. you're seeing storms affecting hagerstown, and is there is also another large storm. it's pretty strong, moving across the mason dixon line. that's going to be affecting the northern counties in the next hour. as far as rain amounts, well, hagerstown when that storm passed through picked up almost .02. it can be a quick and heavy downpour. the wind can get as high as 50 miles an hour. kit be dangerous if you're in the storm. for the rest of the night 72 degrees is where we're going to bill out. it's going to be a hazy, hot one as well. mostly cloudy, showers and storms widely scattered. but be aware of them. there is the possibility of

that happening tonight. tell you how long this is going to stick around in just a few minutes. back to you. >> thanks, susan. a missing four-legged member of the prince george's county sheriff's department has been found tonight. a 5-year-old bloodhound named zoe ran off last wednesday during her morning walk. her handler says she slipped out of her collar while they were strolling in waldorf. zoe is a trained search and rescue dog and often helps find missing kids and adults. a person in d.c. was throwing away their garbage when they found more than just trash in the dumpster. they found a dog covered in cuts. animal control was called to an apartment complex on 9th street in d.c. last friday to recover a pit bull that had been thrown away. washington humane society officer eve russell arrived at the scene when she made the shocking discovery. >> when i started to pull some trash out, i realized that her whole body was enclosed in a black plastic bag that was sealed tight with duct tape. she had chewed a hole in the bag to get her head free.

>> what is most surprising is show howe good she is and how happy she is. she is the sweetest dog. >> she has been named trooper for her bright spirit and is now staying at the friendship hospital for animals. whs is offering a reward of $1,500 to anyone with information leading to the arrest of those involved in this criminal act. a pleasant surprise tonight. the stimulus-funded project to rebuild the boardwalk in rehoboth may cost millions less than expected. a spokesperson for the delaware department of transportation said they got a winning bid to finish the reconstruction project for about $4 million instead of the estimated $7.5 million. well, the back to school shopping season is underway. and some local kids were picked for a shopping spree at target. 25 children from the salvation army shelter were set free inside a target store in west baltimore to get their school supplies. they picked up backpacks, lunch boxes, and other necessities to

prepare them for the coming school year. >> it's cool, because usually my mother would get mad and we have to go through the whole line and list of supplies we need. >> reporter: but you didn't have to worry about that today, right? >> no. >> this is the one time in the year where kids are very hopeful, excited, and have an opportunity to really to allow their potential to rise above. >> the shopping spree is part of a partnership between the salvation army and target. nationwide, more than two thousand children received $100 for school supplies. it is a love story with a twist. the vampires that have captured the world's attention. more than 70 million copies have been sold of the "twilight" series. but now a young author is claiming plagiarism. and details on a car that maker claims will get 230 miles per gallon? that's what it says.

points. the nasdaq was off 22. the s&p also down nearly 13. well, if you haven't read the "twilight" series, you have certainly seen the books about everywhere. get this. a young woman now claims best- selling author stephanie meyers stole ideas and lines from a book she wrote years ago. meyers seems to be at the top of her game, but college student has come forward saying the fourth book, "breaking dawn" is not all herself. at just 15, jordan scott wrote "the nocturn" wrote it and says the similarities in the books are too close to be coincidence. >> it's difficult to look at something i have a lot of my work into and think possibly if it was copied, then that's kind of hard to take. i would like recognition for my work. that's really what i would like.

tonight the 5-year-old boy who survived the wrong-way crash that killed eight others on a new york highway was out of the hospital. it was diane shuler's van that caused the crash last month. the crash killed shuler, her daughter, three nieces and three men in another car.

according to an autopsy, shuler was both drunk and high. well, well, this is part of the mess left behind when a powerful quake hit tokyo this morning. one person was killed and several dozen hurt. a mountain of boxes with empty bottles collapsed, and the glasses shattered. the company has not yet counted the damage, but estimates more than 10,000 of the bottles smashed. secretary of state hillary clinton isn't known to lose her cool, but that's exactly what happened at a press conference in africa this week. as abc's gloria riviera shows us, it all started with a question about her husband. >> reporter: it happened at a press conference in the congo. secretary of state hillary clinton thought she was being asked for her husband's opinion on foreign policy. an interpreter had mistakenly translated a student's question. what does mr. clinton think through the mouth of mrs. clinton?

husband, i think anyone would likely to be upset. >> reporter: the misinterpretation was eventually cleared up. the student had wanted to ask what president obama thought, not mr. clinton. gloria riviera, abc 2 news, london. now the forecast certified baltimore's most accurate by weather rate. and maryland's most powerful doppler radar. >> just a little muggy out there today. >> oh, yeah. it still felt warm. kind of like a sauna out there. not as bad as yesterday. but it still feels warm, especially when it's been such a cool summer for us. let's take a look hat is happening outside. we've had this light thin layer of clouds that has been over the sun throughout most of the day. it's enough to keep us hazy and a little bit cooler than where we saw things yesterday. so we're only in the upper 80s. 87 degrees. relative humidity 57%. wind is out of the west at 8 miles an hour. we do not have any watches or warnings issued for the state of maryland. just to the north of us,

though, pennsylvania is seeing it. that is a flash flood warning in adams county because they have some pretty strong storms that have been making their way now into maryland. so be aware of that. there is a fairly strong storm that has just come through hagerstown. there is also a batch of them starting to come into the northern part of baltimore county, the northern part also of the whole viewing area really. anyone who is traveling up along the i-83 corridor could be seeing some pretty heavy downpours ponding on the roadways, and limited visibility. again, just the storm coming through hagerstown dumped a quick nearly 2/10 of an inch in that location. so just be aware of that as you're traveling. you could be seeing the quick, heavy down bursts. the high temperatures today 88 in baltimore. 88 in hagerstown. so it was still pretty warm out there. temperatures right now are down maybe a degree or two. 87 in baltimore. you can see where the thunderstorm passed through york. they're already down in the low

70s. 88 in easton. it certainly means it feels hot because the air is so juicy. the heat index is showing us as feeling in the low 90s. it feels like 98 in easton. you can tell they haven't had any storm activity yet. composite shows high thin clouds throughout most of the day across at least the northern part of the state that continues to spread across the region. we're seeing a little bit of thundershower activity. that is mainly to the north of us, mainly to the west. seeing it down to the south of us. therefore, if it's all around us, we're likely to see it in our area too. there is a big area of high pressure that is swirling around here along the atlantic ocean, off the coastline. this is what pumps all that warm, moist air into our region. things are a little unsettled, just because of the amount of juice, so to speak, in the atmosphere. we have a cold front that is right now in new york, that is making its way down into maryland. as it does, we'll be seeing that tonight spark a couple of showers and thunderstorms. then it is likely to stall out just to the south of us. what that means is then little

low-pressure systems are likely to form along that boundary and keep news the range for thunderstorm activity for the next several days. in fact, let's take a look at the extended forecast. you can see a couple of showers and storms tonight. wednesday looks pretty good. then as the daytime heating kicks in, you have the chance for showers again. same thing as we head into the day on thursday. it's when that heating kicks in late afternoon and early evening that the storms start to fire up. for tonight, 72 degrees. mostly cloudy, showers and storms around. for tomorrow, about the same as we saw things today. 87 degrees, partly sunny, showers and storms again possible in the late afternoon hours. and that's what we're going to be seeing for most of the rest of the week. thursday, friday, even into the weekend, and that unsettled pattern will last as long as that front has stalled out to south. it may take us to the early part of next week. back to you. >> thanks, susan. general motors unveiled a new program today that lets you haggle over the prices of new cars and trucks on ebay.

and speaking of new, gm is also launching the new hybrid volt. abc's carla wohl has more. >> reporter: 230 miles per hour. >> reporter: with great ceremony, general motors unveiled the gas mileage of its new chevy volt, a jaw-dropping 230 miles per gallon. that's four times what the toyota prius gets. >> having a car that gets triple-digit fuel economy we believe can and will be a game- changer for us. >> reporter: and fresh out of bankruptcy, gm needs a game changer. the volt, due in showrooms late next year, is powered by an electric motor and a battery pack, and can be recharged from a standard home outlet at a cost of about 40 cents a day. a figure that sounds pretty good, especially as gas prices rise. still, analysts say that may not make up for its expected $40,000 price tag. >> i don't think this is a money-saving proposition for consumers. because there is a ton of vehicles that you can buy that are a lot cheaper that still

get decent fuel economy. >> reporter: gm is also going online to ebay, experimenting with new ways to sell cars. say you're looking for a chevy tahoe. beginning today, you can go on the web and buy it at a fixed price set below the sticker, or do your haggling electronically. once you have a deal, you go to the lot to pick up your new car. >> i think it has great potential. and i think it's good for the customer and for the dealers. >> reporter: right now the online experiment is confined to california. but if it proves successful, it could be expanded nationwide. carla wohl, abc news, los angeles. charm city is in for a party. the boss is coming to baltimore. rock legend bruce springsteen will perform at the first mariner arena on november 20th. this will be springsteen's first show in baltimore since opening for chicago at the baltimore civic center way back in 1973. tickets for the show go on

well soon and very soon, thousands of children will head back to school. today baltimore city administrators gathered for a back-to-school kickoff. sheree johnson tells us the baltimore city school ceo rallied the teachers with information to make it a better year. >> reporter: it was a packed house at the murphy fine arts center at morgan state university for the baltimore city back to school launch. ceo school ceo dr. and dress alonzo was frond and center. >> it's just an opportunity to welcome back the administrators and set the course for the rest of the year. >> reporter: alonzo says baltimore schools are at a critical moment. the schools have made good progress, but he wants to become a model for the nation. his data shows attendance rates are better, a decrease in drop- out rates, and a drop in suspensions. >> the course is about focusing on every single child, and insuring that everything we do is about student outcomes, and
