little damp. especially north of baltimore we could have a little bit of patchy fog this morning. overall though we're stuck with the clouds to the north, a little break around the bay and lower eastern shore so you may have some sun slipping through around the bay bridge and near annapolis but otherwise as we climb through the 70s in a hurry we're aiming for only 85 on the thermometer this afternoon which is cooler than the last few days, because of more clouds and there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms developing as well. plan for that, take the umbrella and always keep the eye to the sky if you're outdoors at the pool and on the field playing ball with the kitties. 6:31. let's check the roads with kim brown. >> traffic is looking good this morning as we check anne arundel county here, route 50 at 97, moving along smoothly in both directions whether headed to the baltimore beltway or capitol beltway, no problems at this time. there is a disabled vehicle on southbound 83, that is going to be on the on-ramp to the inner loop, just use caution if you have to travel in that direction. still dealing with that crash also in pikesville,

reisterstown road at slade avenue. also no problems to let you know about at the tunnels either. checking the jfx at -- excuse me, cold spring lane, we have light traffic southbound towards the downtown area but no problems. if you're looking for a business you know you can trust let your better business bureau do the work for you with the ateam video business directly. log on to abc2news.com/bbb. back to you. 6:32. they shot miss shirley. >> that's all you really have to say. it's a shocking story. in her own home watching tv. abc2 news sherrie johnson with the shooting in cherry hill. >> reporter: this shooting victim was well known in the community and known as miss shirley. she was known for cleaning up the cherry hill area and fighting to keep kids off the streets. now crime found its way in her own home. she was watching tv in her south baltimore home when a stray bullet came through the window and hit her in the shoulder. the shooting happened 9:00 last night in the 2800 block of carver hill road in cherry hill. police responded to the a call

of shots in the area and a few minutes later they received another call of a woman shot. neighbors say several men were out in the street and at some point fired a gun and one of those bullets found its way into the victim's home. >> detectives at this point don't have much information to go on. we're hoping that anyone with information can give them a call at 410-396-2499. any shred of information that can lead them in the right direction and help us solve this case would be helpful. >> reporter: the victim was taken to shock trauma with nonlife-threatening injuries. we'll stay on top of this story and bring you the latest information as it becomes available. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. a sad case of animal abuse that is now being investigated in the nation's capital. a $1,500 reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to the arrest of someone who threw a pit bull in the trash. animal control is called to an apartment complex on ninth street in dc last friday to recover the animal. the washington humane society officer eve russell arrived at

the scene where she made the shocking discovery. >> when i started to pull some trash out i realized her whole body was enclosed in a black plastic bag sealed tight with duct tape. she had chewed a hole in the bag to get her head free. >> what is most surprising is how good she is and how happy she is. she is just the sweetest dog. >> there she is. the rescued pit bull has been named trouper for her bright spirit. the back-to-school shopping season is underway and some local kids got to run the aisles for a shopping spree at target. 25 kids from the salvation army shelter were set free in a target store in west baltimore to get school supplies. they had $100 to spend on whatever they needed for back to school. >> usually my mother would get mad and we would have to go through the whole line and list of supplies we need. >> but you didn't have to worry about that today? >> no. >> this is the one time in the

ad for school lunches without their knowledge. that is not sitting well with the white house. the ad reads president obama's daughters get healthy school launches, why don't i? and the day after the ads were put up, a call came in from white house attorneys. >> they said you can't talk about the president's children. we pointed out that the comparison is really about the schools. >> the group says on several days earlier this year when sasha and malia obama's private school offered a vegetarian choice for lunch the dc public schools offered no such choice. the group's web site has seen a lot more traffic since the ads went up. the campaign is pushing for new legislation requiring more fruits and vegetables in public school lunches. >> i didn't know they would do that. >> you probably heard of an attack dog but this is an attack fish. people all over are coming to this chinese buffet in columbus, georgia, to see it firsthand. they are called oscar fish. when someone comes close to the tank the male fish jumps up and

6:44. 72 degrees to start in baltimore. cooler weather back to the west where they had rain and frontal boundary now slipping through central maryland. you can see the showers falling apart overnight. the frontal boundary itself is beginning to lose some of its punch which means it's going to lose some progress and get stuck here for a while. it may park here for a few days. showers erupting this morning down the spine of the appalachians in virginia, west virginia and we'll fill back in that line as we head through today, probably the best chance we've had in a while, then more widespread showers and storms. this afternoon, up across the northern portion of the bay, harford, cecil county, up through northern delaware possible, at least according to this one dc model, there's the line-up of showers along virginia and west virginia. that line in pennsylnia slides our way by the evening then more stuff erupts by midday tomorrow on in through tomorrow night. this afternoon, downtown baltimore, mostly cloudy skies, 85 the low end of our two-degree guarantee with some

sherrie johnson has details on the stray bullet that took her down. >> reporter: this morning baltimore city police are looking for the person who fired several shots and hit an innocent woman. she's known as miss shirley, was sitting home watching tv when a stray bullet went through her window and hit her in the shoulder. the shooting happened around 9:00 last night in the 2800 block of carver hill road in cherry hill. police responded to a call of shots fired in that area and just a few minutes later they received another call of a woman shot. neighbors say several men why out in the street and at some point fired a gun, one of the bullets found its way into the victim's home and officers say the community must work with police to stop the violence and protect innocent people. >> people have to take their neighborhoods back. i'm not saying if out and combat the criminals themselves but help us do our jobs. we know people know information about these incidents. and we're urging them to give us a call, with information on these incidents. the only way we can help and

solve these cases, by taking these criminals off the streets and we need community help to do so. >> the victim was taken to shock trauma with nonlife-threatening injuries. if you have any information on this case please call 410-396-2499. we'll stay on top of this story and bring you the latest information as it becomes available. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. police still looking for a suspect in an armed robbery and hostage situation we showed you from northeast baltimore. a 93-year-old gardenville man held in his own home for six hours monday, expected to be released from the hospital today. according to his son we talked with yesterday william dorfler was in his backyard feeding birds when a suspected armed robber grabbed him, carried him into the house and the upstairs in the upstairs bedroom. >> he was going to shoot him but he didn't. he had the opportunity but didn't do it. gun's up there. gun was in the bedroom, he was

in the bedroom. >> earlier surveillance video from a nearby gas station on bel air road shows two men, armed men beating a cashier and robbing the business before taking off. police later learned they were using bb guns and after tear gassing the home they arrested 26-year-old cecil bailey of northeast baltimore. the other suspect is still out there. maryland state police hope a newly released sketch will help them identify a murdered woman whose remains were found in carroll county in march. police say the victim is a white woman, late teens or early 20s with a petite build. remains found in an overgrown area behind a manufacturing company on baltimore boulevard in westminster. if you recognize her or have details on this case you can contact state police at 410-386-3029. 6:49. senator ben cardin will hold another town hall discussion on health care today, this time in hagerstown. yesterday fellow democrat arlen specter had a difficult time of it in pennsylvania. >> one day god is going to

stand before you and he's going to judge you and the rest of your cronies up on the hill! >> tempers flaring there. senator cardin faced hundreds of opponents of the president's health care reform plan this past monday night in towson. he was interrupted by boos and jeers throughout the night but says he got the message out that health care reform is urgently needed but said many of the opponents who turned out were not ready to listen. >> i think quite frankly there's a group that just opposes health care reform. they want to see president obama lose. they made it personal. i think that's unfortunate. >> today's town hall meeting is at the hate community college. it will start at 1:00 later this afternoon. it's a popular painkiller and seems it can fight cancer, too. colon cancer patients who took aspirin reduced their risk of death from the disease by nearly 30%. they still got some side effects including bleeding from irritation in the stomach and intense tins but some doctors say benefits farout weigh the

>> so police say the yard sale items were indeed stolen from her home and arrested david perticone. he told us he had lost his job and house and needed money. he said he thought morrison's home was empty, abandoned. >> i thought they were going to foreclosure and it was going to go to the dump or whatever. it was going to go to waste. i'm thinking -- i wasn't thinking right, but i think i'll get them before they go to the trash heap. >> woops. police say he took about $25,000 worth of stuff. he's now charged with burglary and also theft. more cuts coming as maryland struggles with a huge hole in the budget. annapolis got the news yesterday. furloughs and job cuts are on the table. outside the state capital a small number of state employees gathered to voice their frustrations. >> no layoffs, no furloughs, no cuts in benefits, no cuts period, because right now is the time when state employees are needed more than ever, when

there's a demand for services, is not a good time to cut. >> the governor's staff saystate agencies now have to take a close look at low priority programs and pooling resources including personnel. kind of an awe. he's such a good man. i know he saw me in tears that day. i know he was put in a tough spot. >> with so many people losing their jobs it's hard to believe anyone would leave intentionally but one teacher in north carolina retired early to save the job of a fellow teacher. he was close to retirement but wasn't quite ready to leave the position he had held for 33 years as a middle school social studies teacher with. impending layoffs he decided to leave the job he loved so much to pass the torch on to younger teachers and ensure they kept their jobs. what a sacrifice. listen, if you don't have time to come to baltimore and take advantage of restaurant week you still have a chance. it's being extended an extra week. 90 of the city's restaurants will continue their special
