chase. >> put 3,000 miles on the car. there were bodily fluid stains in the back seat. unbelievable trash. the dashboard was ripped off. the sun roof was all mangled. and the overheadlight was pulled out. the back bumper was missing. >> reporter: the car was taken to the kunz dealership in annapolis to be repaired. but because of all the damage, the weisss wanted a replacement. >> needless to say, me and my wife do not want this car back, there is no way we could ever sell it in the future. and it's tainted. >> reporter: the general manager of the kunz dealership here in easton refused to talk to us on camera. but over the phone he told us the company has done what it can. they repaired the weiss' car and made the couple an offer that they rejected. the offer involved replacing their car, but it also meant having to make higher monthly payments. >> it just feels like they're trying to profit from our loss because they don't want to take a loss, but why should we have to take a loss?

this happened on their watch. >> reporter: so instead of riding around in their brand- new car, the weisss are stuck making monthly payments on a car that has hardly been theirs to enjoy. in annapolis, linda so, abc 2 news. >> as you hear, kunz has repaired the stolen car, fixing the damage to the body and the interior. the couple was supposed to pick up the car today, but they say they did not, saying they weren't satisfied with those repairs. an escaped prisoner who attacked a howard county sheriff's deputy remains at large tonight. police believe he made it to his home in handcuffs and leg shackles. police resume their search today for 20-year-old devon champagne after a tip that he had visited his home. it's about a mile from where he jumped out of a deputy's car near the howard county detention center in jessup. according to the sheriff's office, a jury had just convicted champagne of felony theft, and he was looking at a lengthy prison sentence when he

attacked the deputy. >> he had shackles on his feet, handcuffs behind him. somehow he managed the handcuffs in front. at that time he put the handcuffs around the deputy's neck and strangled him. >> champagne is considered dangerous, and if you see him, you're asked to call 911. a 17-year-old gang member accused of killing a witness will spend the next 40 years behind bars. jonathan cornish was 15 years old when he shot and killed carl lackl in 2007. patrick byers, who is serving a life sentence ordered the hit from a cell phone in prison. lackl was set to testify against byers in a murder trial. >> i hope in time i can forgive him, and i hope he does do good. and maybe makes something of himself and learns and getting an education, and maybe, you know, some good will come out of it somehow. >> i'm sorry that jonathan did this. i'm so sorry, and i know that jonathan is too.

but this about how baltimore really is. the crime, the drugs, these kids. this has to stop. >> cornish apologized to the lackl family today before his sentencing this afternoon. a crash involving olympic gold medalist michael phelps was not his fault, according to baltimore city police. police say the other driver ran a red light. the crash happened at the intersection of biddle and calvert streets near downtown. police say the female driver was heading north when she went through the red light and slammed into phelps' suv. she was taken to the hospital after saying she had neck and back pain. phelps and his two passengers were not hurt. police say alcohol did not play a role in the crash. tonight police in anne arundel county are asking for your help in finding a robbery suspect. the robbery happened around 3:30 yesterday afternoon at the chevy chase bank at 2063 west street in annapolis. police say a man entered a bank

and passed a note to the teller demanding money. the suspect then escaped in a dark-colored four-door vehicle. eunice kennedy shriver was laid to rest today in massachusetts. special olympics athletes led this morning's funeral procession for shriver who founded the game. shriver was the sister of president john f. kennedy and senator ted kennedy. she died tuesday at the age of 88. today's ceremony was invitation only. shriver's daughter, maria shriver helped carry the casket, and shared memories of her mother, from playing football to wearing men's pants. >> at the end of her life, she was strong and vulnerable. she was tired and tireless. determined and also ready to surrender to god. >> family members and celebrity friends, including oprah winfrey stevie wonder also attended today. maryland health officials want to make sure everyone gets immunized against the h1n1 virus, or the swine flu.

the state health department will give those shots at most sites free of charge. some people might have to pay an administration fee ranging from 10 to $20. but officials say no one will be turned away because they can't pay. the state should know by mid- october how much vaccine will be available to the public. how would you help the state save money? governor martin o'malley has been asking for your ideas. thousands of suggestions were submitted, and today many of them, most of them were posted online. here are some. "do not change the voting system in maryland. there is no reason to change the voting system. in the state, this will save 20 to $30 million ." a charles county judge who admitted to deflating a tire on a car parked near a courthouse has resigned as chief administrator of the circuit court. judge robert nalley said he was sick of people parking in his spot at work so, he says he deflated a tire to get his point across. lindsey mastis has the story. >> really upset. i was almost in tears. >> reporter: jean washington says because of construction, she had been parking along this street for a few weeks. but when she parked there monday -- >> one of the security guards said to me, jean, someone from holding called over and said judge nalley flattened your tire. >> reporter: washington has worked at the courthouse nearly 13 years. she thought the restricted parking signs were meant for visitors. they are not. those who park here have a permit. >> the only warning that i got was that my tire was flattened. >> reporter: judge robert nalley has not apologized, and he wouldn't go on camera, but he talked with me before walking to his vehicle.

he said when other cars are parked in his spot, he left notes, but decided against it this time. he said, quote, notes are not terribly effective, letting air of tires is. >> and had there been a note, i would not have parked there. >> reporter: washington says she wants the judge held responsible for his actions. >> usually when someone has disrupted someone else's property, they are usually given a fine. i'd like to know what is going to happen in this case. >> the plaintiff's police chief says the investigation into the tire incident is ongoing. and while nalley has resigned as chief administrator of the circuit court, he is not resigning from the bench. some unexpected guests this week at a number of ocean city hotels and motels. inspectors from the ocean city fire marshals office looking for carbon monoxide detectors. the americana hotel was evacuated tuesday after high levels of co were discovered when three people became sick. an investigation found that the hotel did not have required

detectors. the fire marshall says the sweep of other properties was planned months in advance. we won't know the results until next week. but the americana hotel will remain closed until that investigation wraps up. now let's take a live look outside. a flag there just kind of blowing in the breeze. it's a beautiful summer day for the most part. wyatt everhart is here with a look at the forecast. >> marybeth, absolutely. you called it there. a beautiful day by august standards. temperatures mid-80s, that's not bad at all for this time of year. humidity is high, but we do have a bit of a breeze. kind of stir things up a little bit. keep it from getting too stagnant. 87 in hagerstown. 85 down at ocean city. we topped out at 8 in baltimore. the temperatures have not dropped much, maybe a degree or two in the last hour. clear skies, visible satellite. you don't see much in the way of cloud cover. you have to get way down toward virginia beach to find any active weather this evening. we're looking good the rest of the night. and an early peek at the weekend forecast shows it looks good all weekend here.

it gets hotter into the mid- to upper 80s tomorrow. and pushing 90 on sunday. hotter weather will hold into the early to middle part of next week. we'll talk more about that, and look at your forecast down at the ocean. all that coming up. marybeth? >> all right, wyatt. as most kids in our area are getting ready to go back to school, two local students graduated today. the 5-year-old and 6-year-old students donned caps and gowns. the school provides education to children with autism and other children with developmental disorders. >> a celebration of all the goals that they have achieved and the hard work they have put in. and that they're ready to go back into their community and be with other peers that are like them, and peers that are going to be able to really i guess be in their community with other people. >> as great as it was for the kids, it was even more important for the parents. one of the graduates is now moving on to public school. the therapeutic school at towson is part of the sheppard

pratt health system. another graduation in baltimore today. at-risk teens and young adults graduated from the baltimore youth apprenticeship program. the program helps students ages 14 to 21 learn life and career skills. this year the kids helped to restore a farm in catonville. >> today is their day to shine even brighter, and let the community know that they have made a commitment to transform and the transformation is that they have gone bringing the change in baltimore city. >> the eight-week program is a partnership between the safe healing foundation, baltimore city rec and parks, and baltimore safe and sound campaign. it's the weekend, be you can still expect some traffic delays in columbia tomorrow because of a concert at the merriweather post pavilion. large crowds are expected so it will be closed to south entrance road from 3 in the afternoon until 7 p.m. we're told you should expect detours starting at 10 tomorrow morning.

quality crab cake going. a gorgeous summer night for that. this is what we look for the friday nights where you don't have any rain. it's not too hot, mid 80. we're going to keep that going right into the weekend. a little hotter by sunday. let's take a look and see what we're seeing right now outside. and the answer is a lot of people having a good time down at the water. not just in annapolis. right here in the inner harbor. you can see the boat truck along there. i've been telling everyone, this is the weekend to get out on the boat there is not going to be a lot of wind, not much of a thunderstorm threat. that's what you want for boating. 83 at bwi. a little hotter than that downtown. and we're looking at just a real light southeast wind at 6 miles an hour. barometer holding steady. another sign of good, stable weather. great boating weather. and by the way, speaking of boating, speaking of the beach, a lot of people headed that way this weekend. give you a time lapse at rehoboth beach. still working on our ocean city scam. but rehoboth very similar weather obviously there, and 75 at the earth with a's edge. great times down there. by the way, if you're headed to

ocean city, it's going to be a great weekend for that. 84 degrees. saturday looking at 86 on sunday. slight chance for a thundershower both days. a little better chance as you go toward ocean city. and certainly if you're headed south of ocean city towards chincoteague, toward say cape charles and the tunnel bridge area, in that direction you're going to find a better chance for thundershowers due to a storm system sitting off the carolinas right now. we'll show you that in a second. high temperatures today 8 degrees from bwi. 85 in winchester. hagerstown closer to 90. ocean city topped out at 85 today as well. pretty humid stuff, but temperatures starting to drop off a little bit. we're down to 82 now in easton. and 83 now at bwi. satellite and radar pictures, boy, we cleared off nicely. we had fair weather clouds today. that's what we're seeing here. almost no precipitation. one straight shower in calvert county. we'll hoe you the weather-maker that will play a little havoc for some beach areas, especially as you go south of ocean city, again, down toward

virginia beach, the tidewater, toward cape hatteras. that's where we're watching active weather. but the storm system should stay not just south and east of us. but high pressure over here over kentucky and west virginia that is sliding steadily east. that should keep it at bay, just barely south and east of us. we're look good not just in baltimore, but toward the beaches this weekend. let's take a look at the forecast in detail. again, watch as we go into saturday afternoon. you see that weather counts for richmond. not much, though, across baltimore and ocean city. then as we go into the day on sunday, a hotter day on tap. i think we'll get a lot of sunshine early. a better chance for a pop-up thundershower in the afternoon. but again, you see the model picking up on most of that precipitation from richmond southward. so again, we're just skirting the bad weather and staying north of it here in maryland. bay forecast looking great again. i highly encourage you to take the boat out again. light east breeze. not even a foot of chop out there. sunrise 6:55 tomorrow morning. overnight tonight, looks like a

great night to head out for your friday evening. partly cloudy, should stay nice and dry. it will be muggy out there. i'm not going to sugarcoat that. sultry stuff overnight. about 88 or so in the heart of the city. a little cooler out towards the beach areas. but it will be getting hotter through weekend. into sunday we go, talking about 90 or so late in the afternoon. and hovering around 90 degrees for terrellly part of next week. but you see, not a lot of thunderstorm activity. so some pretty nice weather here over the next few days. on wall street today, stocks are down, but not as much as they had been after investors were disappointed by reports that consumers continue to cut back on spending. the dow jones fell 76 points. the nasdaq fell 23. the s&p dropped 8. the competition is heating up in harford county, and we mean smoking! the 8th annual maryland state barbecue championship is underway in bel air. all the grilling and chilling happens right in the courthouse parking lot.

52 chefs will compete in a barbecue cook-off. the event also features food and craft vendors from across the country. admission is free. the party goes until 10:00 tonight, and saturday from noon until 10. and if you love baseball, the cal ripken world series begins tonight in aberdeen. the cal ripken world series is in its 10th year. this year includes teams from japan, mexico, canada, and puerto rico. a total of more than 200 players representing 16 teams will participate in a night of baseball contests, including a home run derby, player parade, and skills competitions. ripken world series opening ceremonies are tonight at 7 p.m. the games begin this saturday. they will run through august 22nd. and the ravens finally got to hit somebody in a different colored jersey last night, and to make things much better, those jerseys were burgundy and gold. baltimore looked great in their preseason opener against the washington redskins. after two field goals, the ravens finally made into it the end zone at the end of the first half. troy smith connected with

we have breaking news on the accident last night that involved michael phelps. baltimore city police now say they will fight olympic gold medalist michael phelps for driving without a license and failure to establish residency in maryland. he was involved in a crash last night on biddle and calvert street downtown around 9:00 or so. police say the other driver, though, was at fault. the other driver they say ran a red light. she too is expected to be cited. we'll continue to follow this story on abc 2 news and abc2news.com. and now coming up tonight at 11, i believe? in this economy it's becoming more and more difficult for some retirees to access their retirement savings. tonight at 11, how it's happening, and what you need to know to make sure it doesn't happen to you. and that is all for us on abc 2 news at 6. i'm marybeth marsden. we'll see you tonight at 11. good night.
