a community activist hit and i a stray bullet while sit engine her own living room is more determined than ever to fight for safer streets. good evening. shirley folk suffered a minor injury but is not allowing that to holds her back from helping others. cheryl has more. >> reporter: collecting school supplies for the kids in her community has been the focus of shirley folks for years. her unfortunate situation is now a blessing for needy kids. every year it's a mission for miss shirley as she is affectionately known. use her energy to collect

school supplies for the kids in her neighborhood go back to class. but this time the giveaway had a major hurdle, which she calms a blessing in disguise. >> i think i got a little more because i got shot. that's what i think. but we do this every year. >> more community donations came in even from the mayor's office after attention turned towards miss shirley's well being. on tuesday night the 59-year- old was in her living room watching tv when police say a stray bullet hit her window frame, passed through the sofa, then on to folks. she suffered a minor injury, but she was determined to still help local kids. >> we were working on the project before the incident, so i wanted to put closure to it. >> last night neighbors held a rally to stand up against the violence. >> we just want to raise awareness to the fact that there are law-abiding citizens

in this neighborhood who won't tolerate gun violence. >> miss shirley has barely missed a beat and now kids have the supplies they need before school starts in just two weeks. she tells us she makes a plea to local businesses for the school supplies, police still don't know who shot her. cheryl con over, abc 2 news. president barack obama is on the road this weekend to drum up support to reform the health care system. john cochran reports from washington. >> reporter: president obama and the first family are out west this weekend, visiting some of america's most beautiful natural wonders, including yellowstone national park. but this isn't just a sightseeing trip. mr. obama has been has gone to balk about health care reform. he'll hold another health care town hall this evening in grand junction, colorado. an area that voted overwhelmingly republican in last year's election.

the stop comes on the heels of last night's meeting in montana, the president faced some pointed but civil questions about how he will pay for the plan to reform the nation's health care system. a process that has caused his once sky-high approval ratings to fall. around the nation, there's been negative feedback at many town hall meetings as average americans have questioned lawmakers about changes to the nation's health care system. in his weekly address, mr. obama says he wants the nation to move forward despite the challenges from opponents. >> the history is clear -- every time we come close to passing health insurance reform, the special interests with the stake in the status quo use their influence and allies to scare and mislead the american people. >> but in the republicans weekly address, utah senator hatch rejected the charge, saying americans just want the facts. >> although i encourage the use of respectful debate, we should not be stifling these discussions.

there's nothing unamerican about disagreements. in fact, our great nation was founded on speaking our minds. >> this weekend members of congress from coast to coast are meeting voters to explain 3 sometimes defend the reform legislation they're expected to undertake when they return to capitol hill next month. john cochran, abc news, washington. tonight connecticut senator christopher dodd is out of the hospital after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer. a statement from his office said the 65-year-old was released today from a cancer center. a spokesman says he is recovering at home with his family, the democrat announced last month he was diagnosed with an early treatable stage of cancer. he expects return to a full senate schedule later this month, chairman of the senate banking committee he also has a lead role in the health care system. governor o'malley says his budget secretary has recommended cutting $250 million in state aid to local governments. o'malley made the announcement

at the association of county summer conference. the governor says the cuts will affect local health services, police aid, community colleges p highway funds. o'malley is scheduled to bring more than $400 million in cuts to the board of public works later this month. if speaking of budget cuts, how would you like to help save the state some money? the governor has been asking for your ideas and today thousands of suggested posted online and here are just a couple of them. first of all, do not change the voting system in maryland. there's no reason to change, and this will save 20 to $30 million. and here's another one -- eliminate the use of front license plates. they're always being made and it costs lots of money for the materials and to manufacture these plates. to read more comments or leave your own, head to abc2news.com, the story is in our slide show. it's still the middle of summer but state highway officials have snow on their minds. they're jam bling to find ways to save so there will be enough

money to clear snow covered highways this summer. the economic downturn is not helping but they'll get the job done. here's an image that might make you feel better in august. to highway officials the plows mean one thing -- money. this past winter the state highway administration spent $52 million clearing roads. the administration gets its funding from several sources and they've all been hit hard by the recession, the sales tax when you buy a car, gas taxes, registration fees, and some corporate income taxes. >> all of those are down. most dramatically the excise or sales tax in vehicles sales is down considerably. >> in fact, the maryland automobile dealers association expects about 159,000 vehicles to be newly registered in maryland this year. that's down from almost 200,000 last year. even with a mild boost from the cash for clunkers program. that translates into much less money for the state highway administration, which is why the head of the administration

accept an e-mail to his agency heads calling for significant cuts in spending. >> we're looking at things like reduced mowing cycles, looking at things like perhaps not sweeping the roadways as often. >> highway officials say those measures will provide significant savings, but the administration is trying to find savings anywhere they can, no mattered how small. things like scaling back overtime, spending on office supplies, and even calling for reduction in the number of cell phone uses by 10%, all of it one goal in mind -- getting readies for something that is closer than we might like to think. >> we will do what we need to do to make sure the roads are safe during the winter. >> and one of biggest budget cuts for the highway administration is resurfacing. several projects have already been scaled back this year to save money for the winter. administrators were not know when the projects can be completed until they see how severe the winter weather is. and a traffic reminder --

[not understandable] i think that's half the battle, to be prepared. second half is -- so i try to help as much as i can, whatever i can. >> the former archbishop spalding high school standout also played basketball with some of the students, which they really enjoyed. firefighters are working to get control over wildfires burning in california. find out what governor arnold schwarzenegger is urging people living in that area to do. and it was a concert like no

california governor arnold schwarzenegger urge el dorado people to listen to mandatory evacuation orders. this message came today as firefighters fought to control

nearly a dozen fires across the state. schwarzenegger met with firefighters at the lockheed fire in the santa cruz mountains. this fire has blackened close to 8 square miles of remote wilderness since wednesday. some 2400 homes and several wineries are under mandatory evacuations, and the mountains of communities of swanton and bonny doon. here's abc's pam coulter. >> reporter: strong winds could ignite more wildfires in parched areas of california. >> this is a little scary. because of the wind. >> we're very concerned about the winds and the heat that are coming in the next few days. >> the worst fire is around santa cruz. >> we have declared the state of emergency for santa cruz county. >> altogether, 2600 buildings are threatened by 11 fires in california. >> we have people around homes that are in the immediate area, where if the fire does -- they will be there and do their best to protect the structures. >> the state has mobilized vast forces to battle the flames but

battling them is taking its toll. >> over 700 engines and 68 helicopters, five shelters, and there's 25 firefighters that have been injured. and of course we pray they heal as quickly as possible. >> families are still worried that they might lose everything. some are staying and fighting. >> it's been wearing. we've been up all night. we've only had a couple hours' sleep. >> we can see flames and we could see it spreading so quickly because the wind was howling. >> the steep terrain and dense veg taking are making it difficult to contain the fires. pam coulter, abc news. and dramatic video of flooding in china, hay rains triggered landslides, destroyed roads and burst river banks. more than 800 people had to be evacuated from one province. the heavy rain and flooding is the aftermath of a typhoon, 11 people died and two were hurt.

wow, some powerful weather there. but we didn't have any. >> no, no. typhoon is just caused unbelieveable damage in the pacific. but back here it's just been quiet, really par for the course on the weather front. we've now hit that two degree guarantee four days running. >> yay! very good. >> also, i think we're going to see temperatures pushing close to 90 early this week, but not quite as hot of a trend as we once thought. >> keep those water bottles handy. >> yes but not as bad as we once thought. let's look outside and right now we're looking at a beautiful afternoon across the inner harbor. i'll tell 'ya, you talk about the ideal weekend to get out on the boat or your friend's boat. usually get on your friends boat, just bring it cooler, something in it. temperature 85 degrees right now. humidity 50% but feels muggy

out there. so shop for damascus through the afternoon and you see fair weather clouds streaking across the sky, but then we get more blue skies as we trend later into the afternoon and evening. and just a picturesque blue sky afternoon at 82 degrees there now. low temperatures this morning, bottomed out at 66. bwi. 64 the river down to 68. ocean city lot of people at the beach this weekend, great spot to be on an early august weekend. beating the heat there. but still only 71 overnight. it can be muggy even down by the ocean. and 85 this afternoon from york to baltimore, eastern 84. these temperatures we thought we would be pushing closer to 90 but haven't seen enough heat and one of things that works against our temperatures actually humidity. the moist air doesn't heat up as rapidly, and so i think as we go into the next few days we'll push close to 90 but might be until monday before we see the big 90. right now lot of clear sky

across the state. even across baltimore. just a couple puffy fair weather clouds picked up. no precipitation until you getaway off to the west and some downpours here in eastern west virginia. couple heavy downpours there. other than that, active weather brewing across the deep southeast, atlanta southward. but just not seeing much across maryland, delaware, pennsylvania. the whole mid-atlantic in a dry scenario. forecast pattern does not change a lot. we do watch some active weather off the coast here. some occasional showers flaring up on our computer model. not tomorrow afternoon but as we go into monday afternoon you see a few showers offshore. other than that just not much. just fair weather cloud cover at times. i think we'll stay dry until probably the middle part of next week but it is a rainier scenario late in the week so definitely enjoy the sunshine. working on the tan or the days to work on it. bay forecast tomorrow -- overnight tonight, dropping to

68 degrees. mostly clear on a warm south breeze. dropping to just below 70. tomorrow we'll bounce to 87, 88 degrees. it will feel hotter than that downtown but all in all a pretty good-looking sunday to wrap up the weekend. forecast for the next seven days, gets a little hotter around here. yes, keep the water bottle handy monday and tuesday as we pop it close to 90. then you see the wet weather comes back towards the end of the week. >> all right. thank you, wyatt. many baseball fans head in for cal ripken's world series. last night the family kicked off the cap really ken world series. teams from japan, mexico, canada and puerto rico will play in the series and after the opening ceremony cal addressed the young players, coaches and parents. some very good advice there. after the ceremony players enjoyed a home run durr bee and skills competition, which was hosted by cal's buddy and our very own good morning maryland anchor, jamie costello. tonight maryland team umac will take on an oregon team at 8 p.m. and an in another part of hartford county the competition is heating up with the 8th annual barbeque. 52 chefs will compete in a cook- off in bel air. thousands of people expected to turn out for the food and craft vendors. admission is free and the event runs through 10:00 at the state courthouse parking lot. the musicians were legendary and the concerted became legendary, a look back now 40 years at woodstock.

august 1969, the country was in turmoil, the hippie movement was in full swing, and anti-vietnam war demonstrations with a common occurrence on college campuses, many ending in violence. and on a small farm in upstate new york, promoters organized a music festival that became a symbol for a whole generation. abc's chuck on the 40th anniversary of woodstock. >> reporter: a plaque at the bottom of a hillside marks the site. 40 years ago what started as a music festival turned into a statement which the love and peace generation that resonates to this day. more than 400,000 young people disillusioned by the vietnam war wearing clothes far different from their parents, and questioning the status quo

like no previous american generation. >> everything from peace movement to the band -- movement, to the lights movement, women's movement, all of the goals and the imaginations and the frontiers everybody was seeking in those years sort of -- crystallized in a peculiar way. >> in the rural area, 80 miles northwest of new york city, there was little organization. promoters were hoping for an audiences of 150,000 and were not prepared for the crowds that came. food and medical supplies were short. widespread drug use, sanitary conditions were primitive, and torrential rains turned a seating area into a sea of mud. but the music kept playing. ♪ ♪ ers >> things were happening, it was a joyous thing. >> joyous to this day. >> close your eyes.

some local kids had quite an adventure today. it was all a part of backyard science days at the maryland science center. kids had a chance to experience some hands-on activities like making pictures, eating crickets, warm cookies and having vegetable car races. organizers say they wanted to teach youngsters things they can do at home that deal with science. and by the looks of things, kids picked up educational ideas and had a great time. >> bask in the sun out there! >> some click pets some warm cookies. i don't know about that! i'll pass on that one. >> warm cookies, not into that. probably not. let's show you quick tonight down to 68 or so. a quiet night in the city, weather-wise at least. 7-day forecast now things do get hotter as we push towards monday but tomorrow another sunny day, another great day to be outside for the kids and the big kids too. >> all right. that's all for us at 6:30.
