tourists are safe. >> reporter: saturday evening, a gunman opened fire on two victims outside the phillips seafood restaurant, sending patrons running from the light street pavilion. police believe it involved rival gang members from the crips and bloods. earlier mayor sheila dixon had called on police to crack down on groups of youths after random assaults at the city's popular tourist area. >> it's very frustrating. we need to be vigilant and not profiling anybody, because everybody has the right to come in downtown and other areas. but there is also a particular behavior that people have to maintain. >> reporter: the mayor says there were plenty of uniformed officers at the inner harbor over the weekend, and that the shooting occurred inside the pavilion. that's where private security takes over. but whether it's private or public, the question remains over whether there is enough security here to convince tourists it's safe. >> they think about how they

with details. >> reporter: marybeth, when police arrived, they found two men lying in the parking lot, both had been stabbed and were rushed to a hospital where one of them died. police believe the stabbing actually happened about a mile away at a home in the 5000 block of hollywood road. authorities believed the wounded men then drove themselves to the 7-eleven where they were discovered lying on the ground near their vehicle. police searched the hollywood road home and suspect the stabbing was the result of a domestic fight that got out of control. >> we haven't had violent crime here in 42 years. longer than that, i lived here 42 years. it just doesn't happen. >> crime is everywhere, and these things happen everywhere. we need to stay together, stay strong, and stay vigilant and protect each other. >> police have not identified either of the victims or made any arrests. their investigation is continuing. terry owens, abc 2 news. it was a robbery that sort

of puzzled police in montgomery county, but almost a month later, they think they have their guy. on july 30th, the saks fifth avenue in chevy chase was robbed. several chanel dresses were taken. detectives had surveillance pictures of the suspect. the only problem, they weren't quite sure if it was a he or a she. eventually they figured out it was a man. an arrest warrant was put out for 20-year-old jonathan bradley, dressed as a woman, bradley was arrested. no. >> the search for the prisoner who escaped last week. authorities are now offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of devon champagne. his family says they called police after he showed up at their home on friday. police say he escaped after attacking a sheriff's deputy while he was being transported to the howard county detention center on thursday night. the deputy is expected to be okay, but champagne is considered dangerous, and if you spot devon champagne, or

have any information that could help track him down, you're asked to call the howard county sheriff's office at 410-313- 2150. there is less than a month to go before september 15th when president obama wants a health care reform bill from congress. if lawmakers are going to agree on a measure that. >> have a lot of ground to cover. the main sticking point is the public option which supporters call vital, which may be a deal breaker. viviana hurtado reports compromise could be in the air. >> reporter: while speaking about veterans issues at the vfw national convention in phoenix, the president took time to mention his proposed plans to overhaul the health care system. >> since there has been so much misinformation about health care reform, let me say this. one thing the reform won't change is veteran's health care. no one is going to take away your benefits that is the plain and simple truth. >> reporter: one thing on the table is the hotly debated public option.

many democrats say it will provide coverage for millions of uninsured americans like also reins in cost. >> the public option. to create competition for the first time in a long time. >> reporter: but on the sunday talk shows, the administration and white house allies hinted they may drop this provision if it's the only way to pass the health care bill. this meeting at a town hall meeting in colorado, the president himself insisted no compromise. >> the public option, whether we have it or we don't have it is not the entirety of health care reform. this is just one sliver of it. >> stop obama now! >> reporter: but having a public option is part of the overhaul of the health care system has riled up opponents and supporters alike in phoenix and around the country. nonprofit insurance cooperative is an option that seems to be gaining traction. supporters say they would force private insurers to bring down health care costs. critics say they have no record of the achieving this goal.

abc news, washington. new at 5, while some republican candidates already expressing interest in going up against governor martin o'malley next year, former g.o.p. governor robert ehrlich is watching from the sidelines. still, the leading state republican fundraiser is confident that governor ehrlich will have a hard time keeping himself out of the race. a spokesman says mr. ehrlich is fine with waiting to make his decision. delegate patrick mcdonough is announcing a run and mike pappas says he'll be in the game. let's take a live look outside. even though the temperatures might not have been the hottest this summer, it sure felt like it outside. norm is standing by with a first look at the forecast. >> it is in fact a very sticky evening outside. take a look at maryland's most powerful radar. right now we're not pick up any precipitation across the region. nice clear scan out there. but as we go through the next couple days, scattered showers because of heat and humidity will continue to start making their way in our direction. here is your forecast for the next couple of hours.

claudette is still causing problems in parts of florida and alabama. it's been a few busy days as tropical storms churn up the surf. lindsey davis has the latest from florida. >> the 2009 hurricane season started june 1st, but didn't make its presence known until this weekend. three named storms developed in 48 hours. >> everybody failed pretty well through the ordeal. >> thunderstorm claudette is the first to hit the mainland this year. it formed at the last second into a storm. >> and that's what the concern is nor this hurricane season, that we get storm systems that perform close in along the u.s. mainland. and then we go from not having a storm to have a hurricane that can make landfall in less than 48 hours. >> claudette pushed its way across the florida panhandle with heavy downpours and dangerous winds. this abc reporter had to bear the brunt of it in panama city beach. >> but certainly it's got stinging and it is making it very uncomfortable to stand up. >> rainfall accumulations range between 3 to 10 inches. >> i didn't know it was going get this bad. >> officials in bay county florida say one man drown affidavit ignoring warnings to stay out of the gulf. and another man went miss when his boat sank. claudette has weakened to a tropical storm over alabama. while the worst may be over for now, meteorologists still have their eyes on bill. it's predicted to become a category 3 hurricane. >> the good news is that we do feel that bill will take a much

farther track than ana did, and right now bill should avoid the eastern seaboard. >> reporter: according to accuweather, hurricane season will likely be busy for the next week to ten days, then become very quiet dur the early part of september. lindsey davis, abc 2 news. >> and we've been wonting. it's been hurricane season for a while, where they all were, and bam. >> that's the way it goes. right now from now about mid- september, we're kind of approaching the peak. the second week of september is the peak of the activity right there. but we'll be tracking bill and show you where we think it's going to be going. meantime, the shot from harbor cam overlooking the new cooling fountain down at the inner harbor. it's down near the science center. it is really cool. our temperature right now at bwi 87 degrees. 45% humidity. wind currently from the southeast at 5, and the pressure steady, 30.14 there are the tides tomorrow at fort mchenry. high tide 5:18.

low tide 12:36 in the afternoon. we'll set at 7:57. temperature-wise around the region, look at hagerstown, 92 degrees. 89 in york. 90 in winchester, virginia. downtown baltimore 87. but it feels warmer than that because of all the humidity. ocean city down the boardwalk right now 88 degrees. i'm going to get out of the way after i pointed there is florida there is the eastern seaboard. there is what is left of ana right there. but bill is hiding right behind our abc 2 logo. here comes bill churning as it makes its way towards the east over the past 24 hours, still making its way towards the east. it is gaining a lot of strength. bill right now has winds of 90 miles per hour. there it is right now, a category 1 storm hanging there right just to the left of our abc 2 logo. moving towards the west northwest. 14 miles an hour. now here is what it looks like bill is going to be doing. it will intensify. it looks like to a category 3 storm. and then start a turn northward. and by saturday, it looks like

it's going to be about 4 to 500 miles off the coast of the carolinas, continuing to turn on to the north and east. but we'll keep a real close eye on bill as it makes its way across and towards the caribbean. as far as our satellite picture throughout the day today, a pretty nice day. a few light clouds. a few light showers broke out in western portions of virginia. but for the most part, it's still precipitation-free. however, as we good into tomorrow, in moisture is going to gradually start working its way in our direction. the remnants of claudeette continue to bring moisture into portions of alabama and georgia, and in will bring us rainfall mid to the end of the week. right now nothing showing up on maryland's most powerful radar. nice clear scan out there. temperature-wise in fallston 87. 87 at perry hall. reisterstown at 85 degrees. 85 in havre de grace. northeast right now at 83. here is your forecast for the overnight period. the showers that we're seeing down over virginia will stay there, at least for tonight. then tomorrow afternoon, because of heat and humidity, bubbleup thunderstorm activity

be reviewing the video. some amazing pictures out of cape coral, florida where a weekend tornado damaged nearly two dozen homes, tore trees from the ground and ripped cars. one homeowner saw his car almost on the roof. fortunately no one was hurt. cape coral is on florida's gulf coast near fort myers. the dog days of summer are here, so some hot dogs took the plunge. it's called dogpalooza, the one day of the year when dog owners are allowed to bring their best friends for a swim. this happened a day after denver public pools closed to human swimmers. the pools will now be drained and cleaned for the winter. basically lost their home not because of fire or flood, but because of mold. good evening, everybody. i'm er the owens. they thought it had been abated, but a few months ago it came back, forcing them out into the streets. roosevelt leftwichs that story. >> reporter: it looks like a nice house, but it has a terrible problem inside. four months after they moved in four years ago, everyone started to get sick. mold was growing in the basement. >> sealed the om off. everyone in the room got thrown out through the windows, and had the room cleaned. we found foundation cracks and leaking windows, all kinds of stuff, had everything repaired and had to move out of the home for nine weeks. >> reporter: after spending about $30,000 to fix the leaks and cleaning the house themselves, they thought the issue was settled, until a few months ago when everyone started to get sick again. the mold has come back. this time it was all over the
