however, things are much quieter now. on maryland's most powerful doppler radar, the storms have moved off the coastline, now out to sea. so we have a bit of a break. as far as the rain left behind we're seeing as much as, well, .56, they are a little more than a half-inch in owings mills. temperaturewise we're in the lower 70s this morning but sure feels warmer than that. feels like we're approaching the 80-degree mark already and it will only get worse today. by noon we'll see a return of storms in some places, 83 degrees and 89 degrees this afternoon for your daytime high. more widespread thunderstorms this afternoon. and they are only going to stay with us through most of the week. let's check the roads with kim. traffic is moving along very smoothly here at 95 southbound, headed towards the whitemarsh boulevard area but things are going to slow up a little bit once you try to get on the on-ramp from the outer loop back on to 95 southbound. that is because of a disabled vehicle blocking the on-ramp there, that has traffic backed up or just slightly delayed at

this time. also, in the glen arm area, harford road between long green pike and factory road remains closed in both directions because of the downed trees and wires. try bel air road as an option. ritchie highway and pasadena and route 10, traffic lights out, look for police at the intersection there, definitely use caution. and the inner loop after harford road, crash still blocks the right lane. this is the jfx at cold spring lane. you can see traffic is moving along nicely in both directions. back to you. look at this accident that our our overnight photographer pete "on the street" o'neill got exclusively for us. this is weird. i mean, baltimore police are looking for the driver of the car -- not that they are in trouble but -- they could be pretty hurt. crews tell us that the car was traveling on i-83 near the ruxton road exit around 2:00 this morning when it slammed right into the guardrail, flipped over and then burst into flames. paramedics got there the car was empty.

police ask, if you saw anything to give them a call. we don't know if the driver is really hurt, we don't know. neighbors working with police to make an arrest in an early morning shooting. sources -- pete "on the street" o'neal, again, a busy man overnight, says a 52-year-old man was shot with a shotgun on homewood avenue, happened 1:00 this morning. what did the neighbors do? they went right to the police, the police went right to the man who they say did it and that led to an arrest a couple of blocks away. the victim is expected to survive his injuries. now to this story -- a 76-year-old black man who police say was beaten by a group of white men, it happened in south baltimore early yesterday morning, abc2 news sherrie johnson has more on what police are calling a hate crime. >> reporter: good morning. an elderly man is hospitalized this morning severely beaten after a hate crime. authorities say the 76-year-old victim was fishing with his wife at fort armistead park in south baltimore yesterday when he was attacked. the park is under the francis

scott key bridge. the car was packing up to leave when police say three white men walked up to them, beat the man while yelling racial slurs. his wife wasn't hurt. a fisherman at the park says it's normally safe but make a point not to be there at night. >> we see boats and police helicopters sometimes, that's it. >> reporter: the suspects stole the victim's car but police located it quickly because of a car theft device in it. police arrested 28-year-old calvin lockner. he was also recently arrested for beating his wife for "associating with african-americans." he told police he country like african-americans and that led police to classify this as a hate crime. two other suspects are still on the loose at this time the naacp is planning to hold a rally august 28th at war memorial plaza to bring the community together against hate crimes. sherrie johnson, abc2 news.

5:34 now. police say a toddler who died earlier this month in severn is officially called a homicide. 3-year-old charles brantley died on august 12th. police say the child's tearcaretaker took him to the baltimore-washington baltimore-washington medical center and said he fell down the stairs. staff then contacted police because his injuries were not consistent with falling down steps. it was ruled a homicide and charges are pending. so anyone with any fireworks is urged to call the anne arundel county police department now at 410-22-3453. in harford county, a 15-year-old remains in the county detention center after police say he attacked his stepdad with a baseball bat. according to charging documents it happened after stan smith jr. told he couldn't spend the night at a friend's house. so the stepfather himself has since been arrested and charged with assault in an unrelated incident involving his

daughter. bud hamilton is counting his blessings this morning. he was driving along putty hill avenue at the height of last night's storm and he watched as a tree came crashing down on his car. luckily the tree just missed the roof of his car but as you can see that is about all that was missed. >> a little sooner, a little further along i think i would have hit the roof and i would have really been in trouble. >> while the storm knocked out power to thousands of area homes authorities are trying to determine if lightning was the cause of a fire that happened in middle river. if you park downtown you can't afford to miss this next story. soon you could be adding more to your meter. how much prices are expected to climb. and another hollywood couple is calling it quits. this time sean penn and robin wright. live look outside our window now. as we look at 72 degrees, humidity 100%. here's your mta report now with mark jones. >> good morning.

no nobody hit the lottery last night. hopefully no lightning hit your house. let's check the weather with susan schrack. >> good morning. the last of the storms from the overnight hours are off the coast so things are looking a little better for us. there you can see they are just off the coast of atlantic city. everybody saw quite a bit of thunderstorm activity. we don't have anything right now. we have a bit of a break. as far as the amounts, they varied anywhere from a half-inch to maybe more than just a little more than a trace. so it varied as far as what thunderstorm dumped over top of you at what time. as far as temperatures now, we're in the mid to lower 70s and it feels more like we're in the upper 70s to low 80s. here's the rest of the day, looking at 70s for wakeup

5:43. we have exclusive pictures of the latest c.o. leak at the cove village. abc2 news linda so says it was bad enough to send a baby and young couple to franklin square. linda has more. >> reporter: that family is expected to be ok but i can tell you the people who live here are not ok with the ongoing carbon monoxide issues that have plagued cove village over the years. this is exclusive video shot by our pete "on the street" o'neal. it happened around midnight, a woman called 911 when the carbon monoxide detector in her unit went off while she was cooking. when responders arrived they checked neighboring units and found levels were high. a young couple and baby girl had to be taken to franklin square hospital after showing signs of possible carbon monoxide poisoning. cove village has had ongoing c.o. problems over the years. in 2005 a family was killed. a month later nine people were hospitalized. since then emergency crews have responded to cove village one too many times.

management believes the problem is coming from faulty stoves and hot water heaters. last month many of the units got brand new ones but the problem continues and residents are angry and frustrated. >> here we go again. it's happening all over again. if they would just take and just get electric stoves and stuff it would probably eliminate the problem. until then it's going to continue. >> reporter: cove village is managed by sawyer realty. we plan to get the company's response later this morning and hopefully some action to resolve this ongoing problem. live in essex, linda so, abc2 news. to another story you'll only see on abc2 -- police on the lookout for the driver of an suv last seen leaving hammonds ferry road. witnesses tell our overnight photographer pete "on the street" o'neill someone found an unidentified man laying in the street before 11:00 last night. crews say he died at the scene and police are talking to

witnesses trying to get a positive id on this suv. trial is set today for a teen accused of killing a classmate. 15-year-old timothy oxendine is charged in the stabbing death of 15-year-old markiel williams. the two were students at lambiel middle school, lamell middle school. more than two months after his death michael jackson will be buried in the great mausoleum at forest lawn cemetery. the ceremony will be limited to family and friends, takes place august 29th which would have been his 51st birthday. mark mccloud, the suspect accused of stalking miley cyrus made a brief appearance in court yesterday in georgia. police arrested him twice on misdemeanor charges in june and again this month. both times police say he came looking for the 16-year-old as she filmed a movie. police say he told officers he was secretly engaged to miley

>> the new venture hopes to acquire $100 million in opportunities which will also include a private investment. six flags has been closed since hurricane katrina. good morning. i'm meteorologist susan schrack. quiet for us this morning so far. we have a little bit of fog so be careful as you drive to work this morning. 72 degrees now, relative humidity 100%. and the wind is calm. that's definitely fog weather. 72 degrees in baltimore. 82 richmond, 74 philadelphia. so a little on the muggy side. we're looking at some cloud cover, definitely. most of the storms from the overnight hours are off the coastline and things are quiet now. they will be firing up though. we have a trough over the mid-atlantic region, it will stay in place. that means we have the chance of repeat showers and thunderstorm activity every night. we're looking at it tonight, as far as thursday and as far as friday are concerned as well. in fact they could be pretty

strong on friday as the front comes through. but that trough may really save us in the end because hurricane bill is in the atlantic ocean and that trough is likely to steer it away from the coastline of the united states. this is a monster hurricane. it has really been intensifying very quickly this week. category 4 right now. winds of 135 miles per hour. gusts as high as 161. there's the track it takes. then that trough over top of us helps to steer it away from the mainland. things look pretty good as far as the track of that hurricane. for today, 89 degrees for us, partly sunny, showers and storms. for the next seven days, again, the chance for unsettled weather continues all the way through into the weekend. then we get the front coming through and we get some really nice weather, nice breath of fresh air come in for the early part of next week. let's check the roads with kim trawsk is running smoothly in anne arundel county. this is route 50 at route 97. the roads are a little wet but no problems to let you know about. 97 nbc news is also a smooth

opportunity. >> reporter: think of it as an exercise in thriftiness. brian jackson and his wife has a reservation. they are already late. >> to pay $8 a day when i'll be here two hours? >> reporter: for a tourist or someone on business who needs to make a quick stop, the moderate humidity is great if you can get one. >> they are designed sore people coming here for shorter stays, looking to do business in the city can find a place to park. but right now we have people parking all day long, lots of people are doing that. >> reporter: the city parking authority is proposing a raise in metered parking rates initially to $1.50 in the central business district, an area bordered by several streets. it will cost $12 for eight hours, comparable to parking garages so frugal downtown people will get off the moderate -- meter. that would help jackson and others find parking.
