open when you sleep. another c.o. leak at the cove village. we're live to find out how three people are now recovering. the story goes he wanted to spend the night at a friend's house. his stepdad said no, then it got real ugly. no sweat, the air is back on at this baltimore highrise. it took a while but finally it's cool. let's look at the weather with meteorologist susan schrack. >> thank you. good morning. things have settled down considerably since the overnight hours where we had all the storms rolling through. let's look at our live local radar, maryland's most powerful doppler radar. there's the last of the storms moving off the coastline there across ocean city and out to sea. we really don't have anything coming after it so we're looking at very quiet conditions, thankfully, gives us a bit of a break before things start to steam up again as we head into the afternoon hours. as far as the rain it left behind it really varied anywhere from maybe a trace in chestertown to a half-inch in owings mills, depending on

where the thunderstorms decided to form and then empty. temperaturewise rear looking at the middle to low 70s and feel more like upper 70s. so there is a heat index reading already that is going to continue throughout the day today. 83 by noon. widely scattered thunderstorms around, then it becomes widespread this afternoon with a high of 89 degrees. so be aware of those thunderstorms making a return. let's check the roads with kim. >> thank you. if you're making your way southbound headed towards the dc area we're looking at 95 southbound as you make your way through howard county headed to the capitol beltway. no problems to let you know about on 95 or 295, both roads are running without incident. baltimore county, though, in the glenarm section, be advised, harford road between long green pike and factory road is closed in both directions because of downed trees and wires in the roadway. bel air road is probably going to be your best alternate. a couple of incidents in anne arundel county, pasadena, ritchie highway and route 10, traffic lights remain out.

expect to see cops and street signs out there. and also eastbound route 100 at magothy bridge road, a crash there. in the city, falls road at cold spring lane, that crash remains on scene. jfx and northern parkway, no problems there. back to you. 6:32. how many times is this going to happen? we said that four times ago. another c.o. leak at cove village. linda so is live in essex. >> reporter: carbon monoxide problems plagued cove village over the years. just this past summer there have been calls to the apartments a number of timings. people who live here say they are simply fed up. this is exclusive video shot by pete "on the street" o'neal. it happened around midnight. a woman called 911 when the carbon monoxide detector in her unit went off while she was cooking. when responders arrived they checked neighboring units and found levels were high. a young couple and baby girl had to be taken to franklin square hospital after showing signs of possible carbon

monoxide poisoning. cove village had ongoing problems over the years, in 2005 a family was killed. a month later nine people were hospitalized and since then emergency crews have responded to cove village one too many times. management believes the problem is coming from faulty stoves and hot water heaters. last month many of the units got new ones but the problem continues and residents are angry. cove village is managed by sawyer realty. we plan to call the company later this morning to get their response and hopefully action to resolve this afternoon going problem. live in essex, linda so, abc2 news. police in arrested county arrested a -- police in harford county arrested a teenaged boy on charges he tried to beat his stepfather with a baseball bat. he's in the harford county detention center with no bond now. according to charging documents, smith struck loni talbot twice with a bat after

his dad refused to let him spend the night at a friend's house. those close to him say the boy may have snapped because talbot made a threatening gesture with his fist. >> he's a good kid. he's never acted out like this before. i've known him for eight years. he's not this type of person. smith's stepfather has been arrested and charged with assault in a separate incident involving his daughter. 6:34 now. here's a chance to save money if you want to fly. southwest airlines is now cutting fares and we're told some seats could sell for as low as $59 each way. but be warned, the lower prices don't cover many days around the thanksgiving/christmas holidays. tickets have to be purchased by september 3rd. many of you are shopping for back-to-school supplies and clothes for children and many of you are saying that the kids are going to be heading back with less. >> i don't want to spend more

"good morning america" at the top of the hour. i'm jamie costello. wednesday, august 19th. right to the headlines before weather and traffic here. a silent killer still in essex. linda so is live to find out how three people are recovering this morning. and this time yesterday morning a 76-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after being jumped while fishing. sherrie johnson reports police are calling this a hate crime. and we have seen his picture. we've heard the reports. now we get to hear from the man himself. michael jackson's doctor says hold on, the truth will come out. these stories and more coming up. first, a look at the weather with susan schrack.

>> thank you. good morning. things are looking pretty quiet, a nice sunrise over the horizon and temperatures already starting to feel on the muggy side. 73 degrees now, relative humidity 96%, and the wind is calm. satellite and radar composite shows how thigh clouds around most of the night. we're seeing breaks in the clouds, looking at partly cloudy conditions as we head into the morning hours. we have a trough over top of the mid-atlantic region that creates the potential for thunderstorms for us, for the next couple of days, but that trough is going to keep us safe from hurricane bill. this is a monster hurricane, very well formed, very powerful. it has increased in strength amazingly fast. it's now a category 4. winds at 130 miles per hour. and gusting as high as 161. the track is going to take it near the coastline but the trough that is over top of us is going to divert that so to speak off to the north. for today, 89 degrees, partly sunny, showers and thunderstorms returning for us

this afternoon. let's check the roads with kim. >> thank you. no problems to let you know about this morning on the beltway or at the tunnels for that matter. traffic is moving along nicely here -- well, not so nicely, a little building volume and some slowing but no incidents to let you know about. good news if you're traveling 70 westbound, that earlier crash at route 29 has been cleared but we're getting word of another crash in anne arundel county. this is in jennifer road at medical parkway. in glenarm, harford road remains closed in both directions between long green pike and factory road because of downed trees and wires. bel air road is probably your best alternate. in pasadena, the traffic lights remain out at ritchie highway and route 10. expect police on the scene guiding traffic there. eastbound route 100 at magothy bridge road, that crash remains on scene. and in the city, falls road and cold spring lane, an accident so just use caution. here at the jfx, traffic moving smoothly. looking for a business you know

killed a man in baltimore county. it happened just around 11:00 last night on hammonds ferry road. witnesses tell our our overnight photographer pete "on the street" o'neill that someone found an unidentified man lying in the middle of the road and crews say the man died at the scene. neighbors tell police in the -- help police arrested a suspect. sources tell pete "on the street" o'neal a 52-year-old man was shot on homewood avenue 2:00 this morning. witnesses led police to the man they say did it. the man is expected to be be ok. police in anne arundel county ruling the death of a 3-year-old a homicide. they say charles branly's caretaker took him to the hospital more than a week ago and said the boy fell down steps. the staff called police because the injuries were not consistent with falling down steps. the boy died five days after being in the hospital. police say the medical examiner's office has ruled the death a homicide. no charges have been filled. a 76-year-old fisherman was beaten up yesterday and one of

the men arrested has a long criminal record. this is the story about the color of one's skin and why police are calling this a hate crime. abc2 news sherrie johnson. >> reporter: an elderly man is hospitalized, severely beaten after a hate crime. police charged 28-year-old calvin lockner with that crime after he admitted to investigators he does not like african-americans. three months ago the convicted rapist was arrested for beating his wife for "associating with african-americans," and police say lockner and two other white men beat the 76-year-old with a bat yesterday. the victim and his wife were fishing at form armistead park at the southern end of the francis scott key bridge. the suspects took off in the couple's suv but they were quickly located since it had a car theft device. lockner was arrested but his two friends managed to escape. >> based on hits statements that he said during the interview, it's investigated as a hate crime. apparently it was three white men on an african-american,

it's concerning. it's troubling that i have to sit here and talk about this kind of crime. >> whether or not it's considered black on black crime, whether it's considered hate crimes but it is clear that we must come together as a community. >> reporter: the naacp will hold a prayer vigil and rally on august 28th at the war male -- war memorial plaza. meanwhile, sheila dixon praised police for capturing one suspect so quickly. police hope lockner will identify the other two suspects very soon. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. the trial is set today for a teen accused of killing a classmate. timothy oxendine is charged with the stabbing death of 15-year-old markell williams. they were students at lamell middle school. williams was found in the 2800 block of north dukeland street stabbed to death last november. michael jackson's doctor breaks his silence with a video message, with a thank you to supporters. dr. conrad murray has come

under fire because investigators say he may have been given the king of pop too many prescription drugs. a jackson's mother is now considering a wrongful death lawsuit with the doctors, the main person in the suit. in a minute-long youtube video here's what the doctor had to say. >> don't worry, as long as i keep god in my heart and you in my life i will be fine. i have done all i could do. i told the truth, and i have faith the truth will prevail. god bless you. and thank you. >> dr. murray met with detectives twice since jackson's death. his lawyers say he's cooperating with the investigation. this morning those of you that live at the mccolloh high rises in baltimore, you slept comfortably. the air conditioning is back on after being off for four days. after calls from abc2 news the housing authority went door to door to make sure everyone was

ok and said they were not notified about the problem until saturday. because it was so hot the temperature reaching up into the 90s, the community room was left open so people had a place to cool down. housing authority officials say the ac was up and working yesterday afternoon. members of the bethel ame church will be heading back to their church next week. the congregation had been holding services in a synagogue since july 1st when a lightning strike damaged the historic building. the church at 1,300 druid hill avenue will be back open in time for services. this is an event that welcomes members back at the end of the summer. the first service is set for sunday august 30th, less than two months after the church sustained fire and water damage in that lightning strike. if you use parking meters downtown you may be soon paying more. the city parking authority proposed raising the price per hour by at least 50 cents. here's the reason, not to raise money but to get people into the parking garages. with the price increase it would cost $12 to park for

she'll be on "top chef" tonight. she said she taught herself how to cook. to watch the episode head to silo point, there will be a viewing party. the party starts at 8:00. the show premieres at 9:00 tonight. good morning. i'm meteorologist susan schrack. things are going to be another hazy one today. high of 90 degrees. 89 degrees, partly sunny, showers and thunderstorms around so that makes a repeat performance from where we saw things last night. the next seven days are going to be much the same as we finish out the week, highs in the upper 80s, a chance of thunderstorms each afternoon and particularly on friday, thursday and friday. they could be in the severe category. be aware of that. front comes through friday, cools us down for the weekend and dries us out somewhat. we're looking at some relief as we head into the early part of next week.
