firecrackers. that was it. walked outside, goes back inside. everybody did. nobody could leave, nobody could go. >> reporter: he is the owner here. he said robbery suspect brian doukas came into his store, bought a beer and sat out back in his truck. police had fingered doukas in previous robberies and confronted him. that's when they say he tried to run over the officer twice. >> suspect then slammed on the gas and went toward the officer. the officer had drawn his weapon and fired multiple rounds into the reek and struck the suspect, and he died on the scene. >> reporter: these are photos from a viewer shortly after the shooting. you can see the pickup to the left. officers were waiting for their suspects here, because they had seen his pickup truck here before. he was implicated not just one robbery, but four. police say doukas robbed an m&t bank bank in millersville, a papa john's in severna park, a wings n things in glen burnie, and finally a pnc bank in crofton. it was at the crofton robbery where police say they were able

to pick up clear surveillance image, leading investigators right to doukas. he is now dead. the woman in the photo remains at large. >> we believe she is involved, as we head earlier. but we don't know who she is. and obviously still in the investigation. >> reporter: a robbery string investigation that continues after monday night's police- involved shooting of one of the suspects. in anne arundel county, brian kuebler, abc 2 news. >> and if you know anything than woman in the surveillance photo, you're urged to call metro crimestoppers at 1-866-7- lock-up. a shooting this afternoon in northwest baltimore. a man was shot around 2:00 this afternoon at the corner of liberty heights avenue and garrison heights boulevard. the victim was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. investigators are checking to see if cameras in the area will eprovide them with any clues. a u.s. park officer is out of the hospital after being hurt in a crash on the baltimore washington parkpay. it lapped on the southbound

lanes between route 197 and the powder mill exit. the officer was standing on the shoulder of the road after pulling a car over future a traffic stop, when a pickup truck struck his patrol car. the officer was somehow pulled under his cruiser and pushed about 40 feet. the two drivers were also hurt, but they are expected to recover. five years after a deadly water taxi accident at the inner harbor, the coast guard has released its final report on the accident. five people died in the tragedy back in 2004. the report finds the pontoon boat capsized due to a number of reasons, including a bad decision to leave the dock in the space of an approaching storm. the report also recommends inspections of pontoon boats to identify those at higher risks of overturning. a controversial nightclub in mount vernon may remain open after winning the latest round in its legal war with the city's liquor board. critics call it a magnet for violence. but as abc 2 news jeff hager reports, sweet ultra lounge will survive as the only bottle

club in baltimore. >> reporter: for mark twain and fdr to the kennedys and even the rockefellers, the belvedere hotel once attracted some of the most famous people in the country. but in recent years, a hip-hop club located in its basement has attracted a very different crowd. >> we definitely know when that club is going on, because in all, all areas of the street are brocked off by police cars. it just turns into a really rough neighborhood, in the middle of a really nice neighborhood. >> reporter: the stabbing and assaults prompted the board to revoke the liquor license last year under the same rules it uses to regulate 1400 bars across the city. but the club challenged that decision, and now a circuit court judge has ruled in its favor. >> we exacted them to the same rules that we do all the other bars. apparently the judge needs that we need to enact new regulations for bottle clubs,

in this case, one single club. and we will now be doing it. >> reporter: for now, those who call mount vernon a midtown home will have to put up with their unwanted neighbor. >> bottle service? i don't know if that is a different draw. you know, maybe people get drunker off of bottle service, you know. >> reporter: but in the months since the city attempted to close down the club, there has been more violence as young patrons free throw out on to the streets. and the city may use those incidents to try for a second time to shut it down. >> to give residents' petitions, asking us to close the club we can have a hearing based on 2009 occurrences. in the month of november. so we will certainly be revisiting the issue of the sweet ultra lounge in the very, very near future. >> so they might have won the battle, but they haven't won the war. >> no question. we're still fighting. >> reporter: in mount vernon, jeff hager, abc 2 news. >> the club is open from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. from thursday through saturday,

and from 6 to 10 on sunday nights. and it has attracted an increased police presence since last year's shooting. more budget cuts are on the way as the governor outlines more than 45th million dollars that will get the ax. at a news conference this morning, a governor says that this latest round of cuts will include furloughs and layoffs. the number of furlough days will be based on salary, ranging from three to five days with an additional five days off for holidays. >> for those employees who are going to be affected, they're all moms and dads. they're all dipping out of whatever savings they had to send their kids back to school. it is not something that we do because we enjoyed doing it. it's something we do because it's necessary in order to protect maryland and get us through the other side of this recession. >> 205 state employees will be laid off and 159 jobs will remain vacant. the rest of the cuts will come from aid to counties and municipalities, higher education and savings from restructuring debt.

the government may be making some dire predictions, but not everyone is buying into the panic about the swine flu. a presidential panel has predicted nearly half the country could get infected with the disease, and that as many as 90,000 people could die from it. those scary numbers have a lot of people freaking out. but gbmc dr. melissa sparrow says there is no need to work yourself into a frenzy. she says the swine flu can be as manageable as the regular flu if people just take simple precautions. >> there is no indication that this flu has changed, that there has been a indication of any kind. that's what would be required that it's more severe. >> it's very difficult to turn around the correct vaccine in such a short time. health experts are already doing clinical trials, and say it could take until thanksgiving to fully immunize millions of americans with the multi-step process. on our website today, we asked do you think maryland schools are ready to handle a swine flu

outbreak? 14% of you said yes. 86% of you said no. well, school hasn't started yet for a lot of students, but the numbers are already from for a number of national tests. how maryland students fared. >> reporter: marybeth, we have good news tonight for parents. maryland students continue to outpace kids in other parts of the country on the advanced placement and a.c.t. national assessments. the number of maryland students scoring at the college mastery level on the a.p. test increased 9.1% in 2009. that's according to numbers released by the college board. and the number of students taking the exams jumped 7% over 2008. but the good news doesn't stop there. >> both the a.c.t. in terms of the s.a.t. we have a closing of the achievement gap. and a tremendous acceleration of our african american students and our hispanic

students. we look at advanced placement. it's the same thing. >> now to put this in perspective, we're told there was a 17.2% increase in the percentage of african american students scoring at the college mastery level. hispanic students also had success in the program. and one more piece of positive news. for the a.c.t. exam, maryland students earned a composite score of 22.1. that's above the national average of 21.1. terry owens, abc 2 news. >> thanks, terry. education secretary arnie duncan says american students need to get better at math and science. he says performance in those subjects have leveled off recently while students from some other countries continue to improve. >> internationally, our 15-year- old on the math tests came in 31st. and that's not news to all of us who are in the area. but we are lagging the rest of the world. and we are lagging it in some

pretty substantial ways. >> duncan says part of the solution is increasing salaries for math and science teachers. a rather unusual bust at bwi thurgood marshall airport. officials say a traveler traveling back from jamaica had more than two pounds of cocaine stuffed inside of her bra. customs and border officers discovered the drugs early this morning, arresting 35-year-old sophia williams of washington, d.c. around the area right now, maryland's most powerful radar not indicating any precipitation around the region. nice clear sky out there. and that's going to result in a forecast for this evening of mostly clear skies. it's going to be fairly nice with temperatures holding right around 80 degrees. we're watching the tropics again. we'll tell you all about it, coming up. cash for clunkers is over. but the rush is on to get the rebates. car dealers have just a couple more hours to fill out the paperwork so they can get reimbursed, hopefully. the government has extended the deadline to applications

but clouds are in the process of just kind of dissipating. but late tonight early tomorrow morning, there could be scattered fog around some of the outlying areas. as far as what is going on on our radar, nothing out there. nice clear scan across the region. no precipitation. don't forget, you can always go to our website to abc2news.com. to check out our interactive radar. now right now not much going on with the radar. but let me show you what you can do with it. we're going to zoom out a tiny bit. and then we're going to drag the map and take a look at florida. the weather in florida looking pretty good right now for the launch. however, the launch of the space shuttle, there it is, there is cape kennedy right there. the launch of the space shuttle has been canceled because of a faulty hydrogen valve. so we'll keep you advised. don't stay up until one income the morning waiting for the shuttle to launch, because it's not going to happen tonight. it's been scrubbed. as far as the forecast for tonight, the few clouds we've got around right now, they're going to dissipate overnight. mostly clear sky. during the day tomorrow, a few clouds make their way into the

region. then we'll start to see the clouds building into the area with a chance for showers making their way into the region starting late thursday night. probably the most likely on friday, saturday, sunday, and monday. our forecast for tonight mostly clear. patchy morning fog. 67 degrees for the overnight low. during the day tomorrow, mostly sunny, a warmer day tomorrow with a high of 90 degrees. now the 90 tomorrow will be followed by an 85 and partly cloudy on thursday with a chance for a very late night thursday shower. then on friday mostly cloudy, scattered showers. 78 degrees. showers and thunderstorms on saturday and sunday. that could be the result of that little disturbance off of puerto rico making its way northward. we'll keep you advised. then on monday a chance for scattered showers. tuesday partly cloudy, 79 degrees. we'll see you tonight at 11:00. let's throw it over to mr. sports. >> that was an interesting night for the ravens last night. joe flacco took a lot of shots down field. and the defense put up points. overall a win but an uneven

the game, but came back and made a play. >> went down and had some nice drives. so we'll go back over the date. in the end we feel pretty good what we did right now. said we would go back and look at it and see what we can clean up for next week. after the game bart scott had interesting comments about rex, quote, he was the head coach of that team last year, whether you guys know it or not. i wonder what john harbaugh would say about that. rex has seen this before. natta, who has three career interceptions gets into the end zone early. haloti said when he caught the ball, he thought of one thing. six points. >> put my hand on it and run it. it was great that trevor got that block on mike and i was able to basically walk in. >> i don't know what we're going to do with him. maybe put him at linebacker or corner or something. the guy is obviously from the corner. but strike that. he is a special -- he is a special player.

we have some breaking news to tell you about now. four manholes in downtown baltimore blew off in what is being called a small sewer explosion. it happened shortly before 6:00 tonight at fayette and utah streets. fire crews say bge and public works are on the scene.
