we'll cool back a little tomorrow and then plan for the possibility of a tropical storm coming up the coast this weekend. we'll talk about that in a bit. let's check the roads with kim brown. >> thank you. good morning. as we look at southbound 95 approaching whitemarsh boulevard traffic is moving along at a nice clip, building volume there in the southbound lanes but no real problems to let you know about. in baltimore city keep in mind there will be rolling lane closures, road closures because of the big back to school rally. starting 7:00 a.m., barclay street between lafayette and north street. and 9:30, north avenue between calvert to greenmount will close. the intersections will all open by 11:30 a.m. a crash at 95 and russell street still blocking the left two lanes, right lane gets by. utah closed between east fayette and mulberry. a manhole cover explosion. and timonium road the construction project still blocking the southbound lanes.

and bay bridge, a crash blocking the center lane there. and jfx at northern parkway traffic moving nicely. back to you. 5:30. the liberal lion of the united states senate has died. senator ted kennedy was 77. his family announced his death after his battle with a brain tumor. the family says though they have lost kennedy the inspiration of his faith, optimism and perseverance will live on in the hearts forever. >> for nearly a half century he was a sted fast champion of the working class and poor, a powerful voice on health care, civil rights, war, peace. you name it. if it was involved in politics. to the american public he was best known as the last surviving son of america's most glum -- glamorous political family shattered over and over again by tragedy. arnold schwarzenegger and his wife maria say they are saddened by the death of uncle teddy. hours after he died of brain

cancer the pair said "it was a shock to our family. kennedy's death came just two weeks after that of maria shriver's mother, eunice kennedy shriver, one of the senator's siblings. impressive, even inspiring to watch him return to work after his cancer diagnosis. >> his passion is what really made him a political icon. for your thoughts we're going to head over to pennsylvania station where we find linda so live. >> reporter: the folks we're talking to say they will remember senator kennedy as a man for the people. he fought for people reforms that have changed life as we know it. the 77-year-old senator died late tuesday at his home in massachusetts after a year of battling brain cancer. he served more than 40 years in the senate and worked vigorously to change civil and voting rights and improve health care. his liberal voice many say they will miss. most recently he fought for universal health care and worked from his sick bed for

it's 5:33. a robbery suspect is dead, shot by an anne arundel county police officer in a parking lot of a brooklyn park store. this happened monday night at the liquor store on ritchie highway. police say 47-year-old brian ducas was implicated in four robberies throughout the county. when officers confronted him in the parking lot they say the suspect tried to run over the officer twice. the officer fired and struck ducas killing him. he was most recently wanted for a robbery at the pnc bank in crofton. surveillance photos captured on the screen. >> the suspect then slammed on the gas and went toward the officer. the officer had drawn his weapon, fired multiple rounds into the vehicle and struck the suspect. he died on scene. >> police are still looking for a woman in the surveillance video. you see her there. if you know anything about her call metro crime stoppers at 1-866-7-lockup. five years after a deadly

water taxi accident on baltimore's inner harbor the coast guard wants the.oon boats inspected to make sure they are not at high risk of flip over. you may remember five people died when a water taxi overturned in 2004. the coast guard's final report finds several reasons the boat capsized including a bad decision to leave the dock in front of an approaching storm. the report also recommends pontoon boat inspections to make sure they pass a stability test. in an earlier report by the national transportation safety board it said the coast guard underestimated the risk of capsizing because it relied on stability tests for similar but not identical vessels. the three business owners were identified, that were charged with owning salvia. police say benjamin lugassi, sharon cohen and itzhak elgavi are the first to be charged

arundel county. at the highest elevation in anne arundel county. we're looking at temperatures pushing through the mid-80s by lunchtime and 90 as we head through this afternoon. sunny to partly cloudy. more on that tropical weather this weekend coming up. let's check the roads with kim. >> thank you. it's early right now so traffic is moving nicely on the major roads. for the most part. this is southbound 95 approaching whitemarsh boulevard, pretty much clear as you make your way to the 695/895 split. however, keep in mind that earlier crash on northbound 95, between the russell street exit and exit to the bw parkway remains on the scene blocking the two right lanes there. only the left lane manages to get by. emergency crews are still on the scene. that would be eutaw street closed between fayette and mulberry street because of the blown manhole covers. southbound 83, timonium road construction blocks the southbound lanes but that should end soon. and westbound at the bay bridge, a crash blocking the center lane. that crash has been cleared. we have the school -- not school, but road closings because of the back to school rally. barclay street between north

winnic reports. >> tried to stop it. >> looks like we're having a technical error. we apologize. >> we'll get back -- of course we're getting the condolences pouring in. the president responded. this happened around midnight when we got news from the kennedy family. they were by his bedside when he passed away from a brain tumor this morning. you'll be hearing from senators, representatives, those who work with him, those who worked on bills with him all throughout on "good morning america" but right now let's get back to t.j.'s story about the passing of senator ted kennedy. >> reporter: to most americans ted kennedy was the staunch liberal with that famous last name. in reality he was a legislative work horse, a millionaire who became a powerful advocate for the middle class. born in boston in 1932 edward kennedy was the last of nine children of joseph and rose fitzgerald kennedy. they would become american royalty but tragedy would touch

them. earlier in life his oldest brother joe was killed in world war ii, his sister died in a plane crash in 1928. in 1962 while his brother was in the white house ted was elected to the vacant massachusetts senate seat at just 30 years old. >> i pledge i shall dedicate all my strength and will to serving you in the united states senate. >> reporter: by then he was married to joan bennet with whom he would have three children but again tragedy when just after a thousand days of camelot president kennedy was assassinated in dallas. in 1968 brother robert, a senator and democratic candidate for president shot and killed in a los angeles hotel. >> to be remembered simply as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it. >> reporter: most assumed ted would one day take his rightful place in the oval office but in the summer of 1969 that all

changed. kennedy drove his car off a narrow brimming off chappaquidick island in massachusetts resulting in the death of a campaign worker. >> this morning i plead guilty to the charge of leaving the scene of an accident. >> reporter: kennedy apologized to a televised speech and received a suspended sentence. though he would declare in 1979 -- >> today i formally announce i'm a candidate for president of the united states. >> reporter: he did not overcome questions about chappaquidick or incumbent jimmy carter. in the 1980s he emerged as a force in the senate fighting for such causes as national health insurance and tax reform. as patriarch of his family he delivered the eulogy at funeral services for his nephew john f. kennedy jr. after his death in a plane crash in july of 1999. before and during the battle for iraq he became one of the loudest anti-war voices in the senate just as he did in vietnam. in 2008 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and kennedy would

this case. also this morning, exclusive video from northwest baltimore. a city cop was rear-ended as she sat at a light early this morning on wabash and northern parkway. the officer was taken to shock trauma and checked out. the driver was questioned by police. no word on charges and if they will be filed. we'll keep you posted. also this morning, in northwest baltimore, that part of the city fire crews investigating a house fire on oak hill street around midnight. we're told everyone inside did make it out ok and right now no word on how the fire started. the people forced out are now being helped by neighborhood services. starting off with temperatures around 70 degrees this morning. cooler weather back to our northwest. 50s and 60s. hanging on to the mugginess that is trying to make a return and from southern maryland and farther from the south. essentially sunshine for today. we've got that push of the wind from the south and southwest. that brings in a little more heat, that brings in a little more humidity which will make

today a little less comfortable than it was yesterday. wider view, you can see the next cold front and it lingers across the great lakes. we will have showers and thunderstorms already around chicagoland and pushing towards detroit and cleveland. you're flying out there there may be delays but also want to point out that's underneath -- well, that is the north side of high pressure which may actually get blocked up. we may have a little traffic jam in the atmosphere, old tropical boundary off the coast. and further on down to the south, in fact, running about 350 miles north of puerto rico and northeast we've got a new area of development. some models depict this has the strength to be a tropical storm. i suspect in the next few hours or by the end of today this storm will become tropical storm danny. as we got these computer models that are locking in on the track and a lot of it further west than what bill had done last weekend which means there's the threat of this clipping ocean city, gusty winds, definitely high surf and possibility of heavy rain leading into the weekend. today our two-degree guarantee downtown 90. that should be the hot spot. in fact to the south
