tomorrow is the first day of school in baltimore county, and city. there's been big changes in the city effecting hundreds of students and their parents. there has been criticism from parents over parts of that plan. i guess the big test begins tomorrow. >> reporter: tomorrow we will

see them play out. rear at harriet tubman elementary school. you can see the play ground out here is empty. no students out here. tomorrow, it will look much the same. this is one of many city schools that shut down this summer. in the spring, alonso announced his plan to close city schools and expand those doing well. he calls harriet tubman a underperforming school. students will be sent to three other schools, spreading out the population. many students and parents are anxious about the change. we have talked to one woman who sent five kids and seven grandkids to harriet tubman. >> they would come here and i would give them a meal, or a drink of water. i talked to the parents about this.

tried to make things better for the children. >> reporter: certainly a lot of changes in this neighborhood, and many others across baltimore. lamel middle school also closed this summer. some parents fear moving wallbrook closer to douglas high will create more violence, because of gang activity. it's hard to cover all the changes in one report. i want to direct you to our website, abc2news.com if you want to read more about the reorganization plan before tomorrow's school opening. a teenager from elkridge has died after being struck by a suspected drunk driving. 16-year-old benjamin wort man was hit and killed. the suspect is freed on

$100,000 bond. he is charged with driving under the influence, and possession of heroin. a maryland man charged with killing a security guard at the u.s. holocaust memorial museum is scheduled to appear this week in court. he was indicted back in july, but been hospitalized since then, with wounds he suffered in the shootout. investigators say von brunn has been active in white supreme sift groups. democrats and republicans are agreeing that the loss of senator ted kennedy will be felt. on saturday, he was buried next to his brothers at arlington national cemetery.

above los angeles forces more evacuations. the flames no threaten -- now threaten about 10,000 homes. >> reporter: events over the past 24 hours combine to what officials call the perfect firestorm. with the right combination of weather, fuel, and terrain, the fire has doubled in size overnight. sending spectacular plumes of smoke over the city. >> right now, we're so early in the fire, my best comment is that this is a treacherous fire, and we need to be on our toes, collectively. >> reporter: normally calm weather helps the firefighters, but not in this case. no wind to blow the flames away, and the terrain make it is tough object the -- make it tough on the ground. flames threaten some 12,000 homes. >> we have them out in the neighborhoods. >> reporter: it's not just the

professionals trying to protect private property. mount wilson, home of the world famous observetory, and many of the research antennas is in danger. mandatory evacuations effects for several areas. so far the fire has consumed 35,000 acres and is not close to being under control. over 2,000 firefighters are battling the blaze. officials hope additional manpower, and slightly cooler temperatures will provide some relief. the cause of the fire, which began wednesday is under investigation. abc news. one of baltimore's best known teachers has a new job. jenna bush hager has been hired by nbc's today show. she lives in baltimore city, and works as a reading coordinator here. she's expected to contribute about one show a month to the

check on national headlines. not far from the atlantic coast, police have arrested a man who called 911 to report that seven people were killed in a mobile home. police say that person who made the call is a february member. but won't say whether he's facing murder charges. police are searching a yard in a home where a girl was kidnapped 18 years ago be had been living ever since. they want to know if the couple had anything to do with

prostitute murders in the area. phillip and nancy garrido have been charged with kidnapping and rape in connection with the disappearance. coast guard had called off its search last friday. a passing fisherman saw the three men sitting on top of their capsized boat out in the gulf of mexico, about 180 miles from land. they were rescued last night, the fisherman even took home video of the men, as they were recovered on board, and they seemed to fully enjoy that steak dinner. ♪ [ music ] it will probably be sometime before they head out fishing again. >> yes, i would think so. although the weather, a at least around here, it's going to be terrific. it's going to get even better tomorrow, especially for everybody who has been complaining about the heat this month.

right now, temperatures are at 80 degrees. relative humidity, 51%. wind is light and variable. about 7 miles per hour right now. out on the bay, here are the conditions for tomorrow. high tide at 4:28 in the evening. low tide 11:50 a.m., and wind out of the north, 10 to 15 miles per hour. take a look at the satellite radar composite. you can see we had a couple of showers that were hanging around last night, that was part of a front. as it moves through, we see things much clearer throughout the day today. seeing a few more clouds starting to build in now. but most of activity is staying allock the coast, and remember -- along the coast, and remember, what was tropical storm danny is history. we have a couple of effects along the coast, as far as heavy surf. at this point, there is a medium risk of rip currents. let's take a look along ocean city. two or three foot waves. so half the size of what they were yesterday. seeing more people in the water, and things are starting

to get back to normal there. most of the convection is going to be along the coast. we've had this cold front that has moved through our region. still just the tail end of the coast, starting to move through this evening. that be will out of here. it's going to fall out to the south and east of us. we're going to see that stall out in the ocean. that's going to keep the weather pretty nice for us for the next couple of days. unless, of course something doubles up in the tropic, and something is bubbling. if you take a look right where our logo is, if that looks suspicious, that's because it is. that's not a tropical depression yet, but is likely to form into our next trap depression and next named storm. if it does, that would be tropical storm erica. taking a look at the extended forecast. with all of that activity to the west and east of us, that's where the rain is going to be staying at always. dry conditions, partly cloudy conditions. very pleasant weather ahead for

us this week. for tonight, 56 degrees. partly cloudy, and pleasant. as we head into tomorrow, we're looking at a high, yes, a high of 75 degrees. so mostly sunny. quite a bit cooler. for the next seven days, the breeze kicks in monday night and into tuesday. so not only is it cooler, it's going to be drier and it's going to be breezy. it's really going to feel cooler as we head into tuesday. starts to warm up a little bit by wednesday. back into the low 80s by thursday and friday. saturday and sunday, more towards our normal temperatures. back to you. chainsaw sculptures rides, horse, and pony shows, and lots of food. you can find it all at the first weekend of the maryland state fair. the fair grounds came alive this past friday. they'll be busy through labor day weekend. today's fun included live thoroughbred horse racing. the battle of the beast is tomorrow. the fair stays open until 10:00 every night. ♪ [ music ]

score. the o's lead 4-0. top of the 4th, one out, gets jamey carroll swinging. the 22-year-old had 8 strike outs just 1 walk. allowed just 1 run. bottom 6, after giving up 3 of his 4 hits, getting jhonny peralta, the o's win, 5-2. he says it was done physically as well as mentally. >> i came out here. got brought up to the major leagues, and i was trying to do too much, rather than just pitching my game. that was a lot to do with it. obviously, i made some mechanical adjustments, but a lot of it had to do up top. >> that's how he pitched in spring training. that was vintage matis. he's going to win a lot of games. let's hope so, the yankees come to town tomorrow for three games. the texas rangers come in next weekend. for the yankees, they were taking on the chicago white sox

today. bottom 3, johnny damon gets into one. a towering shot to right. two-run homer puts the yanks on top. 3-2. what a season mark teixeira is having. i guess we're not going to see the mark teixeira home run, but he had 4 rbi's today. derek jeter makes a nice grab. the yankees go on to win, 8-3. the ravens are a perfect 3-0 this preseason, but even john harbaugh warns it doesn't mean anything, because the games don't count yet. but joe flacco was awesome against the panthers last night. washington had three catches for 66-yards. gorgeous throw to todd. flacco 23 of 28. 247yards and that score. he was just spreading the ball around later in the 2nd

quarter. the play action to derrick mason. what a great move by mason right there. 6 catches, 71 yards. that would lead to this touchdown from willis mcgahee of all people. all around, a good performance, but an improving ravens offense. >> that's what he does every day in practice. nothing new for any of us. it was good to see us come out on the field and execute the way we did. if we can continue to do that, it will be a lot of fun. >> joe has been able to go through his progression. when the first guy is not open, he goes to the second or third guy. what makes it so good, he does it so fast. he scans the field, and reads the defense, for a young quarterback, that's exceptionally well. >> i think we've done a good job. >> that's the good. now here's the bad. the kicking game remains wide open. steven had a chance to win the

job, but just got not take advantage last night. it happened on the ravens first drive of the game. a chip shot. 27-yard field goal. and he misses it wide right. he was not very good in his kickoffs as well. he did say he can only be judged by his last kick and he did come through with a field goal later in the game in the 3rd quarter, but clearly afterwards, john harbaugh, not happy with his kicker. >> right now, i don't think he grabbed the job. he kicked well. he kicked okay. but he's better than that. i think part of that was, he kind of, he tried to protect his kicks a little bit. swing your leg and kick the ball, if it goes in, it goes in. if it doesn't, it doesn't. >> the calls for matt stover are going to get louder and louder. the ravens final preseason game is this thursday night against the falcons.

he was that close. he played the final four holes in 4 over. tiger with a chance to tie for the lead. tiger misses a money put. he stairs it down, like it's the ball's fault. tiger misses a money shot. heath slocum on par. to stay at 9 under. that is a big time shot, but he had to sit and wait for steve stricker. stricker misses, so 18 and the cup is rather small today. tiger, ouch. i know you don't want to read too much into a preseason game, but was it just me, or did joe flacco look awesome? >> quick. he looked fantastic. i think he's going to have a great season. a final check on the weather when we come back. ♪
