street closed between park and eutaw and greene and mlk. and 152 at bel air road, the crash remains on scene but off to the right so it shouldn't impact travel times too much. jfx at cold spring lane, building volume southbound headed towards downtown baltimore city but no real problems at this time. back to you. 6:31. it seemed like everybody was on the water yesterday, crabbing, fishing, sailing. >> the sun went down, two boats smacked into one another and other boaters tried to save those on board. linda so has details. >> reporter: the man they were trying to save lived in this neighborhood. friends say he loved the water and loved marley creek. this is what things looked like last night after officers and the coast guard arrived. investigators say the coast guard had to rescue john martins and his 13-year-old daughter lauren after their boat slammed into another boat. the force of the crash flipped over the martins' boat and

caused the other one to go out of control. that's when one witness jumped on board the boat to stop it but the driver died. witnesses say it's not surprising the crash happened considering how shallow it is where the two creeks meet. >> it's pretty dangerous, they should probably put a speed limit there i'm on my jet ski. i see people take it sharp and almost collide. it's three feet deep from that point where they hit. >> reporter: the victim has not been identified but friends say he and the father and daughter who had to be rescued all knew each other well. live in curtis cove, linda so, abc2 news. 21 dogs found living in disgusting conditions in a home in anne arundel county. they are recovering this morning. this happened at a home in orchard beach late friday morning. animal control says the home was in terrible condition with feces piled up two feet high. officers took the abused animals this time around but several years ago neighbors say they took it upon themselves to

clean up this family's act. >> at one time we had gotten trapped cats, they trapped 70 something cats. things have been happening like this as long as i can remember. >> police haven't released the names of the owners but we've learned the home on sea breeze drive in orchard beach is owned by janet taylor. no charges with been filed. the dogs are now recovering at animal control center until they are found healthy enough for adoption. the house, by the way, is condemned. for more information on how to donate or adopt any of these dogs, because, again, 21 were rescued, there's information at abc2news.com. a second baltimore-area bank has failed. rogers forge-based bradford bank shut down by federal regulators. earlier this month the west bank was given two weeks to either sell or be taken over. all nine branches will be

opened again as m & t banks. both m & t and fdic will share the losses on about $38 million of bradford loans and assets. customers should not notice any changes. bradford is the second maryland bank to fail in these tough times. crofton-based suburban federal was the first to fail. if you want to catch an orioles game next month it won't cost you much. $1 tickets, how about that? being offered for most home games in september. there are 500 tickets available on the third tier at a low price. the dollar tickets are not good against the yankees or the red sox. nearly two months after their 100-year-old church burned after being hit by lightning parishioners of the baltimore's bethel ame church had their first service in their own church. they had been holding services at a synagogue in park heights while repairs were made. the reverend dr. frank reed says the return is a testament

in from rather chill air mass, frontal boundary draped just through southern maryland. this little flare-up of low pressure through the carolinas, through the mid-atlantic states, wet today, baltimore northbound stays dry but we have a fair amount of clouds. we'll call it partly sunny though we're actually mostly cloudy this morning, 73, the low ends of our two-degree guarantee. we clear out tonight, low to mid-50s. let's check the roads with kim. >> as we look at the outer loop at liberty road traffic is beginning to build as you make your way down towards the route 70 and baltimore national pike interchanges. good news if you're headed doubt downtown, fayette reopened between park and eutaw. but, westbound saratoga between greene and mlk remains closed because of that watermain break repair. try pennsylvania avenue as an alternate. fallston, that crash remains on the scene at mountain road and bel air road. word of another crash in stevenson, greenspring valley road at old valley road,

reports of a diego -- deer being struck. so use caution. a lot of us spent time on the water this summer but a quick lapse in judgment can be costly. and sometimes, like yesterday, deadly. >> that's what happened yesterday in anne arundel county on marley creek when two boats collided. linda so joins us live from the scene with reaction from one man who knew the victim well. >> reporter: friends say the victim loved the water, they say he loved taking out his boat, would often joke about owning marley creek. this was what things looked like last night after officers and the coast guard arrived. investigators say the coast guard had to rescue john martins and his 13-year-old stepdaughter. the crash caused the other boat to go out of control. the driver of the second boat died. witnesses say it's not surprising the crash happened considering how shallow the

water is where the two creeks meet. >> i was eating ice cream. the neighbor here told me what happened. it just floored me. i was sad. >> reporter: the victim has not been identified but friends say he leaves behind four young children. meanwhile, the father and daughter who had to be rescued are expected to be ok. live in curtis cove, linda so, abc2 news. a teen from elkridge died after being hit by a suspected drunk driver. 16-year-old benjamin whartman was riding his bike on route 108 near lark brown road after midnight friday morning when he was hit. the suspect aaron longsong of west friendship is free on $100,000 bond. he was charged with driving under the influence and possession of heroin. baltimore city police continue to investigate a double shooting on the avenue in hampden. police say it happened after 11:00 saturday night of one person was shot in the leg. the other shot in the arm. the victims had not been

identified but police say their injuries are not life threatening. a meryl man charged with killing a -- a maryland man charged with killing a security guard at the holocaust museum is scheduled to appear in court this week. 89-year-old james von brunn was indicted last july but has been in the hospital since then with wounds he suffered in the shootout his arraignment is set for this coming wednesday. investigators say von brunn has been active in a white supremacist movement and faces the death penalty if he's convicted. nearly two months after their 100-year-old church burned after being hit by lightning parishioners of the baltimore bethel ame church held mass in their own church. they had been holding services in a synagogue in park heights while repairs were being made. the reverend dr. reed said it's a testament of the strength and commitment of the congregation. today's the first day of school in baltimore county and city and there are big changes in the city affecting hundreds of students as well as parents. over the past year the head of the city school system closed underperforming schools.

students from those closed schools were sent to three other schools spreading out the population. there had been criticism from parents over parts of that plan. >> the school, the children and the neighborhood, they could come here, i would give them meal, a drink of water, talk about whatever. i could talk to the parents about them. and try to make things better for the children. >> for more information about the plan including what schools are closed, that's all on abc2news.com. we have one baltimore school that finds itself on a new list, good news. for the past few years w.e.b. dubois high school has been on the state's persistently dangerous list. after financial help from the government, hard work from students and staff the school is now listed as persistently safe. the principal says she's happy the school is shown in a positive light.

>> today we have met the guidelines based on the state and we have been identified persistently safe but guess what? we've always been persistently safe at w.e.b. debut high school. >> she says students now have more options to get the most out of their high school experience. night classes, mentoring programs and other programs have been added to the curriculum. two firefighters in los angeles county are dead after their car rolled over on a mountain as they were battling severe wildfires. the fires burning over 66 square miles, only 5% contained. more than 12,000 homes are in danger of being destroyed by the flames. governor arnold schwarzenegger is urging those in the path of the fires to get out of there. a $120,000 reward is being -- $20,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest for the mass murder of eight people in georgia. police say they found nine

victims. two rushed to the hospital. one remains in critical condition. police say it's one of the most brutal murders they've seen in 25 years. the killer was not among the dead or injured. a man who reported the bodies is in custody accused of lying to police and is now facing other charges. >> i want a complete congressional investigation. because there's more to this than just what you have heard. >> joe jackson speaking to sky news about his son's death. he says the doctor is not the only one to blame in the king of pop's death and wants to find out how many people are involved. typically the local authorities handle homicide investigations. the l.a. county coroner's office ruled the death a homicide caused by two powerful drugs. michael jackson's personal doctor told police he gave jackson the drugs on the morning of his death after

saying other sedatives would not help him sleep. after what would have been his 51st birthday, thousands of fans gathered for a celebration for michael jackson. it was in brooklyn, new york. and hosted by filmmaker spike lee. he directed two music videos for jackson in 1996 and says he loved his talent. >> michael influenced all aspects of music. so, evidence touched by the many testimonials of people, who spoke with the heartfelt feelings after michael's death. >> celebrations were worldwide, actually, because fans danced in the streets of paris and moscow. celebrations included a choreo graphed dance organized by fans. three boaters in texas safe at home after they were missing in the gulf of mexico for a week. they were found saturday on top of their capsized boat 180

miles from land. the coast guard called off the search this past friday but a passing boater saw something while fishing last night. >> i got the binoculars out. said somebody is standing up there flagging us. a white flag. turned out it was a t-shirt. they jumped in the boat. there was no help. they jumped in. >> none of the men were seriously injured but were dehydrated and hungry. the captain of that fishing boat took home video of the three men as they recovered and called home on cell phones to say they were safe. one of baltimore's best-known teachers has a new job. former first daughter jenna bush hager has been hired by nbc's today show. the 27-year-old lives in baltimore city and works as a reading coordinator here. she's going to be contributing about one story a month to the shood -- shood -- to "the today show" on issues
